This video is 💯 true as I am a previous Sony user who switched to the S5ii and then later regretted the move and got back to Sony eventually, allow me to explain: you would think that with such a great internal fan, the S5ii would at least shoot 4k 60p non-cropped, nope! Then let this sink in for a second, shooting 120fps in 1080 doesn’t even have phase-detect autofocus, what!!!! So the best stabe in the business and all that other stuff won’t save Panasonic. It’s crazy when someone comes up and says “oh my s5ii is a video-first hybrid camera!” Pathetic really imo

Was recently looking for a camera, choice came down between 2 full and 2 crop. It was Fuji X-S20/Sony A670p and Canon R6 MkII/Lumix S5II. Prices were all pretty similar, especially within the same class.
The Fuji seemed the best value for only $1,700 with an 18-55m lens, but needed it soonish and couldn't find in stock. The A6700 was $1,800 with the 18-135mm lens, and easy to find.
The S5II was $2,100 with the 20-60mm lens. It's actually on sale ATM, with good availability. The R6 is also on sale, and is marked down the most but still costs the most. It's $2,400 with the 24-105mm lens. I liked both of these, but wasn't sure on spending close to $2,500. I wanted to stay under $2,000, and I'm not a super high end professional or anytbing.
Ended up ordering the A6700/18-135mm, and spending $1,861 total, out the door. Hoping I made the right choice. I was actually considering returning for the Lumix. Seemed too expensive, but I guess returning the Sony and just paying the comparatively small difference doesn't seem so bad? And then I think, "Well, for just a tiny bit more, there's the R6..."
I just feel like if you're already wasting $2k on a camera, I guess it makes sense to maybe spend a tiny bit extra to get something that would better serve for longer, but I'm not sure I NEED it, or if either one would genuinely seem any noticably better than the A6700...

Damn thanks for this input. I'm a Sony APSC shooter and the S5 II has been one of those I've been looking at as a potential upgrade. I think the most important thing to consider with all of these cameras is what features are important to you. Like 6k open gate does nothing for me honestly but I love the video focused features like waveform and shutter angle on the S5 II and the ability to record braw ext. is fantastic as I'm a Resolve user and it doesn't handle ProRes.
However i use 120p on my Sony cameras a lot, especially for sports. So to see that something like the FX30 does 4k 120 while the S5 II has crap focus in HD with no 4k 120 just blows my mind. It all comes down to what you need. For a full frame camera for $1800 the S5 II is great value for money.

@@hotfootrabbit I tried so hard to keep the s5ii but believe me, even the sony a6700 is a better camera! There are a lot of things reviewers don’t talk about. The low light performance is horrible.. I truly believe that Panasonic has no idea what they are doing! I think by focusing on a good stabe, they sacrificed A LOT on image quality, dynamic range, color science and high frame rates with autofocus. If you can afford it, I really recommend the A7IV. It’s probably the best hybrid money can buy. Think of it this way, not a lot of people in the world know more about cameras than Gerald Undone. And he thinks the A7IV is the best camera money can buy, he uses it for his videos I believe. I hope this helps a little.

Look I own both the FX30 and S5iix and each has served a purpose. (Never been a fanboy as I shoot photos with Fuji.) So no bias here. After using both, Sony will remain the king of autofocus. No denying that.
But there’s also no denying Sony’s colors (that green tint all over your face) particularly skin tones are washed and gross looking.
If someone wants to switch why wouldn’t they lol. Better colors, many features Sony doesn’t offer (shutter angle, exposure tools, open gate) , the ability to take pictures (fx line are not made for this) with Sony you need a second body for real photography tools 😂 I mean you sound mad that someone would choose to leave a system for something that suits them better. Plus Panasonic full frame vs Sony APSC is barely a $400 difference. FX3 ($4,000) is twice the price of the Panasonic with 1/2 the features and tools, don’t forget.
You should be happy Sony is being challenged so maybe the next time they release a “cinema” line of bodies it will actually include Cinema Tools like Panasonic did. Competition is good for our business. Don’t hate cuz people are abandoning ship for something that has way more to offer. (For them)
And the whole $3000 for a rig 😂😂 cage and external drive cost me $225 bro.
Let people use what works for them, don’t discourage everyone from switching because you’re happy with Sony. Also, you made this click bait so you knew this was going to happen 😂😂😂

In my debate, I want to highlight the advantages of the S5MIIX camera. I will give you that global shutter statement but that’s where it starts and finishes. (Can be fixed in post though) Everything else ehhh. There are way too many noteworthy features worth considering. The S5MIIX offers codecs that are easier to grade and handle on the computer internally and externally compared to any Sony camera. Rigging if that is what you call it is simple, as it involves attaching an affordable 4TB SSD to the cage. As an owner of the S1H, S5, and GH6, I find the S5MIIX to be a suitable option for run-and-gun shooting. You can get a 4TB SSD for under $200 to $250, which would provide an extensive recording time with ProResHQ, taking approximately 24 hours to fill. Additionally, the camera offers three crop modes expanding 1 lens to 3 lens from full-frame to Super35 and pixel by pixel. The S5 has features that have been appreciated by my Sony counterpart who uses the A7SIII, particularly the features and photo flexibility of the S5. The only drawback being the autofocus AT THAT TIME. Also contrary to common belief, the price of the S5MIIX setup would not be $3,000 lol. Considering the cage, SSD holder, the additional cost are around $150 at most! Many users opt for a cage to protect their cameras and allow for flexible rigging we do not count media IN THE PRICE GOOD TRY THOUGH lol. The money saved by choosing the S5MIIX instead of the A7SIII could be utilized for other purposes, such as investing in one or two zoom lenses to enable dual IBIS or acquiring additional gear. The S5MIIX also provides superior anamorphic options, a brighter and more usable screen, a wide range of shortcut options, and the ability to stream. Contrary to the A7SIII, the S5MIIX's screen is viewable even in bright conditions, not having to RIG UP A MONITOR LIKE THE A7SIII. I AM SURE ARE AWARE OF THAT PROBLEM YOU PROBABLY CANT SEE THAT SCREEN IN THE RECORDING NOW. A pretty bright day. S5MIIX offers Open Gate, better shortcuts and so much more. Drawing from my personal experience with Lumix cameras and the A7SIII, I confidently express my opinion based on honesty. While the S5MIIX competes with the A7SIII it is really meant to rival and the A74. Its primary focus lies in hybrid work. If we consider the S2H, it would likely outperform the A7SIII by a long shot IT WILL AT LEAST HAVE FEATURES SIMILAR TO THE GH6 at a full frame scale. It's important to remember that the S1H was the first camera in this new wave of devices, the S1H, earned recognition as the first hybrid Netflix-approved camera. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, it didn't receive the attention it deserved allowing the A7SIII to shine first. The S5MIIX represents Lumix's official mid-wave of devices, typically serving as the transition to the next generation of their new devices. So the camera you should be comparing is the S2H. Even though this mid wave device ended up as your rival lol. This is my perspective, presented in a healthy debate, and I hope it provides valuable insight. All love.

I think most people just need to recognize that every camera has drawbacks and upsides. Figure out what you need, make a list of cameras that suit your actual needs, and go from there. SSD recording is great, but I take about an hour of video per 1000 photos I take, so I didn’t feel like rigging out an S5IIX was going to be worth it. I picked up an S5II as a hybrid and it’s done well on my shoots so far, I love handling it, I never leave my house without it.
I could have probably done everything I’ve done with it so far using a Sony A7IV. People need to chill. It’s all well and good that you can do 17k ultra phuc gate with Apple ProRes BRAW 16Gb/s write speed, but I’m a portrait guy, not making documentaries for Netflix. And neither are 99% of people boasting about these cameras.

It's almost as if you are somehow offended by the (mostly) positive reaction to the S5II and S5IIX. As many have already commented - the choice of camera really comes down to horses for courses. I have used both the S5IIX and in the past the A7SIII. Both have strengths and weaknesses - on balance, today, I would go for the Panny. The A7SIII is older technology, but still holds up agains many newer marques. The S5IIX strikes a great balance between cost and features in my opinion. The key point is that the camera is a means to an end. The user determines the outcome.

Since the launch of A7iii and the introduction of third-party zooms like Tamron 28-75, Sony has gradually become a reliable brand for working professionals in both stills and video. However, it has also become less fun to use (e.g. mediocre screen and IBIS), less value-friendly (e.g. a7IV compared to a7III, expensive flagship A1 without major firmware updates, fewer professional video tools), and less well-rounded (more specialized product line).

    No camera is perfect.
    Sony's best features are :
1- World's best auto-focus ( Panasonic finally has decent auto-focus, and will probably get better over the next 2 years )
2- Higher frame rates than Panasonic cameras ( Panasonic S5 II in APS-C format gives you 4K 60p with as much detail as the Full Frame format, with good rolling-shutter, the draw-back is you need wider lenses for the APS-C format and you need to shoot 1 F-stop faster to get the same DOF as a FF shoot )
    3- World's best low-light. ( Panasonic S5 II is good, but still 1-2 stops behind Sony )
    Panasonic's best features are :
1- World's best IBIS stabilization. You can shoot many handheld shots with motion, especially if your lens is optically stabilized. This is one of my favorite things about Panasonic cameras.
2- Shoots Pro Res RAW and Black-magic RAW with an external recorder.
    3- Shoots non-RAW formats up to 1.9 Gbit/sec using a USB SSD drive. ( 2 TB drive costs $120 US at B&H Photo )
    4- Shoots 5.9 K and 6 K formats.
5- Shoots OPEN GATE full sensor format. Crop in post to the format you want to deliver in
6- Can set your shutter speed in degree angle
I expect the Panasonic S5 II cameras will put pressure on Canon/Nikon/Sony to match some of Panasonic's features.
And I expect Panasonic will improve high-frame rates and rolling shutter speed, and bring their autofocus closer to Sony's performance. ( I'm also curious to see if Panasonic's Cine cameras finally get a Full Frame camera )

I mean, I have an a7s3 and a panasonic s1 and I think they're both great for different things. I shoot them together for multicam and match easily, one has incredible autofocus and the other can shoot 3:2 open gate in 6k. What's not to like lol. I am super pissed at sony though, they're pretty anti consumer with their firmware approach and I think that fuels people wanting to hype a camera like the S5IIx. My S1 got updated continuously for 4 years, my a7s3 doesn't even match the fx3. If i was going to make a new purchase, I know which system would feel like a safer investment

For me it’s exciting Panasonic stepped to the plate, not taking anything from the Sony route. I run and gun without time for a gimbal. IBIS is huge for me. If you really need globalshutter-like pans… simply shoot vertically for those shots, then reframe/crop to 16:9. With the S5II X, you can shoot up to 5952x3968 resolution, so you could still get a full 4K UHD resolution. Even if it’s 4.2.0 200mbps, it will do just fine for those kind of shots. If you absolutely want 4.2.2 ALL-I/ProRes.. you can shoot in 4K and still get over 2K of resolution. This is by far the best solution to solve rollingshutter issues when it matters.. but most people don’t even realize it. Yes, the Sony a7SIII/FX3 have by far the best rolling shutter value, but I would definitely not make my choice based on that. Half price and better IBIS is more appealing to me..

@@NMEdiary It helps indeed (becoming around 14 ms), but if you need to do fast pans with no rolling shutter effect whatsoever, flipping the camera vertically is the best way to go. Although, if there’s some vertical movements in the shots (i.g. People jumping, or something falling on the ground or whatever), you may still get a slant in the other way. But for something like a moving train, or shooting the exterior of a moving car… it’s a game changer!

Currently shooting with the Komodo and the XH2s and the only thing holding me back from the FX3 is the lack of 4:3 or open gate modes. I shoot a lot of anamorphic with 1.75x to 2x and the 16:9 / 17:9 on the FX3 isn’t ideal. This is the second video I have come across from this creator, the other being his video on the insta360 GO 3. Dude seems to have a lot of opinions about gear he has never laid hands on lol. On rolling shutter, the s5ii reads at 21.5ms- meaning its rolling shutter is ok, but not great. Middle of the road. To your point, worse than the a7siii and fx3 at around 9ms and the a6700 at 15.9ms, but better than the a7 IV at 29.9ms, and far better than the a6300 at 34ms. Still plenty fast to film a 5 year old running around, as you use here as your example, and $1500 (at very least) cheaper than the a7sii or fx3. For the crop in higher frame rates, Panasonic is part of the l-mount alliance, and sigma makes both a 16mm 1.4 and 10-18mm 2.8 lens in the aps-c format.
I get that everybody wants to think that they have the "best" gear, but I don't understand how you can judge these things without having used them. I shoot both canon and Panasonic full frame mirrorless, and they both have their advantages and disadvantages. I have not used Sony cameras enough to have an opinion on them, but I am positive that they do as well.
Another way to avoid such "annoying" comments is not using clickbait titles for your videos. You can't have it both ways- trying to draw people into your videos with clickbait (and making revenue off them), but also not wanting them to have an opinion on what you are talking about. That makes no sense.

More like it's overstated on every channel. Every channel slams Sony rolling shutter even though it has been improved. The FX30 has better rs than the Fuji X-T4 but nobody bashed Fuji. The A7iv is ok. It's there but not a dealbreaker.
Having done QC for broadcast for the last few years, I've seen maybe 1 whip pan. People need to learn to not whip cameras around. Get the creative direction right instead of asking for a camera that fixes their mistakes. For sports/wildlife it's understandable, but the majority of everyone else doing travel/wedding/events... it's a useless consideration.

    Fx3 (=4.682 euros) A7siii (=3.999 euros) S5iix (=2.499,00 €).
In order for the Fx3 to be functional, an external monitor MUST BE purchased. It is impossible to use the screen, especially in a bright environment (Sony is "famous" for the poor quality screens they use in all their cameras).
A7siii is probably "past" for Sony.
So what exactly are you comparing?
The most obvious comparison would be with the A7Iv (=€2,820.00). And that's where Sony loses on every level.

Feel you. Getting tired af about all the hype as well. But not just for the lumix, but for everything! You hit the nail on the head. If you have anything along these lines then there's no real reason to be switching. The tech and quality is all very close. Based on my personal and subjective opinion, most of the TH-camrs who are doing the over-hyping, aren't even putting out great looking work with the very camera they are hyping. In the very video they made hyping it.
Yet I see dope creatives making amazing shit with an iPhone or an old sony a6000, canon t5, or something like that.
Friends it's not the camera, it's the person using it! Spend your money on improving YOU and your skills not switching cameras unnecessarily. By focusing on specs and hyped new releases, people are missing the point of what a camera is for. To create art and tell stories.
Learn from my mistakes, I'm invested in too many camera systems and It's become a pain.
As a sony 4-year a7siii user, I still love it and use almost daily (sony a6500 was my first). But have since added BMPCC 6K PRO, URSA Mini Pro G2, Fuji GFX 50sii for photo, Fuji XH2s, and ARRI Alexa Mini to my arsenal (only thanks to being very fortunate in my video business). But guess what? The GAS never stops. After the Sony, other cameras had little or minimal visual improvements to my footage (Besides the Alexa, that's another story).
But even after the Alexa...I still find myself going down rabbit holes of new camera videos. When I have a literal DREAM of a $40K cinema camera right here sitting on my table. A camera some of my favorite films were shot on.
It's a trap that never ends and distraction from going out and creating. Push back! Go and make something. Use what you have and focus on you, not the camera.
sorry that was my ted talk lollll.

As a Lumix user and fan boy I have to agree that there's no place for trash talking any camera brand as they're all amazing in 2023. I think one aspect is that Lumix has the 1.8 primes that are cheaper than most brands, light, all the same size and relatively same weight. They also provide many firmware updates for the lifespan of a camera, where it seems a lot of users are angry at Sony for not doing that. Sony leads the industry in sales for many reasons, including that the glass is amazing quality and quantity and the superior frame rate options. But I think in 2023 we also know that the story and information is more important than the quality of gear, so if you can get the same idea out for cheaper, then I see a valid reason to go with a certain brand or model over another.

I love sony since i got the a7s. I got the a7sii, then the ursa mini. I now have an S1, and it's great... the s5iix looks amazing, but I agree, it's not quite a replacement for the a7siii. If these cameras could blend their features, it would be the perfect mirrorless.
    I love about panasonic:
    - SHUTTER ANGLE, omg this is essential. Why doesn't sony do this?
    - Megapixel count. When you're used to cropping photos with a 22+mp image, you realise how great it is.
    - 6k Open Gate: this is a wonderful feature, especially for anamorphic. This is capped at 4:2:0 internally though...but with ssd on the new panasonic would solve this.
    - IBIS is perfect.
    - I actually feel the image is often better than sony's. Less noisy, and much more pleasing colour. I have worked with a LOT of sony cameras to form this opinon.
    - The fact that i can have a whole bunch of custom presets in a quick menu. Maybe sony has this too, I don't seem to remember my a7sii was as fully feldged in this department, but the newer cameras are probably fine.
    I love about sony:
    - All the framerates, using the full sensor. Capable of higher framerates too.
    - The lowlight capability is still second to none.
    - The autofocus still seems the best, although I have never used it. But is a big selling point. I'm sure s5iix is still lacking here, but has improved a lot.
    - Lens choices
    - Minimal rolling shutter
If sony or panasonic would have all these features, it would be an easy choice. Internal ND too, but that's a bit of a pipe dream. If sony had 6k open gate with shutter angle, it'd be sony all day. But it's all a tradeoff. They are pretty comparable at this point, just depends what features you need. The 4k60 crop is a big downside for the panasonic. If they removed the crop, then i'd say panasonic wins (for me). I actually sold my a7sii to buy the a7siii, but it was delayed too much. Either way, they are both great cameras, that slighty lack where the other shines.

And I’m not getting the X, because I don’t what to “rig” it, the main reason I sold the a7IV was that, I didn’t want to add a monitor for video assist tools, and a gimbal for stabilization.
