I like it. I think this is educational too, in a way. Sort of teaching by example, getting some insight into when and how you see photo opportunities. Also how you interact with the public while shooting photos of them. (Actually I'm surprised most people seemed to ignore you. Maybe it's the way it is in a big tourist city like London.)
Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate that. Honestly most of the time people don’t notice me at all, a lot to do with body language and where I’m looking I think. Being in a big city definitely helps though
I like taking photos in the rain. The lighting is more gentle and adds to the mood of the photo. Reflections in puddles are my favourite. POV and educational videos are great. Enjoyed this video and the tips you shared. Thank you!
I do rainy day shooting but not shooting in the rain. Being an avid amateur, I buy my own stuff and damaging or even having to do a lot wiping and drying off of my equipment isn't a thought I relish. So I tend to shoot from protected entryways, inside looking out, or going in and out of the intermittent rains. I do enjoy it and it's makes for creative shooting ops and makes me have to be thoughtful and creative in my approaches
Yeah I hear you there! Same here to be fair, it can be tricky to keep your gear safe and it’s a good approach to get out of the rain and shoot from a busy vantage point and then head out between showers 👌🏻
Photographs of umbrellas reminds me of Saul Leiter. It seems if there was a red umbrella on the street he would capture it. When in NYC last it rained. I took portraits of people that were framed by their umbrella. Remembering Saul, I hung out on a corner with pedestrians waiting to cross the street. I took a few hundred images of the umbrellas from behind the pedestrians. Like shooting ducks in a pond. Rainy days are not my favorite. I live in Seattle. Rain is a common phenomenon here. Three things. There aren’t a lot of people downtown or anywhere in Seattle. Seattle is nothing like NYC. During the rain there are even less people on the street. There is a common aversion to using umbrellas in Seattle. Not a zero sum but an uncommon use of this instrument. I do love the reflections. Makes me want to go out at night. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Yeah Saul Leiter loved an umbrella. I find it’s hard to take a good photograph of someone with an umbrella these days, but fun nonetheless. Shame there isn’t much foot traffic in Seattle during the rain!
Yeah 100% I always smile but I don’t know why my confidence has been off lately. I think a lot to do with sharing my work on here and Instagram, I put a lot of pressure on myself and it knocks my confidence sometimes! Do love those eye contact photos though
Lovely video and photos, Tim! It's my experience that the most interesting photos happen when the atmosphere is less enjoyable. Rainy days are perfect examples. I really like the variety of compositions and personalities in your photos and how you shared your process. Cheers!
I like the one of the kid with the umbrella handle in his collar, the one of the lady walking through the crowd of people with umbrellas, and the ones at the art gallery, cool! When you just entered the art gallery and I saw a lady leaning on the second floor balcony, I assumed you would use a vertical composition with the group sitting by the pond in the foreground, the statue in the middle, and the lady in the distance, haha. Nice work, Tim. Another perfect pov photography video!
POV’S work well when accompanied by insightful commentary, as yours do, Tim. Nice. Don’t recall black background for pics in prior posts, but it works well, IMO. Rainy venues offer opportunities, but also personal comfort challenges that, for me, can distract from catching special moments and compositions, not to belabor dealing with wet gear. So, I admire your ability to work through it all. Thanks for not doing the trite “puddle reflections” bit - kinda overdone on YT. Agree? Favs include 6 and 11 for creative framing. 2nd indoor fountain shot has fewer distracting elements. Same idea for second “look here” image - construction site comps like that are easy targets and have become classics, but still bring a smile. Cheers!
First of all thank you for this video. It is absolutely cool. You asked for the favorite photo. My favorite photo is number 11. I like this girl captured among all these umbrellas. Super cool. I like taking photos in the rain, because all the lights reflected on the streets, especially, when it's night or early morning. I love this mood when traffic lights are reflected by the streets. Thank you again for this video and i hope i have not ruined the english language. I am not a native speaker. Your videos motivates me to continue with streetphotography. Thank you for that.😊
This rain photography looks interesting, but here in California we only get 16 rainy days a year (I looked it up), so when they do happen people just clear off the streets until it's over.
Keep the POv content Tim always unique and is educational. There is a lot of educational content on you tube as it is but POV videos add that little something extra …imho 👍
Hi Tim, in answer to your pinned comment question, I really like the POV commentary, I think it’s a nice touch and helps me feel I’m out there getting wet with you on those paved with gold London streets. It’s a unique perspective, I’d say continue, onwards and upwards. Lovely to see a channel with inspirational shots included, great stuff all round.
Another great vid!! Nice to see the variety of different images that can be captured in the rain. There is always something to shoot. I liked the boy at the fountain shots and the lady framed by the various umbrellas. Must get out and see what I can find. Thanks again for the inspiration!!
Great POV Video, Tim. Keep making these along with your educational content as you can learn from watching POVs. I feel it would be a good balance for you channel. I'd love to shoot more in the rain. I need to get a lighter, weather sealed camera. Trying to hold an umbrella in one hand and my DSLR in the other is very hard!!
I loved the pic of the kid reaching out to the water in the fountain. I don't take pictures of kids at all, I worry the parents would be angry if they saw me (I know when my son was little, I probably would have had a fit if someone had taken a picture of him). It's a shame because they do make wonderful subjects. Has anyone ever confronted you, or do you just try to be as invisible as possible?
Thanks again for another inspiring POV! From the frames inside the gallery I personally like #32 more than the second (#33) of the kid at the fountain because of the juxtaposition to the statue behind. This day's focal length seems to have been 35 mm APSC (50 mm FF), right? Although my favorite length in the streets is (currently) 18 mm (~28 mm FF), I tend to change it to longer lenses the darker and muddier the outside.
Thanks mate! Appreciate that feedback. All photos on the 23mm f2 - that just lives on my camera now, I love the 35mm ff equivalent, though I really want to try the 18mm especially when I’m in a city, have been really enjoying getting closer these recently! 🙏🏻
My pleasure. It was only about 4 months I owned the 35mm F2, because I've experienced colour fringing at the edges of light sources and the bokeh of smaller lights was more "spiky" than "starry", at least on my X-T5. Last week I have sold both F2s, the 23mm and the 35 mm, in exchange of a Voigtländer 35mm F1.2, which has to be focused manually and obviously needs some practice as my shots from yesterday clearly show. 🧐 For the time being I'll stick to the 18mm F1.4 on the wide side and wait if I'll feel the need of 23mm in the future. 🤔
One of my own struggle to do street photography is my tendency to wait until the scene is cleared up from people and i get a empty scenery. It takes a inner push to embrace the crowd and seize the moment.
Another great video Tim! Love the one with the kid at the fountain in the museum. I gotta ask, isn't it awkward/much harder to take photos and carry umbrella at same time? And you need to ask for waterproof shoes for your birthday! 😂
With difficulty! Haha. Umbrella is a must and I use a wrist strap holding my camera up and resting it on my shoulder - helps a lot but it’s definitely tricky
I’m assuming you mean rest the umbrella on your shoulder Tim? Either that or you’ve created a new way to photograph without looking through the viewfinder/screen? 😂
I don't do street photography in the rain. My camera is weather resistant but none of my lenses are. I was out on the street yesterday for a couple of hours and got one good image.
Yeah it’s definitely not for everyone! One good image in a day is very good in street photography. I’m lucky if I get 10 images I really love in a year
🔴Thanks for watching! Do you like POV style videos like this? Not sure if I should keep making them or focus solely on educational content… 🤔
I like it. I think this is educational too, in a way. Sort of teaching by example, getting some insight into when and how you see photo opportunities. I like the POV style videos. Educational style videos are good too. How about a mix of both?
@@scotskinner4350I think I’ll be sticking to the mix of both, thanks mate!

Rainey nights are even better, the reflections are sometimes superb
Agree with that! I don’t have the energy to do all day and all night these days - getting old lol

And yes, I enjoy your POV content, keep doing them please 😊
Thanks! 📸

Ha ha, Tim. I too feel vibes on eye contact. A smile (from me) usually helps. Never had anyone challenge me yet.

Your POV videos are absolutely mesmerizing, thanks for sharing! And fantastic shots
Ah that’s so lovely of you to say! Thank you, really means a lot 🙏🏻
Great rainy photo walk. 👍👊✨
Thanks! ☔️

Thanks Casey! Really appreciate that mate, those are probs my favourite shots too. Haha missed that! Can’t see them all unfortunately 😅
I really like image 36. I also like the POV style quite a bit so please keep doing them.
Thank you, Pam! 🙏🏻

I love rainy days for photography
It’s great! ☔️🌧️

I’d rather have sun all the time than rain!

Thanks Ash, I appreciate that mate! Perhaps the Fuji x100vi might be a good fit? 👀
You are the man!
Very kind! Haha
Water proof trainers are a god send highly recommend
Might need to invest in a pair!
Not a fan of rain, but ironically I really love rain photography! Soo 'moody' and ambient. Love the shots (p.s. sorry a bit late this week!)
Thanks Courts! I am also not a fan of the rain haha, mend and make do. Bring on the summer I say

I hear you! I think confidence is one of the hardest things about street photography, video about that coming soon
Another great video Tim! Love the one with the kid at the fountain in the museum. I gotta ask, isn't it awkward/much harder to take photos and carry umbrella at same time? And you need to ask for waterproof shoes for your birthday! 😂
Aww thanks mum ☺️. Yes it’s very hard to take photos while holding an umbrella and recording on a GoPro at the same time haha!
Lovely images. Were these images edited in LR or was it a film recipe?
Thank you! Edited in Lightroom with my own presets that I’m working on, will hopefully be releasing them soon!
How do you protect your xe4 from the rain? I always shooting under an umbrella and constantly wiping the camera with a cloth to avoid spoil it.
With difficulty! Haha. Umbrella is a must and I use a wrist strap holding my camera up and resting it on my shoulder - helps a lot but it’s definitely tricky

35 and 36
You walked from Piccadilly Circus to the V&A? How long did that take?!
About 40 mins or so :)
Do you earn money from your street photos directly, if so how?
Not directly no, it’s just hobby for me that I take really seriously because I love everything about it :)
