    Took the J-11 out again on my server and had a great the greatest flight I've ever had. The Chinese J-11 is one of my all time favorite red planes in DCS right next to the mig29. I got a new mic too, the sound had a small echo in the video I didn't know I didn't have it set up correctly. Anyway I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching and all your support.

    If you are interested in trying out the server: It's called "Growling Sidewinder Open Conflict" and you can find it if you are running the open beta version of DCS. The server runs a mission that is a mix of Air to Air, Air to Ground, and also has a naval warfare component, where you have to attack the enemy's Cargo/Oil Tankers that are guarded by their Air force and Naval surface ships. Almost all planes are available in the mission and even has helicopters if you'd like to fly those. The server doesn't have any crazy rules or weapon restrictions, are you free to play how you wish. You can also join the discord (link in video description) and use the comms in the voice channel to talk to other players in the server OR you can use SRS Radio if you prefer that. The server also allows Tacview Exports so you can review your flights and learn from mistakes etc. The Server is funded by Patreon so if you like it, Please consider donating so we can continue to keep it up and running. Thanks for much for watching and for all your support guys. You are all the best.

      Hi! Do you know how to enable open beta version? After last update i could choose from about 40 servers in Caucasus and now after 3 weeks or so about 15 are still visible. Never figured out what is the issue. Thank you for advice. BTW- this is one productive flight you have just performed!

    • @GrowlingSidewinder

      igorkratka haha thank you. I'm not sure how to do it on steam but I know if u are using standalone DCS u need to actually download the open beta version. That being said I think if u lost a bunch of server on the list its more likely that you need to force update ur DCS as ur DCS is no longer up to date with the servers and that's why u can't see them.

    I was looking over at the water in the F-18, talking over voice on Discord when he just screams, I quickly turn my head and he's no longer there, I literally shit my pants and dive towards the ground, thinking you're at least 15k away, as I didn't have any warning what-so-ever on my Data-link, then BOOM. Personally, I believe that Gov. officials are making money by selling out the freedoms of Americans that they were elected to protect, Scammers are getting their numbers from some place, and they aren't random. Wonderful vid. Yes, you're an ace with 5 kills. You do Sun Tzu (Art of War) good. I never flew on DCS but you give a good taste for it. It definitely looks like the closest Sim to the real thing - being furthest away from simple arcade. You use strategies in radar coverage, range, relative altitude and whether it's On of Off. It's clever how you've lost him in the valleys. Very instructive. Please keep this up and we want more from you!

Fantastic video and I am slowly working through all of your videos...please keep doing what you are doing.

    @thekardinal848 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Good video. I used it to understand the utter superiority that J11 and Flankers have in Blueflag. I have come to understand that people consider Datalink to be a massive advantage and this video helped showcase that. At least 2 of your kills had no idea you were even there. Being able to gain situational awareness and target without turning on your radar is great news. I realise that you did occasionally turn on your radar but it looks like most of the time you were nose cold. It does mean that fighting flankers is hard and trying to launch attacks on ground targets protected by a datalink equipped adversary is, well, hard to say the least. I find BlueFlag a little frustrating because of this but perhaps when the hornet gets datalink the balance will be a little closer. Keep up the good work and well done on those 6 kills.

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      thanks man, I agree datalink is a huge advantage there are ways to counter it tho, and simply knowing how to use ur radar goes a long way to warding off those EO bandits. as you will see them before they can sneak up on you. I agree tho its a huge boost for them.

The video was over 30 min long, catching ALL comms during this “engagement”, not the 5 min. Version they have posted in past! Just out of curiosity, after your first kill when you pull back into the mountain range, ideally would you have wanted to be lower than that or just at an even altitude with the top of the mountain?

  • @americanpatriot4227

    If I were a betting man, and I am, I would guess that the gaggle of 3 include 3 of your kills respawning, out to get some payback.
    I really appreciate the calm and rational decision - let 3 to 1 go and save the airframe.
    The saying still stands, there are old pilots and bold pilots, but very few Old & Bold Pilots. Very nice flight.....Lessons learned again.
    Just the simple comment, fighting US planes over water places you at a disadvantage is gold.
    Learning to change scan areas, switch from EO to Radar and back will take a while, but at least I know to do it. Thanks Again - Fun Video and as always learned a lot.

    Great flying Ace! I'd like to see what the opposition sees and doesn't see of your whereabouts. Can Nato AWACS even see you with your radar turned off and flying 200 feet above the water or in the mountains? Fighters must be frustrated trying to track you and get a positive lock on.

      depending on how high the awacs is, and how far, it can see me at any altitude, but in this situation both sides are using early warning radar, not AWACS so it forces you to use ur radar much more/better.

    ****HOLY CRAP....LONG READ ALERT BUT WARRANTED****
    I know this is 2 years go but since I've been watching your uploads for the last few weeks, I decided to go back and just randomly pic an older vid. It was this one...LOL. I saw the time of almost an hour and was like....damn....and LOL'd again. I was like WTF. It's 7am and I'm recovering from spinal surgery (my 4th in 4 years 12 screws 3 fusions yadda yadda...LOL) and I'm trying to learn more about DCS but more about the community. I follow you, Growling, and the Grim Reapers.....so I personally think I'm getting some nice training but if anything.....GREAT entertainment!
    I wasn't even lured in by your elusive "Yeah....right!" click bait title as I didn't even see it! But....I'm so EFFING glad I did sir! I learned so much about what the American fighters can and CAN'T do. By you flying the J-11, you actually gave me so many lessons and forced them, aka US fighters, to also "learn" me some things as well....haha. It was also very entertaining.....even more than Iron Eagle II! That's a joke as some may take it as an insult once looking up it's IMDB score (spoiler it's a 3.8 out of 10...not 5 lol) I was truly entertained by the actual dog fighting with commentary....I even caught myself doing some nail biting!
    Then came the TacView. LOVE IT! Not much I can say about it other than that. It just truly shows how your tactics worked and how they got lured in and owned! You sir must have cashed a few checks because your body knew when hold them and when to fold them so you would be around to deposit some communist pay. LOL. See what I did there? Took a movie and a song (which was turned into a movie too so I guess I took TWO movies)....errr....took 2 movies and made them relatable to your crazy ass awesome 6 FREAKING KILLS ace of a day!
    Thank you for all that you do for DCS fans....new and old....and TH-cam, as I know these vids take some time to edit.
    I'm unable to work since I can barely walk, but as soon as I can get a few dollars, I want a T-SHIRT sooooo baddddd!
    They look so good! OK OK......I'll stop rambling on and if you're still reading this.....God Bless you and thank you!

    Damn, this video was intense !
    I have few questions :
    1/ What is EO, is it something different from the radar ? And is it sneaky, like your enemy doesn't know he's targeted ?
    2/ What is TWS mode, and how to activate it ? I assume it's the same way as the Su-27, because the J-11 looks very similar.
    Thanks in advance, I hope you will keep up your great work. You're a good teacher, really.

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      thanks a lot man, means a lot to me to hear that from you guys.
      ok let me try and explain these best I can,
      1/the EO is the "electro optical" system, it is the round thing u find right on top the nose in front of the cockpit on Russian planes. unlike the radar that tracks radar signatures the EO tracks heat signatures. Therefore it does not give an RWR warning to the plane that it is being scanned or that it is being locked up. Unlike the radar, which emits massive amount of radiation which tells the RWR that is it being locked up. and can then warn the pilot. the only draw back to the EO system is that it has a significantly reduced range when compared to the radar. So if you can lock someone up with EO and then fire a fox2 or heat seeking missile at them, they will have zero warning until it hits them. (or they visually see the launch)
      2/ TWS mode is Track While Scan, so this mode does exactly what it sounds like, it TRACKS a target that you lock up but continues to scan for other targets, which can greatly help with situation awareness. the activation is the same as the Su-27 as you said I believe the default binding is "Ralt+i" I dont remember cuz I have it bound to my HOTAS. in contrast to the TWS mode we have RWS which is range while scan, this mode allows you to lock a target and I believe provides more info on the target but does not track other things happening in front which leads to u essentially being blind until you unlock the target. so its a matter of knowing when to use each mode as each provides its own advantage.
      These concepts are obvs a lot more complicated than just what I said, but its really all I can explain in text without doing a video on it which I might down the road. I hope those helped answer some aspects of your questions.
      Thanks again for the compliment man I appreciate it very much.

  • @shomz
    @shomz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    - 19:00 J-11 has an IFF system, why not use it to identify the target? When in EO mode, pressing the radar button turns on the IFF (but be careful, if you switch EO off without turning the IFF off, the IFF mode switches into a proper radar mode, meaning enemies' RWR will detect you)
    - Also, "HI" radar pulse frequency has nothing to do with target's altitude, but with target's aspect - "HI" provides better detection of hot targets, while "MED" gives you better detection of cold targets. Both offer a slighly increased range (maybe 25%) over the "ILV" mode (which combines the two). The altitude only depends on where you point your radar.

    The J-11 being a Chinese-built variation of the Su-27, would the avionics interface really still be in Russian? Or have the devs just not had time yet to introduce a proper Chinese "Bitching Betty"?
