Very informative video of what you look at when evaluating a truck! Everyone evaluates a new purchase differently. I'm always open to another's way of doing something that could save me time and money! Thanks JC
Good info! I may look you up when I’m ready to buy. I want a heavy duty truck for full time rv towing in a few years. I like the other video with the 750’s with manual transmission’s. They would make an excellent tow vehicle.
Great presentation JC! You certainly have developed a sequence of things to check for and observe the obvious. Great camera work and nice commentary as always. Looks like a good candidate for your inventory! Work safe, stay warm. Doug@ the "ranch"
I didnt go through all the things i look at because the video would be over an hour long....a few repairs and some tires and who knows...it may find a new home!

Nice plug! Holy crapper! Wonder if that one was OE original, 190k? What a mess. Hopefully that didn't damage a valve on it's way around the cylinder. Great video, J.C. - covered all the bases. Looks like you got a great truck, too. 👍👍
In my area that truck would be worth one third of that asking price (2500 to 3000) in that condition. The main redeeming quality of that truck was the lack of rust.
I have an 02' F250 Super Crew Lariat. V-10 auto with 120K on it with the original just about everything. INCLUDING PLUGS!!! This has been the best and most comfortable truck I've ever owned.. I am afraid to change the plugs myself due to the aluminum head/original crap design plugs issues. I'm a handicapped Vet with a fused back and I cannot afford to have to pull one or both heads for repair. Just wondering if you have a good trick to pull these plugs without snapping off the end?? Maybe do a video of this sometime!!
Good info. I have gotten to like the V10 engines...they seem to be powerful and dependable if they haven’t been abused. Hope this truck worked out well for you.🤩 It’s wasn’t a 10k truck...then.
Hey, came across this today, figured you may be able to help with a question. I am thinking about building a tow rig, I want to shorten the frame on a 2007 F550 4x4 6.0L diesel so I can make it more driveable around town and still be able to pull a lot of weight, likely 20,000+lbs. And I want to do this for cheap, hence the older year. The truck is already bulletproofed and has had regular maintenance on it. I believe it would be fairly easy but let me know if you know of any issues that may come up. Thanks
The freme on your truck doesnt lend itself well to moving the axle forward. there is a change in height just past the front leaf spring hanger. the f550 has a double frame that you will have to cut down. the rear fuel tank can be an issue. parking brake "intermediate" cable will have to be changed. i dont change the frame length on those little trucks very often. its not been costy effective.
@@j.c.smithprojects Hmm, is it difficult then to just cut out a 1-2 foot section in the middle of the frame just behind the cab? Then the entire rear set up moves forward, shorten necessary lines and use a shorter drive axle. These are just my thoughts. I don't actually have the truck yet, just looking at ideas...
it can been done but it is not the preferred method. i dont cut and weld unless there is no other way. if you do cut and weld, consider the method of cut you want to do (angle cut, z cut, straight cut), type of weld and also adding an inside the frame liner that extends long before and after the weld joint. disclaimer: i dont advise anyone to do this. they should seek a trained professional with the proper certifications.
v10 bad about headgasket blowing, probably coolant leaking in combustion chamber, fowling plug, and causing a miss. replaced headgasket s on one of these ,in frame, wished id pulled the engine, instead of doing it in the engine bay ,passenger head ,with the AC stuff in the way is,apain to remove .. broken plug, just like the 5.4 litre v8, not many threads in the head,hela-coil .
Jeremiah Bradley i agree, the 6.0 cost 2,000 $ for 2 injectors, that was my cost ,owner paid alot more, and the 6.4 ,i cant see any reason why anyone would buy one of them, its the worst diesel ever produced ,its worse than gm s gasoline conversion diesels in the 70s ,i agree, had used,a couple v10s that were pretty good, one was,in,a,E450 church bus, it was actually quite impressive, compared to the previous ones I'd driven, i think gearing helps ,4.10 and lower ,helps them alittle.
Great video man. And good information on purchasing a truck. I know you sell beds and part from you trucks you buy and sell. So I was wondering if you sell any 4x4 axle out of a 3/4 or 1 ton ford truck? I am looking for front and rear axles with a 3.73 ratio in them. Thanks for your time.
I don't know if you ever had to work for a fleet outfit that gives you a number and time card but it is humiliating for me but when you need to feed the family, you do what you have to. It hurt so bad to be a number, no Hey Morg, I see you pulled another hundred plus hours week!! And they are happy that you did and was willing to put it in your check plus maybe hows the kids doing stuff. I don't expect them to love me but just a number.... forget it! I started my own outfit working under a tarp before I got a shop built and I wasn't in a hurry when I got a roof over my head, I just wanted to own it instead of making the bank money. It took three long hard working years to put up the first half but creature comforts are nice and the tool box looks better without having drain holes in the boxes. I made real good till I had a fatal mistake cost me everything I had. I payed insurance on everyone but me cause they punish you for being a sole owner. I caught a man who fell over ten feet... probably closer to fifteen feet and broke my back, broke my neck and tore his shirt pocket when I caught him. He was old at the time and I knew that he would die if I didn't... next time I holler "Olay" and let them scrape up the pieces. Great video... now I remember where I was going... your experience is what made you owner operator!!
You said that it isn't a $10K truck...curious to know what you think it is worth and if you were able to buy it for that. I ask because I've seen trucks that weren't worth the asking price (like this one) but the sellers refused to budge...
looks like another one for someone else's fleet. i could use the motor and trans for another truck and sell someone a good newer ford to put a cummins in. NO MORE LIFTGATES!!
That's rather where a bit of experience with those vehicles comes in so you can tell whether that issue has hurt the engine or not. In this case I'd say JC is pretty confident that it hasn't or he'd be looking at engine work or replacement, but he's not yet so it could be alright. Big engines like this V10 have big valves so a broken spark plug tip can be pushed right out of the exhaust valve, which is something you generally won't get on a car engine...
the remains of the spark plug likely made it out through the exhaust. i removed the plug and did a compression test and a cylinder leak down to check for any cylinder damage. it checks out good. i replaced the plug and it runs great.
some f600 and f700 still had a traditional fenders and hood with the option of a full tilt forward hood. newer models f650 and larger all come with tilt hoods.
i checked compression and leak down when i pulled the bad spark plug out. had it got stuck or damaged the piston or valve....it would have showed up in these tests and it would still have a miss. it runs perfectly smooth now.
it will vary in value from person to person and depending on what part of the country you are in. here where i am, many farmers like the gas f450 /f550 trucks with a longer cab to axle measurement. many dont want to spend the extra money for a diesel engine to only use it a hand full of times a year.
