      Wait, where does it say that? I couldn't find it in the Dossier. It would make sense, but according to my calculations, he could be as young as 43. He studied under the Greybeards for ten years (according to his dialogue), then joined the legion to fight in the Great War in probably 173 when reinforcements from Skyrim bolstered the Imperial City. That's 38 years. If he was called by the Greybeards between the ages of 5 and 13, that gives his current age as anywhere from 43-51.

    I always assumed that there was going to be some kind of Ragnarok type event in the world of Elder Scrolls and that Sovengarde was supposed to be their version of Valhalla. It makes sense to me considering how much of Skyrim is based off of Norse mythology and Scandinavia in general. And this "Final battle" bit of removed dialogue kind of reinforces my theory.

    • @deadlordification
      @deadlordification 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      As a matter of fact, Khajit lore states that there IS in fact a Ragnarok type event coming on and where the cat equivalent of Kyne gathers all of the souls of the dead at the end of times for some sort of cat-based ragnarok
      "Khenarthi carries the souls of dead Khajiit to Azurah for judgment, and is also her messenger. At the end of time, it is her clarion call that will summon the eternal united spirit of all Khajiit to defend creation."
      It's chronologically the first religion, so its the most accurate- if cat based
      Whats more likely that is that shes doing that not just for the nords, but for the khajit as well. And the Shor/Lorkhan is the guy housing/chilling with the nord souls in the meanwhile

    • @rorikjrclaybourne

    • @RedmarKerkhof
      @RedmarKerkhof 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'd say it's more than "bases off" of Norse mythology. It's just copy pasted with some detailed switched up and some letters rearranged. Like those recolour OC's on deviantart. "No guys it's not Thor, it's my very own original character called Shor. Something else entirely, really."

    • @deadlordification
      @deadlordification 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@RedmarKerkhof Nah, Shor would be Odin in this case. Kyne would be the closest one to Thor, and even then she'd also have the portfolio of other irl gods.
      While you're right that the beginning and end of Norse and Nord stuff is pretty much the same, all the stuff in the middle is different- they have different "myths", stories and attitudes

    • @jonmartin444
      @jonmartin444 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Check out Fudgemuppet's channel for deep dives into all this, a lot of this lore is actually pretty well expanded upon in Skyrim, ESO, and in-game texts going as far back as Morrowind. The end of one Kalpa bleeds into the start of the next, and the final battle between Shor/Lorkhan and Auriel/Akatosh mirrors the battle in the Dawn Era between those two

      It would take him so long to play through Oblivion to obtain the experience and knowledge needed in order to make the type of content that would do it justice. I think he probably doesnt want to half ass anything. He seems to have alot of knowledge on Skyrim. Im sure much of it is due to him reading the reddit boards and seeing other videos possibly, but we can tell he has put in quite alot of game time into Skyrim over the years and he is passionate about the game and its lore. Its easier to make videos about a subject youre passionate about than it is to make yourself passionate about a video you want to put out. Im assuming he wants top notch content coming from his channel and he may feel that he would not do the game, or his fans, any justice by creating them. But this is just mere speculation.

    I feel like the “follow Shor into the final battle” is a Viking reference. Valhalla is where fallen warriors go when they die so they can be Odin’s army at Ragnarok. I don’t know how that fits into Skyrim lore, but it lines up with a lot of the other Viking references you find in Skyrim.

    • @MasterDoctorBenji
      @MasterDoctorBenji 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It does line up, at the end of the kelper cycle as the world rests the start of the new begins. They blend together. At the start of every cycle (as far as we know), the elven gods and the old elner fey war with the betrayer and his wandering elner fey. This is Akatosh/Aur-riel versus Shor/Lorkhan. The elves always win and kill Shor.
      So the Nords of this cycle will likely replace the wandering elner fey at the start of the next cycle and fight the thalmor. Maybe even the aldmeri dominion.
      There is even evidence Nords came from a previous cycle. We know the Red Guards did. The Nords may have been the creatures that destroyed the dregs with the help of Mehrunes Dagon, which happened in the dawn era. So the end of the last cycle.

      Einherjar are what the members of Odin's army are called. I know its not important just thought I'd mention. I was getting the exact same vibes from it, Nords in Sovengard follow Shor into the final battle, Einherjar in Valhalla follow Odin into Ragnorok (obviously there's more to it but the general gist is there)

    • @jonmartin444

      I don't know why Nate thought this battle was mysterious, plenty of lore sources talk about how Shor is gathering an army of followers to battle with Auriel (Akatosh), Trinimac, and other Elven gods at the end of this kalpa / start of the next one

      @@suryanshsoni8809 Yes. In Oblivion, many Nords reference wanting to go to Sovngarde, but not being able to because they're just a steward or another profession that wouldn't normally allow them to die valiantly in combat. Only Nords who are felled in combat go to Sovngarde; it's why even High King Torygg was sent to Sovngarde as he died in mutual combat despite not being a particularly skilled fighter. I don't think it's ever really explicitly stated as to where their souls go to if not to Sovngarde or what would happen if a Nord who was a valiant warrior were assassinated instead of being defeated in direct combat.
      Surely they know about the kalpas in the afterlife so that's probably what he was referencing.

It kept bouncing off like something was in the way and then it hit us: Sam is just a disguise. Sanguine has horns. The only reason I know of it is because of the option in the graybeards council between Ulfric and Tulius. In this your given the option to punish Ulfric and make him pay the empire for his crimes or let him go, Ulfric heavily disputes this though, and denies that it was a massacre. Hey Nate, here's three tiny details I learned very recently.
    First off, if you progress far enough through the civil war questline on the Imperial side, if you heal Ulfric when you're supposed to kill him, he'll die anyway. This could be a bug, or just a failsafe, either way it's pretty funny to watch happen.
    Second up, also to do with healing, when you first enter Jorrvaskr, you'll always see the fight between Nada and Athir. Well if you heal on of them during the fight, they'll turn hostile, but none of the other companions do either. And, you don't get a bounty for it either.
    Finally, if you're unlucky when Vilkas tests you when you join the Companions and Farkas is there, the moment Vilkas turns hostile, Farkas will too. When this happened, I had Teldryn Sero with me, who repeatedly attacked Vilkas by Dragonsreach while I was talking to Armen about his sword.
    That's all I've got. If you ever decide to do another 10 tiny details for Skyrim, I hope you use these.

    a little "tiny" detail i haven't yet seen (unless i somehow skipped it) is the following:
    - at the beginning, when you're asked to go to Bleak Falls Barrow, if instead one goes to Whiterun (we know that Farengar gives us the quest to retrieve the dragon stone later used by Delphine to check out the dragon burials and somehow always ended up with the "oh, this stone?" response 'cos we already had it) but, if you go to Whiterun in order to, say, pick up a couple useful spells before entering the dungeon, Delphine can be seen there, talking to Farengar who refers to her as his "associate". Delphine is using her leather gear and (unlike when going with the Dragonborn to check out the tombs) she's even using a hood and participates in the dialogue. If you ask in the Sleeping Giant Inn for her (I stopped there omw to BFB to sell a few things), the innkeeper will respond with something along the lines of "she's out, she's the owner, she doesn't need to explain herself" or something like that.
    It was quite surprising for me, I guess because it was my 1st time on legendary difficulty and thus I wanted to be better prepared for the bandits and draugr, to find her there and even more so, to see she actually interacts with you, Farengar and of course, tying up the pieces (she later tells you that she got the locations from the tablet, but I had never before seen the two characters and the dragonborn interact like that). So, despite the thousands of hours put into it, I had never seen that! This game is so old by now and like any good Beatles album, it still finds way to surprise you.
    Thought I'd share it in case I (or you, or anyone) had missed it. Thanks =)

There's also the theory that the Dragonborn is Shor, which is why we can sit on his throne, which lends itself to the whole following Shor to the final battle thing. The elder scrolls uses a LOT of symbolism and stories from the real world, and many of the most common stories we have come from the Proto-Indo-European line. The idea of a battle at the end AND begining of the world is almost universal in the real world and a big part of that is the idea of a hero beating a serpent/dragon. HOWEVER, the story a hero defeating a serpent/dragon is common as hell and doesn't always mean a "final battle" (Zeus kills a serpent beast at the start of the known world, but Apollo and Hercules also kill dragons/serpents and it's not nearly as big a deal) it makes sense to me that the dragon born beating a dragon boss is kinda smaller than expected because it's not ACTUALLY the big world change, but a kind of reaction story within a larger story

    The final battle kind of sounds like Ragnarock from Norse mythology, which seems like a fitting reference. In Norse mythology, Ragnarock symbolizes an apocalyptic end of the nine realms where a bunch of crazy stuff happens, mainly the warriors of Valhalla going into a final battle with the forces of evil. With the Nords of Skyrim and the ethereal afterlife of Sovenguard, we already know that the Elder Scrolls has a good amount of it's inspiration pulled from Norse mythology, but there are less noticeable things too, like the fact that there are nine provinces in Tamriel, a reference to the nine realms in Norse mythology. Now an important thing to note about Ragnarock, is that in the myths, despite Ragnarock supposedly being the end of the world, some of the gods, and other mythical creatures DO survive, and go on to start the nine realms anew. And this new version of the nine realms will eventually have its own Ragnarock, starting the process all over again. That sounds really similar to the Kalpa cycle of Nirn, even more so with that line about the Nords of Sovenguard joining Shor to fight a final battle at the end of time, or this worlds Kalpa cycle. In conclusion, I believe that line about fighting a final battle is a reference to Skyrim's own version of Ragnarock that takes place at the end of each Kalpa cycle

    • @Steve_the_Radroach
      @Steve_the_Radroach 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Small correction: Firstly; the forces of Asgadr does not do battle with the forces of evil, but the forces of Chaos. In Norse mythology there is no clear seperation between a good and a bad side, rather the gods symbolize order and civilization, while the giants represent chaos and the wilderness of nature. The eternal struggle between the gods and the giants is more akin to the feud between two families, rather than a grand war between good and evil. In fact, the gods are often times shown as being flawed and in some ways no better than the giants, with a good example being Thor almost letting the world end to fuel his own vanity, when he tries to catch Jömungandr. Secondly, Ragnarökr is not an apocalypse in the traditional western understanding, it is the natural culmination of a longlasting conflict between two feuding kins. Ragnarökr isn't even shown as a wholly terrible event, brought on by the forces of chaos, but rather an inevitable catastrophy brought on partly due to the vanity and arrogance of the gods, and the desire of revenge harboured by the giants ever since Ymir was slain by Odin and his brothers. And finally, Ragnarökr isn't even the end, since the gods reunite after their deaths (even Baldr is resurrected and reunited with his family), and two of Thor's sons (Magni and Modi) take on the mantle of thundergods.

      @@Steve_the_Radroach Small correction to your correction: Firstly, I am completely aware that the Giants and other such creatures are not inherently evil, but for the sake of not having to try and fully explain the essence of the chaos that is Ragnarock, I chose to simplify it in a way that people who aren't familiar with norse mythology might understand. And in the quote from the video, the Nords of Sovengaurd ARE fighting the forces of evil, so it was an apt comparison to make. Secondly, I don't know what part of the west YOUR from, but where I'M from thousands to millions of people dying in a semi magical battle, with a wolf eating the sun and moon, and a bunch of other crazy shit, would in fact, be classified as an apocalyptic event. It is even expressly called an apocalypse in several versions of the myths. And did you not read the part where I explicitly state that despite being described as the literal end of the world, that people DO IN FACT survive? Because I definitely said that. And finally, there are hundreds of variations of Norse mythology, as with any big mythology like the Greeks, Egyptians, Aztecs, etc. No one myth is told exactly the same, and there will always be different variations. I've been studying Mythology for nearly 7 years now, and while granted I'm more familiar with the Greek Myths than the Norse ones, I'm still pretty well versed. Given that there are so many different ways the myths are told, it's pretty much pointless to even argue about it on the internet because both people are likely just reciting the version they heard, and are technically both correct, but since you went out of your way to be a nit picking, holier than thou lore nerd, and I enjoy arguing about stupid shit on the internet, I've decided I'll indulge you by typing this response.

      @@Steve_the_Radroach It would be wrong to interpret Ragnarok as merely the conclusion of a feud considering its hermeneutic elements. Additionally, attributing an eschatology to Ragnarok is more than adequate, considering that its name means "twilight of the gods," indicating the nadir of the aesir, the forces of order, light, and the sky. Presumably, the collapse of the heroic forces of the sky to the elemental forces of the earth would produce an earthly life devoid of consecration, honor, and piety, which seems rather apocalyptic to me considering these values were sacrosanct in medieval Scandinavia.
      Additionally, we have to consider its similarity to other eschatological myths and how they relate to traditional metaphysics. It's pretty evident from the texts, Voluspa for example, that Ragnarok is cyclical, just like the eschaton in many other religions. In the Hindu tradition, the world is destroyed by a great flood at the end of every kalpa before it is renewed. Likewise, in the Edda, the world is covered in waters before the re-emergence of the surviving aesir. The parallels to the Christian diluvial myth are obvious. Many other traditions, including the ancient Aztec tradition, speak of a similar apocalyptic flood. In the Hellenic tradition, the myth of the lost city of Atlantis and the race of Atlanteans has a similar meaning -- there was a primordial order that was destroyed in a great flood due to the rise of chaos and immorality -- its survivors migrated out and reached new lands, founding new civilizations in a "new cycle" if you will.
      Now, let's discuss Traditional metaphysics. All of these myths relate to the traditional idea of the worldly cycle. Since time is a created limitation of the cosmos, beings on Earth experience life in small, limited episodes. However, these small episodes cannot reveal all possibilities that are sensible completely to those spiritual beings outside of time. The cosmos, being a reflection of immaterial forms, must manifest every possible configuration, but it is delimited by time, so it thus undergoes a cycle. This idea of the opposition of time to that which is beyond time can be expressed by the idiom "time is a flat circle." In limitation, we experience a series of events and creations. Without limitation, we see all possible events and creations at once.
      Beyond time, the beginning and the end of the world are united as contrarieties. Inside of time, they proceed along as a series. The Buddhists called this cyclical reality samsara, identifying change in the world, and changelessness in the unconditioned. The platonists, hermeticsts, hindus, and other non-dualists saw the world as an imperfect reflection of forms that pre-exist and determine it. If you could zoom out and see all the forms at once, there would be no cycles. It would be like a spreadsheet with the new earth and Ragnarok juxtaposed at once. Basically, almost every tradition admitted to the law of cosmic cycles, and consequently, to such a thing as an apocalypse or destruction at the end of the cycle: Order must give in to chaos in the world, which must then give back into order, to reflect the balanced contrariety that exists in the immaterial realm of forms. The final age, the Hindu Kali Yuga, Hesiod's iron age, or in the Edda, the age of the wolf (Fenrir) or the age of the battleaxe, bears every sign of apocalyptic times. It would be utterly wrong to say it isn't a form of eschatology. The sky has always been connected with the supreme principle. Light (knowledge,) life (heat/being,) and transcendence of material limitations (angels, birds, etc.) This connection is especially apparent when we consider how the Indo-European god of the sky, Dyeus Pater, who was the supreme god of the pantheon, became Zeus, Wotan/Odin, Jupiter, and Dyaus. The aesir are also connected with light, being, order, and transcendence/overcoming. Their downfall is also the downfall of the supreme forces, which by any definition, is apocalyptic.

      @@arikira5492 Ok, I seem to have conveyed the entirely wrong message. I'm not trying to do a "holier than thou" thing here. Although I'd agree with you that the cataclysm that is Ragnarökr isn't excactly a peaceful event (understatement of the year) I don't ever recall the word apocalypse or any such being used in the myths I have read pertaining to the event. I'm sure this is most likely a misunderstanding being brought on by the two of us having read different parts of the mythos that (unsurprisingly) isn't consistent all the time. I'd actually like to know in what capacity you have been studying mythology (please note, I'm not trying to sound condescending or disingenuous here, I mean no offence what so ever).

    • @ClamantesDaemonium
      @ClamantesDaemonium ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Having just looked the subject up, I have to agree. There's a toppled wall, and the dragons themselves were (as far as I understand) the Britons and the Saxons, in which one army nearly wiped out the other but was eventually driven back and out, much as both the Nords and the Falmer were probably hoping of each other and fits nicely with the theme of the valley itself being a refuge.

    • @zeeseabreeze611
      @zeeseabreeze611 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ClamantesDaemonium It also follows with the myth as there is a ruined tower in the middle of the lake. The king was trying to build a tower, which kept collapsing. The reason that Merlin was brought to the king in the first place was because the king was told that the tower would continue to collapse until the mortar was mixed with the blood from a child whose parent was a demon. Merlin was supposedly the child of a demon who seduced a human woman. So, all of that to say that I believe that the tower in the middle of the lake represents the tower that the king was building that kept collapsing.
