Instead of using bamboo, some of these Samurai would stack criminals that are ready to be executed like a tower where their belly is on each other's back and then try to "test their blade" on these would-be executed criminals by cutting them up into halves with one hack. If it goes thru 2 guys cleanly, it is a good blade. Anything beyond 3 is amazing. This practice continued deep into WWII where military officers would bunch up captured POWs or even civilians (That's because WWII IJA were really that fucking sick) and lob off as many heads as possible with one stroke to practice their kenjutsu and also test their blade strength and lethality. Overrall, a great game with accurate cultural reference and also, great graphics and awesome swordsplay to boot. However, the only drawback I felt that the game could do better on was the voiceover. It was horrendously bad that everyone has close to zero emotions when they speak or total lack of feelings and the lip sync was so bad sometimes that the voice comes out in Japanese but the mouth movement was so out of whack that when they did the Kurosawa effect, it was even more amplified. Other than that, good game.
i know this comment is from a year ago but i think they fixed the lip sync for japanese audio in the most recent update because this was a common criticism.
@@breensprout Only the PS5 version has proper Japanese lip sync. Which sucks, because it only makes it far more apparent that this game was made for the PS5.
What’s interesting though is that the Japanese used capes for a practical purpose as an arrowcatch. Although it was mostly worn by calvary as far as I know.

6:27 One correction I have to make: The katana that samurai used did not have this feature. They are referring to the 20th century katana issued to the IJA for their modern conflicts. What they had instead was a snugly fitted habaki, or blade collar, that would create some friction and lock it in place somewhat. However, the samurai did push their blade out past the habaki for much the same reason.
3:05 This is perfet seeing as though they added the whole Kurosawa Mode. They tried to make the game an old school samurai movie as much as they could.
2:41, not quite. For the ones who don't know, if you swipe right on the touchpad you can manually sheath your katana and Jin cleans it when it's with blood. very cool animations, can't call yourself a samurai if you don't do that after every fight. (And if you swipe down you can bow)
Didn't expected to find the person responsible for that absolutely amazing real action from TITANS here. Bruh, your work makes at least 50% of whatever quality the show has.
@@tzukishiro haha they could have done something like RDR2 though, where your damage decreases a bit as the need for maintenance increases. RDR2 had a good balance of realism vs annoyance with that; cleaning your guns didn't really makes much difference (unrealistic) but was enough to make you want to do it occasionally which I did increased the feeling of immersion.
ROBERT STANLEY I mean...hot springs do have health benefits in real life (though I doubt they'd magically make you more resilient to sword hits), and fully functional charms like the ones in this game are just something we all wish existed in real life. Imagine getting double cash just from using a cash machine whilst wearing a charm of inara.
ROBERT STANLEY I'd like to see a historian review both: they could talk about the charms and then go on to say "many historical records from 1274 to 1281 have described the ass of the Japanese male as being almost exactly like Jin's ass, so I think the developers did a really good job there. It was also traditional at the time for men who were using the hot springs to always leave the spring at an angle that just barely prevents the camera from seeing their junk"
Fun fact. Most of the inexplicable parts of the game are super natural. It’s heavily implied by the characters. During the flashback to Kazumasa’s funeral characters mention that Kazumasa is the wind against Jin’s back, and also mention that Jin’s mother’s favourite bird was the golden bird that leads us to side activities and vanity items
What they were saying about the samurai clan armor having a bulky look and being silly for traversal is lowkey the main reason I never really wore it lmao. You look like a tank sneaking around and doing all this ninja shit. I run the Ronin, Traveler's, and lowest level Sakai armor right now in the game because of it.
I pretty much only run the traveler and Ronin aesthetic too. Even on hard, the armored sets make the fights too easy to survive with the massive health, damage and resolve gains whereas getting outnumbered with Ronin and traveler outfits is very easily a death sentence if you don't respect your opponents. Plus there's just a certain je ne sais quoi about dueling a straw hat Ronin dressed as a straw hat Ronin
Tadayori all the way for me. Though on my 2nd playthrough I am currently running the Adachi armor since I want to do less ghost and more samurai this time around.
its less retarded when you wear basic armor, gameplay upgrades are the same but you can switch between visual upgrades, I did that with clan sakai armor

08:25 …. There is no hip hinge in traditional samurai armor because the hip and leg- armor is strapped to the torso that lays on a big puffy belt wrapped around your hip. You would secure the construction with 2 belts an the hip from the outside so all weight is on the hip and no weight is on the shoulders so you can move the arms freely.
@@tylerbroveak2559 They're saying you never actually see Jin sit down and clean his blade like a proper swordsman. Yeah he wipes the blood off but you never see him actually do any cleaning of the blade.
5:07 reminds me of how Mongolian cavalry archers draw with their high draw shortbows. Over the head while racking an arrow, level while drawing. Only meant for quick shots because of the elasticity of the wood maybe not returning to original draw, I theorize. Although, this is Japanese. I'll have to look more into it. I'm glad they mentioned it.
Something they got wrong: Jin actually does clean his blade off. He tosses the blood completely aside, leaving it clean and wipes it off his sleeve before sheathing it. Now with the incindiary oil, yeah he doesn’t clean that shit off 😂
I think they meant actually taking the time to really wipe the blade down instead of just throwing the blood off the sword because they do mention how Jin wipes the blade on his sleeve before sheathing it.
I think they mentioned it in the first one, whilst also pointing out that it's more of a traditional gesture than actual cleaning (I might have gotten it mixed up, I watched several historical reviews on the game). To really get the blade clean you'd probably need some water and a piece of cloth.
You can't even clean water off a blade properly by just violently swiping the air with it, let alone blood which starts sticking and drying seconds after it touches any surface. Wiping it on your clothing is certainly more effective but still not enough. The swipe he does in the game is mostly Hollywood flair as far as I know (which is still cool haha). You need a clean (and preferably soft) cloth or rag partially wet to first wipe off the staining and then use the dry part to clean up the excess. Some people also use preservant oils afterwards to be especially sure that it stays in top condition. Only after the blade is completely dry should you put it in a seath. Otherwise you just destroy the insides of the seath with all sorts of filth that also damages the blade. Not posting all this as an attack or anything just wanna lend knowledge.
Mk Otaid no, that’s not just Hollywood flair. That’s an actual maneuver in Japanese swordsmanship. Many schools require the maneuver after completing a cutting exercise. Look up mat cutting or bamboo rack cutting videos. They do this maneuver after every cut
@@tylerbroveak2559 Fair enough yes I've seen it done before and not in movies only but never looked this up in particular. As far as practicality goes though I still don't think it's proper for cleaning a blade and more along the terms of cool factor, that's the only reason I used the term (and again I said AFAIK so I was wrong). It's still a real thing though and the devs made sure to include it. We pretty much have to take into account that the PC cleans his weapons during downtime and not actual gameplay and the way I see it adding a gear condition feature was probably discussed but left out because it may have slowed down the flow of the action. Anyways, blabbing on... Thanks for the correction.
2:44 you swipe on the touch pad to wipe the blade Jin does it every once in a while but it’s all on the player which is really cool... same with showing respect by bowing down towards someone
There are a few HEMA vs Kenjistu fight videos out there. The longsword and katana are pretty evenly matched and usually depend on the skill of the fighter. The reach of the rapier can usually defeat both the longsword and the katana.

My only issue is that when his sword is the sheath the blade is facing upwards so when we draws on the standoff he'd essentially be slicing them with the blunt side of the sword. At no point does he turn it around
You could try TAP plastics if you have one. They will cut to your specs. Then you need a track to put it in. Or I guess you could attach it to a heavy base with screws. Actually, Home depot or Lowes might be able to do it too. Just check any local hardware/building supply place.
@@Agencyagent34 because this is the story of Jin Sakai. His story is far from over, and part 2 will resolve it. Won't make sense to throw in a female protagonist to carry on his story. And in his time era there are no such thing as female samurai. Only female warrior's.

They should get you on this channel lol
I mean, the game was originaly made in english and the japanese audio is just a dub. That's why It doesn't mach.
i know this comment is from a year ago but i think they fixed the lip sync for japanese audio in the most recent update because this was a common criticism.
@@breensprout Only the PS5 version has proper Japanese lip sync. Which sucks, because it only makes it far more apparent that this game was made for the PS5.

This has been one of the most fun games I’ve ever played and I’ve played A LOT.

They didnt review charms or hot springs, but at least we know Lawrence is easy to fake out in a duel 👌
@@MythicSuns history on charms would have been interesting, and I only want them to look at springs so they can review Jin's Toned Ass.

That single hand on the sword horizontal above your head is called the st.George guard in British military sabre and Backsword
I like to snipe the archers in the traveler outfit then wear the full Samurai armor to just walk right into the camp like a boss and swang swords with all them Mongols!

This is honestly really great. Respect both these guy's knowledge
"Oh u dont know that technique"
"no I dont"

You could try TAP plastics if you have one. They will cut to your specs. Then you need a track to put it in. Or I guess you could attach it to a heavy base with screws. Actually, Home depot or Lowes might be able to do it too. Just check any local hardware/building supply place.
They're making this game much more sexier than it actually is. Omg. I need a New game+ or a part 2 NOW. with NO female protagonist tyvm
Why no female protagonist
@@Agencyagent34 because this is the story of Jin Sakai. His story is far from over, and part 2 will resolve it. Won't make sense to throw in a female protagonist to carry on his story. And in his time era there are no such thing as female samurai. Only female warrior's.
