The Pyxis 6k wasn’t as CHEAP as I thought!

- Today I ordered everything for an L-Mount Pyxis 6k from Blackmagic design. Even though I own a lot of camera accessories, the final bill still racked up quick. Granted not everyone is going to for a lot of the accessories I have, but this video is a good example of what it could cost if you want to get the most from your PYXIS 6k and have as few compromises as possible.

If you have ordered a Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6k, let us know what accessories you have purchased with the camera and don't be shy about the final cost. Ours was north of 7K...
I preordered the Ursa Cine. I'm a 6K Pro user since they were released and although the Pyxis looks really nice, the Cine is the camera for me. Plus, I won't have to rig it with anything I don't already own. Noice!
nice one Evan….normally I am not a man filled with envy…..
the external memory bank the Evf a monitor recorder and a dji lidar sys with 3 motors now we are way north from 7k
The Pyxis will be Blackmagic's number one selling camera. I also have an L-mount Pyxis on order. I'll be using the NiSi Athena Primes with drop-in blades.
Great lens choice
I say it again, just get an used FX6 instead that has it all.
thats an honest review. thanks
I ordered two, with one rosette plate. One will be the studio/interview B-cam, the other will be my A-cam, run&gun. I am partial to the Atomos Shinobi SDI because it is lightweight, bright, and gets good gas mileage. I’ll be adding a good variable ND and a Smallrig side handle. Still deciding what to do with my FX6.
I’d keep the FX6 - great camera and will help you out for those times you need reliable AF - if you dont have something like the DJI lidar and focus pro system
I’m looking forward to see what type of cages people come out with
likewise
I wish BMD would take the 4k and make it a box like the Pyxis but keep the same price...
Your numbers are on par with the numbers I crunched for this camera. At that budget, I've decided to keep my eyes on a used Canon C500 mk ii as my verite doc camera.
My pocket 6K pro has been great, except when filming verite docs.
I feel you, lol
Hey thats a great suggestion, they are great cameras - recently I saw one for 6k with on run hour on it which I talked about in a separate video
Amazing camera good choice, if you don’t need braw. I would do the same
@@certainlyjoel7778 The irony is I love BRAW on my pocket cameras. I prefer it over ProRes. However, I desire a better ergonomic camera for my verite doc work (filming 6-8 hours for several days in a row). I'm willing to forego BRAW for those types of projects.
You're production values and techniques for this video are staggeringly good. The effort you go to doesnt go unnoticed, well done!
Much appreciated!
Nice one mate! Will be a great little rig °¬)
Again, this camera isn't perfect for me but delivers a great image and it will pair nicely with my P4K so I'll get one later this year...
to be fair, Pyxis is cheap, just that rigging any cinema camera requires additional investment that's all.
This is exactly what I think people should do, get the DJI Focus Pro with the pyxis, such an awesome combo.
man I am just itching to get it all in hand to play around with
I really like getting stuff that can work with many cameras
PD movie have a good solution too, not perfect but fits and is a good help, the Lidar follow focus smart live 3, i got mine a week ago and i am amazed how compat good build and it does the job. I will upgrade in future to de Dji focus pro but keeping the PD movie for a smaller kit or B-Camera.
learn something new everyday, Ill have to check that out, like you say could make a good Bcam option
I ordered the Pyxis, view finder, and a base plate. Also a side from that I ordered the the loawa ranger cine zoom lenses but I’m already using those with my bmdpcc6k pros
Solid lens choice with the Laowa Ranger Cine Zooms
I watched this video and I've been shopping for a Sony FX30 and I went to look at the Pocket 6K Pro, then found a deal for an FX30 for $1530 and I got the FX30 primarily for green screen to use the Sony 10-20mm and 18-105mm f/4 G PZ G lens primarily for the Sony in-body lens correction being vastly superior, and they have no focus breathing. Dual Native ISO is the best for f/5.6 lens because you don't have to turn the light sup really high.
good choice thats a great camera
Look into the Vaxis Cine 8" monitor, they also have wireless video transfer monitors with no latency!
Oh thanks PJ will do
Do you think DJI will release a monitor similar to their wireless transmit system without the wireless? the rangefinder would be a cool addition
Oh I hope so….
You can just plug in the hdmi right? Or does the pyxis not have hdmi?
Interesting about the K&F filters, I would of presumed they are a bit crap, would love to hear about IR pollution using them with the Full Frame 6k. You mention not dealing with IR pollution so I presume they perform really well?
Once they arrive Ill publish some tests, if they aren't up to scratch they will get sent back - got to love amazon
@@EntrNmHre that is true you can’t knock Amazon for returns. Will wait in anticipation for your finding. 😉
@@EntrNmHre after watching your video I ordered a set! first one came In today! Im no colorist but it matched my non nd clip with expo pulled down in the HDR wheel!!! I just hope its a matching set in color cast... fyi k&f website has Labor Day sale!!!
@@tellurmomhello Oh thanks for the update, mine have arrived yet…hahaha, lucky you we don't get those sale prices here in France...
There is a solution i have been thinking for the SDI monitor, blackmagic SDI to hdmi converter is small and compact and works with usb-c power.
Great point or you could go with a BPU to V-lock adaptor like a C-box when someone makes one, but that would be pricey in comparison….
Thank you for the video, man. I didn’t know the camera is sold without the battery 😮
For the Monitor Ill be sticking to the Black magic assist sense it's SDI and they dropped in price so you can pick one up for 325. Lenses Ill stick to Native L mount and look for lens quirks over lens quality. So likely gonna Either use the super 35 mode for awhile and go with Sirui Nightwalker or nab a 7artisans spectrum prime. which I used both in the pass both great budget lenses.
those nightwalker lenses and spectrums look awesome...
@@EntrNmHre if they make a full frame version of the night walkers Then Ill easily get them over the 7artisans with out second thought.
Please, reconsider! The cheap models (5 and 7 inches video assist 3G) are extremely dim, at about 400 nits. Almost unusable outdoors. The 12G versions, or any brighter monitor from Feelworld, Shimbol, or Andycine would be a better choice.
I'm an old fart and retired so I have lots of equipment. I own a dozen various size V-mount batteries, almost a dozen CFExpress cards from 128GB to 2TB. My main cameras are Panasonic so I have almost a dozen L-mount lenses but also have the MC-21 adapter from Sigma for my Irix Cine glass. I have several SDI monitors and external SSD support if I want to go that way so all I need is the camera.... I purchased the BM 6k FF when it first came out but I didn't like the battery life or the lack of a TC port so I sold it. I had an issue with the 6kff in that even if I had the audio on the camera peaking into the red it was always down -15 to -20 in post so if the PYXIS is the same I'll use the TC port out to my MixPre3 II. God I hope the TC port works.
its already perfect.
The SDI delay on the hollyland mars1 is unusable even when just used as a monitor. I had two… even the enhanced version is terrible. It’s a hardware issue with cheaper ( Chinese brand ) Monitors that also transmit. Something to be wary about. Not sure about the shambol monitor but hopefully it’s ok.
I haven't received it yet but will review it once in hand, so keep an eye out...
Are the K&F concept ND not IRND?
They are not listed as being IRND, they use different terminology, but are designed for long exposure photography so they have to some form of IR cut in them otherwise everyone would be complaining about the IR pollution….but everyone seems to be praising them when tested against specific IR cut filters….will test and return if no good.
Won't the power cable for the pocket 4k work with the pyxis? It looks like the same connector.
Thats a very good question….
@@EntrNmHre From the image on the website it looks like the same connection. So I'll probably use that with mine
There are already B pu to V mount adapters.
yes, I should have added with “like functionality of wooden camera c-boxes"
Thanks for the cost breakdown.
No problem!
Legit question, are those K&F Solid ND's actually any good? I bought a super cheap set many years ago, 77mm before I started getting serious and they had horrendous color, clarity etc. Aboslutely unsusable for pro use. I since bought Formatt HiTech superslim IRND's and they're amazing. Though I'm planning on selling those for the revar cine VND.
Im asking because the Revar cine covers up to 8 stops which there are some cases in the brightest daylight where I know I might need 9, maybe even 10 stops.
I got one and I’m selling it on eBay to buy the one from H&Y with the revoring
They seem to have very good reviews, from people claiming good colour accuracy and are listed as Full spectrum solid IRNDS. But thats why I am also getting them from amazon, if they aren’t good - they will be returned quickly. The Revar looks like a good option, but when I saw the cost here in Europe…getting close to the Kippertie cost….and more expensive once you add more filters
Just now took some footage and it gives me vignette on a full frame lens! To be precise, I’m using the canon 24-105mm f.4.0! (Vignetting at 24mm)
Thats the REVAR vignetting Rubin?
@@EntrNmHre the K&F
It's really strange that BMD's design team got to the point of figuring out how to fit an ND array into a small, hybrid design, but then rolled back on their own progress when they moved to a body design that is purpose made to have an ND system (See any of Canon's C series or Sony's FS/FX series). Also, Mini V-Lock batteries are so common now that going with something proprietary like a BP-U is kinda short sighted. It's like one step forwards, two steps back.
The placement (I would argue, even the existence) of a large monitor on the side was just silly. It's not even something that's a niche use-case like operator controls (what operator wants to use a touch screen right beside their face??)- It's just a bad industrial design to have most of one side of your camera body to be a vulnerable LCD surface that cannot be protected/flipped etc. They did it right with the micro cinema camera, they just needed to have that setup for the larger form factor. Someone on the design team was clearly stubborn about not having a design without a screen.
hey man that be some awesome drone piloting.
@@EntrNmHre haha thanks! Mostly lawn mowing 😅
I recently bought a Lilliput H5S or so and it is a surprisingly good monitor didn't expect much and never believed I would buy a Lilliput. It has SDI and HDMI and you get anice usb stick on which you can load LUTs. good thing
Oh awesome I will check them out…good monitors are hard to find
I ordered:
Pyxis L Mount
Mofage PL Adapter
DJI Focus Pro
DJI Tranmission Monitor Combo
5“ VA 12G
Atomos Shogun(for ELzone)
Blazar Remus Set
Nisi Athena Set
Side Plate
Not sure if i will use a top handle.
Isnt it incredible that you can get 2 sets of lenses and camera, with wireless distribution so cheaply theses days…just incredible and great choices…the blazar anamorphics are awesome value.
@@EntrNmHre Absolutely yes. And honestly, I can't stand this complaining about supposedly misplaced monitors and supposedly bad sensors. We get so much for so little money, it's amazing how quickly people forget what the situation was like 5-10 years ago. I'm happy that BM listens to its customers and I'm looking forward to the PYXIS.
Totally. When I started a camera kit like this would have cost 200K new….so thank you BMD!
I hope that Atomos and Blackmagic can agree to some cross support. For the EL Zone system to work they have to add the camera/log profile to the system. I have the Ninja V and use it with my GH5. I really do hope that it happens because it’s amazing to expose by stops rather than IRE. If I get a Pyxis (which I really want) I’d get the sdi module to add to my previously mentioned Ninja V.
Concerning battery power I love the v-mount plate that Kondor Blue announced at this year’s NAB. I would love something like that that mounts to a top and maybe side or bottom plate like what Tilta does for the FX6.
@@jordanhurd1988 Ah, thanks for the info. So I can't use El Zone with the Pyxis and Atomos Monitor? How do the monitors from SmallHD handle this?
To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of box cameras. I'm happy with my BMPCC 4K and 6K G2. I fail to see what all the hype is over a box camera. Placing that monitor on the side is going to be a real problem with any cage design. Just my 2 cents worth.
I’m looking for a v mount to Pyxis option and a top and bottom plate combo that also supports mounting top rods. Once I started working with top mounting my lens control systems there’s no going back. Such a great real estate option for rigs
sounds great, thanks Earnie
Can't take this camera seriously without internal NDs, that was the biggest letdown with the 6K FF and they didn't listen. I'd rather turn a S5II into a baby cinema than get 20 different pieces of gear to make the Pyxis usable. It's probably a good studio camera I guess.
Look at the price & the distance between the sensor and the mount it's near impossible the get internal nds
@@mariotriforce Canon has internal NDs on the RF mount with the same flange distance, Sony has them on the E mount with 2 less mm. Everyone I know would've gladly spent an extra thousand for them.
@@mariotriforceStop drinking the koolaid it is totally possible to put internal NDs on mirrorless cameras, just like how the Pyxis could've had a flip out screen but Blackmagic didn't put it in because or product segmentation
@@avx111 is that glass or electronic tho?
Also which cameras?
@@mariotriforce on the C70, up to 10 stops solid NDs with no cross polarization and then the Sony E-NDs on the FX6 and above which I'm not a fan of.
Also, I'm really keeping a keen eye out for approved V-Mount to pyxis adapters, since I have plenty of V mounts I see BP-U to D-Tap adapters already, but I don't wanna roll the dice with non-approved power adapters because I've learned those can totally fry the camera.
Keep and eye on MID49, I think they will have a good solution coming soon.
@@EntrNmHre thank you! Never heard of them. Will do
Ryan from MId49 was the founder of Wooden Camera, its good quality kit ;)
I would have thought you wont be starting form scratch if you are buying this camera. Most of us will have these items already
Oh totally agree, but we own several cameras so one matte box cant be used on two cameras at the same time etc.
I will never trust another blackmagic camera again after seeing that 4.6 g2 get no updates while the one before did. Sketchy camera company with an image I can get from all other companies and its still not up to par with RED, Sony, and Arri is way out of the league.
No matter the brand, I never like hearing someone has had a bad or unenjoyable experience with a camera system. The tech should never kill the love of the art, frustrate you or make you angry. For me thats the worst thing that could happen or hear from someone else's experience. BMD has clearly lost you as a customer….
You can use fixed ND filters in drop-in filter adapters.
Breakthrough, Kolari, and Meike all make them.
3k of course not! by the time u finished it will go to 10k easy
Great job, man! This is where it's all going. If this was Red we'd already be waaay beyond your final cost list. I love your thoughtful selections.
Thanks a ton Keith - oh and yes I should have noted that its was all still cheaper than a komodo x body….great point!
If it can deliver on what the Pocket 6K is already doing, it's a winner. Tricking it out will be a joy.
What does it mean that they have "data loss coverage"
Hi Luis, oh thats a good question. It means if the card gets corrupted or you cant get the files from the card, Angelbird have a free data recovery service all you have to do is send them your card, meaning if its for a client, the footage is highly likely recoverable.
And regarding CFExpress cards. A couple of days ago I had an AngelBird 512GB card completely short out on me. It was the weirdest thing because all of a sudden my full frame CC started blinking on and off. I changed batteries and restarted the camera several times but it wasn’t until I swapped out the card that the problem went away. In this case, I was only doing prep work for an upcoming shoot and did not lose meaningful footage. But just a reminder that despite reliability improvements over the years, cards can still die. And especially if you’re going to film on a card as large as 4TB, back up during breaks. Put yourself in a position where a card failure (or a card getting lost or falling down a street drain or what have you) will lose you the least amount of footage.
Oh I totally agree…Did the card actually fail though or just jam? It may need a firmware update?
@@EntrNmHre It is completely dead. Disk Utility doesn’t see it. The AngelBird app doesn’t recognize it. It was very strange. I had the camera on standby while I adjusted my set and the camera started to blink on and off every couple of seconds. As soon as I swapped cards the problem went away.
If its still under warranty, but even if it isnt contact them directly with a copy of your receipt and I am positive they will do their best to help you….thats been my experience - always positive
I recommend the Tilta Lightweight Shoulder Rig for those who want to film from their shoulder. The design allows me to rig V-mount batteries so they hang behind my shoulder which makes for better balance front to back, and lowers the overall center of gravity. A few other things for new owners to keep in mind: 1. It’s important get the word out that the 12V connector is different than what we’ve been using on the Pockets. It’s a 2-pin Lemo connector which is very standard and should be easy to source. 2. It’s not a bad idea to have at least one BP-U battery in your kit as a failsafe. BM cameras don’t lose frames when switching power sources, so for extra long event recording you can have a V-mount feed and if that battery needs to be swapped out then the BP-U can keep the camera running during the swap. 3. If you choose L-mount and don’t already have tons of glass, then keep the NiSi Athena lenses in mind. They’re optically excellent, well built, affordable, and the L-mount version incorporates a drop-in filter design.
Challenging. Obviously there are benefits to BRAW and the cameras rig ability.....
But its a 6 year old sensor poor in low light, poor battery life, poor rolling shutter, poor auto focus (not that everybody needs it)...
Maybe for my needs A Sony A9iii is better. The global shutter look is so nice and i do lots of car cinematography for clients.
🤔
That being said, i think you made a good call on the L mount. Easy to rent these days also.
Best regards ✅
Sony A9iii’s are super good cameras…no one can debate that.
I imagine the portkeys BM5 WR will work straight away with the camera.
most likely
Also, the NiSi Athena cinema line is an incredible option for a number of reasons, the FS ND drop in system being one of them.
Yes those Nisi Athena lens do look wonderful, but if I was to buy them, I would get a PL set so they are not locked into L mount cameras.
I got the bpu70 for 140 on ebay, for top handle I'm using the one I already have lol
Is that a new or used price for the BPU 70? If new, thats pretty good.
0:01 how do you know it’s a success? They haven’t even sold them to people yet.🤦🏻♂️

The 2024 Pyxis is my entry point into the world of cinematography. All accessories like lenses, external monitor, side plates, handles, EVF, batteries, media storage, etc. will be transferable to the new 2025 Pyxis models. I'm excited to get going with it this summer!

As I photographer I think, that lenses are first and camera body is secondary. I see that many videographers seem to care mostly about the camera brain and then get cheap lenses. I don’t agree.
I think is because they have good lenses already. I am looking to purchase the Pyxis and Lenses wont be on my list because i have a good pair of cinema lenses and an adapter should solve the problem. If you have consistent Lenses you will change camera body over the years and keep the lenses, i have a kit that costs 3 Pyxis camera. I have a friend that have a kit of irix lenses he purchased recently to use with 6K pro and upgrade for Pyxis and go with EF mount.
I never thought my Angénieux zooms were cheap lenses….maybe Im not paid enough and 645 lenses are extremely good quality
