@TheSubwaysurfer But there is a certain amount of bravery required of us, as artist... as people. It's important that we not let fear of critique hold us back from living our lives and pursuing our passions. It can be easier said than done, but the payoff for being true to yourself is so friggin worth it.

hey you just described me with the last type of people you described. i used to take vocal lessons when i was 14,right after i was bullied for 8 years straight very harshly was made fun of everything i did and was hit and punched by people all the time+ was abused by my family physically and emotionally .. and i couldnt sing in front of my vocal teacher. the worst thing was that he eventually told me he's not a therapist and that he's exhusted by me. i felt like no one understood me.
i wanna tell you a good way to deal with people like me is to be very very patient with them and let them know you will never ever judge them when they sing,do not pressure them it is harder for them i know its frustrating but honestly that frustration of yours feel way better than the shame they feel. they usually went through traumas. i unfortunately stopped the vocal lessons cause i felt so ashamed and misunderstood and ever since then completely gave up singing.
i wanna go back to it but am scared ill shame myself again in front of a vocal teacher who does not understand me.. :/
i know these people are hard to handle with. but think of them as little babies(because they let their inner children out when they fear) ,you would hug a baby you would be patient with a baby you would comfort and understand a baby, this is how you should act with them and this will help both of you.
    enjoyed watching this video thankyou.

i sympathize with you. but don't expect anything from your surrounding. it's time to go face your fears, and let go all of them 1 by 1. in psychology, all their fears and trauma they had, fundamentally created by themselves. they give their power of free will to their parents, friends, teachers and friends to define who they are. it's time for transcending , growing up facing life and know you yourself create your own reality. and be free.

@EricArceneaux I agree. My vocal coach tells me all the time, "guess what?, you'll eventually HAVE TO SING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE!!!" It's so BASIC , but we sometimes forget as BEGINNING singers that this is something we will be doing publicly and it will be evaluated on some level, by the listeners. The world has no shortage of "haters" so we have to learn to brush em off and keep vocalizing. Thanks for responding.

That third group with family trauma is suffering from narcissistic parenting. They are suffering from ptsd. My parents sucked, told me I could sing and shushed me at family events. I never got vocal , dance, guitar , piano lessons. Be patient with those people. I wonder if there is a instructor guide for narcissistic abuse for teachers of any field. Love the video! So motivating!

I'm scared to sing whenever's there's people within a 200ft radius. If I do sing, it's quietly to myself, in my room or in the shower. I wan't to see if I can get out of my comfort zone though. I'm not trying to become a great singer but, be able to sing at least.

Many gifted persons (singers, dancers, athletes, etc) do not want to believe their skill can be a learned behavior.
They feel that if others can learn to do what they do,it makes their natural talent less special.
What makes talent special is not just what you have, but HOW you use it.

Yeah, Type 3 here... and you're absolutely right. Almost four decades after being laughed at in school for singing, I finally screwed up the courage to take lessons. A lot of my lessons were therapy sessions. (And I'm in therapy, too.) The first session I could barely hum along to basic warmups without damn near crying in a panic. After six months I could sing in front of my teacher, and could react productively to feedback. The last lesson before the pandemic shutdown, I was surprised by a substitute coach who asked, "What song are we doing?" I told her. "Oh, cool! My dad loves that song!" Ouch. Immediately nervous. Then I sang a bit for her, and she actually winced. Really set me back. My usual teacher was so wonderful and kind. Can't wait to get back to in-person lessons and regain some courage. Eventually, I'd love to have the courage to sing in front of my girlfriend. That'll be the big test. (She's a former choir director, guh...)
Loving your videos and your perspective, sir! It's super encouraging, and is getting me to stick with a daily practice and have realistic expectations. Thank you!

I'm in the third group, but not quite the way you explained it. My parents (my dad in particular) have always told me that I sing pretty well, and I used to sing all the time when I was younger. But as I got older for some reason I stopped wanting to sing in front of people, even my own family and friends.
I honestly don't think I sing well even when people tell me I do, and I'm pretty self-conscious. I'm trying to get over that! >< Watching this video really helped me realize this. :)

@HometownSmallville There are many factors to consider. For one, all voice teachers are NOT created equal. Many teachers simply don't know how to help someone who's starting out at a much lower skill level. Another major issue is that taking your ability to the next level requires a strong will/work ethic. Some singers just don't feel that their subpar vocals are an issue - Image, acting, partying, etc, all take priority over vocal training. Being famous, doesn't mean you're smart.

Finally I realized that wasn’t possible, seeing as I was first chair viola and second chair cello 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️😂😂 now I’m #2. I’ve been watching your videos and practicing, I’ve noticed how much I’ve limited my voice hoping to not intimidate others. I’m no Beyoncé lol but my voice is rich and I’m learning to love it.

I turned into type 3 years ago. I got over that, but now I am working on the type 2, because I closed up for so long, it is like starting all over again. The best self confidence booster I had was when I was singing in a parking lot and did not realize I was as loud as I was. So I was putting the groceries in the car and there were people every where clapping. If I could learn to get type two down. I know I could do it.

I play bass in a band, wich means I have good ear on low notes, I can play guitar too. As a beginner I used to practise guitar every single day, even when I got home exhausted, I picked the guitar.
I want to improve my voice, but when it comes to vocal exsercises, I was lazy. I'm used to public performing, so senf-confidense is not a problem, only I need is daily practice.
Some people told me that I'll never be a good singer that I'm terible, but I will be, no matter how long it will take :)

Simply, a great video. Personally, I am a two. I become become a little like an angry 3 when my ability is currently hampered, or temporarily under performing, in anything. Dry air, and some mild sinus issues have my voice sounding like crap. Now, f--k is my most sung lyric.
I also like the part about people who don't want to practice. My favorites are the people who are too cool to practice whatever they want to be tops at.

    Hi Mr. Eric,
Sing to me is like someone can’t dance… can you imagine when you play a music and say to this person now dance ! And there is not rhythm at all? That’s me sing!
I’m very good dancer. I feel the music , the music its like make part of my mind body . I dont know if you understand me. But sing Jesus Christ hehehe. My roommate wanted to kick me out😂
And i realize I don’t have this talent to sing.
And since im watching your videos, Lenining training and training. Things started to chance my voice sounds better and better. And i got positive feedback 😊 but i know there are lot to learn and learn. @Akee1990 Same thing here. I thought with singing, you either do, or you do not. Then, I found out with minimal practice I can hit some pretty decent sounds. So, now, I just toy around with classical (arias) and rock for fun.

OUTSTANDING response to this often asked question. Bravo! Im on top of my keyboard applauding!... er.. I wuz... now Im typing! LOL! all jokes aside, Very articulate response. Very encouraging, and very realistic. I think ONE thing that fuels people's fears are Simon's responses to people on American Idol. I think some people fear that the singers Simon SLAMS "ARE THEM" and they walk around with THAT attitude and fear even when they're learning how to sing better. What do you think?
