Thank you very much for making this video. My wife’s car is having this issue and I appreciate all the nuances (and nuisances) that you shared.

I ended up buying the special tool to open the lock rings. It was around $105.

@@dougzaramack2064 For my 2006 murano SL, I initially cleaned the passenger side senor with sandpaper, like what most people recommended. However I had a rough time putting the lock ring back on with the hammer/screwdriver method, Like I mentioned above that I broke down and bought the lock ring tool. Especially since the passenger side was the easier side to put back on.
Last week used Dorman fuel level sensor on the driver side (911-054). Opened up the lock ring with the special tool was a breeze. Some tips: drive around until you have less than half of tank of gas, also I used a turkey baster to suck up some debris that were dropped into the tank when cleaning the lip. I followed some youtube videos for taking out the old fuel pump/sensor, and installing the new Dorman sensor. Last note: had to use a breaker bar to install the lock ring back on!! Just the ½ inch ratchet wrench did not give enough leverage to lock it back on!!! It was a PAIN!!!
All in all the toughest part was installing the lock ring back on, even with the tool. Keep in mind that I found out the murano uses both side sensors (right & left) to determine the fuel level. So a lot of people said it didn’t work when they cleaned (repaired) it, is because they only worked on one side. You actually have to do both sides like me (even thou I only installed new parts on one side, but I cleaned the other side as well). Hopefully I won't see the check engine light anymore...I'm keeping my finger crossed.

without the special tool to install the lock ring, i used 5 vise grips and clamped the lock ring down by the tabs that sticks up from the tank. make sure the lock ring is pushed down enough to slide into the intended slots. then hammer away at it. but my recommendation? buy the special tool.

It has two sensors, it doesn't tell me if it has gas or not, but they told me that it is Fuel level A-Fuel pump, but my question is: if I don't change the sensor, does it affect the car in some way? Thank you

The biggest problem is it caused the check engine light to come on and you cannot get an inspection sticker here in Massachusetts with the light on. Obviously it’s easy to make sure the tank is always full or you calculate by miles per gallon. So if you can deal with it then it shouldn’t affect operation of the vehicle

I’d like to add that I ended up having to have the dealer replace the sensors, they didn’t get the seal on correctly, check engine light again, return to dealer seal replaced properly. Two weeks later check engine light again, return to dealer, they claim cracked gas tank. $600 later tank replaced with new one. Two weeks later check engine light again WTF! Return to dealer again! Now it’s another sensor and another $265 later it has been fine.
