  • Today, we are taking a look at the PlayStation Portal, a handheld accessory that lets you remotely play your PS5 console on a portable screen. In this video I am going to try and answer the big question for PS5 owners… Do you NEED a Playstation Portal? Is this the ultimate companion for PS5 owners, or just a gimmick?

    Definitely wasn't a need but it is handy to be able to game from the comfort of my air-conditioned bedroom to the lounge room where the ps5 is hard wired too

      Yeah it’s not essential but I enjoy the additional gaming options it gives me.

    Here’s the thing. I look at the PlayStation Portal and I see two things. I see number one that people are hating on it because they aren’t seeing what it was truly made for. It’s not a portable console it is a remote play device and everyone is underwhelmed by it doing what it was designed for. But then number two is that it doesn’t even do what it was designed for too great. There’s a lot needed for this to truly feel incredible. First is the internet connection. It should use WiFi 6 opposed to 5 and I don’t know what needed to be done but it should be able to handle internet connection way better considering it’s literally based around it. Then there is the basics with the performance. This thing should have a 1440p OLED display. Now here’s the thing the 1080p display is not really bad at all it’s the LCD part that gets ya. But also games should better downscale from 4k to that 1080p or 1440p or whatever instead of just trying to broadcast something it can’t because that just makes it blurry. Maybe you could decrease the bezel around the screen a little bit which would also increase the screen size without sacrificing space. Making it 8.25 inches so just a quarter inch more which could be nice often! As for frames I don’t know I feel like 60 fps is pretty good and I wouldn’t expect higher than like maybe 90 until we would get a model of the portal with the PS6(although I don’t think we will ever get a perfected model because of how poorly this was perceived). I also think the system should accept Bluetooth. It’s so stupid it doesn’t! Okay but then there is the navigation menu. I think it would’ve done better to have a genuine nice menu to scroll through to make this thing feel more complete. And my idea is that for application options there were of course things like internet as a base one, Bluetooth, and then of course like something such as a cog wheel to take you into the deep settings. But what if there was a Portal as an application/tab. So this portal is clicked on and then a sweet cinematic is played going through like a loophole and then you end up on your PS5 screen. This way they could set it to where you can have multiple PS5s linked to your Portal, each having their own set ‘portal’. This would be so cool! You could also name each console so you know which portal is which and color customize each portal! And on the other end of things in the PS5 menu there is a portal to go back to the PS portal menu! And if the console is in rest mode the portal is turned off and it’s just a frame but you can click on the frame to turn on the system and the portal effectively. And if the system is all the way off the portal would be like red or something. Just leaning into the theming of portals would be so cool and they could sneak in some Easter eggs and stuff too! So that’s all the main stuff I think should be done for the portal. With this stuff alone looking at the technological improvements I find this fair if it retailed for $250 and I think the customer satisfaction rate would be way higher as this would feel like a real product. But then there are ways they could take it a step further. Firstly is a built in Web Browser. This wouldn’t let you download anything but still would open things up a lot. And if it was like PlayStation official and not just like google that would be so cool! But the best reason for this is you can link to free networks where you have to agree to terms and conditions! This would be pretty great! The next thing is having a Portal Exclusive game. Like one of the portals has astro-bot sticking out from it and you can enter this tiny little 2 hour game exclusive to the portal. Or even just like an Easter egg mini-game. Something would be cool for when you can’t link at the time and you don’t want the system to be useless. And other thing is to make it so the thing works like a Wii U game pad and there is a game where it’s involved. I think for this they could just do an update on Astro’s Playroom adding an extra four level world(so like an hour to beat)with the Portal as a game pad and it like detects stuff and you draw on it and stuff. There is so much that could be done for this thing without seeming unreasonable and it’s just sad how bad Sony fumbled because this could be a new big thing, working in line with Portables, Home Consoles, and Portals all being in the market at the same time. Who knows? Maybe it still can be… only time will tell. I don’t even care for it too much but if they doubled down on the theme of opening portals it would be so sick!

      Great ideas and a comprehensive comment. I agree with a lot of what you have said. As it is though I like the simplicity and it works. But it could have been so much more and that feels like a missed opportunity. I worry it won’t receive much support as a concept, if it’s treated anything like the psvr2 then the future is not bright…

    Managed to get one last week. Been upset because I have a gigabit mesh wifi system, a small house, and 1Gb of fiber internet coursing through my home and still get lag spikes and disconnects every 5 minutes. The past week I've spent troubleshooting my ps5, my wifi, and the little I can do with the portal itself to remedy the disconnects, all I have left to do is hardwire the ps5 (I know it's crucial but I needed to order another router because of my home's layout). I will try again today, but I HOPE it's fixed.

      I think hardwiring the console is essential. I had lots of issues with it on WiFi. As soon as I hardwired it has worked almost perfectly. Very few faults. Hope you can sort it.

      Manually program your IP address this is how I fixed mine and bought an AC1200 Asus WiFi adapter and plugged it in the PS5. Play nearly any game now with maybe 5 to 10 seconds of lag or frame rate drop per se 15 mins. So not bad at all hope this helps

    It is not definitely a need like a Nintendo switch which works as a standalone console everywhere, but it's worth it because I can lay in bed and play with it while my air conditioner runs and cools me off when it's hot or if I'm warming up milk for coffee in the kitchen. It goes with me and I can play my video game without stopping. It's a really good addition to the PlayStation 5 and I have been enjoying mine so much that it took Remote Play to another level because it does it much better and more efficiently than a smartphone or an awkward tablet.

    • @jaygrice
      @jaygrice  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It definitely extends where you can play and I agree that it’s so much more consistent and convenient than using remote play on other devices. Glad you are enjoying yours!

    Let’s say my PS5 is turned on or in low power mode in my home… Am I able to play games on the portal if I’m away from home as long as I have wifi?

    • @jaygrice
      @jaygrice  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Theoretically yes, I have never tried it as I only use the portal at home. I have seen a lot of people online though claiming to be using them from other countries. I think it will come down to the quality of the WiFi at both ends. Also to get the best experience your PS5 should be on a wired connection. I found a lot of lag issues when I was running the PS5 over WiFi.

    As a weird completionist...
    ...YES, I need these accesories. It is irrational and bizarre and I understand myself enough to know that. I am going to get the PS5 camera with no actual plans for it. I also want that new battery life centric controller. I want to have the "PS5 Launch Collection with New Accessories" for reasons I cannot comprehend.
    I love my Portal. It is neat.

      I’m with you. I like to have the tech and try them out but often don’t have a real need for them. At least you recognise it and if you enjoy it, then who cares! I like the portal a lot too.

      I don’t know when it comes to using it outside of your home. Internet speeds aren’t relevant for home network use. It really comes down to your WiFi setup and making sure the console is hardwired.

    Absolutely don’t need it. Esp owning something size of iPhone 15 Pro Max. You get Apps, Native gaming (RE 4, Village, Death Stranding, GTA), Bluetooth, higher res screen, streaming etc. Pickup a Backbone for $50 (Costco) and you’re set. New PSP soon don’t bother.

    • @jaygrice
      @jaygrice  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fair points, I tried backbone. It’s very cool, but I found even with a larger phone and the backbone it felt small and flimsy in hand. The portal is a nicer overall size but it’s def not a necessary spend if you have alternatives like the backbone. Rumours of the new PSP are exciting though and will likely replace the portal. Nothing confirmed yet though.

    Just double the price tag and get a Steam Deck instead. chiaki’s got PS streaming covered.

    • @jaygrice
      @jaygrice  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s definitely an option. I have a friend who has a Steamdeck and my only complaint was the overall weight. But it’s not a deal breaker and the additional functionality is obviously much better. I don’t have much of a steam library as a primarily console gamer.

      @@jaygrice I didn’t either, but they have some real bangers. Ori 1 & 2, Blasphemous 1 & 2, Ixion, Titanfall 2, plus every game I’ve ever enjoyed pre-ps3 era via Emudeck.

    If you can't use it while your ps5 is shutdown then there is no point for it....Better buy a extra controller, it's cheaper...

      Yeah your PS5 needs to be in low power mode, but then when you use the portal it does wake the console up.
