  • A beginners guide to ILS in the PMDG 737-700 in Microsoft Flight Simulator - taking the aircraft out for two manual circuits - demonstrating the cockpit settings to enable ILS, and how the symbology reflects your position in the sky. Next we enable a full auto-pilot led ILS approach, and auto-land.

    As ever, I make some small mistakes while talking (I'm terrible at multi-tasking), but they are always instructional - and useful to see the resolutions. We'll keep quiet about leaving the airbrakes partly extended on the second circuit :) Something I completely forgot to talk about - for approach mode to capture, in most aircraft you HAVE to approach the glideslope from below - i.e. fly straight and level into the beam.

    • @dogtaggamer1
      @dogtaggamer1 ปีที่แล้ว

      to add, it really helps to intersect the glideslope at an angle unless you are in the center axis of it if approaching straight on. Good vid!

    There's gonna be some 'experts' (or Armchair Alfies, as a friend of mine calls them) who will downvote this video, but they're missing something. The fact that you made errors. which you spotted and corrected, actually made it easier for me to engage with what you were demonstrating, and thus learn and absorb things easier. Thank you :)

    This was brilliant mate, it really helped me to understand what I was doing wrong with standard ILS approaches as opposed to the usual 'SID-ROUTE-STAR-RNAV' FMC programming. Sometimes it's best to completely re-visit "the basics" on these modern aircraft to keep your hand flying proficiency up to date. Thank you! :)

      @jonbeckett  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It IS so easy :) You just press a few buttons, and the plane pretty much lands itself. You would be surprised how many *very* experienced "simmers" are experts at programming the autopilot, but can't actually fly a plane for toffee - and if they face having to do a manual landing, will invariably kill several hundred people sitting behind them.

    Another idea for the 737 series is how to add fuel and passengers from SIM breif. In the fly by wire it was all done with a button click so it's a bit different now

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never had that happen. It may be your controller configuration. There is a common situation in MSFS where people have various controllers configured that continually hits the starter switches - which depletes the battery and causes exactly what you saw.

    Nicely done.. A small correction on your comment about weather vane effect on downwind.... there is so such effect when in flight.. Physics doesn't allow this. I suspect you are simply seeing the results of a small control input. If flying using the autopilot in track mode, a crab angle will be calculated, but when hand flying, there is nor reason for the plane to try to point into the wind.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Erm... of course physics will allow it. Commercial airliners have a colossal vertical stabiliser, and it's at one end of the aircraft - meaning if the wind is from the side, the plane will gently yaw into the wind.
