I wholeheartedly agree . Modern cutting-edge graphics doesnt equal personality for a game . I rather have simplistic graphics with very creative architecture and original enemies that have significance while looking very threadning instead shiny modern graphics with flat designs and enemies that are almost copy-paste material . I mean i give an example from this video which always impressed me as something awesome and Badass in Exhumed/Powerslave with its personality because its a timeless moment: Its was the clip where you see that the protagonist turned into a mummy but when he killed some enemies with his staff , you see he turns normal again and gives that arrogant but triumphantly laugh like a chad . THAT is the aspect i miss in games way too much. Not just only the one-liners but personality in the characters in their small details . No exposition dumps , no time-wasting cutscenes , no unfunny banter like nathan drake but just One-liners and the details that fills the character out . Who needs a origin story or huge introduction to the character when the protagonists personality is enough and you experience the adventure as him? I say nobody . Its like with Duke nukem . The personality is enough , the story pretty simple which underlines the level-design and gameplay and alot of moments that are badass , suspenseful and sometimes even comedic . Thats why retro games are still fun to play. Even with its merits . Because Personality always stays while trends fade away .
This is my exact sentiment for older games, I have fun with newer games but as the old saying goes; they don't make them like they used to. Plus it definitely helps if you grew up playing these kind of games!

I love both the console and the Build versions. True classics and woefully underrated, standing shoulder to shoulder with the best of the era (Quake and the Build trio), definitely not just another Doom clone.
Never thought Id see a remaster of this. Also, can we talk about how awesome Lobotomy Software was, and how amazing the Saturn version was? Despite the fact the console was to develop for, the game was amazing, because they put forth the effort.
Just finished the Saturn version a couple weeks ago. Amazing surprise tbh. It's a pretty good mix between an FPS and a metroidvania. Setting and ambiance are spot on. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Jumps are a bit unfair at times, but generally quite playable even today for a Saturn 3D game.
Well this just made my day! This is how I can show the newer generation what oldschool FPS was really about, without having to wade through all the pixels and long restarts that I naturally accepted as a kid but wouldn't force someone through now. This was some grade-A jank and I will never, ever forget it.
This is one of the games that I had on one of my first gaming PCs as a kid. So many good memories with it. I remember being blown away with how varied the weapons were.
Just played through this for the first time. I really enjoyed my time with it, and that’s in 2024. If I had played this at launch I probably would have been singing its praises for years
This game was mindblowing because it had very high resolution textures for its time. "I barely can see the pixels on the wall!" we used to say looking at our 320x200 monitors. That made us dream about a future in where games could have textures with higher res than our monitors, which is normal today. This was a step onto the future.
This brings back memories, played Exhumed back on the PS1, loved it, to me it was as much fun as the amazing Doom PS1 port. So please its back, will be getting for sure.
Exhumed on Saturn was one of my all time favourites. I completed it, got all the developer dolls etc. And have often wished I still had a Saturn and a copy of the game to play. Only realised a couple of days ago that this had been made.. Can't wait to enjoy it again...
I literally woke up this morning, like any other day, and then I find out PowerSlave is back. Not only this, but I can download it right now. This is truly the best of days. What will Nightdive give me next?
Wow, I can't believe that I've never heard of this game before and it's everything that I love. I would have loved to play this game as a kid! The aesthetics of this game and seeing the dev team photo really brings back a lot of memories and nostalgia of the era of when these games we're first released and I love it! Buying this right now, thanks so much for the exposure Gman, keep up the great work!
Just picked this up on Steam earlier as well. Always a game I wanted to play through but haven't had the opportunity to, and this promises to be the best version of it, couldn't pass it up.
I really respect Night Dive studios for remastering these old games soo modern audience's can appreciate them, I remember faintly playing an Egyptian themed FPS on the Saturn round my old mates house a few times, but never really owned the game myself, I didn't even know the name of it until recently.
I agree. NDS need to give Alien Trilogy the same treatment. I mean heck, Throwback Entertainment is suppose to be "Home of Acclaim classics". I mean wasn't Alien Trilogy published by Acclaim.
I bought this game for my saturn based on the cover art alone back in 96, but was completely blown away by the game- there was nothing else like it at the time. Also, the music rocked hard. I will point out that the reason the level design appears different to the reviewer is because remake is based off the saturn version, which has more open levels with better geometry. It's pretty clear his console experience is based solely on the playstation version, which aside from having an uncapped frame rate, is considered inferior to the saturn version. DF Retro looked at the differences years ago and is worth checking out.
Do you ever have those moments where your heart sinks thinking that you had drunkenly advised someone to work on a remake you've never head of, but then the remake makes it to market, and you're happy to spend 17.99 because, somehow the sonovabich somehow did it? well, I'm happy because the sonovabich did it, and now I get to party like its some sort of time before today, even though it is in fact, today, at least as far as I am being told. Full-Power POWERSLAVE
The Egyptian theme of the game gave me the mummy movie vibes in a way and that's what I like about the game, hopefully we get an Egyptian themed horror game in the future with some mummies and monsters that look like they were made by Clive barker himself cause that would fun and ptsd inducing, but mostly fun 😊👍
Played a demo for Saturn in 1997, bought it when I could, sold it, bought the PS1 version, re-bought the Saturn version again, still have them both in my collection to this day, now, I'm definitely getting the Remaster! This game is dear to my heart.
I'm all for having those various video quality filters. Sometimes having an "ugly" or "oldschool" look is fitting. Also, that image of the dev team on the left at 19:28 looks like a photo shoot of a grunge band haha.
I played this as a kid! Somehow completely forgot about it but as soon as I saw the game, I knew it. Gonna have to grab this and replay some childhood nostalgia.
@@metalmugen I think back then the management weren't as much of a bunch of c*nts compared to the present. It's not the band that's suing, it's the management. Rammstein had the same with their management and decided to drop them because they were too aggressive with that type of crap
One thing to keep in mind for those that like to invert your Y-axis in FPS games: this feature was apparently overlooked for the release and will be coming in an update, so keep that in mind for the time being. It took me a few minutes of sleuth work to figure that out, so I'll personally have to hold off on playing this too much until that update. That said, great game! I played the PC version probably 20+ years ago and for the longest time I couldn't remember what it was called until stumbling across Powerslave EX a couple years ago. While this version is slightly different, it's pretty close to that build of the game (albeit with a few QoL updates). I want to continue to see Nightdive remasters in the years to come, so I bought it to support them; I'd recommend that others to do the same if they can!
15:55 what's the joke behind this random game popping up in Gman's latest video's ? I know he like's returning joke's/things like "swacked" / the scream / the fart. But i don't know, it seems too random and I think I don't understand the joke or something ^^
I didn't played the original version of this game, so i think that it is worth to try a remaster of this game, if this is a remaster and not just a port without any changes. Also, would be great if someone could make a remaster of Chasm The Rift. And dude, i have to ask: what the hell was that 15:52 all about??? Seriously! I'm not living under a rock but i don't get it, what this joke here was about.
You and me both! He's been inserting it into all his videos for a while now, and I have no idea what it is, or if I've forgotten the game it was from when he reviewed it.
@@BrumansVideos Yeah, like is it a simple joke image that he made for his videos to make fun about or is it from some real arcade rail shooter game or something. And why it should be funny in the first place. Cause, i just see this part of the video with that game in, like 6 or 8 time and like "wtf is this?" So i hope that we can get some explanation of what it was and why it should be funny.
The lighting on the Sega Saturn version is incredible even to this day. Loved how things glowed including shots from bad guys and from you! PC version looks bland lighting wise.
You should check out a game called hellslave. It’s a fps being developed on the Saturn here in 2022 and it’s a technical marvel on what the Saturns capabilities are. Shares a lot of similar styles to that of powerslave. Has Saturn mouse support too, be interesting to check out
I think I remember playing this way back when (PC). I remember liking how they'd given Iron Maiden a nod with the title and the Egyptian theme. (For anyone not familiar with Iron Maiden, their 5th studio album "Powerslave" has a strong Egyptian motif in the album artwork, which is also reflected in the album's title track)
This is definitely one of the games I read about and saw the full-page ads for in PC Gamer, but never got to play. It's so cool to experience it, and it's myriad of versions, second-hand here.
Can't wait to get this for Switch. Familiar with the game because of Digital Foundry being big fans. Original developer made the saturn work miracles with their games
i wish they had made the PC version an unlockable bonus or something on here, just watched your revie/comparison from 9 years ago and it looks like a whole nother game.
PC version is good but I still think console version better overall and definitely more unique. One major flaw of PC version is that the levels are absolutely huge, it takes about 20 mins to beat each which makes them repetitive and exhausting to complete, huge mazes everywhere. Still good though and I'd loved to see it included
Great review - I bought this day 1. Fond memories of playing through this as a kid, and being in awe at the graphics and sound and general atmosphere. It was hard as hell on a saga Saturn; definitely enjoying the qol improvements on pc. Another winner from Nightdive. Now just waiting for them to finish SIN 💀👌🏻
Actually remember playing the game , bought it as kind of a accident as I thought it a sequel to "Heretic" back then , was pretty awesome and unique for the time
Thanks uncle G for puting this gem out there, another awesome title I totally overlooked at the moment and just forgot, definetly have to take a look at it after this awesome video, retro pixel art fps have a special place in my heart. By the way the fart sound always get me out guard, please never change. Much love.
This game is really cool, glad I got the game in the collection since it seems it's finally getting it's well deserved notoriety and the price is beginning to raise but regardless I'm glad it's on modern platforms so people can still play it without paying stupid prices. Underappreciated gem, right here. I love those early FPS like Quake, Doom, and Duke Nukem and this game definitely holds it's own against those juggernauts. This and Disruptor are amazing FPS on the PS1. Glad I found them cheap years ago when I was going through my FPS phase of gaming and was foraging the internet to find new FPS and new experiences. If you love FPS, especially early FPS you definitely should give those games a shot.
I know Civvie11 complained about the weapon power bar in Powerslave Exhumed, but I personally like the mechanic with every weapon having its own share of ammo. I find that it encourages switching up weapons constantly and using them according to whatever situation is in front of you. To put it simply, every single weapon is useful...even the sword. Much like DOOM Eternal, you really got to use the right tool for the job. It gets you thinking on your feet and making snap decisions constantly. Throwing bombs of Amun to take out clusters of enemies. Stun-locking the Anubis enemies with the M-60, etc. If a game can cerebrally engage me that well, then I know I have a fun time on my hands.

I really respect Night Dive studios for remastering these old games soo modern audience's can appreciate them, I remember faintly playing an Egyptian themed FPS on the Saturn round my old mates house a few times, but never really owned the game myself, I didn't even know the name of it until recently.
Glad to see the game get a good remaster. Only played the pc version, it was hard and it gave me headaches but the atmosphere was great.
I agree. NDS need to give Alien Trilogy the same treatment. I mean heck, Throwback Entertainment is suppose to be "Home of Acclaim classics". I mean wasn't Alien Trilogy published by Acclaim.
as a classic shooter person I had no idea this existed. Take my damn money!
How have I never heard of this game ? Definitely going on the wishlist.
This will be the next retro FPS I buy. It's decided.
Thank you i used to play the Psx version with my dad was a cool game great memories, already visiting GOG
8:47 Best music in the whole game starts right here, folks!
Nightdive are the perfect remasterers for old games.
Hell yeah!!! Been waiting for this one! Grabbing it on PC and switch right now🔥
The Egyptian theme of the game gave me the mummy movie vibes in a way and that's what I like about the game, hopefully we get an Egyptian themed horror game in the future with some mummies and monsters that look like they were made by Clive barker himself cause that would fun and ptsd inducing, but mostly fun 😊👍
Nightdive made this? I'll buy anything they make sight unseen, watching the video though... the game looks badass.
Played a demo for Saturn in 1997, bought it when I could, sold it, bought the PS1 version, re-bought the Saturn version again, still have them both in my collection to this day, now, I'm definitely getting the Remaster! This game is dear to my heart.
Finally Gman talks about my first FPS!
I picked it up recently and it's still a blast to play!
Looks pretty dope, might pick it up
I'm all for having those various video quality filters. Sometimes having an "ugly" or "oldschool" look is fitting.
Also, that image of the dev team on the left at 19:28 looks like a photo shoot of a grunge band haha.
The soundtrack is free on steam, just check the DLC for Powerslave (classic), you don't need to own the game.
I played this as a kid!
Somehow completely forgot about it but as soon as I saw the game, I knew it.
Gonna have to grab this and replay some childhood nostalgia.
I still can't help feeling they named it Powerslave after the Iron Maiden album because they both have an ancient Egyptian theme.
I'm surprised they didn't send the lawyers in, especially after the whole Ion Maiden thing.
Powerslave is one of my favorite albums. Up The Irons!
@@metalmugen I think back then the management weren't as much of a bunch of c*nts compared to the present. It's not the band that's suing, it's the management. Rammstein had the same with their management and decided to drop them because they were too aggressive with that type of crap
I had this! I had one more secret to unlock, that let's you fly around, right before I stopped playing games.
I take it you came back to gaming?
Hell yeah I'm so getting this!
11 seconds in and I already wanna play this game
This is awesome man, that game definitely needed some much deserved love and get remastered, absolute classic
🎵 Tell me why i have to be a powerslave... 🎵
Dude the quotes that you sneak in are hilarious, never gets old.
15:55 what's the joke behind this random game popping up in Gman's latest video's ?
I know he like's returning joke's/things like "swacked" / the scream / the fart. But i don't know, it seems too random and I think I don't understand the joke or something ^^
This will make a fine addition to my retro shooter collection.
Holy fuck that game over screen is fucking terrifying. Dear lord.
The lighting on the Sega Saturn version is incredible even to this day. Loved how things glowed including shots from bad guys and from you! PC version looks bland lighting wise.
And people said that lighting like that could not be done on the Saturn.
Lobotomy: Hold my beer.
@10:38 "No one must ever know I dropped my glasses in the toilet. Not I, the man who drafted the Paris Peace Accords."
Not about the Iron Maiden album? No thanks.
That Japanese title translates to "1999 A.D.: Resurrection of the Pharaoh," which is honestly more descriptive than "PowerSlave."
Tell me why I had to be a Powerslave
@James Gk I also like Cannibal Corose
Bro I don’t know you constantly
Keep releasing such high quality content so quickly
But Gman, can you tell me why I had to be a Powerslave?
Nightdive Studios really does need to bring us an updated copy of the Alien Trilogy. :D
This is definitely one of the games I read about and saw the full-page ads for in PC Gamer, but never got to play. It's so cool to experience it, and it's myriad of versions, second-hand here.
1:58 retro FPS death sound by Gmanlives himself
The sound of that M60 still gives me a rock on.
1:59 - You sounded like a 90s FPS protagonist getting damaged
Excellent review - like always from the Gmalives!
Nightdive has a habit of taking old games and keeping them as true to the original as possible. God speed to those crazy diamonds.
Actually remember playing the game , bought it as kind of a accident as I thought it a sequel to "Heretic" back then , was pretty awesome and unique for the time
Thanks uncle G
for puting this gem out there, another awesome title I totally overlooked at the moment and just forgot, definetly have to take a look at it after this awesome video, retro pixel art fps have a special place in my heart.
