    The virus has taken this mans job but he isn't sitting around waiting for a handout. Lot of folks are. Sounds like he is very resourceful and is working his butt off trying to make it. Going to be an interesting build. These are the people you don't mind helping because you know they really appreciate it.

    Last year my dad bought me a dumpster business that came with a 1997 international 4700 with a stellar shuttle hook lift and a few dumpsters. Turns out the truck was trashed so we bought a 2005 Kenworth T300. We did all the work swapping the hook lift over from the international to the KW ourselves. I learned a lot about trucks and hydraulics doing that, but the most important thing is the memories I’ll have doing that with my dad.

    Its nice that you are able to help someone down on there luck. Im a few days late watching. I know with my tractor i did an alternator conversion from scratch and my belt drives the water pump and now the alternator vs the generator. My bracket when building it i don't have a good way of bending 1/8 flat bar 1inch wide so i stair step welded it. Kept doing it till i got something that looked alright then welded it to base mounting bar. It has a slight twist like 5° and the pulley that came on the 60 amp 1 wire i downsized it by 1/4 to 1/2 inch range to get a high alternator shaft speed since i run mostly lower throttle plus i wasnt sure on belt travel speed already on my tractor vs what the alternator wants. I dont run tractor long hrs but its good after 2 yrs ruffly

    I built one years ago. You don't need much height if the bin rolls easily. I used my dump truck and put a bit of an angle on the front of the bin to get it lifted up. If you use a telescoping ram you get more power than a pair of straights and you don't need a pulley system. A used dump hoist would be fine. Also look at skip loaders. Very simple way to get a bin up on a truck without needing a hoist at all. Some heavy wall tubing, a few pins and bushings and a winch.

    Awesome fabrication on the brackets!!
    I really don't like how high that hydraulic pump is. Hydraulic pumps like head pressure, they will draw lift, but not dependably.
    This is why heavy equipment with high main pumps use charge pumps to supply the main pump with fluid under pressure.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i was concerned about that also. to make it work well and last, i am mounting the tank above the pump in the framework that will hold the tarp system. this will put it higher than the pump.

    Hello JC. You might already know this, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. I own a 1988 International S1700. It had manual steering and I converted it to power steering shortly after purchasing it. Right behind the alternator there is a plate on the back of the timing cover. If you remove the plate a gear driven hydraulic pump can be bolted up and run off the cam gear. I know that might not be ideal for this build since it constantly pumps when the engine is running, but I assume it could have other applications. Works great for the power steering. Also that valve that is on the crossmember above the rear axle, is that the tractor protection valve you referred to? My truck has one in the same place. Keep up the good work!

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, i am aware of the block off plate. i also have a crank driven pump that spins all the time but i thought the clutch pump would work out the best....who knows? i guess we will see if theory and reality are close huh?

  • @chrissterling3225
    @chrissterling3225 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello J.C. quick question...why mount the control valve to the rear ? Normally the outside controls are behind the cab on roll-offs and have in cab controls as well . Are you doing a traditional roll off with cylinders on both sides ? Does he have the rails with rollers already or are you fabricating that as well ?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      he needs to be able to control the winch and lift from the rear. he has to be at the rear to hook up tot the trailer dumpster. definitely not a typical set up but i think it should work.

    • @chrissterling3225
      @chrissterling3225 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@j.c.smithprojects i worked on them for 10 years..all dual axle tho..changed more than my share of winch cables lol . My only thought on the controls to the rear are..if he only has the controls in the rear..it's more dangerous than by the cab..if the can wasnt lined up with the rails properly should it slide off . If the rails are up all the way to lift the can on..your tail on the cable normally has 6 feet of slack to hook up..no real need for use of the controls . Again..it's just something to consider..it's your project my friend...look forward to seeing your finished project..tc

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the way i am thinking of doing the rails on the trailers should make it very safe. the controls will be just like running a rollback. out far enough away from the deck to be out of harms way yet still see what is going on. this is no different than any other new project....there is a difference in theory and reality. we will know exactly what works and what doesnt by the time we are done for sure!

    Another build where you build it the way you want it for your self only better. It will be one of those things where you you use old stuff you have on hand but go the extra mile when you have to buy something for it. You buy it yourself or wait until they can afford it. You usually buy it now and worry about compensation later. I do that more often than I can count. But I have a friend that I don't have to worry about getting a hack job by some hacker for less.

      i decided to put the tank above the pump height of the pump and in the stand for the electric tarp assembly. should have a good fall from that location.

  • @mikeduhm5325
    @mikeduhm5325 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I couldn't tell but you should have a check valve on the suction side of that pump. Preferably close to the tank. That's the problem with a pump higher than than the tank. Surplus center is a good source for components .

      @j.c.smithprojects  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      a good friend of mine is a hydraulic guru. he said the pump would be hard to prime. i thought of mounting the tank above the frame and higher than the pump would solve that issue. i am going to have an electric on a frame behind the bad. i was thinking of putting it in that framework.

    This looks like a cool project Im looking forward to watching this thru the entire build... Do you think that a F650 would be a good choice for a 14 ft. box truck with lift gate..? also at what point do you start getting a better motor than a power stroke in a Ford F series cab chass

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      in current model years it is f650 and larger that offer other engines outside the ford / international options. i dont see why it wouldnt work ok with a 14' box and a gate.

    Im working on a truck just like this one, good ol dt466 mechanical injection. I just need to find out what to use to seal the joints on the 3 piece exhaust manifold. The engine was rebuilt at some time in the past and the exhaust manifold used was rusty and ran loose for many miles, so the slip fit of the manifold sections is like a hot dog down a hallway:) I bought some exhaust system joint sealer in a tube, maybe high temp rtv? probably too hot for that rtv. anyone have experience?

    I always thought it was funny that on the DT and 9 liter trucks both IH decided they needed 4 9/16 V belts to run the water pump, but only 1 to run the air compressor. The 9 liter in my buddies s1954 single axle dump you’re always having to tighten the compressor belt up because that single belt starts to slip at about 105 psi when you’re running 2,000 rpm and above, which is 98% of the time on a 9 liter. Wish they’d at least put a double belt on them.

    If he wants to dump them on the cheap. Just make gin poles and a winch, that will lift the trailer straight up to dump it.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      another problem is the trailers themselves are in worse condition than this truck. taking them off the road and being hauled is a much safer option.
