  • The Delonghi Dedica EC685 comes with pressurized espresso filter baskets. In this video, I show how to despressurize them with a 1/8" drill bit, to allow a non-pressurized espresso extraction. This is a very easy mod to do, and can help to get a better extraction with minimal effort. Just be aware that once you depressurize, you will need to grind finer.

    Looks like there is pressure being built up in the dual wall again. You can tell since the flow diverts to the sides rather than straight downwards like at the start. So I think a larger hole is better.
    Gonna try this! Thanks

    If you don't have a drill bit to make a hole likes what Tom did professionally, you can also do that by hammering a nail through. But to make the job easier, a smaller diameter nail should be used first, then making the hole bigger by using a bigger diameter one. Placing the cup on a piece of wood with the bowl facing upwards, then hammer the nail down (This is to prevent the cup from being dented if bowl facing downwards) and any protruding burrs outside the bowl can be smoothed out easily by using a simple file or a dremel (if you have one).

    Hi Tom. Your videos are always excellent. Not only your mastery in coffee but the way you explain things make them very special. I enjoy them very much. Thank you. One question about this one. What was your reasoning to choose a 3mm drill instead of a bigger one (5, 10, 15mm) and get closer to the no bottom filter case?

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, the larger the bit, the more the tip is tapered, and then you'd run into the inner basket part with the drill bit tip, before piercing the basket with the outer radius of the drill bit.

    Awesome idea! I think it's important to point out that once you do this you must grind fine and you cannot use pre ground coffee anymore. For this reason I opted to purchase a non pressurized basket (and a good grinder) like the one you showed. That way if I need to use a coarser grind sometime I'm able to.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello AJ, you are definitely right! If you depressurize the filter, then you have to grind finer.
      I’d mainly recommend doing this, if you have extra baskets to experiment with, or don’t want to wait for a new non-pressurized one to arrive.

    the pressurized basket can often deliver more crema. for my dual-wall basket, i ended up grabbing an acetylene torch and burning the stuck grounds out. it mostly melte out the mess, and you can hear it and see it coming out from the openings. rinse and repeat about 3-4 times until you no longer hear the old grounds melting any longer. bye the way, if you don't clean out the junk then you will eventually destroy the pump.

We are using identical medium heat, and same water hardness, and same water volume, as we set from straight water flow.., and the newer 685 is never as good, and has never been as good. is it possible for you to cut the bottom of the basket ? i'm thinking of drilling the tiny hole, but i think i will get better result, cutting the hole bottom.. my pressurized basket has a metal screen, not like yours its rubber...

      @@TomsCoffeeCorner I tried and the coffee now comes with a very bright shallow crema on top. Tastes better than stock, very smooth. I think the crema texture is what needs tweaking now. I use Lavazza Rossa, temperature on High, water hardness Medium with the stock handle, except the black plastic from the inside (nipples) are removed. Any recommendations to get a better, thicker crema? I buy coffee from my local coffee shop, the owner grinds it freshly so what should I ask for next time?
      Thanks and have a good day!

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@deyoviC Well, the next step would be to get your own grinder so that you can grind on demand. Timing is paramount, since grounds lose their freshness quickly. Your local roaster will provide much better crema than Lavazza, since it is the CO2 escaping, which is creating the crema. On old supermarket beans, the CO2 has already escaped.

    A mask for drilling a small hole into a sheet metal? Sorry, glasses ok. Can make sense, gloves not so much. You don't wear gloves when handling power tools. But a dust protection mask? Really not nessecary. Even for the deburring afterwards this is overkill.
    You also have to consider that protection also disturbs and can interfere with your vision thus an accident is more likely to happen especially if the person is unskilled
