    Vibrato will occur naturally, if the body is taught to open with a passive, reflexive, inhale. If you find yourself unable to produce vibrato, it is undoubtedly the result of excessive tension in the throat or body. This video will help you to eliminate that tension.

  • @ericarceneaux
    @ericarceneaux  17 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    The whole purpose of the breathing exercises that I give you is to train your body to NATURALLY take the breath in fully and deeply - without you having to think about it or "make" it happen. Now that we've gotten that covered, here's a checklist of common issues to watch out for that may cause throat tension. 1) Don't tighten your abs at all when you sing. The idea of tightening the stomach to support the voice is a piece of common knowledge that is commonly wrong! (part 2)

    Part 3 is coming...BUT... what I try to make clear in the first two videos is this: When they body is open, and the throat is free, vibrato will happen on its own - naturally. I don't want you guys to fake a vibrato sound. What I'm doing with these videos is helping you to develop a free and natural vibrato, by taking pressure off of the throat.

    2) Are you pulling your chest voice up to reach higher pitches? If you find yourself getting louder with your throat tightening up on high notes, then you certainly are pulling. Allow your voice to cross from one register to the next. Remember, you should be able to sing throughout your entire range without having to increase your volume - yelling is never ok (I'll go into more detail on this in a future video). (part 3)

    Eric, when I use to sing, I use to struggle at every single level, especially where breathing is concerned, but now, the first session I done of this, I immediatly felt a greater improvement in my vocal tone and with my breathing. 3rd time I commented now cuz ur great, which I normally don't do. Its cuz ur a great teacher and ur voice proves it, its great to hear you sing. Thanks for ur kindness and time; you give to those that cannot afford one to one vocal sessions.

    One classic scenario that I see time and time again: An SLS student, trained in a method like Brett's, will get up on stage to do a performance. This student will choose and R&B or a pop song by (Whitney, Christins, or Celine), and attempt to belt. And it will sound strained and flat. WHY? (part 3)

    This is genuinely the best advice. He speaks the truth, listen and learn from what he says because before I tried this, i was trying to force it but after this, it really does spontaneously appear, its like it comes out when its needed!

  • @ericarceneaux
    @ericarceneaux  16 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, it is one of the distinguishing components. It's basically modified Hatha yoga. In this specific case, the goal is for vibrato to result naturally as the body opens. The throat follows when the torso and pelvis open. Of course, you still need to train the vocal folds themselves with daily vocalization.

    The third installment is coming soon. As for a DVD... I have had numerous offers from producers and publishers who want to support me in doing a DVD series. Breath control is everything and once you got it you got mixed voice. It takes time and dedication. I started with your videos about 2-3 months ago and also with a course. I did it everyday with 2-3 hours. I figured out glottal stops which is how I found mix and then diaphragm breathing made so much sense lol. You open and close your glottal for vibrato. I'm now doing vibrato almost on every note I do in my exercises and full phonation is mix!

    vibrato is not some isolated facet of singing that can be taught by itself(though it can certainly be faked). A free vibrato occurs naturally when the throat is relaxed and the breath support is consistent. These techniques will aid in the overall performance of the voice, but also help to lay the groundwork for enhancing a free, healthy, vibrato.

    the moving between two notes in a back and forth movement is called a trill. This is done purposefully by a singer when specified to do so by a composer using the symbol of a trill in music.

  • @ericarceneaux
    @ericarceneaux  17 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'll be doing an in depth video on this very soon, but here's the simple short answer: When singing, if the throat is tight, not enough air is allowed to pass through the big opening of the throat cavity, so the sound ends up being redirected towards your nasal cavity. The result is a nasal sound. (part1)

    By achieving expansion with the intercostal muscles, hips, and low back, the abdomen will surely follow. Often times, singers focus way too much on the abdominal breath. Yes, there should be a felt sense of inner expansion in the abdominal region, but it doesn't need to be emphasized as much as it usually is. The entire torso needs to expand - including even the upper chest.

  • @ericarceneaux
    @ericarceneaux  17 ปีที่แล้ว

    Indeed, the stomach should not be shaking at all; The stomach should never be locked, or tightened - this almost immediately will trigger tension in the throat area. Try consciously forcing your stomach to relax while singing. Remember, breath support has nothing to do with pushing air out... Instead, you are holding air pressure back with the body so that the throat can relax. This can best be achieved with a slight contraction at the lower back and hips.

    very sound advice and coaching no pun intended.
    It seems to me that there are two types of vibrato. The one when the singer actually sings back and forth between two notes, and the "Natural" vibrato, where nothing moves at all, and the cycle is a natural occurrence of free air flow.

    Squeezing may give you a temporary boost of power, but ultimately it can lead to a myriad of vocal disorders. Remember guys: Support is not about pushing breath out; It's about holding breath pressure back, so that the vocal folds can move freely. Healthy breath support is a reflexive contraction of the muscles at the hips, low back, and low abs (groin area).

    So the key to getting rid of an overly nasal sound is to relax the throat. The possible root causes of a tight throat are many, and I will cover most of the common ones in an upcoming video. In the meantime, all of the videos posted so far should aid you in relaxing your throat, and alleviating a nasal tone. (part 2)

  • @ericarceneaux
    @ericarceneaux  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Guys, please take note: There is no single magical vibrato exercise! Vibrato will result spontaneously, when the breath flow is steady and the throat relaxed. These exercises help to achieve that result. Be more quick to listen and less quick to criticize. "youtube culture" is one that encourages us to criticize first, and think later - but let us please pause and think before we post our comments. hmmm....

    Were they just wrong? The short answer is yes. Many of my clients are referred to me my doctors for vocal rehabilitation. I can honestly say that the majority of them have been taught this stomach flexing technique - much to their detriment. When the stomach is flexed, the throat instinctively closes. Squeezing the stomach is an antiquated technique that is not taught today by successful professional voice teachers.

    A good exercise for getting rid of nasality is to transition from ng to an open vowel - ng-ah. To do this, the back of the tongue comes away from the soft pallet and the velar port opens. Also try holding the nose when producing the ah - it shouldn't be effected, as there should be no breath escape through the nose...

    If you're not used to stretching, then the soreness is completely normal. It should go away with daily practice. Be gentle with your body though. Ease yourself into the stretches. Only go as far as you can without excessive discomfort.
