Well, the King's Game is indeed a virus. The manga and anime already explained it. And the virus spread through the last survivor of the game and must through another game with different class, if not the host will die.

Here's a fun fact, don't watch the anime version of this, it's 10000000% times more disgusting than this and I quitted in the first episode, how disgusting? For example, forcing students to break their fingers, use a chainsaw to cut off their limbs etc.

The plot reminds me of Another. Basically instead of a king there is a curse. Instead of disappearing, students were murdered in a sort of accident like Final Destination. The culprit is an extra person who was dead but revived. The culprit does not have any idea that it was dead and living as normal. Only way to break the curse is to identify the dead one and sent it back to the other world.
Ah I watched Another already, though the anime version... all with that umbrella + stairs.
Actually King's Game manga and anime version is much more brutal than this live action. The punishment not just making them disappear... since it's too merciful and painless.

I am surprised that even though I have never watched this live action I remember this manga's story from way back. Though I think the ending is somewhat different and there had been more to the story.
