Everyone should know you can change the "volume" of the shot on this machine. Hold down the button for as long as you want the shot to be, and the machine will remember for next time. Remember to only start timing after the pre-infusion after the machine waits for a second. The shot should pull for about 25-30 seconds. If you can't pull a good tasting shot in this time, change your grind. Another tip for this machine is not to tamp too hard. Compress the coffee and then stop. No need to put all your strength into it.

About the portafilter: A bottomless portafilter and a "normal" one should have no difference regarding the way they work. The difference is at the Delonghi default basket. Delonghi uses by default a pressurized basket that is very good to make a so-so coffe from any bean and grind so to make anyone feel a little like a barista at home. But it's definetely not good if u go for a higher quality taste with a budget machine. For this you need if you can't affort a more expensive machine then you go for the most basic upgrades: Normal basket and freshly grinded, thoroughly weighted coffe (the better quality the better the result). If u get the bottomless portafilter it will help you become better at espresso making by giving you access to watch the extraction. Nothing more. So: Non pressurized portafilter and a tamper that fits it. Scales. Quality coffe beans and grinder or freshly grinded coffe. A tip: Avoid re-freezing coffe beans. If you insist of keeping your beans in the freezer then devide them in portions and get out of the freezer what you need a night before.

I've got trouble with the stock pressurised portafilter: if I grind finer, it often gets totally stuck (blocked, with no flow). It happens more often on the smaller (8 gram) one. The problem is the coffee is definitely NOT too fine for espresso. I am so fed up with it that I ordered the bottomless non-pressurised portafilter to try doing things the right way.

I would like to ask you about the De'Longhi Dedica Espresso Machine EC885. I want to buy it with a professional bottomless, non-pressurized portafilter. Is it effective to use this portafilter with the machine? I've heard that this type of small coffee maker has a higher water pressure, around 15 bars or more, which may not be suitable with a professional bottomless, non-pressurized portafilter. Also, What degree of grind did you use for the coffee?
its a filter. the original portafilter is a pressurised one, so it has a small hole that it uses to generate crema for the espresso, the black ring is a filter that's removable so that the small hole doesnt get blocked by the coffee grinds
Is the video beautiful - right? Although why create it with constant squelching in the background? I don't understand why you need to boil 34g of espresso from 14g of coffee - this is also an over-extract - only bitterness. Plus, in 34 seconds - it's a wild over-extract. We do not yet take into account the fact that your timer starts when the first drops enter the cup. In fact, the first drops fall into the cup at ~ 5th second, and due to the pre-wetting mode of the Delonghi ec685 coffee maker, the first drops fall into the cup at all at 8-9 seconds. How do you drink this bitterness. And why are you knocking on the portafilter? This creates cracks in the condensed coffee. And why are you screwing the tempera? You just need to squeeze.
Can you please tell me which filter your using on the bottomless portafilter and where did you purchased it from. I'm on my second filter and I can't and I still can't find the right filter to work. Thanks

I sawed off the bottom of the original portafilter, pretty easy and you still have the original fit. Don't use the original baskets if you go bottomless. The original baskets are pressurized baskets with one single hole on the outside - this counters the only use of a bottomless portafilter, you still can't see the extraction going on. Most people buy Graef baskets that are good quality and fit the original holder.

I bought one which is supposed to fit on a Dedica (according to the seller) but it turns out slightly loose and the portafilter came off mid brewing and created a big mess! So now I have to hold on to it whenever I start brewing.
I have delonghi ec 820. Do you think I could use the same handle (portafilter) like for 685? It is has also 51mm, 3 ears. I am not sure about thickness of the ears. I have tried to search on the internet, even talked to some sellers on aliexpress, but noone helped me out...
Hi, my portafilter is unscrewing when I try to have a shot. I was not a case when I used after I had got it, but now it is sliding even when water is passing by smoothly.
I bought the portafilter you recommended but recently I’ve been having trouble with fine streams of splatters coming out of the portafilter. Have you experienced this so far? If so, what did you do to remedy this?
Distribute your coffee grounds on the basket and portafilter before tamping it, make sure it’s not off level. After that, if it still occurs, your grinder may not grinding properly and evenly.
Hi there, I have just bought a Dedica EC685 and I am trying to understand better how the coffee world works. I bought the dosing cup you advised but it cannot fit the standard portafilter so It's difficult for me put into it ground coffee. Do you have any advise?
Well, after grinding it needs some distribution by tipping on the portafilters side. Then I gently knock the porta on a hard surface with the bottom to get it settled - 3 times. I think it doesn't need rough tamping. But give it a little twist in the end. If this procedure doesn't help, maybe it's your grinder setting or coffee itself. I'm using modded original portafilter with modded original sieve. Pulling out 33g coffee out of 13g powder.
@@andrescyfy570 Thank you, I will surely try this one. Since I bought my grinder I only get a little channeling on the sides in about 15 secs then disappears. I will try to tip it because I have not tried it yet. Thank you

Thank you for your nicely prepared video. May I ask if the pressure you tamped the coffee ground were the same for both brews? I have heard that there is no need to tamp the ground for pressurized basket as hard as for bottomless portafilter. Is that true?
How do you get your crema to look so nice? I just got a non pressurised filter and my crema keeps coming out very light in colour which I understand is a sign of an underextracted shot. I don't have a grinder but I'm using coffee that was grinded in the roastery today. I've asked them to do a "standard" espresso grind for one bag and a slightly coarser one for another, but neither seem to come out nicely.
the under exctraction could also be because of the temperature not being right, which out of the box it isnt on this machine. Try this and see if it helps somewhat : 1. Set the temperature to High (instructions in the manual) 2. make 2 empty double shots. This ensures that the brewing temperature of the water is correct and prevents under extraction. I tested with a thermometer, and by default the temperature in cup would be around max 64 degrees celcius (147.2) but by changing brew temperature and taking out 2 empty shots it came to the usual 160 to 165 range, which is ideal. In tasting my coffee I also noticed it was not sour anymore (underextracted) which it was before I changed the settings
@@Dhruv1223Each time I want to use I should take those two water extractions? I have another problem when I use non pressurize porta filter my crama goes away so fast under 1 min but with normal porta filter it stays for long time is this because of underextraxtion?

Hi, Really struggling to dail in my grinder and EC680. I am currently on the finest setting that allows my EC680 to push water through without it stalling. I am trying to solve sour shots. I tried reducing puck size down from 18g to 15g to lower pressure and that worked but any less and tamping does not help. Upgraded to bottomless portafilter. I read that you must not reduce puck size and MUST stick with puck that fits basket plus or minus 1g. latest is 15g in, 37g out, 30sec from first drip but still sour. Any advise?
Just can't get any crema out of it. Most of the time water doesn't even pass through the filter, don't matter if I use the original or the non presurized. Been practicing for weeks, still don't get satisfactory results.

It's a nonsense to compare double shot 18 g with single 14 g. It does not depend on portafilter, but depends on time / volume. Set your grind and volume to get weight of the puck x 2 g just before 25 s and you will have nice coffee. After 30 s you will get too bitter one.

What basket size are you using? My bottom of the basket doesn’t reach till the end of the portafilter.
Nice vid, congrats! What is the purpose of the piece with black rubber in the original portafilter?
its a filter. the original portafilter is a pressurised one, so it has a small hole that it uses to generate crema for the espresso, the black ring is a filter that's removable so that the small hole doesnt get blocked by the coffee grinds
So if i want to sell coffee, i just add 14g.still get the same weight result just taking bit longer
Whats the portafilrer name and size
At 2:50 when the initial pour starts for me, it’s dark and clear and then a couple seconds later gets foamier. Why is this? Old beans?
whats a good grind level for the bottomless portafilter? fine |? too fine?

Are you grinding the grains fine enough?
I use delonghi KG521 grinder. what is degree shall I use, please? Can you tell me?
have you done anything to the machine's water pressure? for me, in 18gr out 36gr takes 12 seconds.. for me it seems the dedica takes time rather the water volume when you configure the two brewing buttons.
is your grind size fine enough? or is your tamping pressure heavy enough? you should try and check those two variables
@@whoami724y i'm guessing the grind size is the issue. i use a cheap blade grinder at the moment. tamping pressure should be okay. i was very surprised to see that 18-36 could be achieved for more than 20 seconds as I thought it's impossible with the Dedica due to the water pressure. but, i'm getting a proper grinder soon and will check.
@@heliu5 well there's your problem, blade grinder is a no no for espresso. you should get baratza sette, i hear its good for espresso

double shot basket.

Switched to a bottomless filter and getting no cream at all, my grinder is the Dedica KG520...
Delonghi dedica kg520 can't grind coffee beans as finely enough to be used with bottomless.

@@animalloverwashere kg 79 is the best, can grind almost like flour. too bad it does not deliver directly in the portafilter.
What the heck is that noise?
the 2 portafilters you suggest are no longer available, can you send some links to some that are please? and can you tell me if the original baskets can still be used in these? thanks from downunder
Most people buy Graef baskets that are good quality and fit the original holder.
can you please tell me what type of tamper 51mm r you using for the non presurized basket because a buy one from ebay and its not fit very well, my non presurized basket is from ebay
You said 18g out 34g 25sec. This 25sec count from when u press the button? or when the espresso comes out?
You can clearly see from the video that scale timer starts when coffee starts to drip
Hi Arty, very nice video! The link for the portafilter on Amazon is not working anymore. Do you have any portafilter to recommend for a Dedica?
I bought one which is supposed to fit on a Dedica (according to the seller) but it turns out slightly loose and the portafilter came off mid brewing and created a big mess! So now I have to hold on to it whenever I start brewing.
Same question. Did you find one that works for you? Thanks
Is it possible to put only 10g of coffee on that botomless portafilter ?
You can, but I'm not sure if I can do it well.

High. It's also interesting that the device can't provide stable high temperature during the extraction process, there is a video about it on YT.
Hi, my portafilter is unscrewing when I try to have a shot. I was not a case when I used after I had got it, but now it is sliding even when water is passing by smoothly.

one of the "feature" of bottomless portafilter. I sick with my normal, stock one
Distribute your coffee grounds on the basket and portafilter before tamping it, make sure it’s not off level. After that, if it still occurs, your grinder may not grinding properly and evenly.
Check your grind

Hi what coffee beans are you using?
Medium roast coffee beans.
Hi there,
I have just bought a Dedica EC685 and I am trying to understand better how the coffee world works.
I bought the dosing cup you advised but it cannot fit the standard portafilter so It's difficult for me put into it ground coffee.
Do you have any advise?
You need to make sure its suitable for your machine.. use 51mm
Did you have any channeling when using a bottomless portafilter? If yes, how did you solve it?
Are you using pre-ground coffee? Never had it since I am using freshly ground coffee.
@@andrescyfy570 no I use fresh beans with my Eureka Mignon Facile grinder.
@@andrescyfy570 do you mind sharing the recipe you are using?
Thank you

The ground coffee you are using is too coarse.
do you think that graef cm702 good for this new portafilter?
I have never used this grinder. I don't know if grinding is fine enough.

I've Dedica and this same graef you are talking about and it works perfectly enough at 10 of 30 steps. Graef give you 3 spring washer to modify fineness if it isn't enough. I'm using it without modification.
Hi what diameter bottomless portafilter does this machine require?

Any ideas for a good 3-4cup bottomless basket ( around 18gr )??? those from china have big holes and splatter everywhere .no crema at all . The original holds 14gr i need a bigger one , ty in advance
I bought the Neouza set from Amazon: 2 cups 16-19g, 1 cup (idk, 1 cup is too tricky), bottomless portafilter and the filter plate. Then from IMS, i bought the screen replacement (the one on the machine with the middle screw). I also got an Eureka Silenzio single dose mod grinder (single dose kit from Etsy), the lever steam knob (also from etsy) and the rancilio silvia v1/v2 steam wand replacement from Amazon. Which espresso shot did you like the best?
The bottomless or the normal portafilter from dedica? :)
I also use both. Like the light taste of nolmal portafilter.

Hello! Beginner home espresso maker with the EC685 here! Thank you for the nice video!
Have fellow users here found the distributor to be an essential tool for a good cup of espresso? I’ve actually just learnt from this video that such thing exists! ☕️
You should find a good grinder like the Eureka Minog.
It's not about the portafilter, it's about the basket
Thank you for your nicely prepared video. May I ask if the pressure you tamped the coffee ground were the same for both brews? I have heard that there is no need to tamp the ground for pressurized basket as hard as for bottomless portafilter. Is that true?
I heard the same about tamping with the pressurised basket. They are designed for people who don't want to spend time dialling in etc.
If you have a good grinder, it will be easier.
the under exctraction could also be because of the temperature not being right, which out of the box it isnt on this machine. Try this and see if it helps somewhat :
@@Dhruv1223 when u say make 2 empty double shots, i presume u mean to just press the double shot button twice with just water?
@@mohdnizar6342 yes
@@Dhruv1223Each time I want to use I should take those two water extractions? I have another problem when I use non pressurize porta filter my crama goes away so fast under 1 min but with normal porta filter it stays for long time is this because of underextraxtion?

Hello Arty. Thanks for these videos. They help me very much to understand how to make some espresso. And... Ti understand that this original portafilter is not good.
It is stuck every day. And we always loose fresh milled coffee if the hole is blocked.

So i wanted to buy a new portafikter bottomless. But unfortunately those you out into your desrciption arent available.
The prices of alternatives are from 13 to 45 Euros. So maybe you could tell em the price of YOURS to dind a similar one?
Would be really kind. Because not only me but also my wife gets angry about that.
Get an IMS portafilter basket. They're top quality, don't just buy any one from amazon. Also, make sure it's 51mm for the dedica
Degree of perfect grinding ??
I can not identify. The fineness depends on the hardness of the ground coffee beans.
I find my coffee not good yet. Hope if i buy new temper not original plastic one it will be better. I wanted buy bottomless filter too but it cost much and that filter + temper and i could buy for that money even automatic coffee maker. I find it cool my delonghi ec685 but didnt knew if i want good coffee i need buy those 2 parts for 60€ :( buy temper will be ok but not that filter . If temper will be enough to make coffee taste better it will be amazing. (Well i only have him 2md day now so maybe i am just not good enought with it yet )

Hi,
Really struggling to dail in my grinder and EC680. Any advise?
I want you to try replacing the coffee beans. It is a medium-dark roast.
Did you set the higher temperature? It help too. And of course try different coffee and darker roast.
Just can't get any crema out of it. Most of the time water doesn't even pass through the filter, don't matter if I use the original or the non presurized. Been practicing for weeks, still don't get satisfactory results.
I think the machine doesn't have enough power to get the water through the coffee in the filter.

It's a nonsense to compare double shot 18 g with single 14 g.
It does not depend on portafilter, but depends on time / volume. Set your grind and volume to get weight of the puck x 2 g just before 25 s and you will have nice coffee. After 30 s you will get too bitter one.
