Conveying the story /emotion that the photographer saw is one if the most challenging aspects of street photography I find and takes endless practice 😊
Yes absolutely! It’s really really hard to even find the meaningful moments let alone capture them with strong composition and good light - that’s the joy of the practice of street photography though in my opinion 🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing this. Lots of giddy ideas and suggestions. I think it's so true that "story" photos are hard, and the best way to find them is to be out a lot with your camera. They're rare and special, but not impossible. Cheers!
Thank you Courts! Yeah it truly does, I would love to live there. Though I spent the day photographing in Birmingham yesterday and had a blast, there are so many street photographers in London, but not much that I can find documenting Birmingham, so I’m looking forward to exploring that 🙏🏻
@@timjamiesonphotos That's super cool! Birmingham defo has a lot happening, and I imagine would tie into similar themes to this video (about finding stories). Can't wait for that, Tim! I'm acc off to Birmingham for a day on Tues, just for some work bits. :)
Rain is my nemesis for taking photos, my smartphone isn't waterproof or splash proof. Street photography is a bit new for me, my personal challenge is not to delete the photos right away when on first glance doesn't seems to convey anything.
Ah yes, photographing in the rain is tricky but it can add so much to images. And yeah definitely never delete as you go, it’s all about practice. Keep trying new things and you’ll get some shots you’re happy with down the line 🙏🏻
People making hand gestures is something I wouldn't have thought of. Thanks! Three weeks until the annual St. Patrick's Day parade. You can bet I'll be there with my camera.
Yeah London is the best city for street photography in the UK in my opinion (not that I’ve been to them all) but I have other videos on my channel about doing street photography in boring places, and also pov videos in lesser known places too :)
Wonderful shots! What are your thoughts about including children in images? I find myself going back and forth about it, especially for use on social media. I'm not against it, just wondering how others think about it. I really liked listening to your though process here. It really adds to helping me learn. Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you! So I look at it like this, I want to document the streets, and you cannot do that fully without including children in your street photography. Also kids are funny and do funny things which can often make for great shots. It’s not like I photograph in a creepy way, for example have a long lens on and photograph kids at the beach. It’s all about documenting for me these days, so I’ve got no issue with photographing families and kids on the street at all :)
@@timjamiesonphotos Thanks for the feedback. I agree! I was an elementary school teacher for 32 years and just love seeing the wonderful expressions and actions of kids. But, because of my teaching background and all of the concerns we had to worry about with this issue in that profession, it sometimes makes me question it. We had a no photo list we had to reference all the time to make sure none of the students on that list were in publicly displayed photos. Take care!
Points well made and illustrated, Tim. Many YT channels advise viewers to tell a story, but they fall short on the “how to” part, so bravo for gap filling. Text overlays to drive home points would have been helpful, IMO. However, by carefully listening to the voice-over, viewers can garner takeaways. With time, patience, and lots of experience one can hone the skills to spot/anticipate story telling compositions. IMO, easier to start w/static subjects that have a bit of mystery and let viewers build their own stories, like the sidewalk balloon. The risk is that viewers won’t concoct a story at all. Cheers!

You're really good, Tim. The photos are good! I've said that a thousand times.
That’s so very kind of you to say! Means a lot - feedback like that keeps me going 🙏🏻

Ahh, amazing video man! I find London has so much 'magic' to it.

My pleasure! Definitely something I look out for regularly on the street. And yes, sounds great - which parade?
@@timjamiesonphotos The US's only bi-state St. Patrick's Day parade in the Quad Cities U.S.A.

Hello Tim nice video you should try Liverpool Chinatown on Chinese New year. You will love it. When you get the chance to go to Liverpool.
Thanks Mark, will probably do CNY in Liverpool next year :)
Great video Tim, really need a trip down to London soon, it’s been 13 months since I was last down there
Thank you, Brian! Can’t beat London for street photography in the UK, in my opinion :)
It seems to be so easy to do street photography in London, however it’s more challenging elsewhere

Beautiful images Tim. Love the bright colors. Which film recipe did you use? Excellent lesson on using photos to tell a story.
Thank you that’s very kind! I photograph in RAW and post-process my photos in Lightroom myself :)
Very interesting and creative photos, what's your camera and the setup, if you don't mind.
Thanks! Glad you think so. Fujifilm X-E4, 23mm lens. Manual setting and images edited in Lightroom :)
