Here is my entertaining (I hope) explanation of positive vs negative liberty: th-cam.com/video/l9ZEbDHPnUU/w-d-xo.html
I find this explanation of PL to be inadequate. In loose language, PL is correctly identified as the "freedom to" as opposed to negative-liberty's "freedom from." But what is the "freedom to"? All human action requires the provision and expenditure of resources. For me to achieve self-actualization as as a matter of right, someone must provide the resources necessary. As resources are finite and limited, this, of course, impinges on the "right" of others to achieve their own dream of self actualization and forces some to work for the benefit of others. Unlike negative liberty, positive liberty is ill-defined and conceptually unbounded. It confers a duty on others to act in your favor rather than to refrain (as negative liberty prescribes) from coercively controlling you. Positive liberty can never be achieved, even in approximation, because it is a never ending competition for resources and the product of the effort of others. PL fosters conflict, pitting my desires against yours and forcing others to work and provide to meet your desires. As such, it necessarily requires us all to be unequal under the law. Rather than minimizing coercive control, it MANDATES coercive control to ensure that resources are re-distributed to achieve some nebulous notion of equality. As history has demonstrated, positive liberty is a recipe for poverty and conflict... even genocide.
Great thought and explanation, I’d love to hear more from you
the balance of limited government , there is not silver bullet , but a lot of the arguments are scams or ways to control the populace . double edged but the trade to others for safety can be abused . being a shithead and having freedom are two separate things .
i am free to disregard reason, and ill force you to be free to disregard reason too!
Super helpful video. Thanks.
Great Video!!!
Thankyou so much for explaining it very clearly
The video was extremely helpful. I must appreciate your articulate language and and explanation.
Explain negative liberty
Welcome to REAL freedom.
Welcome to authoritarianism.
simple but really helpful video! Thank you for these insights!
Hey , I really found this video useful , the visuals were simple but lucid and the explanation was also the same , to the point and thought provoking ! Thank you for the video
Very great content!! Also hope to have a video about Political freedom from Republican.
Wow this was quite the explanation but it seems to me like that we aren't truly ever free and that positive liberty is much more similar to Utilitarianism than we would want
So informative and well explained! Helped me so much, thank you!!!!
For me I feel like negative liberty and positive liberty are false dichotomies like a snakes fangs. Why can't you hybridise positive and negative like an antihero and antivillain. The two need one another like left leg and right leg.
We should add economic financial freedom too
Interesting you should mention that. I have just uploaded a video on positive liberty which touches on that subject. Here is the link if you are interested: th-cam.com/video/PurvlPVuCaM/w-d-xo.html
@@theideasmine9917 thanks will check that out but I hate the term positive and negative liberty I feel they bias misnomers and loaded terms
