    I like that all your lights are on the flat of the metal and centered in between each door, no goofy spacing.. Almost like you planned it that way.. Looks great.

    Beautiful lighting. Very clever way of solving the "master" photocell problem.

    This is why I love smarthomes. A simple smartswitch in the toggle box and a outdoor multi sensor (needs lux) or dusk trigger and you have total control.

    Nice looking lights! I'm glad you wore your safety glasses while using that Dremel. You'd be surprised at how many people either forget, or get all macho and don't bother to wear them, only to regret it later. Looks great!

    I used an Astronomic timer to control my exterior lights. I used the same bulbs in my lights. They put out quite a bit of light.

    Many wire strippers have 6-32 and 8-32 screw cutters on them, perfect for trimming down the mounting screws.

    Hi Paul: Wondered about powering 5 lights through 1 photocell, but LEDs are drawing probably 30 watts total so G2G. good to go. Sn-ain in Mad, Sunny 65 in London ON.

    It's a cool solution, wiring them all to one photocell. My only concern is that somebody in the future might put higher output bulbs in then and overload the relay

      I am curious myself what the wattage rating is on the photocell

    • @evan-edstrom
      @evan-edstrom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was my first question also. If you were to buy one off the shelf, looks like it would be adequate. Who knows about the one in this fixture, perhaps it says on it. Take this 1800w photocell for example: www.homedepot.com/p/Defiant-1800-Watt-Light-Control-with-Photocell-59414SPWD/304385620

    • @MrPostFrame

      250 watts for incandescent and halogen and 60 va for leds

    • @RoderickGI
      @RoderickGI 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same concern. The electronics on these types of lights often isn't very robust. You might find them failing if carrying a high load.
      I guess using LEDs is a saving grace though, as they don't use such power.

    • @davidparker8475
      @davidparker8475 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      chase weeks...really this isn't a concern. The bulb output could be doubled or even tripled and would not get close to the 250 watts photocell rating.

    I couldn't see how you were sealing those lights so wind-driven rain won't get behind there an into your walls. Was there a gasket of some sort in the light itself?

    Another possible option is to install a smart switch and put it on a timer or schedule.

  • @matthewwarfield4302

    Nice bug catchers... didn't see any glass for the bottoms. I know, those bulbs don't draw bugs like a bright white light does, but they still draw bugs. I'd find a way to put glass in the bottoms.

    Nice lights that suit the house very well, your wife chose well! But with the wide availability of good and inexpensive programmable timer switches that can be set to follow sunset and sunrise times and incorporate the changes between daylight and standard times, photocells are becoming more and more redundant. Plus with a switch it is much easier to turn on the lights manually during darker overcast days or during storms outside of the programmed times. And that doesn't even address the option and capabilities of a smart home device and associated smart switches/bulbs! I'm wondering how long it will be before you give up on the photocells and install such a timer or adopt a smart home approach to all your lighting, inside and out.

    Have you ever done a setup where you could override the photosensor? I.e. normally operated off photo sensor when power is provided, but also being able to override that photo sensor if you want them on even if it's daylight. I know I could safely do it with a couple relays wired to bypass the photo sensor if one switch was on and use the photo sensor if that switch is off, and still have master power from the power switch, but I don't know if there's a double switch out there that already supports such a feature, or if I'd have to put it together myself. Thanks for all the great videos!

    • @MrPostFrame

      The easiest way would probably be just a smart switch. Although pricey I might go that route at some point.

    Can the one photocell handle the load of all five lights? it was designed for the load of one light.

  • @larrybaydak7391
    @larrybaydak7391 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Logically, it's genius.
    Practically - I would consider this wiring doubtful, perhaps even a fire hazard. The photocell in each light is a 'switch'. Carefully selected to be the cheapest the manufacturer can use to 'switch' ONE SINGLE LIGHT.
    What you have done is wire in five lights on that single electronic switch, probably overloading its rated capacity.
    At best, it will suffer a premature death, causing all your lights to stop working. At worst, it could start a fire.

    • @MrPostFrame
      @MrPostFrame  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The photocell is rated at 250 watts for incandescent and halogens and 60 va for leds.

      @@MrPostFrame That seems good. I am not a licensed electrician, but I know something about electronics and electricity. I spoke up out of concern for the DIY'er who might blindly put a string of high power (fluorescent?) lamps together after watching your video.

    Question for you! I have a similar set up just not all linked to one cell. However when it gets 32 or below one of the three lights will turn off. Once temp is back above freezing boom back on. Any ideas as to why?

    I just ran a third wire connecting all the red wires. Which means any of the photocells can turn on all the lights together.

      What keeps the screws that you trimmed from turning when putting on the finish nut or loosening over time? It seems they should have put a lock nut on the back side of the mount

    Could you swap the active photo cell fixture with one that has a non active cell so the one will not see the other lights? I believe that it see the lights come on and is fooled that it’s light and begins the cycling of ON and OFF. Let us know. 💡

  • @hanzon

    • @MrPostFrame

      I like having lights on all night out here in the country so I haven’t really considered it. Most likely will go with a smart switch with a timer for more control at some point.

    Had the same problem with my flood lights. Our house is white so the light reflected off the paint causing the photocell to think it was daylight.

    I only like 2700k for outdoor lights like this, can't stand those greenish blue lights neighbors install with the glare. What is even worse is when all of their outdoor lights are different color temperatures! Now you need a plastic guard on your switch to keep the kids and wife from turning it off.

  • @cuznjo1

    you can't do what you are doing with incandescent bulbs. lets say you had 5 100 watt bulbs. that would put a 500 watt load on the light sensor. if the sensor is not rated for 500 watt's. it will burn out. you always have to match the load with the sensor you are using.

    • @MrPostFrame
      @MrPostFrame  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right. The sensor is rated at 250 watts for incandescent and halogens and 60va for leds.
