    Drewski, I’m a viper crew chief in real life and also dabble a little in DCS. The guidance I’ve received from real F-16 pilots for softer landings is to land with some speed brake. With speed brakes out you can have your engine at a slightly higher rpm to help with flare and also it’ll spool up faster since it’s already at a higher rpm if you need to make small adjustments when touching down. Happy flying!

      How realistic do you think it is to land on a road like this? Wouldn't all sorts of stuff from the ground get sucked up into your engine damaging or destroying it?

    • @willcarpenter5777
      @willcarpenter5777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @@squidwardo7074 it’s incredibly unrealistic. Aircraft with low intakes would ingest rocks or other debris and ruin the engine. Some countries train to land aircraft on highways in case of emergency, but the roads are cleaned ahead of time. Aircraft like the A-10 with high mounted engines don’t have this problem as much. I can’t speak for other countries, but busy U.S. airfields are cleaned daily.

      @@raunavyadav9479 the base game comes with an Su-25T frogfoot, which is a Russian ground attacker. However, this plane lacks the main thing I enjoy in DCS, which is the ability to flip switches in the cockpit.
      It also comes with a TF-51D, which is a two seater training version of the P-51D Mustang. It is unarmed, but it does have a clicky cockpit.
      There are some mods available for free that will allow you to do a bit more though.
      You have the A-4 skyhawk, regarded as the best mod for DCS, clickable cockpit, loads of weapons. Very well developed.
      There is the T-45 twin seat training jet mod. The only weapons it has are training weapons (small bombs that drop a smoke charge when they impact, a2a missiles that are for training only and dont actually leave the aircraft). But it is 2 seat, so you can fly with a friend. It has modern avionics and carrier capability. Great plane to learn how to fly (you'll need to know how to do that before dropping warheads on foreheads)
      There are some more mods, but a lot of them depend on other modules that you have to pay for.
      I think the Hercules mod and UH-60 mod also work without any dependencies, but they are not combat aircraft, just transport. Still very fun though!
      Oh another thing. On standalone version (not steam version) you can try ANY paid module for free for 2 weeks. When those two weeks are up, you can try the module again for 2 weeks after half a year.
      This way, you can test out some planes and get a feel for which you like the most, before buying the planes.
      If you do try out multiple planes, try one after the other, not all at the same time!

    This is super cool, I'm gonna check out your other DCS videos as well. Quick question though, have you ever heard of IL-2 Sturmovik? It's among the most realistic flight sims out there, and it has a WW2 setting. There are basically no instructions though, and with earlier planes you have to learn how to manually control the airflow to the radiator among other things. Someone had to dig up an old manual on the ME262 just to learn how to turn it on without the engines blowing up (which is apparently a thing that could happen irl) which I think adds to the charm and draw of the game.

    • @SavannahBanana
      @SavannahBanana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But there are basically instructions on how to operate your plane in IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles... It's called the specifications tab on the map screen, where it shows you it's max limits, it's optimal operating limits, and even specific quirks and features of the plane. Also the startup procedure for most planes are completely automated, as there aren't really any binds for the switches you would need to flip for startup. The only thing you really need to worry about on startup are jet ignitions (me262), fuel mix, and prop pitch, whenever they need to be controlled manually. For air water and oil controls, all you need to reference is the specifications tab, and keep the cooling within those limits described there with the corresponding control and you won't have any problems.

    • @SavannahBanana
      @SavannahBanana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@webweaver3015 though the one thing DCS doesn't have is the crazy wing to wing dogfighting that you get from the WWI flying circus modules. Plus in IL2 Great Battles there is a much more extensive and varied selection of WWII planes, 56 to 9 (which is still baby numbers compared to IL2 1946's 388 aircraft), with damage models built for gunfighting, and being far more inviting to potential new sim pilots with simplification options.
      Then again, I'm pretty biased towards gameplay centered around true dogfighting and not press button to win at little triangles on a tiny screen. ;P

    It doesn’t take much for a jet to be disabled. My grandpa worked on the f-105 and he talked about how much maintenance was involved just after test flights and it was a shit ton. Every little rivet had to be inspected, gauges, fuel injectors which are 1,000 times more complicated than a cars, and so much more. These jets weren’t even close to as fast as modern jets. I think he said the f-105 maxed out at like 1,500 miles per hour, it could be more or less I can’t really remember, but either way that’s above Mach 1.

    • @RW-zn8vy
      @RW-zn8vy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well back then yea, but today the aircraft are built different. Also the F105 is faster than the panther and almost as fast as the raptor

    • @devinmounce1838
      @devinmounce1838 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RW-zn8vy nahh maintenance on modern jets is much worse. They pump nitrogen into their fuel injectors so you don’t run out of gas flying upside down or side ways. Literally the fuel has to be pumped in every different direction for all the different maneuvers made. That’s just one part of the internals. Think about how hot an engine gets, then you add the cold air in the atmosphere being blown in through the intake and that can be catastrophic if it’s not regularly inspected. When metal heats and then rapidly cool it gets hard and no longer bends, it can make it very brittle. Titanium is already a pretty hard metal, which isn’t always a good thing, that’s why they use a titanium/aluminum alloy, because aluminum is more flexible under high pressures. My grandpa said for every hour of flight in an f16 there was like 18 hours of maintenance, again this is second hand accounts from stories a while ago so it could be more or less. My point is the F-18 and F-22 are much more advanced jets and require much more work to be flight ready.
