What Happens if a DJI Controller Dies Mid-Flight?

  • In this video I test multiple scenarios of what would happens if your phone ever drops connection with your drone's WiFi, or your controller shuts off mid flight. What could possibly go wrong?
    SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN ASKED MULTIPLE TIMES:
    Q: Why did the drone just land when it was closer to you but then RTH when it was further?
    A: As I had not known this when making this video (and found out through commenters later), whenever the drone is within 66ft (20m)...it will just land where it is currently hovering at. However, if the drone is further from the controller than 66ft (20m), the drone WILL RTH back to the set home point. Hope this clears things up for people.

      Thank you so much!! Also- if you are just starting out and getting your first drone...it will definitely get you started out and it's a great first drone! However, if you have the money I would definitely recommend going up to a newer phantom model such as the DJI Mavic (due to its portability and ease of use also). Either way, pretty much any DJI drone higher than the standard will suffice and you should be happy with any choice you make!! Hope this helps you in some way:)

    • @carsonmtech
      @carsonmtech  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Louis! Also, no, the propellers wont shut off when pulling the left stick all the way WHEN IN THE SKY. However, when you HIT THE GROUND and pull the left stick down all the way, the propellers WILL shut off, which that is how you manually land any DJI drone:). Hope this helps!

    hi carson great vid
    1 question while in flight say the drone is really low on battery half a mile away will it force a return to home conserving just enough power to get to you or does the battery die in flight without attempting to come home?

    • @carsonmtech
      @carsonmtech  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can change in settings at what battery % the drone returns to home at and it will automatically return to home when the drone is at that set battery percentage. Though, it won't return to home in accordance to how far the drone is from home and how long it thinks it will take to get home...that's up to you, the flyer!!

    Carson, I would like to hear your thoughts on what my phantom 3 did..... I lost connection at 1600' when I turned it for a view of the ocean. It quickly gave me a unable to return home on the screen. I did chase it and get a few seconds of control but to no avail it would not return home. My questions is this..... I have the last place it was on my tablet but it was 1600' high when this happened, would it have landed when I lost connection or continued on its 3-5 mph drift after it did so. It was a clear malfunction and DJI blames the "wind" they say it blew it away and that it couldn't descend because the wind also blew it up, a complete line of BS. Anyway I am trying to locate it and even purchased another to search for it although this time the SE for more range.
    What do you think, I have doubled the distance from where it was last located (at 60%) gives me then the descend for landing. The path was straight as an arrow before I completely lost contact..... Thoughts???

    Hi Carson, I have just bought a P3 Standard and hooked onto WiFi and the app connected, but when I picked it up and moved it to take off from another position, it lost GPS connection, I took it back to the first position and it reconnected to the GPS signal again, I moved it several times, and it kept disconnecting, any Ideas, oh, and thought to say what a great channel you have, cheers.

    Nice video ! but i have a question : Do we need to set the home point every time we start a fly or it set himself ?

    • @carsonmtech
      @carsonmtech  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm planning on making a video sometime soon testing the accuracy of the home point/RTH and this would be a great thing to add to that video...but to answer your question currently, yes it does set the home point automatically. As in: every single time you take off, the drone sets the home point automatically and in fact if your phone volume is up...the app tells you by saying, "The home point was updated. Please check it on the map"

    • @GIJew
      @GIJew 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You probably set your RTH altitude to something really high. When the failsafe kicks in, it will ascend the drone to the RTH altitude that you define in the settings. It's meant so that once you lose connection, it will immediately start flying up, THEN come back to the home point and descend so it doesn't hit any trees on the way back. 90 meters (~300 feet) is recommended for the RTH altitude, in my experience. However, if you're in a mountain range, or places where there are extremely tall buildings, it may be a safer idea to set it to 300-500(max) meters. Even though you will technically be breaking the law for a couple minutes, you will probably get your bird back in one piece.

      Yep you can simply initiate the drone to RTH from just the controller by flipping the left hand switch on the controller (S2) up and then down once and it will begin returning to home.

  • @thman2181
    @thman2181 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    when the return to home activates and you're out from your starting point does the drone have a set altitude or can you set a set altitude to have it return to home in case you have varying obstacles?

    • @carsonmtech
      @carsonmtech  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has a set altitude that you can adjust in settings by going and clicking on the three little dots in the top right-hand corner, then click on the top tab that looks like a mini drone, scroll down and you'll find a box with a set altitude in meters labeled "Return-to-home Altitude." I have my RTH altitude set to 50m which is plenty enough to clear all trees and power lines where I live but may differ depending on where you're flying. Hope this can help you out:)...Also I would suggest checking out my video called "HOW TO FLY A QUADCOPTER/DRONE FOR BEGINNERS" where I give some other tips and tricks that you may not have known of.

    Good video which takes me to my question. Have you ever flown it completely without your iPhone or any device? The reason why I ask is because I go flying with a mate who has the DJI phantom 2 or the one previous to the 3 standard. Once we find a nice spot there is always an issue with my phantom 3 standard such as: batteries cold, magnetic field,no signal not enough satellites ecc. He just puts the batteries and off he goes flying WITHOUT any problems! So needles to say it becomes a bloody nuisance! I would rather fly it without my iPhone but don't know how. Help!!!

    Carson miller: I bought my dji 3 standard yesterday I charged the batteries on both drone & controler, updated firmware all went really smooth, i think by the time i had updated everything had a play on the simulator the battery level was down to 84%. The weather here in the uk is really wet so dont think i will get to get my first flight for a few days, Would i have to discharge my battery for the drone and recharge before my first flight. By the way i find your videos very helpful great work & thank-you.

    • @carsonmtech
      @carsonmtech  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much! Also, to answer your question of discharging the battery before your first flight...I don't believe you need to do that but I would highly suggest charging the battery back up full to 100% because the flight time will seem very short when you are actually flying! (only around 20 minutes) Have fun flying!!

      I'm not sure :/ It shouldn't make that much of a difference it will probably still be around 20 minutes which is what I get typically

    You have setup the RC Signal lost to landing. There are three options in dji go app. RTH, Landing and Hover.

    Subscribed & a nice Video. I have a Phantom 3 SE that flys for a minute and falls to the ground after the motors stops suddenly. Camera was damaged a while ago so i removed it and the gimble is stil connected to the drone properly secured and wired. Is there a fix for this or is this a common problem or is it because the the camera is detached. Any help from anyone would be fantastic.

  • @ldanley72

    You actually don't need your phone after it connects... Also don't be fooled about it returning to home. If you go below the level you first set your home point (like if you was on a mountain and travel lower than it's home position) it will sit your craft in the middle of nowhere. or if you are walking along with it and change the battery, remember where you changed that battery, because it will update at that very point and you will make it all the way home and the battery will die and it will leave you and you will be exhaustively chasing it down the road. Yeah, I'm glad I had on some good running shoes..

    • @carsonmtech
      @carsonmtech  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      xD the home point updates every time you take off with your drone as long as you have your phone connected. The DJI Go app makes sure to let you know that haha

    Make sure before you fly to let the drone register to home location because my drone got disconnected from the controller and it crashed near by i found it by luck and it took just a little damage but the battery was completely broken but still on

    what does drone do in low battery condition. I know it probably gives visual warning . Say you went to can for 5 mintues, and baterry started to get critically low , does it return on own or????

    • @carsonmtech
      @carsonmtech  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can set the % at which your drone returns to home in settings but I believe the default is at 15% the app notifies you the battery is getting low and then at 10% it returns to home and auto-lands but this can of of course be changed give or take in the settings.

    • @nazshami7101
      @nazshami7101 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, at 10%, (No less), it auto lands. You can then only correct the area of touchdown.

      How your video footage and sound is excellent? I am working hard mine one to be better, even not close to you. What type of camera you did use in this video as well as external mic?

    • @carsonmtech
      @carsonmtech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this video, I only used an iPhone 7+ shooting in 4K and the audio is from the iPhone 7 as well. This video is a great example of just showing that you don't need incredibly fancy equipment to make successful videos :).

      Are you using Android? Many commenters have commented on other videos of mine saying that the Android version of the DJI Go app isn't as supported as the DJI Go app on Apple devices:/. Also, it could depend on the WiFi chip in your phone and how old the phone is.
