I think the stock market gurus have a good way of putting it: Get out of the market at the point you would never get in. I apply that advice to all kinds of situations.

Good afternoon, doctor. I have a question. Is it wrong to want to become a doctor for the prestige factor? I’m an undergraduate chemistry student whom aspires to do a PhD in pharmacology and an MBA in marketing. I’m somewhat motivated by prestige, but also by a genuine interest in the subject.

I wouldn’t recommend doing anything, especially medicine, for the prestige factor. Becoming a doctor is such a long path, and in order to get through the training and to have a sincerely rewarding career that 1. You enjoy, and 2. Benefits your patients, it’s crucial that you’re all-in for the heart of what you’re doing and not for external rewards of the path. If the external rewards are the driving factor, you’ll get tired of what you’re doing pretty quickly, and you won’t be helping your patients.
