First look at the Universal Flight Tablet for the PMDG 737 fleet in Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • Today we're taking a quick look at the long awaited Universal Flight Tablet for the PMDG 737 fleet of aircraft. We look through it's functionality, and take the first steps through configuring a 737 for flight - noting the procedural steps you'll need to work through when programming the aircraft from the tablet data, and why the aircraft might not agree with the tablet (check your load sheet, folks!).

    You CAN import the route from the tablet into the FMC - here's how - th-cam.com/video/g1nLkIUv4gk/w-d-xo.html

    Really nice release. Im sure their will be more features added, but using simbrief and navigraph within the efb is pretty nice to have. Completed a fedex cargo flight from KPHX to KONT this afternoon.

    I thought that in the RTE page (13:30) you can press FLT PLAN REQUEST and it'll sync the flight plan between the EFB and the MCDU. Also, Simbrief did allocate some reserve fuel for the flight, in the OFP (5:55) fuel section, TRIP+TAXI fuel is 2100 KG and FINRES+ALTN is 2270 KG, the latter of which can be entered in the RESERVES field on PERF INIT page.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're right about the FLT PLAN REQUEST - I just had another look at it. It's very clunky, but it DOES work. It of course doesn't pull in the SID or STAR, but it does pull the route in.

      The trouble with doing a full checklist for the rest of the flight is it will vary enormously depending on the airfield. The arrival route and approach are always quite different from one another.

    I’ve moaned elsewhere that the lack of fuel import from the OFP is an oversight but I was partly wrong perhaps. I should have known that IRL the pilots have to program the FMC based on what is printed on the OFP. I suppose one could argue that the aircraft will be fuelled IRL based on what the OFP says, so by the time the pilots power the aircraft up, it would be fuelled accordingly and therefore, set against that context, it would have been better for PMDG to set the fuel load from the OFP. But that would mean an actual link to the FMC, which we shouldn’t have.
    Then again, apparently PMDG will deliver this fuel load from OFP in the future so not sure what to think here…

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I may be wrong about being able to set the aircraft from the tablet - I'll continue looking at it :)

    • @markscars1069

      @@jonbeckett Logically, ground services don’t tend to fuel aircraft with folks onboard other than skeleton crew because of static risk etc. Hence my view that the pilots will arrive to a suitably fuelled aircraft. It’s an interesting one.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@markscars1069 It's a shortcoming of the simulator really. You're absolutely right - the aircraft is well on it's way to being prepared before the crew get on board in the real world. They would of course check what is being done outside during the walk-around, and then verify on-board.

    Hi Jon, I have a question if I may: I want to buy a real tablet (actual physical tablet with Android OS) to use it like this: to connect it via usb cable to my computer; to put on it the TSC or GTN 750 of all MSFS aircraft equipped with TSC or GTN 750; to be able to control them via touchscreen - by touching the screen on my tablet - without changing the view in my aircraft. Is this feasible at this moment in time? I am asking this because I found today a good offer on the market for a decent Lenovo tablet. Your advice would be very appreciated. Sorry if I am slightly off topic.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely. You can get most aircraft with glass screens to pop them out to another view, and drag that to a glass screen. For more involved experiences, like the FMC, or MCDU of a big jet, you'll need something like Aviaworx (there are lots of MCDU/FMC tablet implementations)

    Not your best video Jonathan. For a start Simbrief does calculate reserve fuel by default so putting zero in was just wrong.
    You can import the Simbrief plan into the FMC. It is available as soon as you load it on the UFB.
    You do not turn on probes until engines are started….
    You can get ZFW from the OFP in the tablet.
    I have found your videos immensely helpful in the past. This one was not at all helpful due to the inaccuracies from the get-go. Sorry.

      That's interesting - I had an operational 737 pilot go through the procedure ages ago, and he said it was fine. I know different operators have different standard operating procedures - and they vary widely. I remember listening to C J Lemoine talking about it when he did a video about working for Boeing in his post USAF/USN career. On about Simbrief - I actually double checked the B738 aircraft profile - the "auto" contingency in generate flight plan calculated it with zero extra fuel - seriously. I was surprised too. Obviously you can *force* it, but yeah... interesting.

      You've got me doubting everything now :) I went down a bit of a rabbit hole about startup procedures - according to POH instructions...
      Before start-up - Set the Probe Heat switches to ON.
      After engine start-up - Verify that the Probe Heat switches are still in the ON position.
