Thank you so much. I hacked the baskets pressurized layer off and also the portafilter and now the extraction looks a bit lighter but the flavors are so much better. Can't believe the difference. Amazing!
Can I just say… this and your other DeLonghi Dedica videos SAVED my just starting coffee home barista journey! I bought a bottomless portafilter for my Dedica and a Eureka minion zero grinder and was so keen to get this going! Only to get desperate by the portafilter dropping or tilting to the side or unwinding slowly and losing pressure during extraction, and not even when grinding too fine at all, as the shots I managed to get out were running at like 15-18 sec and 1:3 ratio… chaos and confusion, total despair! Logic states to grind finer (16g doses), but filter keeps popping, despite being the same size and having same 3’grip positions but very very slightly different shape/form. Decided to do what you did and I pulled the grinder! Chopped off the original portafilter and added only the new basket in, and I JUST MANAGED to get a 19 sec shot, 1:2.5 ratio with 16g in, without any explosion of my machine! Tomorrow I will slightly play with the grind size and fine tune that to 25-30sec, with the same or similar ratio (it’s a light to mid roast), and continue on the voyage to great home coffee! THANK YOU, Tom! God bless you!
Great video, so there isn't a replacement for that plastic diversion? Would be great if we can swap that out with a metal/stainless steel version so the hot water doesn't have to go through the plastic!
Hello Tom, I am from an Arab country (Morocco) and I would like to say that your content is very, very useful. I would like to ask you about an ECP 3420 machine that I wanted to buy but I only found the ECP3321 in the local stores, is there that essential difference between them?
I had also trouble finding a bottomless portafilter for a Chinese Dedica clone (BlitzHome BH-CM1530) , the ones I had from my Dedica did not fit (bit larger) so I went for 2 very cheap ones from Ali-express, the trick was to select ones that where 51 mm but did NOT mention delonghi or Dedica in the description .... They both fitted correctly. (I can provide link if you want and if they still sell those). This is my first youtube comment and I love watching your channel, keep up the good work!
Trying to find a bottomless portafilter for a breville roma esp8xl is like impossible. Not aure if you know a brand and model. But worse case senario is cutting it off and find a bascket to fit it. Thanks for the shared creativity solution. Great video. But if you come across anything for the breville rima please share and thank you.
First of all, great video! As someone who's having this model and trying to upgrade it, this video is pure gold. Although I'm wondering how you took off the collar so that the Bottomless Portafilter from the Delonghi fits in the SSMS as well...
I got the Normcore with the 24h IMS version for my Dedica and even with that one, the ears fit, but if I don't hold it in place, the bottomless portafilter unscrews itself from the pressure.
The delonghi pressurized filter has a thin metal band that holds the basket in place. Did you just remove it and throw your basket in without? Does this not cause any issues like leakage or loss of pressure?
There is a rubber gasket at the bottom of the brew group. When you lock in the portafilter, it pushes the basket up against the gasket creating an airtight seal. There are no leaks or any loss of pressure. The spring retainer clip only holds the basket to the portafilter. I remove the spring clips from my portafilters and never have any issues. This is how I rock; dose directly into the basket while its removed from the handle, level and tamp the puck, then (gently, you don't want to dislodge the puck) place it into the portafilter and lock it onto the grouphead. Since the basket sits flat on the counter or mat or scale, prep is much easier. Weighing is also easier since you don't have to balance an awkward handle on your scale. Hope this helps.
Tom, love your vids, new subscriber here. Quick Q: can you point me to the video about hot-rodding the Dedica wand? Thank you and keep up the great work sir! - Rand
About coffee beans, there are two cases I need solution. When I buy let's say 1kg Lavazza my espresso liquid tastes great for about a week, then It becomes so much worse. Still creates cream but coffee tastes like bitter water. Does this mean Its bag needs tighter sealing every time I open and close It? And the second case, when I buy fresh specialty coffee from a store nearby, sometimes even when first boughtly, I get that bitter taste coffee the first time I make. Other times I get great-tasting coffee and after time becomes bitter. I think It's a matter of how should I maintain coffee beans and for the fresh coffee beans, a matter of how freshly roasted they are, not how I brew coffee. I think In both cases I need a way for long time maintenance of my coffee beans. Can you recommend something? Putting them in fridge would be a good idea?
Hey Tom! I have the same machine and I bought the normcore 51mm portafilter. It came with an unpressurized basket as well but I can't find any info for how many grams the basket is made for. Any idea? Also, do you recommend I just get a new filter basket completely? Thanks
What if no sawing off the bottom at all, just remove the black plastic funnel, install the bottomless basket into portafilter. Coffee will shoot thru the bare alumninum holes? No sawing bottom do add visual appealing of brewing, but does not add taste difference?
Hi Tom! Does this work if I use pregrinded beans? I mean, is it worth it if I’m not doing all the steps. Also! Do you think a hand grinder works well for these cheap coffee machines? Thanks a lot! Hugs from Argentina
Hi there! Preground is going to be tough, because the beans lose their freshness after they're ground. Try finding a Kingrinder K4 - that is the best economical grinder I know.
The point of making it bottomless is to be able to "diagnose" the shot and visibly check for channelling or other extraction issues. Seeing the shot is pretty essential to that. But if you aren't looking for a DIY project removing the plastic will help with crema in non-pressurized shots
@@TomsCoffeeCorner I was going to ask the exact same question. I would say that if you not concerned about viewing every extraction, then the std portafilter without plastic will give the same results and you can fill 2 shots at same time too and have less mess/squirts to the sides.
Thanks for all replies, because I have another portafilter Neouza bottomless it's cheap but a good one. And I planning to by one more, just not need if I remove plastic. Crema all the same in all portafilters. Thanks.
@@gregesterhuysen7979 one thing worth noting is that you can't really fill 2 shots at once because removing the plastic means removing the screw holding the plastic and creates a third hole in the middle of the portafilter where most of the liquid comes out
I just order a bottomless portafilter, they are saying compatible with some gaggia model, but with 3 "ears" so... I think i just challenged myself 😂😂. I just wait to see the thickness of the ears🤦🏻
hello, please, can anyone give me advice, I bought a bottomless lever, I have a Delonghi coffee machine, but I have a problem when I want to make an espresso, the coffee is like dripped, filtered, no cream, thanks for the answer.

Attacking a portafilter with a hacksaw is so satisfying. Espresso hackery for the win. Well done Tom.
Thank you so much. I hacked the baskets pressurized layer off and also the portafilter and now the extraction looks a bit lighter but the flavors are so much better. Can't believe the difference. Amazing!
@TomsCoffeeCorner Tom, could you pls tell me how did you manage to take off that collar from the Dedica's portafilter? 0:53
Hi Tom, well I finally got round to buying the bottomless for my Delonghi... hmmm coffee heaven... Thanks for the great advice!
Hey Tom, what about a review of the breville smart grinder pro, I would love to see that.
Tom's always up to something and it's always interesting.😂

Tom, did you ever have the basket stay up in the brewgroup when using a bottomless? Stilosa
Yes, it happens once in a while. I just remove it by pulling on one side. Cheers!

The Delonghi PF does fit with the collar removed, but only part way. It cannot be locked in, as the tabs are too thick.
Why dont u just cut the tabs/ears of the Delongi one. Will it be easier? Can u make a video of that?
I got the Normcore with the 24h IMS version for my Dedica and even with that one, the ears fit, but if I don't hold it in place, the bottomless portafilter unscrews itself from the pressure.
The Normcore should fit well. Mine has never given me issues with my Dedica...
Very clever hack.
A Port for the filter 😅 Such a satisfying video 👌🇿🇦

Hi Tom, your shots always look great did you use 14g? Also what beans are your daily “go to beans”? Thanks Andrew
Hey Andrew, I normally go for 16 gram doses. I use varying beans. For this one, I am using Samocca, from Rossmann.
Thank you for this video much appreciated
Thank you!
You betcha!

There's a new product called Airscape, which is supposed to be real good. Check it out here: amzn.to/3OgqKff (affiliate link)
Doesnt specialista arte portafilter fits in that lidl one ?
No, the tabs are not sized the same.

Probably 16 grams. I prefer the IMS H26 basket for Delonghi and for this. Cheers!

Sure you can do that, but it will come through 3 holes then (the 3rd hole from where the screw was).

If removing only plastic from the portafilter will probably have the same result as bottomless or not?
