  • If there is one thing I love about our Tesla Model Y, it is road trips! I can't get enough road trips in our Tesla, and even better, I love road tripping with my mattress so I can utilize camp mode instead of hotels.
    Our trusty 2021 Tesla Model Y LR AWD has been perfect during our ownership, and taking road trips in this thing takes no thought at all. Now for preplanning, I do utilize abetterrouteplanner.com to outline the trip and get a feel for areas of opportunity. Once I get in the car and actually start the trip, I just use the on board navigation and make adjustments as I see fit.
    Part 1 of this epic coast to coast trip is taking our Tesla Model Y from Orlando to Phoenix, staying half a day there, then Phoenix to Las Vegas for a full day there. Finally, the trip is wrapped up with a jump from Las Vegas to San Luis Obispo, which is centered between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The whole purpose of this trip is to road trip to the annual Tesla Takeover event.
    Tesla Takeover, hosted by Tesla Owners Club Silicon Valley, is the largest EV gathering of the year. This is not just a Tesla event as we see all types of EV's attend. There are vendors showing off their new products, companies highlighting their kickstarter ideas and major companies highlighting their new products. RV's, 2 seaters, Drones, E-Bikes, the list goes on and on. If you have not attended the annual event, you have to put it on your calendar for next year!

    Hard boiled eggs are a road trip staple. Filling, tasty and nutritious. They keep long enough for week-long road trip. We'll generally eat lunch out of the car and finding something interesting for dinner. Skip breakfast and intermittent fast.

    Another fun long range road trip. I love how easy Tesla makes it not just with the superchargers, but also Autopilot doing the boring mundane interstate driving. Makes it a little less stressful, and gives you a little time to do some slight sightseeing that normally would be difficult/impossible in almost any other car.

    Food is an especially difficult challenge for my wife, who had dietary restrictions. We have found the most efficient option for us is to get food to go before arriving at the supercharger. Then eat while charging. It's often the only way we can get something she can eat. On a few(very few) occasions we have arranged to have food delivered to the supercharger.

    On our long roads trips in our MYP, we find a specific cafe or a restaurant (because we are picky) and make sure we have enough charge to get there and then some more to head to the closest charger. And yes we order ahead so we can eat while we charge. We just avoid the 72kWH chargers. And this strategy has worked out well for couple a thousand mile road trips.

    I use to forget something here or there. Since I have Alexa, I just say...Alexa add this to my Vacation, Shopping, Road Trip list. It stays on the list and I refer to it when I do those trips the next time.
    It's usually me and my wife and she use to be a chef so she likes to make food sometimes. But that might be the thing to do is bring tuna salad, chicken salad, bread or tortillas, shredded lettuce, shredded or slice cheese, diced or tomato slices, pre-made salads and other items you can keep in the travel cooler.
    Subway is my go to spot. It's decent food and a little easier on my system vs. fast food etc.

    I wish Vion would come up with a blackout solution for the rear window of the Model 3. I have their roof insert already, but that final gap at the bottom needs a solution for concealed car camping.
    Great video!

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting, I didn't know there was an issue for the Model 3.

    • @MyTeslaTrek
      @MyTeslaTrek 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BeardedTeslaGuy They have the panel to cover the entire window for sleeping in the Model Y, but the Model 3 doesn’t have one. The only one I’m finding (anywhere online) is the rear roof cover, and it only goes down to just below were the roof tint stops on the back window. That leaves that window open to peepers and light when car camping. If I want to block it completely for security, I have to use my backup front windshield cover to block that window out.
      I think it could be solved with another piece, which would clip like the roof covers, but be like a puzzle piece that fits into that lower curve of the cover, and goes all the way to the deck for the rear window. Then you could remove the lower one, and still have the roof one for driving.
      I hope that helps with a visual since I can’t post a photo here.

    I totally understand what you said about not good places to get food when going on a roadtrip.
    What my wife and I usually do when going on long roadtrips is to pack some frozen meals or she cooks something and we freeze them for our trip. We have those small portable heaters which we use to heat our food when we know we are around 1 hr away from lunch/dinner. It works quite well and since we are usually 3/4 days on the road, we don't have to pack that much since we can buy the same food before heading back home at any local store.
    For breakfast, we pack coffee, yogurt, bread, ham, etc and she makes the breakfast while charging.

    I was interested in getting a MYP, but it seems like evs are horrible for long trips. You waste 30 mins or more every 100 or so miles. Seems like it adds up to a bunch of unnecessary time to get to your destination compared to ICE where you spend 5 mins or less at a gas station to fill up and go.

    • @tobepropst6539
      @tobepropst6539 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It's a downside BUT really only significant for trips 500+ miles. How often do you drive that far?...many start considering flying at that point. Also a 500-600 mile trip might be 10 hours ICE but takes usayne an extra 2 hours in our Tesla. Say you do that 4 times a year that's 8 hours. BUT since we fill up every night at home we never have to do the 10-15min reroute to gas up every week so save about 8 hours. See what I mean? Plus we like the forced stretch/walk time on long road trips anyway

    Watching your videos makes me realize one obvious true game-changer. Your road trips are dictated by charging stations. You spend too much time being distracted by station to station. I know that you’re explaining things, but the major difference between gas and electric is the constant stops and downtime to charge.
    Huge deal-breaker for electric cars.

  • @pillington1338
    @pillington1338 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You probably already know this, but one thing I noticed that could probably shave a bit of time off your trips, is that you could plug in the vehicle and then immediately start filming your update and plan for the next leg of the trip. Thanks for the info. However, I own two MY LR (2021 and 2023) in FL and could never get that mileage even at chill mode driving around 70mph. Maybe ~200 miles I can probably get it if I take the battery down to single digits, which is probably too stressful to do. Do you think tire pressure matters at all? Next time you drive on I15 from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, count the burnt spots on the side of the road (both directions). There are a whole bunch. That's how many cars catch on fire each year most likely while driving in the summer heat. I know that there are road signs that warn people to turn off their AC to avoid overheating. Prior to my Tesla, I used to turn off the AC on any uphill drive and turn it back on on the down slope. I did this even in brand new cars so as not to shorten the life of the motor or even worse, catch on fire. New cars burn too.

    We went through El Paso several weeks ago on a long road trip and were stunned by the lack of super charging infrastructure. We were also disappointed in Deming New Mexico last year when we found out there’s only one version 2 site. It would be nice if they added onto the same site with an equal number of version three stalls. There is a big dead spot in the south east area of New Mexico, where there are several interesting/fun things to do like Carlsbad Caverns, and the town of Ruidoso New Mexico. Very little charging infrastructure up there. Hopefully they will fix that soon.
