Bro, i remember 4 player split screen deathmatches when i was a kid. The Cerebral bore was too op to the point where we had to turn it off in multiplayer.
I'd agree if they didn't downgrade the audio, simplify the explorative levels, and completely break the game's lighting. N64 is the superior version in terms of the game itself, while the FPS and control schemes and graphical options are better in the remaster, it still pales in comparison and is filled with graphical bugs. TL;DR: They deviated too far from the original vision. While they preserved the original Turok's feel in it's remaster, they changed too much in this one.
Something else that you never mentioned: They gave out 25% discounts to anyone who owns Turok 1 HD, even the people who bought it for $5 to begin with. Night Dive is oficially THQ Nordic levels of awesome. Also, quick note as you mentioned motion sickness in the original: Turok 1 did patch in options to turn off the Quake 1 style strafe-bobbing and head-bob, as well as adding an FoV slider. It also has a full level editor now, which somebody used to remake Wolfenstein's first chapter (with a Doom E1M1 fan-map if you can find the secret area).
They did a great job with the first game. I owned both, Turok 1 and Seeds of Evil for the N64. Just being able to play it at 60 FPS is a god send. But they did much more with it and even added mod support. And they didn't gouge my wallet for either. I like these devs. I hope that they continue this trend of re-mastering older classics.

It pissed me off to no end trying to find the last item I needed for three hours fighting endless waves of enemies that respawned every time I turned a corner, and the levels in this game are frickin huge. That´s what I loved about the Doom games. When an enemy is dead it won´t come back, giving you all the time in the world to look for secrets and buttons and the like.

It may sound really stupid but one way to aim better AND know where you're going is to pull up the vertex map and use the "You are here" icon as a crosshair. It really helps in both cases.
+Brian Colfxire Ha, that's a cheat as old as time. I remember doing exactly the same thing on Dark Forces for PS1, I figured it would have a battery or something because it seemed too unfairly helpful (like the IR goggles) and ended up playing through most of the second level without the map turned on. Welcome. To. Hell.
Oh god, compared to dark forces this game was straightforward. I spent more time finishing dark forces on ps1 than I care to admit. Fucking sewer. And that part when you have to run through the closing doors...
I just got through playing this in the last couple days and it was just as good I remember it from my childhood. After finishing it I learned that they altered the maps a bit to make them more streamlined, but I didn't notice at all. Probably because I barely remembered the original maps. Still, it was an amazing remaster. Hopefully it got the game more exposure because it's a really great FPS.
Watching this video while I'm installing this. I have it on N64, but I always had trouble getting past the frame rate, even back then. Can't wait to go through this remaster.
I use to rent this game all the time when I was a kid. I wasn't very good at it. Although admitted I never really took the game seriously. Why? Because both Turok 1 and 2 had some of the most fun cheat codes I had ever had the please of dicking around with. Seriously. Turning on disco mode, making level one Raptors dance in place and blowing them way with a gun that you had no business having that earlier on in the game was some of my fondest memories as a child.
We used to play multiplayer but use a gameshark to teleport to single player and boss levels. It was fun fighting each other when a boss was also hunting you.
I'm assumming that at some point, Samuel "Kaiser" Villareal saw your review of Turok II last year and tought: "Okay, how do I improve this game to remove this flaws and appeal both old school and new players at the same time?" with this awesome remaster being the result... I'm already playing it and I'm on the Lair of the blind ones now, thanks to the objective markers, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to finish the level in less than 2 hours... Anyways, thanks for the review as always Gman...
Quick tip, in level 2, while on the triceratops, use the weapons to destroy the towers in the first section in the level. When all towers are destroyed, a door will open at the end of the area leaving you a nice juicy reward.

I love these upgrades. Can’t wait to play this now. I wish they’d redone part 3 too.
This is a real tasty-looking remaster. Generally, I rather see the community handle older games, but the PC port of Turok 2 was pretty bad and the N64 original ran at like 15 fps (with drops to single-digit frames), it certainly deserved a proper enhancement.
These Nightdive ports is very good. Turok 3 have been N64 exclusive for 20 years, but i read its possible to port that too. Turok Rage Wars were also always a N64 exclusive.
Why no comments on this video? This is weird. I always took Prey (2006) as a spiritual sequel to this Turok game. I loved this back in the N64 days, interested in checking it out again.
The biggest flaw with this game is still the massive levels with no map or markers. You end up wandering around for hours trying to find some switch you missed or where you're supposed to be going, and then even if you do find a switch or lever that you missed, you have no idea what it opens or where.. Otherwise, great game.
I definitely need to try this out. My biggest gripe with the original wasn't the framerate or draw distance, but rather the pain animations that were uninterruptable and momentarily turned off hit detection. You could shoot an enemy in the arm, and while he's reeling in pain, pump a shotgun blast directly into his face and nothing would happen. I wonder if that was fixed in this release but some serious behavior logic updates would be needed.
I disagree, it still has a ton of bugs from the original release which weren't even fixed, and the graphics weren't even fixed up at all, all they did was add a few graphical effects like bloom which clash with the old graphics.
Hey mate, as a fellow Australian i find you exceptionally relate-able maybe because it seems that we're of a similar age group and the games we played as a kid, all of your reviews are reviewing games i used to play on PC. that being said, any chance of you reviewing some of the RTS's of the time? such as the original Command & Conquer, and some of my favourites that seem to be totally lost to time, such as the KKND(Kill Krush'N'Destroy) series. im sure you have to have played some of these RTS's as when it comes to game variety and choice way back when it was pretty tight-knit. Cheers.
Gggmanlives I can respect that, though I must admit. if your last RTS experience was AOE3 I feel bad for the RTS community as a whole. there's a reason they remastered AOE2 haha

Welcome. To. Hell.
Oh god, compared to dark forces this game was straightforward. I spent more time finishing dark forces on ps1 than I care to admit. Fucking sewer. And that part when you have to run through the closing doors...
Hell yeah sonny Jim, I've been waiting for this one
I just got through playing this in the last couple days and it was just as good I remember it from my childhood. After finishing it I learned that they altered the maps a bit to make them more streamlined, but I didn't notice at all. Probably because I barely remembered the original maps. Still, it was an amazing remaster. Hopefully it got the game more exposure because it's a really great FPS.
"A pretty bang up job" *sees enemies clipping through walls*
Man, I loved this game when I was a kid! And it was tough as hell! I'm definitely getting this version to relive some of the memories!
I remember playing 3v1 multiplayer where three people were hunters and one person was a raptor. Raptor claw headshots were the best.
Oh the memories, this is one of the first games i ever played. My gaming career started with Turok 2 :D
The blood looks better (resolution aside) looks better than most games these days!?
Awesome no nonsense videos as always
Oh man, i used to play Turok back then, and it was amazing.
0:46 "thankfully with this remaster nightdive have done a pretty bang up job" proceed to clip through wall like a ghost. Hahaha
Nice review ;)
Very happy to have this downloading and the next four days off. Just started Final Doom with Project Brutality, UDV, and HQPSXMUS mods as well.
Ahh man i just knew you were going to review this, thank you sir!
I never played Turok 2 back in the 90s, but man does this look fun!
This remaster is freaking fantastic!!
Anyways, thanks for the review as always Gman...
the nostalgiaaaaaaa
Quick tip, in level 2, while on the triceratops, use the weapons to destroy the towers in the first section in the level. When all towers are destroyed, a door will open at the end of the area leaving you a nice juicy reward.
20 red life force gems and an ultra health.
I haven't played the original Turok, or Turok 2, because I wasn't even born then. But these remasters look amazing. Definitely will be playing them.
Glad to hear the ND Studios is doing well by these old games - will definitely pick this up during a sale.
the entire lost land is the Primagens lightship, the lush jungles are in a organic spaceship/ pocket dimensions which is the universe's trash can so we have like Dinosaurs and aliens and human settlements
Every single time there is a weapon that vaguely resembles a boomerang the Aussie loves it
These Nightdive ports is very good. Turok 3 have been N64 exclusive for 20 years, but i read its possible to port that too.
Turok Rage Wars were also always a N64 exclusive.
What was missed in this review (moreso for the original version) was the games split screen, which I remember having a blast playing.
Turok 2 on N64 was one of my favorites.
NightDive is the warm embrace in this cold 2020 gaming world
Their remasters are a breath of fresh air from all the cash grab and broken triple a games we get lately.
Beautifully remastered, will purchase right now.
Cheers.
Hey dude, I'm not a huge fan of RTS games, so probably not. The last RTS game I played was age of empires 3...
Gggmanlives I can respect that, though I must admit. if your last RTS experience was AOE3 I feel bad for the RTS community as a whole. there's a reason they remastered AOE2 haha
