Great video!!! I had a McCulloch chain saw for years and it just stopped running, tried everything I could think of to no avail. I bought a new saw about 5 yrs ago and now that one wasn't running very good. I used your video to tune it up and it's running awesome!! I went back to my old saw and tuned it up and it's running like new !!!! I also have a gas hedge trimmer that wouldn't run and now it's running like new !!!! This video literally just saved me about $1000 !!! Well done!!

Hands down the best video for getting a chainsaw back to spec for fuel adjustment. My Husq 460 Rancher was in need of serious maintenance. Changed out the air filter, spark plug, new chain, set the bar and chain tension and other lube requirements. THEN I came across this video. I had the right tools already but just couldn't get it to run good. I followed these guidelines in front of my PC, then set the saw down. Took it out in the morning and it started right up! THANKS! I'm an auto technician, but I don't work on two-strokes very often. Your video is one of the best ones I've seen yet, and yet it contains 1000 less words than some other videos. You got right to the point, and clearly described the process. I bought my first saw, a Husqvarna 350 from Lowes 25 years ago+/-. 15 years ago It wouldn't run, so I took it to the local Husqvarna dealer. He said you bought it at Lowe's, take it to Lowe's, A$$-hoe! So I took it to a shop that kept it for two weeks and charged me $50 to adjust it. OK, OK, I was a little slow in finding this BRILLIANT explanation of how to tune a two stroke engine. Since watching this video (Many Times to make sure, I had your direction correct), I have SUCCESSFULLY got my problematic saw to start, idle, purr, jump into action and power through the job at hand....... Thank you so much for this in-depth explanation and your time in producing such a wonderful video...... 10/10 and Subscribed........ Tony from Tasmania, Australia. Cheers mate !
I cleaned/service my carb last year. Don't think I set the L, H & Idle correctly (445 model). When idling the saw is running VERY high RPM. Pulling throttle trigger saw bogs down and will die. I'll re-evaluate my L, H & Idle tomorrow. You video will help greatly. Thanks for providing a good video.
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. My love/hate relationship with my chainsaw and other 2 cycle tools has been completely healed after watching your straight forward video. One bonus for me was watching you use the bench vice to hold the saw. (Duh!j just never thought of doing this ha ha...If tightened way down this is so helpful keeping the saw from moving while making the adjustments. Again really nice work I really appreciate it!
This is a good primer for adjusting the fuel/air mixture and idle speed on an otherwise healthy 2-stroke engine. If you don't get the response described, there could be other issues that need to be addressed; fuel/oil mixture, spark plug/ignition system, dirty carb/ air filter, or damaged cylinder, piston and/or rings.
Running saws most of my adult life, keep them clean, chains sharp, and generally take care of them. Never knew how to adjust high, low and idle speeds, was always afraid to try, having said that, I now have an vague idea. I will watch this clip repeatedly until I get it and fully understand what you are saying. Thanks, David Pallin, from Northeastern Minnesota.
I want to thank you for your video. It helped me a lot. I don't live where I have competent chainsaw technicians, so I appreciate that you took the time to share your knowledge.
That is cool, I have well over 200 Planes half are still in kits. Been flying and designing planes since 5 year years old, now flying with Gasoline engines 30cc to 170cc engines. They go from 15cc to 420cc and bigger. Have been also tuning these and Nitro engine since then. Tuning them all are the same as the chainsaw of course. Your doing a good job showing this for people who either want to learn and some who cannot afford a mechanic, it is great man keep it up.
Great tuning video. The three things I've found that make it impossible to tune a saw is stopped up fuel filter or air filter and blown or hardened diaphragm.
2-stroke is wonderful beats and chords in my ears and it's wonderful to see/hear power and 2-stroke music made in Huskvarna in sweden around the world. 💪🎶🇸🇪❤
I've got a stihl O45 AVE that is over 40 year old was my dads now mine cut a minimum of 15 cords of wood ever year. And because its been taken care of its still running strong.
I made a adjustment tool out of a bic pen. Just take out the ball point and ink tube. Then just push it on a screw and it will mold to the shape with splines and everything. 💯❗️
I have run chainsaws for years, I can change the fuel filter plugs air filter but never adjusted them. I have a brand spanking new husky and it will not stay running "idle screw " was set way to low. Thanks for the video. I just adjusted it and it idles great now 😂
Thank you for the GREAT video and educating me!!! Being an older guy who loves camping I found it easier, less stress and with less energy to use a bow saw rather than to start my chain saw... My question is, How does the saw lose it's factory settings? Also, what's the "rule of thumb" for mixing oil to fuel?
Um... there's a lot here so as the saw ages/breaks in and is in different environments weather etc. The setting could & probably should be fiddled with a little... as far as oil mixtures go for the cheaper Chinese saws I run 25:1 I also recommend a higher dollar oil not some cheap crap... on every other saw a 40:1 or 50:1 depending on the saw works well... we run red armor oil it's an echo brand and is great! Oil and maintenance is a whole lot cheaper than replacing parts or an entire saw! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
Just found your channel and subscribed. You have a real knack for clearly sharing and explaining the "tricks." The tricks are what make the difference between getting the job done and just fumbling around. Many thanks.
Thanks for the tips, I have two Huskavarna chainsaws, never had any problem with them whatsoever, I own a sawmill business, so I use them regularly, had a 288 Xp till a 48” wide tree fell on it, in the winter and the ground was frozen, let’s say I got to see what’s inside a chainsaw without taking it a part, then I bought 2 more, one 357xp, the other 385xp they are several years old and going strong, thanks again for sharing your wisdom
Thank you for this video. My old Craftsman chainsaw never ran very well, and after replacing the fuel lines a plastic part on the carburetor broke and I had to replace the carburetor. After watching your video I was able to tune the new carb, and now the saw runs better than it ever has.
Did this is the best video and I've watched a lot of how to videos this is by far the most informative and you didn't talk to me like you were my freaking dad scolding me perfect you should be a teacher!!

Thanks from Puerto Rico. You show me how finally set the tune of my Echo CS 400. I had a hard time try to ckean and tune the carb. Finally today I think is set.
Excellent. Thank you. We spend good money on these tools and taking care of them is not only wise, but fun and personally rewarding. I live on a mountain and have only 1 pain in the ____ to start chainsaw, a Stihl MS 311. Your video may help!
Absolutely this is a basic over view 👌🏻 once you learn the basic concept of a 2 stroke it will carry over to the next! Thanks for watching don't forget to subscribe and Keep on Piddling! #americanpiddler
Thanks a lot for the tuning instruction. My Husqvarna doesn't want to start warm soon after the factory. At present, it has a rich fuel mixture, gives gaps during gassing, loss of power, and smoke exhaust.
A coat hanger and a falling ax or regular Ax. Put the coat hanger on the stump chop about 4"peace out of the coat hanger with the axe on a rock or piece of metal wedge flatten one end of the coat hanger like a screwdriver and on the other end put the little Bend in it about a half inch from the end so you know witch way the flat part of the tool is. Much better than the ones you buy you should get all the tools you need when you buy the saw. To remove the guards that they have in their just heat that tool up so its hot with a lighter torch stick it in there to let it melt onto the tool. It's hard to blow these little rinky-dink saws up. Just make it so it runs good. When you saw starts to run out of gas or fuel turn it off don't try to keep it running that's when the most damage will happen. Keeping your saw sharp is and most important thing once you run a dull chain you can never sharpen it again properly if you keep it sharp from the beginning that it will stay sharp through his whole entire life but if you run it doll it will never ever cut right again it doesn't make any difference who sharpens it. Last tip of the day your change speed if you chain going really fast and you touch one Little rock or anything your whole entire chain will be wiped out. Slow your chain speed down learn to jog your chain 10x the life
What a great video buddy. Outstanding job. My husqvarna has been choking out a bit and this really helped me understand how to methodically tune instead of just turning screws what feels like completely random
Thanks man!!! My wife bought a poulan wild thing for $1 at a garage sale. seriously..! spent $6 on new fuel lines and other carb parts (paid too much) but listening to your vid got it running like new.. I don't even think it has 10hrs on this thing.. maybe 5 tops.. thanks brother!!!
Excellent video AP! I only watched it like 12 times lol! What would the correct RPM be at highest rev? 9000? Idle is 2700 RPM? (Going off specs from Husqvarna's website). I replaced carb, fuel lines, plug, etc., but mine is still bogging down. I do have the 21 spline tool btw.
Appreciate your time my man, just got meself the 545 Husqvarna...I just realized that this thing has auto tune...was trying to do some adjustments because I'm in the mountains, guess not lol
That saw likely has a limited coil. Thus it should be tuned in the wood. Hitting the limiter sounds like 4 cycling. Older saws with unlimited coil you can set by ear, limited coil under load in the wood.
Great information. I am restoring an 15 year old homelite that hasn't run in few years. Noticed it won't start in winter cold time. Adjusting the carb makes big difference. Noticed when I pull the trigger it hesitates and wants to die. Didn't know the "L" is for response .
Happy to have helped! Yep the "L" controls the low end and the H set the high end and the other sets the idle! Sure appreciate you stopping by, hope ya subscribed. Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
best video have watched in awhile. know what you are doing and showed us how to do it . I have one question though. Followed your link for the adjusting tools and they are saying that walbro carbs might require a 22 splined tool. will the 21 work? haven;t found a 22 on amazon. thanks
I am not sure... I bought the two that I share links to and the one works for my Stihl and the other for my Husqvarna thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling!
Great video sir. One thing you didn’t mention was that the air filter must be cleaned or replaced with a new one before any adjustments are done to the carb.
Great video! My only problem was I couldn’t really tell which way you were turning the screwdriver. Still the best video out there for tune up. Thanks!
You turn it in "clockwise" to lean it & turn it out "counter clockwise" to richen it up! Thanks for watching don't forget to subscribe and Keep on Piddling! #americanpiddler
lxmzhg I agree with you on by passing the dealer. Or a mower shop. Where I live, I took a weed eater in to have tuned up. It sat at the mower shop for over a month. I got fed up with waiting longer than a reasonable amount a time.Long story short it hadnt been touched. Matter of fact they couldnt find the weedeater . Then the owner goes Im just going to have to work on those machines from the small town I live near. I was pretty irratated at his response for just about losing the weed eater. So when I can bypass those types of shops, the better
Great video but you forgot one thing, and I think you will agree. Before making adjustment you should clean your air filter, or you could end up being too lean if you clean it after.
Thanks for the vid, it really helped me understand. For whatever reason I kept thinking when you turned 1 you had to turn the other. Now it's a lot more clear. I'll go give it a try.
I have a Jonesered version of that same saw and your sounds great but I am tuning on a 80cc pre emissions Maccullough and it just sounds plain mean no matter how I set the jets. Thanks for your time
I have a customers same saw here. Winding the idle screw all the way in is ridiculous. The hi and low on my one needs 2.5 turns out on both. It's import to peak the hi, and counter clockwise quarter until it starts to "4 stroke". When new, yes 1.5, but over time the rubber diaphragm pulsating in the carb bringing fuel up .. stretches .. causing less fuel pressure ... thus on older saws you need to open at least the HIGH to compensate with a bit more fuel. 2.5 turns out is a sign it's very due for a carby kit. 1.5 is NOT the be all, end all for all engines.

Tony love this! Very cool proud to help an Aussie! Thanks for watching & Keep on Piddling!
a trick I use, a paint mark on my adjusting tool makes it easy to keep track of the turns, great video thanks
That's a great idea! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
Glad it helped! Should have another 2 stroke episode very soon make sure you subscribe! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
By far the clearest video on how to tune a saw. Thankyou
I just got my first chainsaw and this was an extremely helpful video. Thanks!!

First rate info, just retuned my Oleo Mac 400, after watching your video. Clear & concise. As you say over the pond Great Job and thanks again
This is a good primer for adjusting the fuel/air mixture and idle speed on an otherwise healthy 2-stroke engine. If you don't get the response described, there could be other issues that need to be addressed; fuel/oil mixture, spark plug/ignition system, dirty carb/ air filter, or damaged cylinder, piston and/or rings.
you are adjusting idle speed counter clock wise and saying you are backing it off?

That is awesome. That is quite the collection!
🤔 After watching numerous vids on adjusting 2 stroke carbs, yours for some reason seemed much easier to follow. Ty for the share. 😀
Great tuning video. The three things I've found that make it impossible to tune a saw is stopped up fuel filter or air filter and blown or hardened diaphragm.
Great info James! Thanks for sharing! Thanks for watching & keep on piddling #americanpiddler
2-stroke is wonderful beats and chords in my ears and it's wonderful to see/hear power and 2-stroke music made in Huskvarna in sweden around the world. 💪🎶🇸🇪❤

I bought the adjustment tools and played around with my piece of crap saw...got it working pretty well! Thanks!!
Where and what the name of the tool
@@derricksmiley8293 Husqvarna 345 16inch blade. North east PA. Approximately 10 years old.
I've got a stihl O45 AVE that is over 40 year old was my dads now mine cut a minimum of 15 cords of wood ever year. And because its been taken care of its still running strong.
Maintenance changes everything! Thanks for watching & keep on piddling #americanpiddler
I made a adjustment tool out of a bic pen. Just take out the ball point and ink tube. Then just push it on a screw and it will mold to the shape with splines and everything. 💯❗️
Very cool life hack lol! Thanks for watching don't forget to subscribe and keep on piddling! #americanpiddler
Great video. For my turning tools I simply put a white dot [Office whiteout] on the shaft of the tool. Makes the job a little easier in gauging turns.

Excellent excellent video. I had her adjust your saw. You’re the first owner to shove it. Kudos to you.😊
It's really important to know for a beginner how to tune a chainsaw properly
Thanks for watching & keep on piddling #americanpiddler
The best explanation to adjusting a carburetor I have seen any where. Great job.

Thank you for sharing your experience as well! I also appreciate the kind words! Thanks for watching!
thank you I screwed up and couldn't find a video where any body started from beginning like that so thank you very much

Thanks Man!! Good video. I have Husqvarna 351 here in Finland. This video helped me tuning my saw after carburetor parts change.
Thank you for this video. My old Craftsman chainsaw never ran very well, and after replacing the fuel lines a plastic part on the carburetor broke and I had to replace the carburetor. After watching your video I was able to tune the new carb, and now the saw runs better than it ever has.
This is exactly why we do what we do! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
good video for the average dude trying to get the carb correct. the focus is on sound which was great. thanks a lot man!!!!!!!

Will this work on other brands of saws (i.e. Craftsman, Stihl, McCullough, etc.) or is this specifically for a 455 Rancher?

"To lean where its gonna blow itself apart" 💀 damn now I dont wanna even wanna try it. For the saws life and mine 😂
Understandably so! My saws still running strong just have to be careful! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
Thanks a lot for the tuning instruction. My Husqvarna doesn't want to start warm soon after the factory. At present, it has a rich fuel mixture, gives gaps during gassing, loss of power, and smoke exhaust.
Check out our "Chainsaw won't start 3 Reasons why" episode! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler also check your exhaust screen!
Slow your chain speed down learn to jog your chain 10x the life
Great tips & advice! Thanks for sharing and Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler

Great video I find marking the splined tools also helps out thanks for sharing

Echo cs400 owner/modder. Once you remove the limit caps, a tiny flat blade screwdriver is all you need. No special tools at all
Also, high side tuning CAN NOT be properly done unless the saw is under full load in a cut

great vid. Probably the best carb tuning vid Ive watched.

Just came across this video. Best one I've found for tuning a carb. Thanks!
That saw likely has a limited coil. Thus it should be tuned in the wood. Hitting the limiter sounds like 4 cycling. Older saws with unlimited coil you can set by ear, limited coil under load in the wood.
There's jack of all trades, and theres jack wagons... #1 fixit tool ive found, is Seafoam😁
Thx good advice and stressing that more is not always better. I like the fact that you start from a basic setting and tune from there.
Great video sir. One thing you didn’t mention was that the air filter must be cleaned or replaced with a new one before any adjustments are done to the carb.
Very true! Great point, Thanks for stopping by hope you subscribed! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
THIS IS WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR !!!!
How to bypass going to the dealer !!!!
Yes sir that's exactly why I made this video! So glad it helped you!
lxmzhg I agree with you on by passing the dealer.
The machinery industry is not just about technology but also about innovation and application.
Great video but you forgot one thing, and I think you will agree. Before making adjustment you should clean your air filter, or you could end up being too lean if you clean it after.
Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
Thanks for the vid, it really helped me understand. For whatever reason I kept thinking when you turned 1 you had to turn the other. Now it's a lot more clear. I'll go give it a try.
Absolutely wonderful explanation for a beginner like me! Thank you!

1.5 is NOT the be all, end all for all engines.
works great for us & others... Thanks for sharing & watching! "Keep on Piddling" #americanpiddler
