- In this video I give a behind the scenes look at how I go about my street photography while out on a photo walk. This was my first time visiting Manchester and while I only scratched the surface I came away with a handful of shots I'm really happy with.

🔴 Had such a great time photographing Manchester, what a city! If you enjoyed the video please pop a like and a comment, it really helps with the algorithm - thanks for watching!
Your calm demeanor is inspiring! When I see a good chance opportunity, I sometimes panic and fumble it, trying too hard. I like your chilled out approach.
Haha thank you, Jose! That’s not always the case, often I’m running around like a crazy person obsessing over the shot 😂 but I try not to take it too seriously most of the time haha
TH-cam suggested you, I subscribed on the first video. Now you are being promoted all over my feed. I thought I was a bit of a street photographer. I’m not even out of the gate compared to you. I’m not binge watching because there is simply too much valuable information in each video to mémorise. LOVE the way you present, explain and speak in such a calm unexaggerated way. Brilliant
Wow, thank you David! That’s quite the compliment. Appreciate your support man! ✌🏻
Love this approach for a POV and your live insights, very refreshing and great shots of Manny!
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate that. Glad you enjoyed 🙏🏻
I went into Manchester a couple of months ago, making the most of that mini heatwave to try my first ever bit of street photography, I felt a bit self conscious but enjoyed myself.
Glad to hear it!
I'm so glad to have found your channel! Manchester, here I come.
Thank you, David! Greatly appreciated 🙏🏻 - happy shooting!
Always interesting to see what other photographers make of my home city.
Of course you can find stories everywhere, but I feel I could work this city every weekend for the rest of my life and never come away from a photo walk completely empty-handed.
That’s confident 😅
As a photographer (but not street) and having worked in central Manchest for 15 years I really enjoyed your shots and noting how the place looks since I left the area in 1985. An excellent video.
That’s awesome! So happy to hear that mate, thanks for the comment :)
@@timjamiesonphotos Yes, when I worked there I came by train into Oxford Road station, walked along Oxford street, turned right into Portland street, then cut through China Town in order to get to my office in Mosely Street. Your excellent images brought back memories.
Great video as ever Tim! Really useful to hear the thought process, how the weather changes what you’re looking for, and the little nods to your previous lesson-type videos. Thanks yet again!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Really enjoyed this Tim, your commentary is really interesting and I love how you can make what some might call ugly into intriguing with your knack for colour and composition, well done!
Aww thanks mum! Much appreciated as always 🙏🏻
What a great video Tim. I enjoy hearing your thought processes about the shots. So useful.
Thanks so much! Really happy to hear that 😊😊
Really enjoyed (as ever), Tim!
Such a diverse range of shots. Particular fave was the phone box around 6 minutes, and seeing your thought process to hold the right subject.
Thanks Courts! I like that shot a lot too, really enjoy that it says ‘You OK Hun?’ On their bag as well haha
@@timjamiesonphotos Haha!! I did feel the same about the Taxi shot. I cannot tell you the amount of times I adjust my hat, hair, top in a car window to see the dreaded face on the other side. Glad was a cool experience to share the socials though!
I'd really love the return to Manchester soon, had only been the once in Picadilly during the winter time - which was a cool ambience (but not the full experience I felt).
Haha yeah so easy to do! I only felt like we had a taste in a day or two, definitely want to go back soon! Hopefully Serco move to Manchester, then I’ll be happy to go up there whenever 😂
Haha, that would be cool! Or by the least I'd vote for a "Big city monthly away day!".
I hope your Saturday snapping in Bristol the other week was fruitful!
I really like this style of video. You have shown us several different techniques to use, in good light and not so good, which is super helpful. Your images are some of the best out there right now, imho. Thanks Tim.
Thank you so much, Mary! I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and that is quite the compliment, you’re too kind 🙏🏻
Looks like a awesome visit. Good work bro. Enjoyed the video.
Thanks mate!
Thanks for shooting Manchester. As a super beginner photographer it was good to see your thought process when discussing some of the places ive taken pictures in and to try and remember what i was thinking in that same scene. Thanks
Hey Richard! My pleasure, really happy you enjoyed and found it useful. I had a great time shooting in Manchester :)
I'm just blown away by every capture of street photography. Glad to have found your channel Tim! Love from India
Thank you! Welcome to the channel 📸
@@timjamiesonphotos it's a pleasure to watch your videos!
Greetings from Singapore. I lived and worked in Salford in the early/mid 80's, just as Salford Docks were being flattened. It was bleak, and little recollection of sunshine. I photographed the docks and a rag and bone man. Obviously its changed a lot....
Hello! Yeah I bet it’s very different from the ‘80s. Would love to see your shots from how it looked back then!
Tim, thanks for sharing! Interesting video 😀
And i like the music too 😍
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻
Nice light and shadow photography!! The blues as background music 👍👍
Thanks a lot! Glad you like the tunes too 👌🏻
Bro, I really like your work, it grabs my attention.
Your videos are also very enjoyable because you are explaining your process, your thoughts and ideas for the the intended shot.
I feel I have actually learnt something every time I watch your video.
Your channel is fast becoming one of my favourites.
Please continue the good work.
Thank you 🙏.
Haha your TH-cam name made me laugh. Thanks for the kind words mate, much appreciated 🙏🏻
Another brilliant video, Tim. So great that you share your process, how you approach a scene and what makes an interesting image. Thanks for making and sharing your work
Thank you for the comment, Ash! I really appreciate it 🙏🏻
08:44 gave me a real chuckle, great shots as well thoroughly enjoyed the video!
Haha yeah, was an awkward one 😂
I do Manchester in my lunch hour. Got a few thousand photos over the last year. Recognised most of what you visited, but you found a few I haven't got to. Most of mine is more abstract, closeups or partials, of things. But I'm practising with more street photography with people in shot.
New subscriber. I have really enjoyed your POV, with concise commentary (voiceover) :)
Thank you! Really appreciate that 🙏🏻
You are pretty good at seeing! Thanks for the inspiration.
Haha thanks!
Just subbed!!!! I like what you’re doing!!!!!! Well done my friend and I’m looking forward to the adventure!!!!!!
Thank you for the sub, Terry! Much appreciated. I’m excited to see how the channel evolves over time, great to have you along for the ride 🙏🏻
nice POV ‘ I used to do those videos as well - My older channels
Cheers 👍🏻
Great video..live in Manchester and yes it's brilliant with the right light. If dull however it's tricky
Thank you! It’s a fun city for sure in my short experience
Brilliant work, really enjoyed it!!!
Thank you, Martin! Much appreciated 👌🏻
Thanks for sharing the POV and your thought process in the voiceover. I enjoy your approach and philosophy... and the photos ;) Manchester seems like such a visually rich city, with so much texture and character. Looking forward to more learning and inspiration from your videos. Cheers!
Thanks so much, Michael! I must admit I found it very challenging to shoot there, but it was enjoyable to explore :)
@@timjamiesonphotos I think it would be fun to trade places with another photographer to see what we each find in the other’s place. Probably learn to appreciate our own place in a different way. Lol.
Oh yeah 100% would love to do that!
Wow very helpful, just toying with the idea of street photography. Unfortunately I live in the country and the towns are very small.
Thanks mate, yeah can be tricky when you live in the sticks, but it’d fun to try in a small town or city when you can :)
Nice video subscribed nice work good tips thanks.......nice to see Manchester from your point of view
Thanks, Anthony! Much appreciated 🙏🏻
I've never been to Manchester, but watching this video of you walking the streets and doing street photography showed a few structures and buildings that are very similar to Berlin's streets. I live in Berlin. The shots under the rail bridges are so like a similar structure in Yorck Strasse Berlin. Those lovely boxed in oblongs of sunlight between each bridge make an easy frame that can work well with the brickwork. Cheers for the great video, and good commentary. Sean
Thanks Sean! It was my first visit to Manchester and I really enjoyed it. I would absolutely love to visit Berlin too, it looks beautiful there - hope to make it one day 🙏🏻
Berlin is well worth the visit. People book a short visit regret it! so at least nice long weekend gives you enough time get about the city. Cheers, Sean@@timjamiesonphotos
Super cool to see and hear about your process! Great watch :)
Thanks a lot! Glad you found it useful :)
Just bought my first camera in my life last month. Really appreciate your video and it definitely inspired me a looooot!!!
Awesome! That’s an exciting time! Glad you enjoyed the video and happy shooting to you 📸
Lovely video and great images. A place I would love to loose myself with a camera that’s has so much contrasts. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the kind words, Victor! Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻
Great video and a very enjoyable watch ,and has given me some good ideas for my street photography 😀
Fantastic! Great to hear, appreciate you checking it out and dropping a comment - happy shooting! 📸
What a great video. Wish I had the courage to go out and do it
Thank you, Danny! You should do it man, street photography changed my life. Start off small and from further away and work your way up from there 🙏🏻
@timjamiesonphotos thanks. I have a Sony A6400 and a kit lens 16-55m (3.5 - 5.6) plus the Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens. Should o use the sigma? I also have a GoPro hero 10 to capture video. I've always wanted to do videos like this.
Great video Tim, some belting images too. Glad to see you enjoyed your time in my home City, I’ve not shot any Street in Manchester for nearly three months due to injury, hoping to get back there tomorrow ( today now ), I live roughly 20 miles out now but I was born literally 1 1/2 miles from where you took the window reflections.
Thanks a lot mate! That’s great, happy to hear you’ll be getting back out shooting. And I really enjoyed your city, hope to go back soon!
You're making me want to grab my camera right now and walk around downtown.
That’s the best compliment of all! Really happy to hear that mate, you should totally do it! 📸
Some beautiful photos. As another exercise ask people can I take your photo? You will be surprised how many people say yes.
Thanks! I don’t ask for portraits as that’s not the kind of photography I like, but each to their own :)
Hey Tim, thanks for sharing your thought process. They’re really helpful! One question - for the shots with strong emphasis on shadows, do you use spot metering instead of multi?
My pleasure! If I’m shooting to capture dark shadows then I shoot full manual, so don’t need a metering mode :)
Tim i think you should do a street Photography setting guide
It’s on my list!
I feel like when the scene is right but the shots are wrong (such as the tree area).. for me it really helps to step back and approach it as a cityscape instead. Let the setting itself be the subject instead of finding the composition within it. A lot of the time, when seen from a distance, it becomes part of a larger story. Just my two cents.
Super fun video. The kind that makes you antsy when you watch it at the wrong time because you can't head straight out to shoot ha.
Yeah I get what you mean, I guess it depends on what kind of photography you like to do. Really appreciate the comment and I’m so happy to hear the video has made you want to go out and shoot - my goal completed!
Quality post, mix of images, music and understated commentary. Challenging venue with mix of old and new, sensory overload, but you handled it well, IMO. Dutch tilt take on archway images a nice touch - person in light trap of arches nearer to you would have been super.
Suggestion: number images to facilitate viewer comment. Cheers!
Thanks a lot! That’s very kind 🙏🏻. Numbered images has been mentioned before, I must remember to do that in the next POV video! Thanks for the feedback :)
Superb Tim. 👍
Thanks so much as always mate!
Very interesting Tim I love street photography myself I like to capture the real characters which is difficult sometimes. As when you are out shooting you don't always find them. I use a manual lens 35mm 1.4 full frame a mirrorless camera zone focus hyperfocal when I am out shooting. I enjoyed watching your video.
Thanks mate! Yeah 100% the great and the worst thing about street photography is you never know what you’re going to get when you’re out! I definitely need to experiment more with some focusing 🤔
Thanks for the excellent video Tim, enjoying your channel. What do you use to mount your GoPro for your POV' footage please ?
Thanks a lot! Really appreciate that. I use a budget chest mount from Amazon :)
Great video as always! Love the voice overs.
Just curious do you have a “preferred” f stop?
Thank you, Ryan! Unless at night I try to keep my f stop above f8 as I tend to like my images to have a deep depth of field :)
So beautiful! Gorgeous photos! Gorgeous photo colors! The city of Manchester is so beautiful! What camera do you shoot with? Which lens should I choose for street photography Thank you very much ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks heaps! Manchester is lovely. In this vid I’m using the Fuji X-E4 and 35mm f2. If you want more advice about lenses check out my latest video about gear: th-cam.com/video/4jEa4iIofVA/w-d-xo.html
Nice brother🎉
Cheers!
Have you ever done a Photographic walk around York? if not I can very highly recommend it.
I live in Salford which is of course next door to Manchester.
I haven’t but it’s on my list!
Great video and cool shots. Did you use a 23 f2 lens. I am usually using the 35 f2 but I am wondering to buy me the 23 f2 35
Thanks a lot! All shot in the 35 f2 - but I really want to pick up the 23 and shoot a bit wider :)
Thank you for this video. I just have one question. Do you use a polarise filter outside in that bright sunlight?
My pleasure! No I don’t currently use any filters :)
Another gem Tim. I'm a stranger to Manchester but now seeing the colourful urban architecture of late 18/19th century at the beginning of your street walk i think id really enjoy a visit. I tried tracing the area you were in. Northern quarter of the city?
Thank you, Harry! Yeah we went all over the centre of the city, which is very compact, but mainly focussed on the northern parts :)
@@timjamiesonphotos few years back I stayed couple of days central near the mainline station. Really couldn't get on with the place at all. I've not been fair, seems there is more on offer. Going on the list!
It was tricky I must say, I had to work really hard for shots - but it’s definitely a fun city to explore (but I prefer Liverpool 😂)
Hi great vid and pics! What settings do you find yourself shooting in for this type of street photography, especially scenes with harsh light and deep shadows? Full manual? I am assuming you're shooting with the X-E4 (by the looks of it..)?
Hey mate! I tend to pretty much always use full auto (I’m a control freak haha) but occasionally use aperture priority. And yeah X-E4 😁
@@timjamiesonphotos oooh cool didn’t expect that - how do you expose for the highlights in full auto, won’t the camera try and expose for the entire scene?
Great episode Tim 🎈 The “sunglasses on the head” at 04:42 is my favorite together with the slow shutter experiment at 08:20. What’s the shutter speed you used for that picture? Guess you can incorporate the camera’s internal shake resistance with down to 1/8 handheld , possible?
Thanks a lot! Really appreciate it. I used 1/30 for that shot, my camera doesn’t have IBIS, so just tried to have a steady hand ha
Hello may i ask what are you using as a body cam? It looks good and seems like it doesn't have any distortion. At least for me
Hey, sure it’s a GoPro hero 8 - old but does what I need it to do, I shoot it on the cropped in setting so it doesn’t have the fisheye look :)
@@timjamiesonphotosappreciate the response, mate and great photos btw. Looking forward to more content. Cheers
Enjoyed this vid. Apologies if I missed it… what focal length were you using.
I enjoyed hearing the thought process and then seeing the result.
Thanks! Fuji 35mm f2 :)
@@timjamiesonphotos I’m in a personal battle of 35mm vs 50mm ( the full frame equivalent). I am leaning toward the 35mm (ie23mm Fuji) because I think I prefer to capture more scene. I guess the fun is in trying things out 😉
It doesn’t seem to be the main thrust of your vids, and is arguably quite boring, but do you ever speak to the camera settings you use to get these fab shots?
Are you zone focusing or auto? Do you mainly work the exposure comp? Etc.
Hey man, yeah I might do a full video about settings at some point. But in this vid I’m shooting full manual and auto focus. Recently though I shoot pretty much always on manual focus unless it’s low light, I like being able to now have to think about the camera at all other then when to press the shutter :)
Very inspiring and interesting photo walk. What is the focal length you were using ? 50?
Thanks a lot! Yeah 35mm f2 lens (50mm full frame equivalent)
@@timjamiesonphotos thank you 👍🏻
Love the video but what camera were you using? The links don't seem to work.
Thank you! Fujifilm X-E4 and 35mm f2 in this video :)
Hey Tim, really love the way you compose your photos!. What camera were you using?
Hey! Thanks a lot 🙏🏻 in this video it’s a Fuji X-E4 :)
Hi Tim, just curious to know did you have to ask permission from those people you took photos of or is it ok to take pictures and use then because you are out in public place. It'll help me to know while I'm taking pictures. Thanks
Hey, no in the UK it’s perfectly legal to take photos of people in public without their permission, that’s the whole point of street photography!
Really like your style! How do you get this super straight POV footage? It’s always super levelled.
Thanks Franz! I use a chest mount (usually under a button up shirt) and GoPro 8 with the stabiliser setting on - most of the time it does s decent job :)
@@timjamiesonphotos thank you!
Hi Tim,
I’ve just picked up a Nikon D90 with a 50mm prime lens. Is this a good starter set up. Regards Peter. A beginner at 69 years old.
Sounds great to me! Happy shooting :)
Thankyou. I really enjoy your videos. Especially being new to photography.
Greetings from India. Loved the video very much.lots of opportunities of street photography in India. But cities are too much crowded. I love wide. 85mm for street will be a good POV? What do you suggest?
Hello there! Thanks for tuning in. Sure you can use 85mm for street photography if you want to get more tighter-in shots as well as candid portraits :)
TH-cam recommend me your video and I am soo soo thankful, really great stuff man.
btw,
I was wondering do you need an editor for editing your videos man?
Glad to hear it. All good in the editing front thank you 👍🏻
I think i could read your street photo styles with using reflection framing, colour contrast. Since I'm using smartphone and main lense is equivalent to 26mm, some of your tele shot cannot be applied to mine unless i risk the deterioration of picture quality
I often use a wide angle lens and still make photos that are abstract, use reflections and colour contrast :)
If you don't mind me asking, on a shot like the reflection shot at around 2:07, how much time do you spend post processing?
I don’t mind you asking at all! Probably spent about 5 minutes on that one. I try to keep it as short and minimal as possible, I spend the most amount of time tweaking colours :)
@@timjamiesonphotos cheers, just do black and white and save yourself 4 minutes ;) hope you aren't swapping colors to get red on red or something along those lines
@@timjamiesonphotos i say that and see the photo at 14:15. oh man, if you remove the sign/lights, it is so much quieter. the colors/walls really take over then.
Some good advice here, especially about shooting in different light. I noticed that all your photos seem to be at eye level and most had subjects walking away from you. They would be much better when facing forwards.
I shoot how I like to shoot and I like the shots how I’ve shot them 🙌🏻
As you’re working the scene, do you chimp to inform your decisions?
Hey, I try to avoid chomping as much as possible as you risk missing a shot or an opportunity when looking at the back of the camera :)
Are you using Fujifilm x100f?
X-E4 & 50mm f/2 lens
OK I'm a old school street photographer. I'm looking for the right street digital mirrowless camera. My thing is "Reflecting on Society and Self" What you say?
To be honest mate I’m not really a gear guy, I love Fuji but that might not be for everyone.
very nice bro👍 mode af-c ? af-s?
Thanks! AF-C but I tend to manual focus these days unless shooting in low light :)
hi, Which action camera?
GoPro Hero 8
@@timjamiesonphotos thankssss
Look like you upgrade your vision instead of your gear and it shows on your images.
Thanks so much! I do try to do that, but not sure it’s always the case 🤭
come to city in scotland , al shoot with you. what's your Instagram
Edinburgh is on my list!
@@timjamiesonphotos i did a shoot there today at the fringe and yesterday with a model you will get good stuff there 100%
Going to do my own photography in manny and came across this🫡🔥
Happy shooting mate! 📸
