    Nice summary Tom. Phantom 4 has a lot of capabilities and automated systems. I think you have already prevented more than one "oops" for my new P4 . . . Thanks for the heads up on those new auto-behaviors. Use more of the flight video crashes with explanations about what led to them . . VERY useful.

    I've never owned a drone before. But, when I do, I won't be concerned about being able to fly up to 3 miles away. I believe in keeping visual contact with my drone while I fly it. As you point out, if you can't see your drone you could easily fly it into an object and crash the drone.
    Excellent video. I hope to get my hands on a Phantom 4 one day soon. :)

    The double down and in CSC command does not disable the Phantom 4 mid-air. The new way to disable mid-air (emergencies only) is full down&right on the left stick plus holding the Return to Home. This way an accidental CSC is way less more likely. Thanks for the videos though Tom

    I just bought my first drone. P3 standard, had for a little while now and I've been reading the instructions and watching tutorials, including yours. I do have one question. If by chance someone does accidentally initiate a shut down in midair can you start it back up to try and save it if you have enough altitude or is it bye bye drone.

    Thanks Tom. Very helpful. That tip about return to home, then taking manual control and landing.....then it taking off again.....Is Gold! I have a tip that I experienced this week...unfortunately.... (New user) Hot day I was flying at the oval, the previous day got sunburnt from flying from the cricket pitch. So next day flew from the shade of the trees...and thought i'd try the return to home function. I'd set the point of return to me, rather than where it took off (not thinking).... so here was my big chance to try RTH fumction. The Drone rose to 20m.... came over to me........(in the shade of the Gum tree) then proceeded to land. I could see what was happening but panicked trying to get my bearings and crashed it. There doesn't seem to be any damage. I do love your videos, keep thwm coming and Thanks!

    My P4 was flying perfectly since I got it and just today I took it out to get some more footage I noticed the gimbal had a delay reaction in moving the camera up and down. Now I know there are settings to make it slower for a more cinematic effect and I have already done that, but my concern is that the delay was I was able to fly without even looking at my phantom and just see it in FPV. No changes have been made in the past 2 days. (example) I can wave my hand in front of the camera and 5-6 seconds later it'll show on my screen. I have updated firmware, calibrated IMU, controller, gimbal, the works and nothing helps..My concern is that it wasn't this slow before or even slow at all. It was actually pretty good (less than 1 second delay) Whats wrong?!??? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    I had something strange happen Easter afternoon, my Phantom 3 went crazy kind of. I started to lift off when it suddenly raised to about 30 feet and then headed South at full speed and in a slight clime. I watched it fly out of sight at full speed as I frantically tried to regain control. At that point I thought I would never see it again as I feared it would lose signal and not track its location on the map. Then just as I was sure I would never see my drone again I heard it off in the distance. I then got eye contact, it was a little over a 1/4 mile East of me and flying straight North. The controls had no effect still, but I could see it was loosing altitude and I watched as it sunk into the forest and then heard a very loud BANG as it hit a tree. I thought for sure that it was in a dozen or so little pieces. But when I finally found it only the props seemed to be damaged, thank goodness!
    Now here is where it gets weird, a friend of my son has a Phantom 3 also, I bought mine after seeing his, and he told the same story to my son, he had the same thing happen to him on Easter afternoon. And as close as we can tell they happened at exactly the same time, we live 3 miles apart. is flew South, out of site, then reappeared East of him heading North, only to crash just like mine. He was lucky as he had a hay field East of him, no trees.
    Has anyone ever heard of or experienced anything like this? Did we both get some kind of radio interference or something? I am kinda scared to fly my Phantom 3 again, it is a Professional and I have well over $1100 invested.

      There was one "line" (a few hundred) Phantom 3-drones (advanced and standard) that were sold with a "mistake" in programming, leading to them thinking they were ordered to "return to home", and using wrong coordinates for that.

    Hey Tom...love your channel! I appreciate all the helpful information. I have a question about the Phantom 4...is there a way to maintain an altitude on uneven terrain? In other words, let's say I want to film a golf course at low altitude and the terrain changes. Is there a way to maintain say 5 feet and if there is a hill, the Phantom 4 will simply raise up to maintain the 5 feet as the quad-copter goes over the hill. Does that make sense?

    I don't understand how the propellers would fly off during flight. They are threaded in the opposite direction of the spin. Even if you just set the propellers on the motors without screwing them, they will self-tighten when you start the Phantom. In what sort of situation would it be possible to lose a propeller during flight?

    Great video, I have never had a crash in air. My weakness is trying to turn the unit off when the drone has landed..... That is, the drone landed safely and now I push both joy sticks down and out. sometimes the drone skips off sideways...... what Am I doing wrong. also, what are buttons for on the bottom of the controller? one pitches the camera straight down ( I think that is the left button). Not sure what the right button does?Did my first flight over water and ocean. Everyone was so impressed with the picture quality and no vibration in the videos.

    I'd add one thing in regard to cancelling the return to home automatic feature. Be sure to confirm it! I complete totaled a p3-pro after it automatically when in RTH mode. Battery warning came on and I was warned RTH was going to activate. I hit cancel and started bringing my drone home. Just inches from my hand, the drone took off straight up and would not respond to elevation controls. Thing hit branches 30ft above and fell to the ground. Broke into several pieces. Looked down at my controlled after the crash and say the "Are you sure you want to cancel return to home?" message. I was pissed. Got it replaced free under warranty. Manual clearly states you can control elevation on RTH. That wasn't the case for me. Maybe fixed now? June 2015.

    Thinking of buying the Phantom 3 Standard for use for work. I'm in the telecom industry and will use this to survey telecom towers. Will this be problem for the Phantom because of the presence of RF signals?

    • @REDxFROG
      @REDxFROG 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      RSGification that, you will have to try out yourself. you may have to deal with weak signals and/or video stream loss. but it could only happen in peaks.
      what you really would want to avoid is getting too close to metal. its messing up the compass. and if you fly next to walls and metal you could loose gps and the compass which usually results in crashes if you dont 100% control it yourself at all times. a glitched compass makes it rotate around which is hard to control.
      drones like to be used at distance. and phantom 3 standard would not be the right choice sind the camera isnt good enough to inspect stuff.

    I really wish DJI would include VRS (Vortex Ring State) mentions in the warning list. If you're descending straight-down at full available descent speed and you are super unlucky, you can get the craft caught in its own turbulence - which causes an uncontrolled extreme vertical drop (the props spin and push air, but the air isn't pushing back enough and the lift is compromised). The motors will go to full speed to try to slow the fall, but it will still come straight down HARD with no control. The solution, apparently, is to apply some right-stick to move laterally out of the turbulence.
    VRS cost us a full replacement camera+gimbal assembly on our P2V+, and both landing skids. Plus a massive dent in our confidence. (Good video to watch on the subject: "quadcopter wobble of death" by Quadcopter 101)

  • @TropTrevTv

    this is great the only thing i dont see is why they would let you be able to turn it off while flying. I mean its so simple to just hit the buttons in that way by accident. Reminds me of a pushbutton start car, if it let you cut it off while driving.

    Question: I am trying to decide between the Phantom 3 4K and Advanced. I don't need 4K because most of the time I will be recording in 1080p 60p and then slowing it down. So, do you think that the 5km range on the advanced is necessary or do you think most people don't use more than 1km? Thanks! :)

    • @Adriano_leal
      @Adriano_leal 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go for the advanced, the 4k still uses the old wifi signal for the camera (the adv uses the much better and more stable lightbridge), does not support glonass and the bitrate is pretty low for a 4k image (the same case with the P3 professional) . I just got my P3 Advanced 3 days ago and noticed that even the 2.7 k has a pretty low bitrate. 1080p 60fps is the way to go

    Hello Tom. There is a problem when flying near buildings: the Venturi effect. The airstream generated between the building and the drone makes this to be sucked into the building, with the risk of collision. Recommendation: Do not fly the drone so close to any construction. Greetings.

      Depends on where you live/what kind of usage you have.
      Some insurances cover certain drones/activities as part of your normal insurance.

    May be better to fly to windward first to test wind strength.
    (grammar assistance) 'only' and 'already' are not used for emphasis as in German ie 'nur' und 'schon'.

    Good advice. I have a problem. I am relatively new to the P3 so suffice it to say I have had my fair share of crashes. When I do crash I have a hard time shutting down the drone. Using both paddles it still won't shut down but rather spins around the ground and causes more damage. I was told that the drone doesn't know its on the ground so it still tries to fly, again, causing more damage. I would have loved to have a special "kill switch" that I could use to immediately shut down. Does anyone have this issue and can you help?

      +Michael Goldman: Good question for the P3. I know on the P4 when I manually land it, it knows via the bottom sensors it is on the ground (does some warning beeps) but still have to manually kill the motors. RTH when lands shuts off automatically.

      +dzonikg Sorry but it doesn't answer my question or problem. If the drone crashes and is not upright it still thinks it is flying and pulling the sticks down does not shut it down.

    Tom. You might want to not say that the props "screw on tightly" because they don't. It's just a push against the retaining springs and a slight twist to engage. Good video though.

    people seem to forget about pulling the left stick all the way down about 2 sec to the stopping point will also kill the motors

    If you find yourself fighting to get back home against a headwind and the battery life is looking like it will be getting low before getting back, your best chance is to go as fast as your Phantom can fly. Yes, this causes the battery percentage to drop faster over time but speed is your best friend when trying to make as efficient of progress as possible when going against a headwind. Trying to baby the Phantom back home by trying to use less horizontal speed and slower battery drain will cause you to make less efficient progress back home and your chances of making it become less. Example: If you only fly 15 miles per hour (airspeed) against a 15 mile per hour headwind, then your speed back home will be 0 miles per hour. If you go maximum speed at 25 miles per hour airspeed, then you will at least be making some progress at 10 miles per hour back home. Nice thing is the Phantom 4 can go 45 miles per hour which results in a groundspeed back home of 30 miles per hour in this example. In a nutshell, GO FAST to get back home when things are getting tight against a headwind.
