    Hi Tom, I looked at many videos now and whether you use std or IMS, etc, you do still get spay. Won't it be better just to get a better basket with more holes for that std portafilter with 2 holes. That way you know your portafilter will sit correctly without any issues as deswcribed in most reviews. You will have an un-pressurized filter, which will basically work the same as most portafilters in restaurants with spouts and you won't get any spray either.

      Should I take the measurements with the new basket (not arrived yet) or I can go with the original one that seems like to be a bit deeper ?

    How did you put the basket inside the portafilter with the spring on? The after market basket is wider on the side bottom part. Did you have to adjust the spring to have more room?
    And also, do you use de double dose basket for both single and double dose extraction? When I use my single dose basket I can't tamp the coffee enough because of the narrow part of the basket.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You just have to kind of work the basket in there. It will fit, if you finesse it. I always just do a 14 gram dose. The single cup baskets are too finicky for me.

      @King-Cobra31 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey there
      - make sure your coffee is freshly grinded, from the store or at home if you have an acceptable grinder (that you can set the grinding size, very important)
      For a single shot of espresso
      - 7 to 10 grams of fine grinded coffee ( you have to play with the grind size or get a good coffee from your corner coffee shop grinded for espresso, keep in mind every grinder is different so buy small amounts of grinded coffee until your find what works best for your machine. Number 3 worked well for me from different places, besides Starbucks where I had to get the finest they have, aka turkish grind )
      - temper well by giving it a good press, try to make it as level as possible, play with how much you press until you find something that works with the following tips
      - 20 to 30 seconds of extraction time, from when you hit the start button and the machine starts pumping
      - 1 oz or abt 30 ml of liquid including the crema
      For a double shot
      - 14 to 19 grams of fine grinded coffee ( read above)
      - temper well by giving it a good press, try to make it as level as possible, play with how much you press until you find something that works with the following tips
      - 20 to 30 seconds of extraction time, from when you hit the start button and the machine starts pumping
      - 2 oz or about 60 ml of liquid including the crema
      For a lighter taste coffee with more caffeine try a blonde roast. For a stronger taste but a bit less caffeine, try a darker roasted coffee. Or you can get a medium roasted for an in between experience.

      My old delonghi espresso machine had metallic basket holder, I believe it's similar aluminium alloy (no one would use pure aluminium anyway, it's too expensive and soft, and the alloy it should be safe enough). Now I'm considering to unscrew the plastic thingy from 685 holder, and just use it with the older bar14 classic basket. I already tried that, it fits the holder and it brews ok, but the thingy interferes with the flow. Sawing the holder seems like too much effort (for now). I might consider getting a bottomless one later on..

    Curious, isnt it just easier to just buy a naked portafilter? saw a few on amazon for like 40 bucks,.

    Hi!
    Thanks for the video :)
    Is it really necessary to cut at the very same height than the basket? Because I only cut the bottom part with the 2 holes, and it looks ok to me.
    (Beside the fact that I will have to bend down a bit more to see my extraction?😂)
    Mine looks more like this one:

    Any difference at the end?

      Hi Hugo! Sure you can cut it that way, but I like the look of it cut just at the basket, for the aesthetic. But there is one advantage to your way of cutting it - it will spray less. Cheers!

    They want to invent what is already invented, and then they say they are coffee lovers. For good coffee, the main one is the origin of the grain, the roasting, and the temperature of the water. If they do not have this, what they do to the filter holder will not serve anything. I drink coffee espresso at + 50 years. Coffee of all supplies, and the best that I drank to this day was a very small culture of the Huila -Angola plateau, and Santos - Brazil

    The factory portafilter makes a better espresso. The Bottomless Portafilter is not for a Dedica. Espresso is bad. DeLonghi engineers would make the bottmless portafilter that it is better. And less material is in naked portafilter. I have a Dedica 685 and Mini Mazzer and never espresso is not as good as a factory portafilter.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey Zeljko, using a bottomless portafilter is about experimenting, since you can see how your puck preparation and grind setting is.

    • @zelimirvelickovic
      @zelimirvelickovic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TomsCoffeeCorner And I've all experimented. CONCLUSION: The best portafilter is factory.
      And espresso do not drink from glass cups. Only ceramic, thick.

    • @DerZaubererFN
      @DerZaubererFN 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      With a bottomless portafilter you can really dial in your espresso and you'll only get good espresso with fresh beans and a dialed in grind size. The standard portafilter is double basket which creates crema even with old and stale beans. It all depends on what you actually want. I for myself have given up on this machine as I could not extract consistent shots day after day. Have bought a dual boiler with stable temperature during a shot. For me it was the right call. The advantage of the factory portafilter is that you don't have to nerd out and invest even more money and especially time in coffee/espresso making. It all depends on the use case.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DerZaubererFN Hey Paul, thanks for your comment. I find that the Dedica provides better temp stability than most little boiler machines. What dual boiler did you go with?

    • @DerZaubererFN
      @DerZaubererFN 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TomsCoffeeCorner I did go with the Breville Dual Boiler. I've adjusted the pressure gauge manually to hit 9 bars and not above. Temp stability is awesome as it's measured and (re)heated directly at the group head. For grinders I got the breville smart grinder pro and the mignon specialita. Not sure which one to sell yet.
