    -
    In the late 13th century, the Mongol empire has laid waste to entire nations along their campaign to conquer the East. Tsushima Island is all that stands between mainland Japan and a massive Mongol invasion fleet led by the ruthless and cunning general, Khotun Khan. As the island burns in the wake of the first wave of the Mongol assault, samurai warrior Jin Sakai stands as one of the last surviving members of his clan. He is resolved to do whatever it takes, at any cost, to protect his people and reclaim his home. He must set aside the traditions that have shaped him as a warrior to forge a new path, the path of the Ghost, and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.

    When I finished this game for the first time, I chose to spare Shimura.
    My reasoning was that Jin was no longer following the way of the samurai, and I felt that he wouldn't want to kill the last family he had left.
    And personally, I had the mindset of "there has been enough senseless killing".

  • @Merwanor
    @Merwanor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +62

    What I love about this ending is that either show fits the story.
    The ending is essentially about Jin either embracing the fact that the way of bushido is not the path he walks anymore, or that he actually still believes in that path and he feels he still have a sense of honor within him. The themes of this game is centered a lot around family, honor and change.
    When it comes to the kill ending, I think the theme they focus on here is more about the relationship between Uncle/Father and Nephew/Son. And while it is an ending that ends up with one of them dying, it sort of focuses more on the bonds between them. Jin still retains some of his honor, or at least he still believes in the ways his Father thought him, even if technically he is no longer a Samurai, he still believe in those virtues, at least to some extent. It is a really tragic but also a very touching moment that I think focuses more on that relationship instead of the thematic story about the war itself. And the focus here is more about Shimuras effect on Jin than the war itself. He is still the Ghost, but not completely.
    When it comes to the spare ending, I think the theme here focuses more on the effects of Jins choices and the change to his personality over the course of the journey. In this ending he accepts that the path of Bushido is no longer his path, and he is not willing to sacrifice anyone else for the virtues that his Uncle thought him. Since Jin spares Shimura it often comes across as the good ending, and that is not essentially wrong but you have to understand that his Uncle will be honor bound to hunt Jin down as he is now an outlaw, someone he loves as a son. So it is not exactly a happy ending either. I think this ending distances itself a bit from the relationship between Shimura and Jin and it is more about the effects the war itself has had on Jin. He has now truly become the Ghost.
    I am still unsure which ending I prefer, though I have to admit that I found the kill ending to be a lot more emotional than the spare ending, which is why I might like it a bit more. But the spare ending is perhaps more thematically fitting when it comes to the games story, at least the story about the Ghost itself. I think it boils down to witch aspect of the story one enjoyed the most. Was it the relationship between Shimura and Jin, or the fight against the Mongols and Jin becoming the Ghost.
    Edit: There is one small detail that puzzles me with the "spare" ending. How on earth did Jin get Shimuras armor? If he is still alive, why would Jin dishonor him by stealing his armor? But when you kill him it fits more that he takes the armor as a memento. Since he did not really have any other family.

    • @nickbusker725
      @nickbusker725 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Good analysis. I went with spare, as I could not imagine killing Shimura. I felt it went well with the theme of the game - Jin’s evolution into the ghost. As Shimura said, Jin is no longer a samurai. So, I felt that I didn’t need to “honor” him and kill him. That being said, just now watching this ending, I feel it hits a bit harder emotionally. You can’t go wrong with either choice.

    • @krissuyx
      @krissuyx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly. I picked the spare ending myself. He frees himself from the bonds that forbid him from doing what he believes to be the right thing.
      Some people keep saying that Shimura will have to commit seppuku but that's conjecture based on real world rules. The game's bushido code doesn't exactly follow its real world counterpart completely. The fact that Jin hopes uncle will forgive him implies that he's still around.

    • @mogul188
      @mogul188 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@nickbusker725 I see what you mean but Jin never wanted to disgrace his uncle. Theres a reason shimura wanted to die. Either he couldn't live knowing how Jin was the ghost or he would be punished by the shogun. In my opinion leaving him alive is like spitting in his face one final time , completely disgracing him and leaving him to either be punished by the shogun or severely depressed. Killing him honors shimura and shows respect and lets shimura die knowing Jin didn't completely detach himself from the samurai way (Also you get a way more intimate interaction with him if you kill him) but thats just my interpretation. (Also some comment i read had said theres an npc who tells you shimura killed himself after sparing him but i'm not sure if thats true)

    • @lux6089
      @lux6089 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the effect the war had on him wasn't just about Jin becoming the ghost in the spare ending. But also about him not "honoring" his uncle's wishes for a warriors death not just because of him being the ghost, but also due to the fact that their tradition is simply too restrictive. It's gotten more people killed than what it's worth.
      Killing Shimura won't change the fact that killing with or without honor won't change how dark and depraved the act is. Rubbing alittle honor on it won't spare you the emotional ramifications of such an act. It's not as simple as, "If I don't kill him it will disrespect him, therefore I must honor him with a warriors demise.".
      When sparing him gives him a chance to face his decisions in life, and maybe see that everything he's followed has kind of been a sham. Killing only proves that you really haven't learned anything. The way of the Ghost is about sacrifice, resilience, selflessness, and teaching others how to be strong in the worst of times. Maybe keeping Shimura alive will have the same type of effect.

    Honestly both the endings were amazing. I chose to spare him personally. It really depends what your interpretation of Jins emotions were in the moment. I spared Shimura because Jin could not lose any more of his family. He already killed his father once, and he was not going to do it again. I also did it as an act of defiance against the Samurai code and his line perfectly summarises that "I have no honour, but I will not kill my family". As if killing your family is an honourable thing to do. Further showing how backwards the way of the Samurai is.

    As someone who 100% the game (artifacts, records, etc.) and plans to do a 2nd playthrough on the new lethal difficulty. I have to say I believe this is GOTY. As soon as you take back Castle Kaneda the game gets so much better. I honestly got emotional when my horse died and when I had to fight Shimura and I spared Shimura because he's Jin's only family and the whole point of Jin becoming The Ghost is him losing any bit of honor he has in him and accepting the burden of The Ghost and his new persona. I think sparing Shimura is the canon ending, but I'm not too sure, could be wrong. Everything about this game is great, it isn't perfect, no game is perfect, but if this doesn't get GOTY I will be disappointed.

    53:19 This is tricky and took a bit of thinking, but I personally think you made the right choice killing him. I chose the Spare option because it made the most sense to me. By killing his uncle it shows Jin is still bound and enslaved by the Samurai Code while sparing him shows Jin has embraced the Ghost within. To Jin, family was always more important than some code of honor so why would Jin place honor above his family’s life now after everything he went through? That’s just how I see it but I love both endings, this one was sad but good too.

    • @pcj27
      @pcj27 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      After watching someone else play through the game, I thought the exact same thing after the ending. The line he says to Shimura when he spares him sums up his actions throughout the game.
      Jin has chosen the path of the "Ghost". While Shimura is still bound to honor and believes that he must kill Jin, Jin is able to refuse to kill because he is no longer samurai.

    • @brucesnow7125
      @brucesnow7125 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The line he says is so amazingly written - "I have no honor, but I will not kill my family". You would think that he would say "and/so I will not kill my family", but no, he uses "but". He is basically saying that killing his uncle is not honorable. Technically it is honorable according to Samurai code. But, Jin now clearly believes that Samurai honor is no honor at all.

This is a good, unhappy ending but the killing option isn't bad either, retaining some sense of honor but at the same time it shows how he's looming over the past than looking forth to tomorrow. The point is if you won't do it for honor then do it for love.

    I think the most sad thing is that the bad/good ending can be reflected in where Jin decides to make his new home. In the "bad" ending, he ends up in Dawn Refuge, which is a place ridden of life, and filled with bad storms. In the "good" ending, he ends up in Tradition's End, which is filled with life, and clear skies.

  • @Joseph-mw2rl

    Jin already chose the "no honor" Ghost path. He redefined honor. Samurais like Jin's dad slaughtered thousands of innocent lives in the name of honor, just shows that Samurai honor doesn't mean moral. Since jin already abandoned the code, why would he snap back to it and kill the one that raised him? The Ghost would never do such a thing. He said "I have no honor, but I will not kill my own family" and puts on the ghost mask to embrace this identity and path. That is the correct ending that fit his character

    Regardless of killing him or not "The Ghost will be hunted for the rest of his days" is a true statement, sparing him or not, the consequences for doing his ways away from the code will still go against Jin's favour from the mainland Shoguns even after all that he accomplished they will never respect him because it does not honor the samurai's code even though he saved many lives. The choice to killing uncle in my eyes was just to respect his wish rather than a warrior's death because that is not what he is asking for, a warrior's death by your own family, Jin was basically like a son to him is no warrior's death. Personally I viewed it as his uncle is only running away because of how emotionally and mentally conflicted he really is because his supposed to be son that will carry on his legacy did not go along with his desires and beliefs in the end but there is also nothing wrong with that. Jin made a "choice" to change even if it means to go against those morals/beliefs he grew up into, just to save everyone that he cares for and for those he met along the way.
    I spared him but I think both ending is valid to each their own, it's just that with Jin's character progression and how he changed and adapt as a person away from the constraint and all that he abide his life to for the way of the samurai. Will killing uncle really change anything other than for honoring his wish and the pride of the samurai code? regardless good or bad Jin will forever remain the two side of the coin " The Ghost and the The Samurai" He has become a new breed someone who adapts with changes of the world to protect those who he cares for, why must there be senseless sacrifices if there is another way around it to be victorious while minimising losses.
    Jin's uncle deeply cares for him I don't think he will commit a seppuku, It was a duel that neither of them wanted in the first place Jin's character was no longer constraint with the samurai's way of thinking. Lord Shimura also could have just reported to the shogun that he failed to find the whereabouts of Jin, he can no longer be found after the final battle with the khan. Remember a lot of people in the island still don't even know who the ghost is let alone the shogun and people of the mainland they don't even know what Jin sakai looks like, with the time period of this game was set in and throughout my playthrough how the culture of japan was during those timeline people relied heavily on superstitious beliefs/rumors.
    I really love this game I hope everyone had a fantastic time with Ghost of Tsushima! I believe we will get a sequel or a dlc would be great too with a plot that will lead to a sequel in the future, Jin talks about dealing with the remaining mongols after talk with Yuna at the end but also mentions dealing the Shogun?!?!?!?

    You did the right thing at the end. This game is so good. They should make part 2 where jin goes to mainland or even china? That would be awesome. Best defense is sometimes offense. Jin is the founder of ninja sect it see. Maybe jin will save the shogun and his family cause there was a ninja who saved shoguns family in real life if I am not wrong. Ninjas came later when samurai system was already established .so it fits and shogun also had their own ninjas under them so who knows. Waiting for part 2

    I too killed him off. What people don't understand is the Bushido code and what it means to live your entire life by it. I myself can't fully understand it, to its deepest meanings, since I wasn't raised like that, but I know enough to understand the *motivations* behind the choices the characters make and yes as you said: that was the only way for them to have some closure, there was no other way. For a samurai honor was the most important thing, it's above everything else, and it's well worth dying for no matter who your killer was.
    To survive a honorable fight to the death because your opponent had mercy, pity of you, was the biggest shame a warrior could wear in those times.

    Sequel Idea Jin disappears from Japan all together with his ghost army to found the league of shadows. Except in this universe there is no batman to stop them.

    I think both ending had its own good and bads, at first i went with the letting him live ending but after thinking about it in the credits, remmeber jin says that his head is the cost for shimura to starta new family, he fails that task, he would have to commit seppuku for failing the shogun. ( OR have his rights to remarry revoked because he still stopped the invasion of the mainland and he'd probably commit seppuku anyways after that ) so i went back and honored him :( plus he calls you his son and ask for you to find him in the next life, that hits.

      also, if you kill him, he will be remembered as a honorable samurai who died fighting for tsushima and the shogun. If he lives, he will forever be taunted with the fact, he failed as a father and a samurai that failed the shogun.

    There is a white dye merchant in the middle of the first region, next to a bamboo strike on a mountain.

    OMG! you didnt finish yurikos sidequest? D: its by far the saddest story of the game. it got me even more emotional than the actual ending.

    40 years old, grown man and cried like baby watching the Lion King scene during the kill ending...
    Just masterpiece. The way they directed the third act and ending was just devastating and will be remember forever.
    GOTY 2020! No competition.
