This is a great and detailed video. You explain literally EVERY question I might have with regard to performing this test. That is a quality most youtube video's don't have. You even addressed which terminals to connect the positive and negative probes to and how to find out which lead is positive and netagive. Most videos would just say" connect the probes to the leads and then look at your multimeter and there ya go. I LOVE the detail in how you address everything here.
One of the first things I learned at trade school was take off your watch and especially when you work with electricity and fuel. You disconnected the battery cable but there still can be static electricity.
It will only take ONCE of getting that SHOCK for anyone to remember about wearing metal jewelry/watches while doing car repairs. My Uncle was working on an 18-wheeler engine wearing his watch. He made contact with the battery and it gave him a shock that traveled down his spinal cord stimulator and damaged his spine further. He was in ICU then Rehab. Now he is disabled at 55. Don't wear metal working on vehicles.
I have this very issue with the fuel sensor on my 2010 Nissan rogue not reading correctly. I will likely be doing this soon. Absolutely well detailed video, and easy to understand. :) great find.
Very thorough explanation and detailed video, just 1 question-how do you know how to adjust the arm of sender unit so u get correct reading,if the arm is slitly bent can give you bad reading from been 1/2 full to empty
It wasn't clear whether you replaced or fixed the sensor. If replaced, is that part available for sale? Or does it have to be purchased with the fuel pump?
The reason for these bucket type fuel pumps is "Misfire Monitor." It was so strict, that it was relaxed in 1997. The modular reservoir assembly is to cool the pump, lubricate it and not suck air when low during corners. Many with larger tanks, engineers used some small amount of pressured fuel, "Tee" into the line and run a line to a brass Venturi at the bottom above the filter to create a negative space to draw fuel into the bucket. This covered the fuel pump and kept air out. Air creates a low volume problem that results in low pressure and misfire. The sensor at the bottom is a NTC thermistor. This produces lower resistance when no fuel to cover it, then turns on the light. Before ordering a fuel sender, find the "Fuel Pump" terminal in the relay-fuse center. Using the correct terminals, hook a jumper wire, amp clamp and view the electrical pattern with a lab scope. It should be even and consistent with proper fuel pressure. If not, replace the entire unit. GM designs these to last 5,000hrs. This is about 150k miles. The inside of the bucket will capture dirt and dust and is not hard to open with 3 plastic tabs and a pocket flat blade screwdriver. The tank needs emptied at this point and washed with steaming hot water. Dry with cloth & paper towels then air dry overnight. Use dielectric grease on terminals inside connectors. My watch, ring and wallet went into my tool box after I opened it every AM. This is the reason to touch the fuel pump at the station when getting out. ASE Master Tech since 78, retired.
Question: on a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder...due to age & location of parts, if Im having fuel sensor issues should I just go ahead and replace the fuel pump & that gasket while the gas tank is opened? EXCELLENT video...Im a totally visual learner.

Extremely helpful with my Mazda. I had to purchase a fuel pump without a float. This video perfectly explained how to change mine out and why! Well done.
Depending on the manufacturer (American vs foreign), the ohms reading will sometimes go up, sometimes go down, as the float goes from empty to full. Don't know anything about foreign thinking, but domestic sending units usually have readings of 0-30, 0-90, or 240-10 (I'm guessing on the ten) when going from empty to full (or is it full to empty). Anyway, GM and Ford have opposite ideas about fuel gauge readings. One has the fuel gauge go past full when the circuit is open, the other has the gauge go past empty when the circuit is open, so don't use these ohm readings for all sending units. Check with the manufacturer to see what the ohms reading should be for your particular sending unit.
3:26 Does this process apply along with the fuel pump of a 2003 Chrysler voyager LX because my issue is that the gas fuel needle doesn’t mark the gasoline level correctly so it could be the fuel level sensor so replacing this is easy as shown in this video correct?
Is this the reason why my gas gauge is slow to reach to its gas level? Did not do this before, DO you know what I need to replace? thank you and I liked your video..
Is this part in any way connected to the Fuel Level Sensor 2 on Audi? I watched your Tank System Malfunction videos & a Mieneke mechanic changed this part (pump)-which didn’t make the error light go off, then a 2nd mechanic (3rd party) replaced my Sensor B control module. Light went off for a second & came back on. Now Audi is saying it’s the Fuel Level Sensor 2, saying I’ll need to replace the whole fuel tank.
I had an intermittent fuel level reading on my 2010 350Z. On my car, the wiper was making intermittent contact because the "Teeth" on the semi-circle that varies resistance from high to low (empty-to-full) were lacquered up and partially conducting, (like the volume wiper on old your shop radio that pops and snorts when changing the audio level) The wiper arm had a small copper contact point the rubs against the "teeth" as the arm raises and falls with the level. I basically cleaned the "teeth" on the semi-circle contacts (variable resistor) with gasoline and a Q-tip and the problem was solved. My sensor (wiper arm) had a cover on it that applied pressure and contact to the teeth and the only tricky bit was reattaching the cover in mid-range (half-full) to allow the cover clips to seat....lucked out and only pulled the pump out enough from the tank to allow access to the cover and the teeth embedded in plastic....don't drop the cover in the tank when re-seating!! So no cash out for a new pump or sensor!!

I can't seem to find a reason able price for a new sending unit , (just presuming that that's the problem, it may just be a bad ground but just in case it is the sending unit) However I see the price if a whole fuel pump assembly that seems well made and a little more than half price . Is there any downfall with just replacing the whole pump or should I just get the sending unit and keep with the original pump ? In other words it just seems more practical to replace the whole pump with everything included . I'm not a big fan of after market part s but I'm wondering if it's worth it in your opinion.thanks
I have a honda crv 2007..when i fill up my tank the gauge (electronic display on the dash) show full and increase the miles left to run.. Problem is you might drive for 150 miles straight and not a single bar on the gauge will decrease and the miles are basically the same which is wrong.. Checked my fuel sensor and seems to work since the resistance is changing when i move the sensor up and down.. So my question is this? Is my whole console needs to be replaced or is it possible i have a bad ground circuit somewhere? And from where do i start to investigate?
So my husband just installed a brand new fuel pump in my GMC Yukon 2004 and the psi's are at 60 runs wonderfully but the float is stuck do we have to drop the whole tank again is there a way around this may be a stupid question but if anyone's drop the tank before it's not the greatest and most pleasurable thing to do the fuel pump works great it's just a Float/ sensor is stuck
Nice explanation, in my ford fiesta gauge works, but fuel light doesn't turn on when low fuel. Ford resetted parameters and it works that day, going on and off 3 times, after refilling never turned on again. Any ideas what's going on? Thank you!
Looks like I need to borrow a multimeter; my fuel level on the dash and when filling up have been inaccurate lately. Overfilled the tank to spilling out the fill port the other day because the car didn't stop it like it should have. I have a filter, strainer, pump, pressure regulator coming so my costs are already getting up there, so will test before buying a fuel level indicator. Now that I've seen I won't have to open up the fuel pump assembly to do the level indicator I feel fine with waiting since it is just clipped onto the side.
I have a 2007 model Innova... The moment it starts after 4 to 5 acceleration this meter shows check engine... Also, the pick up drops drastically... Please suggest what could be the problem???

In some cases, the connector may be bas as well. I use the multimeter directly to the fuel level sensor wires and the ohms read correctly, but when I connected it to the connector and attached the ohms reader to the metal parts it gave me nothing to return so I'm thinking I'm just going to buy a new fuel pump instead of going through all the crap

I'm having a hard time finding just the fuel level sensor, did anyone have any luck. Can only find the entire fuel pump for $400-$500. Seems silly to replace the whole thing?
So when my car first starts it shows the right amount but as I drive it it goes down super fast and then after a while of it being warmed up it goes back to normal
is the fuel level sensor also called a sender? i want to purchase the sensor but it seems like in the car's spare parts diagram, it is called a sender. Or maybe it is the wrong part?
My fuel pump works but, in the dash shows i have the fuel tank at half with gas, it actualy is full, because i have checked the fuel pump and it was throwing over with gas out of the tank. So what is it wrong? i have to change the entire mecanism anyway cause this one is way to busted....but in case i get the same reading...what to do? now it shows the tank is half, but it actualy is full that throws over. When i manualy move the level, it moves fine and easy to the up and down, and goes down by itself very gentle and stays down, so i am not sure what is broken with it, perhaps the leg of it doesn't stay well in the tank and is not able to move ? i once had a full tank (full tank in the dash,so i was able to make it show me full tank in the dash) but it was loosing gas like a waterfall because it was to much gas in the tank, so i am never putting more than half tank ( in the dash ) cause i know it will throw over cause is to much.

I got a p0461 and p0455 code on my cobalt. I just had the whole pump replaced last year. Someone said it might just be the evap canister needs to be replaced or cleaned out; however, sometimes I can't fill up properly. Not quite sure what to do. I have a hunch the fuel lines may have something to do with it also, but it's hard for me to test this stuff myself, right now, without a garage.
Not having a garage in cold weather is a killer. Have you tried testing the fuel lines via fuel pressure gauge? You may be able to rent one. Amazon has some low cost options.

What’s a good estimation for having the fuel pump float sensor replaced? Labor wise
Can you recommend where online I can purchase the level sensor only?
I have a 2007 model Innova... The moment it starts after 4 to 5 acceleration this meter shows check engine... Also, the pick up drops drastically... Please suggest what could be the problem???
Thanks so much! you said that fuel assembly was from a subaru. Was it from a brz? looks like the 86s are having these problems. looks like I have to replace the fuel level sensor.
This was a 2010 Impreza non-turbo.
I don't see the link for removing the fuel pump?
In some cases, the connector may be bas as well. I use the multimeter directly to the fuel level sensor wires and the ohms read correctly, but when I connected it to the connector and attached the ohms reader to the metal parts it gave me nothing to return so I'm thinking I'm just going to buy a new fuel pump instead of going through all the crap
On my 08 Chrysler 300 I think my fuel gage is broke. It goes to half and stops. How can I tell if it’s the fuel gage or the fuel sending unit ?
Hey I did this test when I went from lowering it from high to low the reading was okay but everytime I do the test I get a OL for like a second a continues reading
I need to change it in mazda cx7 , where I can buy the ful gauge?

Any idea what would solve the issue of the fuel gauge light on the dash? Mine has never appeared and when I refuel the gauge is really slow. 05 Impreza outback sport
Would the fuel level sensor cause a car to stall or would that be the fuel pump?
The fuel pump will.
I have a Chrysler 300 if my gas gage not reading gas do that mean i need a fuel level sensor?
What about if it’s wired wrong how could that cause a miss reading or not accurate reading
I have a question I tried to calibrate the gas needle on my Honda CR-V 2005 cause I was trying to replace a light 💡 on the creíste some how I ending up with the needle fell off on me I just put it back but it’s not accurate anymore

Sometimes when I turn off the car and back on it will read how much fuel I have then drop to 0 again

Fuel pump was replaced and read has level for a week or so and went out again. Any help?
My car reads the amount of gas but it takes like 30 seconds for it to move up when I fill it and when I'm getting to e when I'm driving giving it gas the needle moves up just a little like a cm then when I brake it goes down a cm what is that ?
Gravity moves the float. Really can’t do much ab tbat
I'm having a hard time finding just the fuel level sensor, did anyone have any luck. Can only find the entire fuel pump for $400-$500. Seems silly to replace the whole thing?
I didn't... did you
Very detailed explanation. Thx!

is the fuel level sensor also called a sender? i want to purchase the sensor but it seems like in the car's spare parts diagram, it is called a sender. Or maybe it is the wrong part?
conseguiste? tambien necesito el sensor
Only question I have is a guy jacked my charger up to take the back right tire off to fix a flat not it’s showing p2068 what can I do to fix it I don’t have 1700 to put is the shop
