      That reason this game has motion controls is because Miyamoto believes that motion controls is the only way to control the walker and land-master in this game. It works but it also made things very complicated. So why add in new vehicles at all if theres a down side, because Miyamoto believes that more vehicles is the only way for Starfox to standout amongst other shoot'em ups.

      I mean most of them yeah, but shitting on Star Fox Zero is by no means unique, and he doesn't seem to care about what good any of the mechanics could possibly bring to the table. Just wants it to be exactly like Sin and Punishment 2.
      Star Fox Zero had some great ideas, the issue is the level design and, yeah, the second screen. I love the freedom the aiming provides, but it should have been consolidated onto the same screen as flying.

    • @lancestriker0111
      @lancestriker0111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@hahasamian8010 The reason he doesn't mention a lot of the good things in star fox zero is that most of the good things in star fox zero aren't particularly unique to it. For example, the aiming. The aiming (only when looking at the gamepad I might add) in star fox zero isn't good because of anything it does uniquely, its good because gyro aim is good in general, and zero is far from a pioneer of gyro aim. Even then it can be really awkward moving the absolute goliath that is the wii u gamepad around in order to move the cursor to hit an enemy that's hiding by the edge of the screen, so its far from one of the best uses of gyro either.

    • @hahasamian8010
      @hahasamian8010 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lancestriker0111 I can't talk about how it feels to actually play this with a gamepad as I've only ever experienced this on CEMU with a normal controller (and both screens displaying on a single one), but I love how much more free Star Fox Zero can feel than the other Star Fox games. Ignoring the issue with switching between screens (because with a little work I'm sure it can be fixed), the All-Range Mode feels perfect, and the controls could be used for a phenomenal game if its design were based on Star Fox 2. The only problem is that's not the game they made, leaving Walker Training as the one glimpse of what it could have been like. I keep replaying this Training because it feels so good to get a higher and higher score as I can complete segments faster and faster. It doesn't feel bad to me, it feels badass.
      I'm pretty sure Nerrel himself said parts of this game felt good, but he never looks into why because he'd just prefer to talk about how bad it is, once again, *like everyone else.*

    Something that I've only realized now in retrospect after seeing that Pokémon Snap on the Switch is a hit; Nintendo was _desperate_ to make a game that would justify the Wii U's gamepad screen, and they somehow *didn't* think to make an on-rails photography game like Pokémon Snap?! That would've been perfect for the Wii U!
    Think about it: imagine a game like Pokémon Snap, but where the TV screen displays something along the lines of a fixed third-person view that shows everything around the player character, and the gamepad acts as the camera. Unlike Star Fox Zero where changing screens is a strict downgrade, here it would be a plus. You look at the TV screen, then you see something to take a photo of, point the character in that direction, aim with the camera view on the gamepad and take the picture. At worst, the 3rd-person view would be redundant and you could get by entirely with the camera view like a typical Pokémon Snap game, but at best, it would be a huge upgrade as you can more quickly see where everything is and line up the camera.

It becomes just a game of someone trying to guess what people like about F-Zero. However I’d argue the reason why it wasn’t utilized as much as let’s say the Wii Mote is because they wanted the Pro Controller and Wii Motes to be used as well so everyone could have their own play style. This is why a lot of the games were so easy to port to Switch because it’s controllers take inspiration from older controllers on the Wii and Wii U, especially the Pro Controller.

      I don't really agree with this analogy. Some of the levels can be fun once you get used to the controls, which takes a while. I'm someone who grew up with the Wii, so I'm no stranger to motion controls, yet it still took more than half my first playthrough to get used to them. Even then nearly half the levels are boring filler clearly added due to time constraints. And of the remaining more substantial levels, only a select few are very well designed. If your talking its perfect in terms of concept, its another reimagining of the original which Star Fox has already had several of. So I don't really see how it's "perfect in terms of info".

    • @Xfushion2
      @Xfushion2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@lancestriker0111 What I get from the analogy is that despite Starfox having a really soild core gameplay from day one, the series has not really built upon it since 64.
      Adventures is a completely different genre with the Arwing gameplay being a tertiary activity at best.
      Assault brought the 3rd person shooter gameplay which wasn't that good, even for it's time while the Arwing gameplay remained basically the same as 64, and it wasn't the main content of the game (3rd person/hybrid missions take up most of the game time).
      Command was kinda interesting mainly because it's startegy element but again, the Arwing gameplay was the same and the level design is arguably the worst in the series because all the mission objectives were few and reused often.
      Zero is Starfox 64 with an overly complicated control scheme that as Nerrel pointed out wasn't designed around the game itself but by trying to showcase WiiU's features. And while the Arwing gameplay did change it did for the worst.

      @@Ageleszly I agree that Nerrel did the controls dirty, but he is absolutely right about the cripplingly dull mission design. Take it from somebody who played this game much more than anybody should have. In the video, the tutorial level (14:21) is shown in its own context. The first time he says "this is a level" is during the footage shown here (14:31), which actually is a separate level in the main game, the convoy mission between Area 3 and Sector Beta. The second time he says "this is a level" (15:47), he is showing the convoy mission between the Star Wolf encounter in Sector Alpha to Sector Gamma. These *are* two separate levels, and they are far too similar to warrant both of them existing.
      The whole game is bogged down by bad mission design. Of the 20 missions present, only 12 are fully fledged. The other 8 are comprised of a single act that can be cleared within a minute, not to mention just how repetitive they are (such as the two aforementioned convoy missions, the separate Star Wolf encounters, the copy-paste bosses Aquarosa and Dreadnought, etc). As for the main acts, some of them are competent and fun such as Corneria 1 and Titania, but most of them range from bland and boring like Sector Gamma and Corneria 2 to downright awful like Zoness and Area 3.

    • @Ageleszly
      @Ageleszly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@uglybad4 Hmm ok then I must have mistaken the convoy mission for the tutorial sry for that.
      He stil could at least bother showing anything else instead it's not like the game looks like that most of the time.
      I actually agree with your points regarding the fillier missions this is my biggest gripe for Star Fox Zero and probably hints to a rushed development. I loved my first playthrough, but I "accidentally" took the longest route which will happen most commonly where you can already play 11 of the 12 fully fledged level. I was so eager to explore the rest of the game only to become disappointed that the rest of them are very short filler missions that simply stretch the time of the game, so yeah no excuse towards that.
      The general problem I have is that the game doesn't really feature seperate routes who have the same amount and levels and have all its own value, there is no reason for not taking the longest route when it has almost all of the good level this is what in the end killed the motivation for me completing it, but by no means are the controls guilty for that. I actually like them at most, compared to all Star Fox games and I think it's right that they evolved for not letting it play just the same like the other games. So while I can understand negativity towards the games it's way too hyberbolic most of the time and rarely adress the actual problems of the game, the best missions in Star Fox Zero feel really like an exciting space battle and I think that alone is worthy to point out, also while not everyones cup of tea the vehicle variety is surpsrisingly impressive, I enjoyed learning different control schemes, it's just underutilized because of the short lenght of the game.
      So yeah it's not perfect but definitely has potential and a depth that many people are not willing to see.

    You've actually left out one of the biggest monkey paws of them all (I assume because you didn't get the chance to test it): co-op mode. At first, it's the closest thing to a dream-come-true that Star Fox Zero could have: one player flies the ship on the TV, while another player aims and shoots on the gamepad. I seem to recall that the TV player can also shoot directly forward so they have a little more to do, too. It was genuinely a lot of fun. Except...
    The monkey paw comes when you reach one of those points you mentioned where the TV locks onto the boss or objective and you have to fly entirely using the gamepad - it still does that in co-op play! And it doesn't shift flight controls over to the tablet; the person in charge of flying just has to avoid obstacles that aren't on the screen. Moments that are meant to be short cutscenes without danger do this in co-op, and yes my friend and I did die during those several times during our eventually abandoned playthrough. It's so frustrating, because it would have been the best way to play the game if it wasn't clearly an unfinished afterthought.

    12:52 For the sake of completeness, your explanation of why Breath of the Wild doesn't have touch controls on Wii U is missing a piece of key information: there was a corporate mandate from on high that the Wii U and Switch versions of BotW had to be IDENTICAL in terms of features and content.
    I'm sure many developers did prefer the quicker touch-free interface, but removing touch controls from the Wii U version was something the team was required to do regardless of their feelings on the gamepad. In fact, the gamepad is actually mandatory for beating every shrine because Wii U Pro Controllers don't have gyroscopes.
    I think the Zelda team also had ideas for Switch-exclusive features as well, but the suits decided that version parity was a top priority, and I can't even say I blame them there.

      The idea was that they didn't want anyone to buy the Wii U version just for the touchscreen. Not helping was how they stopped console production several months before the Switch released.

      I remember that I chose to buy the Wii U version since the Wii U was the console I actually owned (it wouldn't have been until a couple years later that I eventually got a Switch) and I remember being like "Wind Waker HD had the map and inventory accessible by the touch screen; why is this game instead just constantly blinking at me that touching the gamepad screen switches the game to handheld mode?" I really dislike that they gutted the features that the ones in Wind Waker HD were clearly a prototype for.

      1. Wind Waker launches, a whole bunch of fans go in an uproar about the art style and the sailing and demand an Ocarina of Time 2. Nintendo responded by making Twilight Princess: an edgy Ocarina of Time 2 where all the visuals are brown and grey (just like every other game at the time) and all the unique mechanics (Wolf Link, lantern, spinner, etc.) get underutilized. The result: Wind Waker has aged extremely well and is looked back on more fondly, while Twilight Princess, while still a good game, has not aged well at all, and both Miyamoto and Aonuma look back on it with some regret; feeling that the game's "missing something."
      2. Speaking of Twilight Princess, when they gave the Wii version to game-testers, some right-handed ones complained about it being "awkward" that they shook the Wii remote with their right hand and Link swung the sword with his left hand (even though precise movements weren't required and Link had always been left-handed). In response, the dev team _mirrored_ the whole game for the Wii version just to make Link right-handed, but didn't think to have an option to leave the game un-mirrored if the player's left-handed. That overcorrection carried over into Skyward Sword: an extremely motion-control-heavy game where you can only play the game right-handed; alienating many left-handed longtime Zelda fans such as myself.
      And those are just two examples.

    The biggest insult about the WiiU's gamepad is that you can't even call it "innovation", because Nintendo was just recycling the gimmick they'd created eight years earlier for the DS. A gimmick that had been created to fill a legitimate need (how do we pack more screen size into a system that still has to be small enough to fit in a kid's pocket?) and actually worked the first time around because of how small both screens were, small enough to both fit into the player's non-peripheral vision-and because they were the same distance from the player's eyes so they could both be in focus. As someone who never owned a WiiU, this is the first time I even realized it would have been physically impossible to see both screens at once because of limited depth of field.

      Personally, after Dinosaur Planet and Assault, I think they completely defaulted their mindset to just cramming Starfox into Whatever Gimmicks they wish to sell that series with.
      Only problem is, is that non-of the gimmicks work, or they work-but they come with an Extra set of Guidelines and Red Tape on your controller.
      It’s mind-numbingly stupid. And ticks all the boxes for why I just don’t like Dealing with Nintendo.

      @@danielramsey6141 The problem is that Starfox is a based on arcade shooters, how can you evolve a series when the games are short?? The motion controls were added because it's the only new thing he can add to the series.
      Miyamoto said that he has not interest in making another Starfox unless he can think of a new gamplay idea for it.

    The fact that the Wii U's best usage of the GamePad was as a distraction that could get you killed is so funny. Its main feature is being unintuitive lol
