As a machinist, I'll let you know that you can unscrew the tip on your dial indicator and buy a thinner longer tip. I have one on mine for rind and pinion settings up.
the problem you're talking about with your dial indicator is a well known problem for machinists and engineers called the cosine error. However, you can be 10 degrees off "dead on" straight and the measurement error will be 1.5% which is not that terrible if you're "just" measuring diff backlash. If you really want to be very precise about it you can calculate a compensation factor en correct for it. Personally for your application, I wouldn't bother.
Matt, ever since you and Tom Tom posted a video on 6/18/2023 about driving the Spud truck home , I've been anxiously waiting for this day when you get it running with the newly rebuilt supercharged engine. Congratulations for achieving this fun and fine stage of the project t! It's good to see Ed up snd around, supervising the repair of the front axle of the MORRvair.
Matt is right about the angle of the dial indicator introducing cosine error in the reading.........but its a tiny amount (with small angles) and infinitely more accurate than not measuring at all lol. He is hilarious, never change matt
True on the cosine error. But you have to worry too much until you get to 45+ degrees with a .707 to 1 error. In otherwords if your true limit is .010 you reading at 45 limit is .007
As much as I like the idea of the Morrvair getting a huge upgrade to the engine, I lean towards the idea of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". No, the Morrvair doesn't need morr power (right now), if anything, it just needs a couple morr winches. It is healthy and reliable currently, and already sounds like a performance vehicle. The Morrvair is probably the best all-rounder you have in the fleet. Save the engine upgrade for if/when the Morrvair is hurt and requires morr than superficial engine repairs. I’d argue Matt’s measuring device is dialed to the 11’s. He said 5 to 10 and got an 11. Within 10% of spec. That exceeds even Matt’s intentions.

Glad Rhett tucked his elbow in 😅
A really great video! The Spud-Truck smokes 4 tires at a time! And works really well. Matt's engineering at it's best. We are all really happy to see this. It's been a long hard road.....and that was just watching, I guess the edge of my seat is wearing -out !!! Thanks.
Lt is 100000% right morrrr powerrr babyy as your son james would say
LT the man, he knows his stuff.
So cool watching Matt and LT work together ! and that 6x6 sounds 🔥🔥!
You definitively need more power, it doesn't necessarily makes it undrivable, a friend had a supercharged '19 Mustang GT500 and it drives totally stock until he punch it and that thing puts down 900 hp at the wheels, dyno tested. An expert like LT doing that job will get you there with reliability
LT is 11mm more precise than TomTom.
An aluminum 6.0, a good set of heads and a cam is all the morvair needs. Supercharger adds so much complexity and heat that it just wouldn't soot the application.
MORR POWER! Supercharger tho, not a turbo for offroad, you want that low-down grunt.
Right now it has MORR power.... But it can def. use *MORE* Power !
