I live in Northern Michigan - USA (not to be confused with other possible Michigans). One day I was walking along a dirt road in Leelanau county when I heard a strange, almost hauntingly mellifluous sound. I looked up and what should my wondering eyes behold but an Avro Vulcan - it's Olympus engines drowning out the red-winged blackbirds with stunning British decibels and filling the sky with British Auditory Splendor. Outwith airshows and documentaries, my enduring memory of the Vulcan was being a five year-old living in the north of Scotland. The distillery I lived at, the chimney, was used as a bombing run target at low-level. One particular day, and I can still see it, the Vulcan passed so low and right over my house I could clearly make out all the details of the underside still in its white livery. Have to say, at the time, my fave aircraft was the Vulcan's sibling, the Schakleton which had been moved to Lossiemouth.

As of 2001, the longest bombing mission ever was flown by the B-2 bomber, Spirit of America, when it flew continuously from it's home base in Missouri to Afghanistan, out of Afghanistan, then back in for another bombing mission, then finally touching down in Diego Garcia after 44 hours and 18 minutes airborne. With it's engines still running, it was refueled, oiled up, the crew was swapped and it flew back to Missouri. It was a total of 70 hours from engine startup to shutdown.
Also they should really add the Fullback. It would be closest thing to a bomber they could get without having to figure out how to do more than 2 engines and 2 crew.

The US airforce still regularly carries out missions like that with b-52, b-1, and b-2 bombers. The b-2 imparticular can only be operated out of a base in the very middle of the US so every mission it carries out is more than a 10,000 mile round trip

Maybe there is some confusion about longest and longest distance the Vulcan cruises at a slightly higher speed 570 v 510 I think , the Vulcan had a much much higher climb rate so missions that the B52 would do would naturally take longer to do , I love the B52 anything that can wipe out 2k by 10km with its ordnance is one hell of a weapon and it’s believed to be the only aircraft to clock up 100 years of service but the v bomber is absolutely beautiful

I've hated the legacy Hornets for years. Until I started working on them. Found out what they are for, what they do, and how good they are at their jobs. Now they are going away and it makes me sad. A fighter I've grown to love, and to know that within a year, I will probably never work on them again. Maybe it's how Tomcat guys felt.

Honestly, I've never asked my uncle what he's thought of the F-18 being retired.
He was a USMC F/A-18 Hornet and Superhornet Aviation Electrician for 22 years. Showed me an F-18 when I first went to San Diego, California, for the Navy. What I found with the F-18 is that it is not a big plane. On the ground, I actually could look into the cockpit by stretching a bit.

I effing love the Vulcan, she was an absolutely stunning looking lady and her Olympus engines are legendary (obviously from the Concorde). When XH-558 was put back into the air through grants and donations (which I donated some money to as well), she came to my local air show (Clacton air show) every year until she had to retire again due to structural restrictions.
We had the BBMF, Typhoons, Mig-15's, Red Arrows..... which are all amazing..... but EVERYONE WANTED TO SEE XH-558 as she was the STAR of the show.

Not sure Maggie “put them through it” - the mission was the idea of the Brass Hats at the RAF because they felt they had to prove they could contribute something to the Falklands effort lest the Royal Navy get all the credit.
Results not impressive - one crater on the runway for millions of gallons of aviation fuel, one entire stick didn’t explode because they weren’t fused correctly by the artificers. Shrikes didn’t hit anything.

Some rules of "Ferry" flying I have picked up from pilots: Bring more piddle packs than you think you need. Careful where you put your food, it will either get cooked or freeze. Don't be the guy that cannot AR. Youngest pilot in the flight is responsible for being armed to the teeth with funny jokes and stories. Bring a extra seat cushion. When you land a Lt. will be there with a cold beer, on the flight line or something is really wrong! If you do land at a stop over base, write NOTHING up as a PRD until you get to your final destination, that jet is CODE 1, even if only half the lights in the cockpit work and the TGP is literally giving you the middle finger.
Cap you should call these kinds of missions Joint Ops! Great to see missions that push the guys! You are working your way up to a real combat missions time limit (depends on aircraft and theater of operations).

fyi on B-2 missions they're typically direct from Whitman to CENTCOM target, then proceed to land at Diego Garcia. Crew gets off to lounge about for a day+, preceding beached crew flies jet back to Whitman. They were doing that for years and untold $$$. Some crazy number of aerial refuelings throughout.
