    Mine leaks round the sides at the group head 😭 and spins sometimes! Has any else experienced this? looking at the comparison between the naked and the original delonghi portafilter the ears/wings are slightly different. Could that be it?

    • @mjbartending

      I had the same issue with Ali's single shot basket (th-cam.com/video/6y_yJWqekVk/w-d-xo.html) and later the same leakage developed with the double shot one (two weeks after I made this video). That may have had to do with a defect in my machine. Check if your locking rams are still into place (see here th-cam.com/video/CmTZSin4gOY/w-d-xo.html )
      Worst cae scenario, which I couldn't test, is that the different ears of Ali's porta, damage the ramps in the delonghi's group head. Be careful.

      @@mjbartending Thanks, yes locking rams still in place thankfully and have defaulted back to non pressurised basket in the original but modified delonghi portafilter. I only had one good shot from the naked portafilter before it started leaking... And have only tried 2 or 3 times after before getting frustrated.

    The only downside I've noticed: it doesn't have any groove (crease) on the edges to facilitate the removal of the filter basket.
    Is it more difficult to remove the basket than the original?

    bought the bottomless from ali express, and in terms of taste (so far) I don't see the point of going through the hassle. will experiment more with the coarsens and the amount of coffee I put inside but in general the original (pressurized) is simpler , cleaner and the fake crema is just fine.

      The regular La Pavoni Europiccola double shot basket holds up to near 17 grams and the competition version up to 20 grams. In both cases, you will need to flatten the bulged rim to create a seal in your DeLonghi. 20g version here:

      Through the filter or form the group head? IF you get streams trough the filter then it's called 'channelling', which you can prevent/improve by better distribution (see my latest la pavoni update). If it splashes from the side, then there is probably a seal problem. Could be the portafilter's ears aren't thick enough to fully lock the gap between the filter and station closed.

      Based on it's stats I would have to conclude yes: you do get more precise grind adjustment out of the box. Tweaking is also made more easy by directly manipulating the grind wheel instead of having to add or remove washers underneath the cone. 20% larger reservoir which is good if you drink a lot, but bad if not since the beans will go stale quicker. All in all, a better choice imho.

    Hola, una consulta ? Tengo una maquina DEDICA de Delonghi y adquirí hace unos días un Portafiltro de café sin fondo de 51MM y al hacer el café resulta que sale super liquido, no sale cremoso , sale aguado, como que pasara el agua super facil por el café no obteiendo un resultado de calidad. Pero cuando vuelvo a utilizar el porta filtros original de la caferea si, sale todo normal. Cual puede ser el error ??

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hola Sebastian, el problema es que el filtro original forzará el espresso a través de un pequeño agujero solo, para 'fingir' un buen espresso. En verdad, el equilibrio de un tan espresso no está necesariamente bueno. Tienes que ajustar la fineza de tu café con tu molinillo hasta el shot viene correctamente de tu filtro sin fondo. Porque tu espresso actualmente es demasiado liquido, tienes que empezar moler tu café más fino. Puedes usar el tiempo tambien para juzgar/estimar la calidad: hacer un buen shot lleva cerca 20-30 segundos, de principio a fin.

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Andrew, you must mean sputtering? Chanelling is the main cause. Good coffee distribution is key. Repeatedly tap or shake your portafilter while filling it with coffee. Tap again when full. Then gently close around all the edges by pushing grinds in them with your finger and level the top. If you have leveller you can then use that for deep levelling. Then take your tamper and make sure it is clean: any old coffee stuck to the bottom can cause a surface channel. Tamp as horizontally as possible. Not to hard but also not too light: you must compress any non-visible deep channels. That's where the recommended 15kg tamp pressure comes from. For me, these rules make a big difference. I may still have the occasional small channels but mostly a nicely centered flow with almost no sputtering.

    • @clemensrausch23
      @clemensrausch23 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I actually have the same problem and its not chanelling at all. Its the portafilter itself, which leaks when the machine builds up pressure. I used the bottomless portafilter 4 months now and only extra rubber gaskets placed under the basket (for spacing so that it seals better) helped. However, I needed to change the gasket of the machine itself, 3 times now, as it broke using this portafilter. The portafilter itself even spins out of its locking position when it builds up pressure, I need to hold it during extraction. I am not sure if its only mine and if its an exception but all in all, I cannot recommend it, it made me much trubble and a lot of headache.
      Nice video howsoever! Love your content, keep it up!
      Cheers.

      @@clemensrausch23 an update also for @Andrew 666, with longer use I found that this portafilter can not handle the finer grinds. I tried getting a single shot out of various double shot baskets but the filter started to and kept leaking. On top of it, a plastic "locking ramp insert" became dislodged a few days ago so neither portafilters would lock anymore. Not sure if the aliexpress model caused this or whether it's due to normal wear and tear. Either way, my machine is now in repairs. I'll report back on the warranty handling. I will carefully try the aliexpress model one more time once my machine is back, to test whether it leaked because the seal ramp had already deteriorared prior.

      Thank you so much for the update! My machine began leaking as well around the portafilter (not only the aliexpress one, but also the original one did not work anymore). I inspected the gasket and it appeared to have a fine crack, leading to water dropping out at the side of the portafilters. However changing the gasket (5€ on Amazon) fixed the problem.
      I think the crack was caused by too much pressure and when the AliExpress portafilter spun out of the holding mechinism leading to mechanical force on the gasket.
      I think I will just go on with the modified bottomless original one, to keep me free from this mess!
      Thanks tho for answering!

      So great to hear! I have often heard of the Sage brand, sounds interesting if they have made the effort of offering bottomless.
      UPDATE: I recognize the oracle now, much praised intermediate model. With its 58mm/22g basket you will get a wholly different cup of coffee. For the fairest comparisson, calibrate your grind to get SINGLE shot with an unpressurized DOUBLE shot DeLonghi basket (approx 15g pre-extraction) .
      Then calibrate your grind to get a single shot out of the Sage with the same starting dose (15g).
      Then you will taste the absolute difference in technology.
      Finally, calibrate another shot from the Sage but with a full filterbasket (approx. 22g). Now you will taste the difference that those extra 7g of beans make: the difference in brew ratio.
      For now, I hope you can now get more out of your DeLonghi. Enjoy your experiments!

      There are many stores selling them, this is one of them (be sure to select the right model; 2 ears for ECP or 3 ears for Dedica, if I'm correct, please double check! )

    Does 53 mm portafiler fit with saeco poemia ?

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Zenos, I could only find a 54mm naked pirtafilter on aliexpress, with 3 locking points for breville models. Your machine really needs 53mm and 2 locking points. Furthermore, the poemia has been discontinued so third party manufacturers will most likely not tailor the locking points' thickness to fit that machine, rather only to fit newer models. So even if you find a current make 53mm naked portafilter, I doubt that it will fit.
      Putting a not-perfectly-fitting porta in your machine may cause damage. I had some issues with my naked porta and the machine is now in repairs. I will have to do some more testing when I get it back but these budget models may have some weak points that you can easily overload. My next vid will address this.
      Here's a good guide to your machine in general: wiki.wholelattelove.com/Saeco_Poemia

    I tried these baskets with pre ground coffee and tasted awful i dont know if it has to be freshly grinded specifically for those but there was a huge difference in taste.

      Compared to the DeLonghi factory (= pressurized baskets)? If yes, at the same grind setting?

    • @djtrets
      @djtrets 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but I have a spanish brand coffee machine cecotec cafelizzia haven’t tried it with freshly grinded coffee yet it might be the reason

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djtrets ah yes, if you switch from pressurized baskets to these ali express ones, you'll need to carefully fine tune your grind to the filter. Also when you switch coffees. Right now I'm calibrating a new HUGH competition basket to my set up, using coffee I've never tried before (a dutch brand Indonesian Java Jampit). I kind of knew at what finesse to start with based on experiene but after serval tries I'm still not there. It's always a discovery.

    • @djtrets
      @djtrets 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But you managed it to get good coffee maybe those baskets require freshly grinded coffee. What do you think?

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@djtrets yes, that is a very important requirement. The factory pressurized baskets can force a somehwat good coffee out of pregrind or old coffee, but with 'real' baskets you need fresher grinds. When you do get freshly ground coffee, and calibrate your set up well, the reward will be there in flavour, and more control over the result.

    Do you use any distance rings on the grinder?

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mean those thin spacers directly underneath the grind cone: yes. For good results with this Delonghi I had two 0.2mm rings installed.

    • @uribennun8335
      @uribennun8335 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mjbartending Interesting, because I've seen both what you're saying and someone saying he used none and got some pretty good coffee (th-cam.com/video/yjxCbB8eC0Q/w-d-xo.html&lc=UgywGYsJiyyni1iSYqR4AaABAg.9LrxjgVImKf9LzUNf7qGpZ&ab_channel=Te%26Gab%27sRetreat)
      guess there's no good answer and just trial and error

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@uribennun8335 I assume he told you in the comments? That'd be cool. The coffee itself can make a difference and his machine has three different temp settings I believe. As you say, it's all in trying to find what works for the individual set up and taste.
      Ps. From the graef factory the number of rings already installed can vary so if he did not open it up, he could even be grinding with 2 rings without knowing. I did see he did ye ole tie wrap around the steamwand nozzle trick, that's always good👌☕

    • @uribennun8335
      @uribennun8335 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mjbartending yeah absolutely, I guess it's possible he already had rings attached.. 2 is impossible, I tried grinding on finest setting with 2 rings, it ended up pushing ground coffee back up to container rather then down the nozzle, but maybe one ring.. I'll try with and without rings and update if you're interested

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@uribennun8335 yes sure! I too have clogging with 2x 0.2mm washers when finer than setting no. 5. A single 0.25mm washer ground too coarse for my delonghi so I stuck with 2x 0.2 and above setting 5. You could try 1x 0.2mm + 1x 0.25mm and see what that does at #5. I never tried.
