Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is a first-person shooter video game developed by Acclaim Studios Austin and published by Acclaim Entertainment. It was released for the Nintendo 64 video game console in 2000. Shadow of Oblivion is the third main installment of the Turok series and a sequel to Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. The game received generally favorable reviews from critics. A separate game, also titled Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion, which is set in the same fictional universe but follows a different storyline, was released for the Game Boy Color in 2000.
Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is a first-person shooter where the player controls the protagonist from a first-person perspective. The player can choose to play the game as either Danielle or Joseph, who both have unique abilities. For example, Danielle can jump higher and carry high-powered weapons, while Joseph can crawl into crevices and use the sniper rifle in conjunction with the night vision goggles. Each character has eight main weapons that may be upgraded in different ways for a total of 16 weapons per character, although some of them are shared. Players can save their progress at any time with the use of a Controller Pak.
This video is a bit more of an overview than a "review", so there might be a few spoilers. You've been warned.
GmanLives thanks Sony Jim
Don't worry this Turok 3 after all.
Gman, any chance you can reveiw skullgirls? Do it you kangaroo
It should be noted that Acclaim Studios was going bankrupt in the late 90's, and the result was the short-comings of Turok 3/Evolution.

One of the coolest things I recall about this game was that when you play as Joseph, you could play his campaign with the Nightvision googles on ALL THE TIME, EVEN IN CUTSCENES. So imagine all the cutscene footage you've seen in this video but now with the nightvision filter. Simply amazing.
Until this very moment I was unaware there was a Turok 3.
@PirateCat91 Clearly. And I grew up playing one and two. Turok 1 is one of my favorite fps ever. But by 2000 I was done with N64 so maybe that's why.

Turok Evolution has a pretty badass cover not gonna lie
I personally really liked Evolution. I think it was mostly because there were a few levels later in the game that are still to this day some of my favorite level design. It was called The Suspended City. The assault on the city had the coolest city siege feeling I had played at the time. Outside that though I don't remember anything about the game other than the multiplayer was fun with friends.
@@Deadsnake989 The environments of evolution beat the earlier games for sure there's so much more going on and it just makes it an interesting setting especially to a 10 year old

Well Turok 3 just got remastered announcement
Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion need a remastered of the game like turok 2 seeds of evil
Six months late, but it now exists and it's fantastic.
Turok 1-3 during my childhood. Awesome game on a awesome console.
And great review. Although I think Turok 3 has one major advantage over the first two which is the save anywhere feature. Turok 2 took me forever due to the insanely convuluted design, especially level 4. And sometimes you’d have an hour or longer before being able to save.
My goodness, the frame rate drops in Turok 3 is undeniably noticeable in comparison to godly flourish Turok 1+2 remastered.
True. I hope this one gets remastered as well.
Would love a Turok 3 remaster
Yes, please.
Comparing Frame rate of Turok 3 with the Turok 1 and 2 HD remasters. I've been playing Turok ever since i was like 8 or 10 years old, and even replaying for years and years later, I've never had problems with any of the 3 main Turok Games on the N64. Of course the HD remasters would have better Frame rates because the technology that we have now these days is like far superior compared to what we had back in the 90s. I've played Turok 3 quite fine and even manage to unlock Joshua as a secret playable character in Turok 3.
@Baron o Spirals
Turok 1 ran like butter on the N64 for the most part, but Turok 2 was by far the worst running game of the entire series. Good reason too, as it was the most complex. Turok 3 toned down the enemy AI, death animations, particle effects, and audio quality when compared to T2, but the framerate was undoubtedly an improvement - still not as smooth as T1, but better than T2. Also, T3 had the least amount of 'fog', which was impressive for the time.
T3 needs a remaster
Just last night I was rewatching this review and today Nightdive has announced a remaster.
Can't wait to play it.
Fun Facts: Acclaim Studios Austin was Iguana Entertainment before they got brought.
Saw your review in the feed and thought I was crazy for not knowing a remaster was coming. Regardless, great review. Haven't played this one.

Turok 3 also ends on an unresolved cliffhanger to this day, which kinda sucked.
Even Turok 2 has a more satisfying ending, as at least Oblivion was still defeated in that game despite the sequel hook.
gameragodzilla yup. I enjoyed the game, but that sequel bait cliffhanger sucked.
You mean the Primagen?
I'm still salty about that cliffhanger.
@@intorsusvolo7834 The Primagen is still out there, waiting and plotting. Let's hope he shows up in a future installment of the franchise.
I forgot how much they butchered the Cerebral Bore. Damn shame.
Next Review: Brute Force
My favourite was Shredder with explosive shells. They totally butchered it in Turok 3.
It makes me curious if the original Half Life could have been ported over to the N64, what with similar visuals and tech being used in Turok 3.
Probably not, but they did get Half Life 1 on Sega Dreamcast and PS2. The cancelled Dreamcast version is pretty interesting and can be played.
@@Gruntvc Yeah, I knew about those. I already tried them both out (the ps2 version was actually my first taste of Half Life many years ago).
Though strictly judging on Turok 3's handling of environments and character models, it wouldn't have been too far fetched for HL1 to be running on there. Albeit at a 20 FPS rate or somewhat less. Consider that the original textures for HL1 could fit in a 3DFX Voodoo 1 (4mb) (128x128 resolution textures, IIRC), and the model complexity was actually quite a bit lower than even Turok 3's models, I don't see why it wouldn't have been able to be ported.
A N64 port wouldn't have been profitable, though, since it would have most likely launched at the very end of the N64's life. Probably a good reason it doesn't exist.

Just wanted to say I've been loving your videos lately! I recently finished up a masters degree, so I've been getting into some retro-gaming with all this new spare time. Your videos have been some of the best reveiws on TH-cam i've been coming across, and they've been a great resource with regards to pointing toward or away from some of the games I was interested in but never played as a kid. Additionally, your reviews have offered good and further insight into game I had spent hours playing when I was younger. You do a great job reviewing, and your stupid joke make me giggle. Keep up the good work!
I remember really loving Turok Evolution. It wasn't on a comparison basis with the rest of the series, but as an FPS at the time it had everything for me: Cool creature enemies, crazy worlds, fun weapons, and I think it was the first FPS I ever saw serious use of some friendly AI (in a couple "chapters"). I replayed it somewhere back, and found some issues with it, but nothing too drastic. Regardless of how you tear it apart though, I always look forward to hearing it or anything of the Turok franchise being discussed again.
I loved this game when I was a kid. The black cartridge always lured me in. I was so terrified of it until I finally sat down and beat it in a matter of hours with my friends when I was like 10. We had it for years beforehand. I always thought it was an amazing game......then I found and played Turok 2. Turok 3 is absolutely pitiful in comparison.
So uh.....there's a remaster announced for 2023 PC and consoles. By Nightdive.
I had this game and there was a marked difficulty change depending on who you picked. Danielle had the harder game overall for several reasons: 1) Her exclusive areas were mostly long falls and bottomless pits of instant death. 2) Her weapon upgrades were either explosives which would damage her or a minigun that chewed through assault rifle ammo. 3) Her height made her a big target even while crouching. 4) She was considerably slower. I was disappointed that a fourth game was never made to finish where the ending left off. It was a big question mark that never got answered.
I think a remake of this on modern systems and fixing its issues and a rewrite could get the series going again.
Turok evolution was the first game I ever played. That game is awesome
Turok 2: where A double barrel pump action shotgun exists
Those are real, though.
@@KillThad
Not really, they're either conversions made by attaching two entire shotguns together, or look nothing like the weapon in Turok 2 (DP-12 being an example of the latter). The one in the game is just a break-open shotgun with no way for pumping it to get ammo into it.
The HALF LIFE references are undeniable.
Your videos are getting more fun to watch. Noice job Sonny Gym.
I honestly loved this game as a child. It was the only Turok game I could beat on my own without my dads help.
Cant wait for that turok evolution video lol
Nightdive : "It's time!"
I remember playing this back in the day.. it was ok. Hi from Brisbane good to see a decent Australian content creator, keep it up dude
Gotta give us that evolution review, and rage wars too, might as well suffer thru my old n64 hell man.
Does this game have a chance at being remastered by Nightdive?
Considering that their system shock remake hasn't been out yet...no.
I thought they found the source code. I've been hoping for a while they can port or re-create 3 and Rage Wars (maybe using Steam multiplayer) for PC.
Does your mom have a chance at being remastered by nightdive
Shwacked
Turok 1 and 2 had PC ports which made remastering far easier for Nightdive, and that's what they used as a base. 3 doesn't have a port at all, so unless they have the original source code and dev files for it, I'd personally say it's quite unlikely.
Night Dive bought the rights, supposedly at least and I think they got the code to it alongside the Turok 2 code as well so it's a matter of money and time I'd guess. Stephen Kick made the joke about whether fans would want them to buy the rights to Turok Evolution as well - I have to imagine his shock when some replied wanting just that.
I remember when I was little I told my cousin I wish I had a Turok game and my mom comes out and says “ i heard you wanted a turok game let’s go to K mart “ and lo and behold this is how I got ahold of this game
Its funny hearing your Thanos ainti-climax analogy, seeing how that's almost exactly what happens at the beginning of Endgame.
Great vid. I hope u review turok evolution next. That's the best one imo
I enjoyed Turok 3, you can tell it was rushed out the door as Acclaim were running into major difficulty. The new team did a good job, but it's very unoptimised, the animation, texture work are lacking compared to Turok 2, the cutscenes in many areas are unfinished, some have animated faces, others don't, including the humans being far more robotic than in the original.
A Nightdive remaster would fix all that.
15:54 legitimately said, "awwwww!" out loud

You forgot to mention pray Tommy's girlfriend in the game isn't too bad looking.
Have not played the game in years.
He did mention her around 3:40.
@@Nutty151 yeah I miss that part was doing something while watching it.
Thanks for pointing it out.
@@ShadowLibrarian Now that you mention it, it's such a shame that 2006's Prey ended in such a cliffhanger, we will never know how the story would have continued and how it was meant to end.
@@Nutty151 yeah because Bethesda cuck us And cancel the second game. If you haven't seen the trailers for it they are definitely worth the watch set the point of disappointment that comes with watching them.
@@ShadowLibrarian I've seen them, and even then the story was already changed drastically. Tommy was no longer the main playable character but merely made a cameo appearance in the game. The "hidden" were not going to show up again by the looks of it, and neither were Tommy's girlfriend nor grandfather. I wish there was an extensive interview with Prey's story-writer to read what his original plans were, as I got really invested in the game's characters, setting, and story. I hate it when developers do not finish a game's storyline, the same thing happened with Half-Life 2, but at least there we had some sort of closure with Laidlaw's "Epistle 3". Sorry for the long rant lol, but it pisses me off.
I think these levels will work great in a half life mod

I have dreams about the beginning segment of this game. I always wondered what was down the streets that the player couldn’t go to.
You know I used to watch my dad play Turok 3 on the N64 (I was too young and this game freaked me out, but I would play Turok 1 & 2 with cheats) but I gotta tell you, this footage looks nothing like I remember and trust me I remember this game very vividly because it scared me shitless. I wonder if the PC & N64 versions look that much different because I see subtle similarities, but this looks extremely different from what I remember.
On a separate note I’m looking forward to Turok: Evolution because for me personally I freaking love that game. If they did a remaster like a legit remaster I’d buy it because it’s fucking awesome.
Hell yes, definitely looking to the Turok Evolution review.
I'm so glad I was able to find this channel thru a gal gun review ^-^
I loved this game on my N64. Was one of my favs honestly. We need a new Turok game i feel.
Night dive studios just anoced a remastered of this game
Seeing some of the comments saying they weren’t aware of this one’s existence. Wow, I’m one of those fans that got this when it got released and for granted it could’ve done better. Don’t get me wrong I can understand why some missed this. And while I agree that Night Dive should do a remaster. I think they should do a remake because imo I feel like there were some things missing and playing which ever character doesn’t change the game much.
And if I recall Acclaim was going through some troubles so I guess there’s that.
Turok 3? I was like WTF, did they make a new Turok game... I did not know there was a Turok 3 made for Nintendo 64.. Color me surprised.
Likewise. I loved the first Turok, although I never bought or played the second. That said I thought that I had kept up with releases pretty well, yet this wasn't even a tiny blip on my radar.
Aww man. I like you too Gman bro. All the best for that review
Turok 3 was my first Turok game and it's the best one of The Turok Series and The Breach music is my favorite.

I’m sad now because I grew up on turok evolution and it was one of my favorite games and I’ve been wanting to play it again years later
I feel like this is a game that would be better if it A) Weren't a Turok game and B) The devs had either switched to PC, or if they were deadset on console, waited for the Sixth gen consoles. There's a lot of ambition here, and its impressive seeing such a Half-Life-esque shooter on the N64, but it kinda failed to find its own footing.
I miss the late nineties and early 2000s, bollocks and all. What a time for gaming.
Oh for the days when I would have my mind fucking blown by a demo of Ready 2 Rumble on the Dreamcast in a games store.
the animations in this game are freakishly amazing!
Turok Evolution was the first Turok I played on the Original Xbox, I was 7-9 Years old but since I didn't know any better, I liked it and also spent a lot of hours playing the versus mode with my younger brother
Great Video.
Any chance of reviewing Rage Wars at some point in the future? that was such a fun Game.
Also, what Emulator and Settings did you use to play Turok 3?
Probably won't do Rage Wars.
Great editing man!
Hey gman, where is the turok evolution review? 😂
They should've introduced a new enemy that kills Josh in the intro,
Maybe a spear thrower type enemy that throws spears similar to Tek Arrows?
Josh gets impaled, whips around and shoots the guy, it explodes and then he falls down the stairs,
Makes alot more sense than one bullet and we would get a new baddie to kill
As a kid I too got stuck on levels in Turok 2 for hours, but Turok 3 was a breeze. 2nd boss was definitely the hardest.
Don't forget about Turok Rage Wars, which I had way more fun with than I was expecting to back in the day
Love you G! Great look into the game
I played all three when they were new and remember the third one being the least confusing as far as level design goes. I thought it was a great game.

Evolution was my fav of the series if only for the weapons.
Oh Turok, sweet childhood nostalgia be thine. I remember getting the first game when I was young because they had a used rental copy for sale at a Blockbuster, and because it was called Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, my Dad thought I'd like it (because I loved dinosaurs, if the implications isn't clear). It was my first FPS and I really enjoyed playing it, though I basically only played it with the cheats on. Fast Forward a couple of years and come Christmas time at the relatives and my aunt gives me a very small box to open for Christmas (something I'm ashamed to say I was crushed at the prospect of at the time, because bigger was always better), which held a copy of Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. It became one of my favorite games of all time, though I still used cheats liberally (I still remember the "unlock all cheats" password: bewareoblivionisathand), but tried to play more on my own. I loved it so much, that when I saw the sequels/side games in the Blockbuster, I had to play them. And thus I discovered the disappointment of Turok 3 and the not-great-without-friends and never-mentioned Turok: Rage Wars, the multiplayer-only entry that was built on Turok 2's surprisingly good multiplayer suite with the intent to cash in on the popularity of Quake Arena and the like. I still rented both games multiple times, but knew that they weren't really what I wanted. So I quietly moved on from Turok, letting it rest in my nostalgia, unblemished by time.
Then I made the mistake of buying Turok: Evolution out of a bargain bin for $3. After trying to play it, I felt like I paid about $5 too much and have to work to remember the good times anything bearing the name "Turok" gave me. Or at least I did until recently, when I bought the PC re-release of Turok 2 that patched everything up, gave it the best control scheme, and made it run smoothly. Now I just focus on that when I think of Turok. Some childhood memories, and that. Anything with numbers bigger than 2...eh, never heard of it.
Oh God evading the subway cars brings back post tramatic stress of the subway level in descent 3. A game released a year earlier. (Btw could be a future review game)

They didn’t. They are still around as avian dinosaurs to terrorize you by pooping on your car and making annoying noises at 3 am on summer mornings. At least they taste good.
One, maybe two dinosaurs aren't shit against bullets. Introduce some sort of bumrush mechanic like Left4Dead or Resident Evil 4 and you have a good challenge.
I don't know much about the Turok series but I remember playing a bit of Turok 2 demo when it came out and noting how the animations were better than other games.
I keep hoping that Night Dive Studios will indeed bring this to PC using the KEX engine, which (I believe) is what they used on the first 2 Turok games, and both of those turned out absolutely fantastic imo.
I would LOVE to play this game with proper frame rates, because the biggest killer for me about this game on the N64 back in the day was just that...the bad frame rates. Same with Turok 2, but that game seemed like it fared a bit better in that regard in the long run.
Turok 3 Remaster PC incoming
I love perfect dark , such a masterpiece
That lava issue could have been quite easy to make it less obtuse, just have a cracked lava nipple thats already dripping fire milk to give an indication that its ready to break.
Like how so many games have cracked walls. Or Perfect Dark it and have an ally character tell you its a target to shoot.
Great review, Ta'l Sed likes to watch more TUROK 😂
I wonder if it will ever get a remaster. Though I feel complete with just 1 and 2.
Even if it's not as good as the first two, it should still be remastered by Nightdive.
I think the last level should have been a stealth mission.
BTW - I'm thinking about creating a challenge for some of the big TH-camrs, maybe you could help popularize this Gman. Here is the challenge:
play the original Turok 2, can be by emulator if you wish, and on any controller you wish
you can choose any difficulty except easy
While playing the game, the gamers only have the ability to look up walkthroughs for help in 3 instances total.
The challenge is to beat the game with the good ending
getting a game over means a fail in the challenge
looking up walkthroughs in 4 or more instances means a fail in the challenge
turning up the brightness is permitted
Some other challenges are beating a level with only bow and talon, no upgrades. (no tek bow, no warblade).
