  • We hear the word 'freedom' used quite often in our daily lives, but what does it actually mean? This video will discuss:
    - Isaiah Berlin's concept of Positive Liberty, or what is known as being 'one's own master'
    - How this affects our everyday lives
The purpose of The Ideas Mine is to share powerful ideas, from both the past and the present, with the hope that we can all apply them to our everyday lives and think more in-depth about how we can use these ideas to improve the quality of all of our lives.
Don't forget to subscribe so that you never miss any of my future videos.

Wow this was quite the explanation but it seems to me like that we aren't truly ever free and that positive liberty is much more similar to Utilitarianism than we would want

I find this explanation of PL to be inadequate. In loose language, PL is correctly identified as the "freedom to" as opposed to negative-liberty's "freedom from." But what is the "freedom to"?
All human action requires the provision and expenditure of resources. For me to achieve self-actualization as as a matter of right, someone must provide the resources necessary. As resources are finite and limited, this, of course, impinges on the "right" of others to achieve their own dream of self actualization and forces some to work for the benefit of others. Unlike negative liberty, positive liberty is ill-defined and conceptually unbounded. It confers a duty on others to act in your favor rather than to refrain (as negative liberty prescribes) from coercively controlling you. Positive liberty can never be achieved, even in approximation, because it is a never ending competition for resources and the product of the effort of others.
PL fosters conflict, pitting my desires against yours and forcing others to work and provide to meet your desires. As such, it necessarily requires us all to be unequal under the law. Rather than minimizing coercive control, it MANDATES coercive control to ensure that resources are re-distributed to achieve some nebulous notion of equality.
As history has demonstrated, positive liberty is a recipe for poverty and conflict... even genocide.

For me I feel like negative liberty and positive liberty are false dichotomies like a snakes fangs. Why can't you hybridise positive and negative like an antihero and antivillain. The two need one another like left leg and right leg.
