It's cool to see these taken to the extreme for the sake of videos, and to see what is better, but it often just comes down to how the charging stations are that day (this includes the Superchargers, as there was a time or two he had to replug).

@dianapennepacker6854 The lucid had a pile of issues while they filmed this, crazy unreliable. Also Kyle needed an encyclopedia of knowledge on charges to keep it close. This is why Kyle said tesla was the best at the end.
Great video, Model S Plaid is King. My Model S Plaid on 19" wheels gives about 40-60 miles more per charge than on 21" wheels. Would love to see that next time.
Porsche is planning to switch to Tesla charging by 2025, just like Rivian and Mercedes-Benz. This move is expected to improve the charging infrastructure for all electric vehicles, given that most people rely solely on their home charger. As a Porsche owner myself, I'm hopeful this will be a positive change.
What a fantastic series guys. Incredibly educational and this is the kind of content that will really help with EV adoption in the future. EV companies need to downplay the “total range at 100%” number. I understand that marketing wise it is what ICE drivers understand but the usefulness of the driving distance on a 100% charge is interesting at best and misleading at worst. I hope they focus on and improve the overall charging curve of these vehicles. How fast my EV can DC charge from 1%-80% is a far more important metric than overall miles. The longer an EV can hold 250-350Kw during a charging session creates far more time savings on road trips than the extra mileage you may get one time off your 100% home charge. When I roadtrip in my EV I still never charge to 100% at home because I charge up as much as I need to to comfortably get to my first charging stop and then begin the charger hopping experience. I get that for serious road warriors stopping every 150 miles is not acceptable, but for those of us with kids and pets it’s hardly a sacrifice. I just want those stops to be 1) filled with reliable charging infrastructure that delivers the kw it advertises, 2) the car charging curve to accept that max power for as long as possible before massively tapering off (up to 70%-80% would be amazing), and 3) there to be some minimal amenities where we stop for food and bathroom breaks. Can’t wait for your next series like this.
What a great video. Made all the miles on the treadmill go by without a thought! OOS makes great stuff, this one kind of felt like grown-up Stand By Me. Let’s see a $33,000 Ioniq 6 RWD on 18’s take them all down!!!!!!! Thanks Ryan, Colton and Kyle!
Kyle....first off...THANKS SO MUCH!!!! for the content you create and what you do for the EV community. I love watching the Out of Spec channels and your content is very informative and entertaining. Second...I have an idea for you. Now that we have seen what expert road trippers can do in these cars, I think the public and I would love to see what would happen if this race was done from a different perspective. That is, making the same trip but doing as a Non-road tripping expert. Just punching in your destination and following the car's trip planner. Let's see how long it would take the car and the charging infrastructure to get just your normal Joe that knows nothing about EV road tripping to the destination and/or back. After all the goal of most, if not all, EV manufacturers is to make it as easy and simple to travel with these cars as possible. I hope you will consider my suggestion.
Unfortunately trip planning is a necessity for any EV driver. If you choose more budget options, some EVs don't even give you a competent trip planner at all (like E-GMP cars with Gen 5W infotainment system). The best solution I'd say is just to use ABRP (a better route planner) and not bother with most in-car nav or trip planning.
@@ArtiePenguin1 I have been driving a Tesla for 4 years now. Travel up and down the East Coast many times and I simply follow the Tesla default trip planning and have never had an issue. Are you saying I would have a problem in a Tesla going coast to coast? Or are you saying if you drive a non-Tesla, you have to plan your trip? Honest question.
@tomkennedy3123 No, my comment was only referring to most non-Teslas requiring trip planning. There are only a few manufacturers who do trip planning almost as good as Tesla. Some like Polestar and Porche come to mind.
Great video! For next time, I'd suggest running ICE car as well, just for a benchmark. ICE car will still need to stop for refuel as well as restroom breaks! I bet difference is not going to be that large
Great video! Back in July of last year these were the three cars that were on my short list. Lucid was #3, Porsche was #2. The Plaid was my selection in large part because of the superior charging network. I've done 9,500 miles of road tripping since then, my longest road trip was 4,700 miles during Thanksgiving week, and not once did I have to wait for a charger. I don't know about the other cars, but the Plaid was so smooth and comfortable I've had four 1,000+ mile drive days.
Model S trip planner issues: I had one trip where I was going from a ChargePoint DC fast charger near Northwood, IA, to the Tesla Supercharger in Eagan, MN. The distance is 99 miles, and the trip planner was estimating that I would get there with 74% SoC, leaving the ChargePoint with 90%. Mind you, this is on I-35 traversing much flatter terrain in southern Minnesota.
3 spectacular hrs later and man I really enjoyed this video. I streamed it like a Netflix movie😂 and the best part was the tension building up at the end of the video. All these cars are wonderful. 🔥🔥
Man, This was epic! I cannot believe that I just spent all that amount of time watching this but I just loved every single minute of it. Well done to all of you and to sum up I guess you could say "it's not about the car but all about the infrastructure". super entertainment!
@@AK-zd6yrI’m a mS-LR owner too and wonder why it would be much faster. Is it greater efficiency not pulling a 3rd motor and 19” wheels for more miles per kW?
Have you considered using the updated a better route planner (ABRP) and super charger info webpages? The best ABRP route planning for the Model S Plaid appears to be Beaver, UT (250 kW for 30 minutes), Green River, UT (150 for 21), Parachute, CO (250 for 13), and Edwards, CO (250 for 19). (83 charging minutes) In dire contrast, the Tesla Trip Planner suggests St. George, UT (250 for 15), Beaver, UT (250 for 10), Richfield, UT (150 for 25 ONLY 4 STALLS), Green River, UT (150 for 20), Grand Junction, CO (150 for 25), and Glenwood Springs, CO (150 for 55). (153 charging minutes). That is an extra 70 minutes of charging and 2 more stops (est. 20 minutes of driving time) using the Tesla Trip Planner. Clearly the Tesla Trip Planner is not ready for prime time trip planning.
It seemed like Colton had ABRP on his iPhone for backup but didn't deviate too much from Tesla's trip planning. Agreed on ABRP being pretty good when it comes to calculating charging stops. For me in an EV6 with no route planning, ABRP is a godsend.
Epic race, I'm from France and finally has the same feeling, tesla superchargers make your life so easy. I did 1200km in 2 days with a small model3 sr+ and it was a nice and smooth experience. Your 3 hours video required me to split the viewing in several times but it is nice to come back to it as soon as you have a break and enjoy that race. Good job... I was listening to the tires screaming on arrival, was really fun and suspens was there, I was even afraid of an accident occurring with these powerful cars... Take care, and once again, good job.;-)
Well done, so great to see EV road trippers that actually knows what they are doing! Here in Denmark youtubers/car magazines thinks they are showing how EV road trips are but in reality they are charging to +90% everytime and arriving with ~30%, also usually they want all the EVs to be charging at the exact same locations. - and when we tell them they are doing it all wrong and could easily be 2-3 hours faster they just ignores us. Cannot wait for the next road trip or cannonball attempt😎
This was comparable if not better then a full night movie. Congrats! It was amazing to see for long trips what are the different platforms are capable of.
Would like to see a future test where you are doing every day real world stuff meaning running the AC to max, driving a little faster, not trying to maximizing every ounce of energy, etc. but just doing a normal every day road trip. To me that’s what most of us are going to do and just really see what those numbers would be where comfort, speed is at the forefront.
Great covering and watched it as the end of my working week - also the length is great, don't chop it up. It was really close at the end which is the best for a tense race movie :)
We need a 4th driving an ice Merc S580 along side. Just to see how slow these EV's are. While the S580 driver blasts full AC and massage seats in comfort the entire way.
What an interesting journey! Thanks a lot for sharing this in such level of detail. Is there a particular reason why the Taycan was not driven in its most efficient „Range“ mode?
LOVE these race videos, I wish there were more hours in Kyle’s days so we could get a cannon ball type or race to Vegas/anywhere trips every couple months. Great entertainment and education/tips I can’t wait for my next road trip.
Fantastic videos. I watched all three episodes. The editing and commentary on this was possibly the best I have ever seen on Out of Spec. The finish was epic and again your editing and capturing that tiree squealing finish left me sweaty-handed. And as you pointed out the Tesla Super Charger network really shined here which has been my experience. I have taken quite a few long trips in my Mode Y and while I have learned a lot of skills about how to road trip efficiently from watching these videos I am no way in the league of you three. What a race!
Race to Vegas The Return 3 hours 34 minutes, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2 hours 58 minutes!! Race to Vegas The Return definitely better, well done all 3 of you.
Watched the whole video straight through in one sitting. Really good stuff. It’s clear that Tesla is the choice for road-tripping thanks to its tight integration with, and the reliability of the supercharger network, but it looks like with a bit of work, the other cars aren’t that far behind. Frankly though, I’m more excited about the big 7-automaker charging network than I am about the NACS transition. And I can’t help but wonder how Ioniq 6 would have performed on this race.
This big 7 automaker network will probably take forever and make the same mistake of outsourcing so much of the manufacturing and support of the network as EA because it will be committee driven not engineering.
Not too long. Kyle came in second. He helps Ryan get the fast charger and helped him with switching the charger. That would have put him ahead. Still a wonderful video. Thanks for the entertainment. Truly spectacular.
I don't really understand this, but I really enjoy watching the entire 3 plus hours video. Best line, Ryan "Just ate a Ham and Cheese Sandwich and it was adequate" meaning it sucked, but I was hungry. A lot of fun.
I’ve almost never had good charging speeds with EA Chargers. At a charger, get 40’ish. Brutal numbers. The limited times I’ve used EA chargers, typically 3 out of 6 chargers are actually working. This is in WA. I think one out of ten I get over 100Kw. Maybe it’s a west coast thing?
One of the last few updates have really made Tesla's G-o-M wonky. I've found the initial percentage it shows while charging is pretty close to what you'll actually get there with if you stay around the speed limit. Big elevation changes uses a bit more than it thinks, I don't think the route planner has enough map granularity to account for those small bursts of power. I basically ignore the big swings in estimated % on arrival. Also, I don't recommend wrapping the handle. The important temp is the contacts, cooling the outer layer of the handle won't affect the pin temps much, if at all, and only risks melting things. They should have put the temp sensor right on the pins so it couldn't be affected by the handle much. Good thing they'll slowly be replaced anyway.
Yeah, especially when he had to shuffle chargers twice in Grand Junction. First he moved over one to the left to let Ryan plug the Taycan into the 350 but that didn't work. So Kyle had to shuffle to the far right unit and plug in on a 175 kW unit. I mean I get why he moved, the Lucid was barely pulling 100 and change.
Wish you guys would have talked more about the autopilot-equivalent systems on the other cars. (Dream drive, and ?). If I was doing road trips like this I would dreamt a good ‘auto driving’ highway system.
Really a fun video. With that said having to turn off the AC (when it's 110), hoping a charging station unit is free and works, waiting or long periods of time to charge, all the planning that has to go in to figuring out how to get to your destination, I'm not ready to give up my ICE vehicles. I don't have to think about it. I fill, up the vehicle, use the facilities, and I'm out of there in five to ten minutes. There's no anxiety with an ICE vehicle. When you get low on fuel there's always a gas station only a few miles away and they all work. I like EV's a lot but the technology and infrastructure has to continue to improve. I will own an EV someday. Just not yet. Cheers!!!
but then the model Y just wins based on charging... not even a real competition... the only reason the lucid and tycoon even HAVE a chance even with EA is because they charge really fast... the ID4 and mach-E charge a good bit slower than the Tesla...add one bad charging stop to that and its not even a race anymore
Another amazing video! 3 hours was easy - and I walked out of Oppenheimer because it was so boring and 3+ hours! My only question… why not have all the AC set to 72 (or whatever) on all cars all the time to eliminate that variable and make it truly about the car & infrastructure?
I'd say individual driver comfort. But there should be a few more rules regarding AC usage. They should be allowed a band of say 5 to 10 degrees where climate can be set it but AC needs to remain enabled during the entire drive while in motion. As in they can only turn off their AC during charging stops. That would eliminate some variables when Kyle was driving with no AC but windows cracked in the Lucid.
This is the VERY FIRST video I've watched from you. And It WAS 3 Hours and 33 minutes long... I watched every second and enjoyed all of it. Thank you!🙃😃
This was both entertaining and informative. It definitely solidified my allegiance to my gas powered vehicle and diesel semi. I don’t have the brain power to deal with all of these calculations and worrying about types of charging stations, battery temps/conditioning, all of the other variables that influence how it charges. Wild ride though.
in these videos it shocking how much issues there still are with charging. After all those years. Still moving cars from plug to plug, trying 3 times to start it up, plugging in hoping you hear some relays clicking..
It's great that all three cars can road trip well. I think a more interesting show would be "New EV owner Roadtrip to Vegas!" Using car route planner and commons tools (ABRP, plug share info etc) and see what happens. For me the takehome from this is Tesla can get a great result without much expertise, mainly using in-car planner.
Great race overall. I think maybe next race you guys should do a 2023 ID4 and a model 3 LFP race to Vegas. I feel like with the faster speeds of the ID4 it may stand a little bit of a chance against the model 3 LFP pack if the charging network is working well.

Great video, Model S Plaid is King. My Model S Plaid on 19" wheels gives about 40-60 miles more per charge than on 21" wheels. Would love to see that next
time.
A race?
Hilarious. Just need to pause the race 2 hours for charging.. If you are LUCKY?
I like how at 14:52 you can see all three guys waving their hands around recording their respective intros at the same time lol
“Race to Vegas in reverse”
“Race to Clear Detailing”
“Race to Fort Collins”
“Race to Windsor”
How about…
“Race FROM Vegas?” 😂
I was literally just thinking that
Yes, that's what I was thinking. Just call it Race From Vegas.
This might be the best week ever! So many long videos! I love it!!!
Ryan cutting every corner resulted in a 20 yard advantage in front of the Lucid in the end, this is hillarious!! 🤣
Great video! For next time, I'd suggest running ICE car as well, just for a benchmark. ICE car will still need to stop for refuel as well as restroom breaks! I bet difference is not going to be that large
This is the best 3.5 hour video on YT, no contest.
Can’t wait to watch this whole video. This is a great test and a really entertaining video.
I can't believe I binge-watched hours of video about EV nerds racing to and from Las Vegas. Very nicely done!
Greatest skill of Kyle is surrounding himself with awesomely nice people. Thoroughly enjoyed the 3 part mini series.
Man, This was epic! I cannot believe that I just spent all that amount of time watching this but I just loved every single minute of it. Well done to all of you and to sum up I guess you could say "it's not about the car but all about the infrastructure". super entertainment!
I wonder if the Tesla Model S LR would have been significantly faster than the Plaid?
As a MSLR owner who road trips constantly, I have zero doubts that it would have been faster. And not by a little.
@@AK-zd6yrI’m a mS-LR owner too and wonder why it would be much faster. Is it greater efficiency not pulling a 3rd motor and 19” wheels for more miles per kW?
@@johnpoldo8817 I understand that the motors in the MSLR are different from those in the Plaid and more efficient, especially in the rear.
That ending!!!! Fastest 3.5 hours of my life ha
(83 charging minutes)
In dire contrast, the Tesla Trip Planner suggests St.
How can a 3 hour video about charging EVs be exciting? I don't know but you guys did it. Congrats.
Moral of the story, Google Maps > Apple Maps
Well done, so great to see EV road trippers that actually knows what they are doing!
Here in Denmark youtubers/car magazines thinks they are showing how EV road trips are but in reality they are charging to +90% everytime and arriving with ~30%, also usually they want all the EVs to be charging at the exact same locations. - and when we tell them they are doing it all wrong and could easily be 2-3 hours faster they just ignores us.
Cannot wait for the next road trip or cannonball attempt😎
always amazed when i see how different the traveling styles are, comparing europe and the US.
Great video! I am worried about the windshield chip on the Taycan... I hope it can be easily fixed :)
Me 8 hours ago: No way I watch this whole damn thing.
Me now: I just finished the whole damn thing. AWESOME!
Great covering and watched it as the end of my working week - also the length is great, don't chop it up. It was really close at the end which is the best for a tense race movie :)
It, in my view, should be a manufacturere's responsibility to inform us of all the separate issues presented in this terrific video.
We need a 4th driving an ice Merc S580 along side. Just to see how slow these EV's are. While the S580 driver blasts full AC and massage seats in comfort the entire way.
It will smoke these EVs
I enjoyed every tire squealing second of this!
I love my f150 limited hybrid with around 700 mile range. I laugh everytime i pass EV charging stations 😂
Yeah you picked the wrong Hood here. Sorry.
Tesla is the clear winner unless you count gas powered cars
Give Kyle a 4 minute handycap for be such a gentleman at the EA station!
All 3 are proven to be good road tripper. To me, creature comfort is most important after a long day of road tripping. For that Lucid Air wins!
Cheers!!!
We need the everyday man’s EV race to Vegas: Model Y, ID4, BOLT or Mach E…
but then the model Y just wins based on charging... not even a real competition... the only reason the lucid and tycoon even HAVE a chance even with EA is because they charge really fast... the ID4 and mach-E charge a good bit slower than the Tesla...add one bad charging stop to that and its not even a race anymore
How are you talking about driving without AC y’all sound crazy and nobody has a SUNROOF
Hate the glass roofs…
Hehehe don’t tell them during NORMAL FAMILY ROAD TRIPS Th ac gonna be blasting
2:09:20 Kyle so busy talking he missed the speed limit change to 55. 😂
Watched the entire video. It kept the suspense all the way to the end, and what an ending indeed!
That was Epic!!! My Apple Watch said my heart rate exceeded 120 bpm 4 times!!! Nice job everyone! Except Signet. FIX YOUR F***ING CHARGERS SIGNET!!!!!
The American infrastructure makes these road trips kind of a hassle.
Next do Oslo to Rome 👍
3:26:00 The ending was awsome with so close between second and third place.
This is the VERY FIRST video I've watched from you. And It WAS 3 Hours and 33 minutes long... I watched every second and enjoyed all of it. Thank you!🙃😃
This is the best content on youtube. You all did really well and kept the excitement going right to the end.
Bigger battery Teslas like Plaid, have another 30 miles of range past zero per design. He didn’t need the last stop.
Amazing trip and vid, guys!!
in these videos it shocking how much issues there still are with charging. After all those years. Still moving cars from plug to plug, trying 3 times to start it up, plugging in hoping you hear some relays clicking..
Ea only started in 2018. Tesla sc 2013.
Would be great to have a GPS log of the trip and then animate that on a map.
To use Kyle's favorite word: EPIC video especially the ending with the Taycan and Lucid racing to the finish. I had a blast watching.
The lucid just screeching it tires at low speeds is just too funny
This is more like a game of strategy than a race. It’s fun to watch the thought processes.
I'd love to see this test each year, so see how (if) it's improving. I love watching the cannonball ones for the same reason
Great race overall. I think maybe next race you guys should do a 2023 ID4 and a model 3 LFP race to Vegas. I feel like with the faster speeds of the ID4 it may stand a little bit of a chance against the model 3 LFP pack if the charging network is working well.
Video is longer than damn Oppenheimer lol I’m in !
That finisher was a perfect climax!
