- Over the years, we’ve gotten pretty good at avoiding game overs in videogames, but there are some ways of losing that are so obvious and yet so totally irresistible that we end up doing them anyway, consequences be damned. Underrated comment
In Tomb Raider II, I realised I was not going to survive a gunfight, so I reached for Quick Reload and hit Quick Save by accident. Lara was in the air, half-way through a cartwheel, and it wouldn't let me use items or bring up the menu unless she was on the ground. Every time I reloaded, she'd die before landing.
On the plus side, playing through the game up to that point was a lot faster the second time, as I'd already worked out all the puzzles.
Yeah. Sometimes I wish Ark: Survival Evolved had a quick save function. I know that wouldn't work for those playing PvP, but on single player would be great!
If Nier Automata didn't want me removing my OS chip, they shouldn't put it in such a conveniently accessible place. I need that memory space for combat chips!
Or hey, test eating the live fish in one of the quest. You just have to try it.

portal 2, jumping into the bottomless pit when wheatly asked you too. there's even an achievement for it.

Yep, I definitely did that once. Partly for the achievement, but mostly to see his reaction. It's been a while since I've played Portal, but I think you get some dialogue and stuff from GLaDOS if you don't get off the platform and you just let yourself get burned to death instead. I could be mistaken about that though.
there is another one earlier in Portal 2, you can cross the light bridge GLaDOS offers you when you first escape and get trapped in a room full of deadly neurotoxin.

My favorite one is in Nier: Automata where you eat a fish which is completely incompatible with your android systems and you just die. Or where you remove your OS. That game has a lot of these, actually.
How about the Outer Worlds ending where you 'skip' the big ship you were trying to save directly into the sun because your intelligence stat is too low! Surely the greatest in-character death of all time.
Came to the comments looking for this. Obsidian *knew* we would try it and added an achievement for doing it!

In Prey you can be killed by the helicopter blades while still playing the intro sequence... you get an achievement for it.
They've brought that up before, either here or on Outside Xtra. That said, this is probably the third time they've brought up Death By Ardat Yakshi, so repeats are clearly not off the table.
I did that one for the trophy.

Two HUGE contenders for “most easily avoidable deaths”!
1. Disco Elysium: you play a detective who, during an interrogation, borrows your partner’s gun despite his reservations. Against his constant urging, every step you take brings you closer and closer to putting the gun in your mouth and blowing your own brains out, resulting in a “game over” newspaper headline about a mad detective who killed himself during an interrogation
2. Outer worlds: if you play a low intelligence run, you can fly your ship containing specimens needed to perserve the human race straight onto the sun - with you too on that ship - while the NPC’s plead with you to reconsider before you take your final heroic journey.
Please include those in a commenter recommended video!
Another moronic gameover that is hard to resist in _Disco Elysium_ is shooting Cunoesse... I mean, a big part of me wanted to see what would happen. But I should have expected that shooting a child (even if she was a little shit) would spell the end of the investigation lol.
Poor Kim, I probably ruined his life with that one.
Thelving the Wing poor Kim indeed, imagine if he had a memory of all of the incidents that occurred involving you borrowing his gun even after the game reloaded - like how the characters in Undertale had a persistent memory of your actions after you reloaded.
What comes to my mind, is the first Tomb Raider.
In TR1 you can jump into King Midas Hand, which turns everything it touches into gold. Well curiosity killed the Croft... poor Lara.

Elder Scrolls 3, Morrowind. You find a man who falls from the sky, dying on impact. He has some Scrolls of Icarian Flight on him that boost your Acrobatics to an absurd degree. They can be used.
If you say you never used them just to see what happens, I call you a liar.
haha Ive never even played Morrowind yet I know about this, quite a jump :D
They are actually pretty useful. Use them to get up things or just use a slowfall potion and its one of the fastest ways to travel
Gotta pair it with that feather fall spell, tho.
Ah yes. And the boots of blinding speed.
Useful for fast travel. Just aim for some water and you'll be all right.
When Glados in Portal 2 says “Look, a deer!” and opens a door that clearly leads to certain death and not to a lovely view, but you go through it anyway! You can even hear Wheatley shouting “What are you DOING?” as you run 😂

When you go to space in Super Paper Mario, you can refuse to put on your space helmet multiple times. Meanwhile, your partner Tippi gets increasingly frustrated with you for being an idiot.
you can also turn down the quest entirely at the beginning of the game.
The best thing about the Carbonela one is that his spirit is actually watching all of this happen, and as soon as you begin the run again he’s screaming ‘What did you do to my beautiful face!” at you

@@tundralilac274 If you have very high charisma you can convince Stale Mary to let you into the Silent King's chamber, when you discover that he's secretly been dead for years and they've been making things up as they go along to maintain order. Only living people can sit in the throne and you'll never die so they offer it to you
You need an unrealistically high level of charisma for that point in the game and you can only do it on your first visit so it's not surprising you might not have encountered it
The thousand-year door entry reminded me of a similar segment in the sequel, Super Paper Mario where, after getting teleported into the ever-expansive vacuum of space, you're asked if you want a helmet.
If you say no each time the game insists you put it on, you suffocate and the game calls you stupid.
You can also get a game over by just refusing to be the hero at the beginning of the game
The "T" ending in Nier: Automata is irresistible. Did I know what removing my own OS chip would do? I suspected. Did I do it anyway? Of course I did.
2-for-1 special: the "K" ending is equally predictable, and equally has to be done. That mackerel had to be eaten.
It was good, though...

Imagine spending billions of credits to resurrect Shepard, only to be informed that he died cus he couldn't resist sticking it in crazy. Poor TIM. 😂

The Ghost Trick moment, done by many people as more of a desperation move than “you know this is gonna hurt” moment, is one of my funniest moments ever in gaming. Extreme Brownie Points for finding a way to reference it Andy!!!

In “The Neverhood” you play as a literal clay figure. Nothing can harm you, wether it’s tnt or loss of head. You can, however, fall off the planet when you drain a lake and jump down the drain. There’s even signs telling you that you will die.
GHOST TRICK!!!! I'M SO HAPPY!!! XD
What, no Mackerel from NieR: Automata? The description warns you you're going to die horribly, but you can't help but match Jackass' curiosity with your own
One of my favorites of this type is Cyan's Obduction, where the entire game you're warned about something called a Mofang Device and told not to approach it under any circumstances. Near the end of the game, you finally come across one. Taking the idiot bait and approaching it causes it to detonate violently, ruining everything and netting you an achievement for poor listening skills.
Here's a few more:
*Midas' Hand in Tomb Raider 1*
In Tomb Raider 1's Palace Midas level, you find a destroyed statue of King Midas in the back of a small garden. Climbing onto the statue's hand does what you wouldn't be expecting in a game whose traps are either sci fi or grounded in reality like Tomb Raider (unless you assume the hand uses nanites) and kills you with the king's golden touch curse; you turn to gold within 10 seconds before falling over.
*Firing the eclipse cannon yourself in System Shock*
In system shock 1, SHODAN is planning at the start to fire a tachyon laser at earth to glass major cities before infecting the survivors with a mutagen virus. You're supposed to take a roundabout route to power up the space colony's shields then fire the cannon into the shield to destroy it. However, you can very much fire the cannon too early (such as just pushing buttons willy nilly) which results in you glassing half the planet yourself. SHODAN is legitimately happy with you for doing this and tells you just before cutting to the main menu to wait a minute so a boss cyborg can collect you for the celebration, sounding very much like GLaDOS's party escort line in Portal.
*Accidentally crushing yourself in Mother 3*
In Mother 3, there's a part where Duster needs to break through some floors in Osohe Castle by ramming a statue so the heavy metal ball on it falls off. However if you ram it on the wrong side, the ball falls on top of you, crushing you to death.
*Screwing over your friends for infinite wealth in Rayman 2*
In Rayman 2, you need to get a potion to cure one of your buddies' sickness from the Cave of Bad Dreams in the marsh. After navigating pits of rotting corpses & thorny vines then getting chased by and battling Mike from Monsters Inc crossed with a cacodemon, you get the choice of the potion or all the gold you could ever want and need. Take the latter choice and Rayman decides not to save the world but instead chill out atop a hill of gold doubloons on a paradise island. Thankfully it resets to the choice so you aren't forced to start over.
*Crashing a flying carpet in Prince of Persia 2*
In the notoriously hard Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow & The Flame for DOS, Macintosh & Xbox Classic, you have to open a grate in the ceiling above the Skull Caves' treasure room, then sit on a magic carpet to be taken to the lost soul from Doom infested Ruined City. However, crouching on the carpet is what triggers the flying animation, even when you crouch involuntarily after landing from a jump so if you accidentally do so before opening the trapdoor grille, the prince flies straight into it and becomes a red smear on the ceiling with a cartoonish *splat!*
In the same game, you can also kill yourself by dancing: you need to mash left/right alternately to turn into the dark prince from the first game, which is required for the final boss. However, you need maximum total health from life extending potions or it won't work, and using the dark prince command takes your health away.
*Attacking the Empress in A Hat in Time*
In the Nyakuza Metro DLC of the best Mario game ever made, Hat Girl gets conscripted by a sphynx cat anthropomorph who is the local yakuza kumiko called the Empress, to bring her the time pieces you've been collecting so she can either sell them from her jewellery store or use them to barter shadier stuff in an upcoming deal. Throughout the game, you're used to allied or otherwise invincible NPCs making a squeeze toy sound when you hit them. Try this to the Empress in her shop in the metro and she fights back, killing you in 1 hit no matter how far or quickly you try to run away. Not even the time slow hat saves you.
*Killing Captain Keyes in Halo 1*
Back on Classic Xbox, once you met Captain Keyes on the pillar of Autumn in Halo 1, you'd need to leave the bridge so as to equip the pistol he gives you. It's entirely possible to head back once you have it drawn and cap the captain or any other bridge crew with his own gun, and why wouldn't you after the escort mission later? Doing so causes Cortana to lock the doors and send invincible marines to come and kill you, warning them you've gone rampant. (A holdover from when Halo was Marathon 4 in a scrapped alpha story) You can hide down a nearby ladder, but you must at least reload eventually.
Super Paper Mario: "will you save the universe?" -Nah "oh that's too bad" *the bad guy wins. Game over*
Even better:
Game: Hey, put this helmet on so you can breathe in space.
Mario: Nah, I played Galaxy I know I don’t need that.
Game: ok
Mario proceeds to suffocate in space.

The Neverhood: There’s only one place you can die, and it’s clearly signposted. Everyone jumps in the hole at least once though.

In the old Sierra game "Torin's Passage" in the final encounter with the Sorceress you're sneaking around and balanced on a ledge over "lava" and only have two items:
A magic spell book that swaps the places of you and the other person and
A bagpipe.
If you try the bagpipe the narrator actually comments on what a bad choice that was
Love the old Sierra adventure games. They were so ridiculously unfair and my child brain could never work out what to do, but they were amazing and I feel such a pang of nostalgia every time I see them.

Portal 2. Every time Wheatley asked me to just jump to my doom I couldn’t help it. In my defense, he did ask nicely and politely said thank you after....
He also offers that convenient death option just before his lair.

Iirc you don't even need to push the button. I think it goes off by itself if you forget to refill the pool as well.
What about Nier: Autotomato where you can delete your own operating system? I think that level of stupidity deserves at least an honorable (if dumbfounded) mention?
I'm gonna save you a lot of time and say "Yes - That fire _will_ do damage." any time the question comes up, be it in a video game or not.
In Hitman 2 there's a challenge for using the killswitch on the Constant. Which is made even worse, because after you've killed both the Washingtons you can't save anymore apparently.

I once became so incredibly overpowered that I survived eating jarrin root with health to spare. Deathbrand armor is a hell of a drug kids.

I always wondered why you couldn't _plant_ jarrin root in one of your houses, get a constant supply as a reward for all your efforts.
Would have been nice, sure it's a quest item I can't drop, but planting it will make more, how is that not better, come on game.

@@insaincaldo yeah apparently the root itself is actually programmed into the game as a usable alchemical ingredient even. You don't even need a mod to turn it into poisoned elixirs! The mod is only needed to have more than one.

In the original version of Space Quest, pressing the wrong button would actually take you to the castle in King's Quest, not Nottingham Castle.
The Outer Worlds had a literal stupid game over. When you’re on the Hope you can choose to fly the ship yourself which ends with you flying it into the sun.
My stupidest game over was listening to GlaDOS in Portal 2. Even got an achievement out of it as a permanent reminder.
I did that one too once just to see what would happen. Same for listening to Wheatley and staying still on that platform instead of using the Portals and the gel to get away before the mashy spike plates hit, lol. Or jumping into the pit when he asks you to.
There's an interesting game over from Corpse Party where you need to read notes from a dead victim, if you find and read all the notes your character will get possessed and game over.
It's really hard to resist the temptations of wanting to know what happened next to the victim.
In The Neverhood, the only way to die is to walk into a hole. There are signs that say "Danger!", "Don't jump in the drain!", and "You will die!". If you still walk forward, Klaymen falls off the planet, and you get the only "The End" screen.
NieR Automata has plenty of ways to get stupid game overs. For example, eating a sardine. Or, the best one, unplugging your OS chip despite the games warnings
it's a mackerel not a sardine, you can catch oil covered sardines as well, but it's eating the mackerel that kills you

Fallout New Vegas Dead Money gave a bulk discount on these: reading Sinclair's personal journals in the vault despite (potentially) seeing multiple direct warnings on what will happen OR telling Elijah you refuse to work "for" him despite the bomb collar around your throat OR siding with Elijah at the very end after he makes his goals...fairly clear.

context for anyone understandably not following much UK politics now or in 2016. Michael Gove, Then Justice Secretary in the government was campaigning to leave the EU (Brexit) and when he couldn't provide credible evidence behind claims or counter people pointing out it was clearly a massive risk if not outright bad idea said "“people in this country have had enough of experts”.

Not really a game over, but during the Isle of Sgail level in Hitman you can fail by detonating the Constant's killswitch, and they clearly knew we wouldn't be able to resist because it's one of the challenges for the level. They even called it 'couldn't resist'. Well... when you're right, you're right! Thanks Io.
Found one of these recently in Knights Of The Old Republic. Part of the main quest on Manaan has you being arrested and charging with disrupting the peace, punishable by death. Of course your arbiter tries to defend you, but you can interrupt him and just blurt out that you're guilty, even telling them it was a lot of fun, after which you are quickly executed. Truly taking the mission to save the galaxy seriously.

The Paper Mario series has a lot of these, such as refusing to put on a space helmet, becoming the Shadow Queen's servant, joining Dimentio and let's not forget refusing to take a Pure Heart and save the world.
There was a Monkey Island game with a great Game Over screen. The game warns you about a cliff you could fall off of, and if you walk up to it you indeed fall off. Then the Restart Restore Quit box comes up that Sierra Games used at the time. Of course, you end up bouncing back up because you landed on a rubber tree, and it jokes about how you'd be dead if it was a different game.

@@sampeters5589 if I remember correctly you have to get it yourself. The actual ending of the game though, which Bethesda had to patch in, allowed you to make the choice of activating the geck and cleanings the Capital Wastelands water yourself or sending in your companion. That’s the ending i thought they were talking about at first too.

Hi Italian here! I was expecting "Knock four times" from Cyberpunk 2077 to be in the list. The game does give you multiple warnings through the messages, but in such a playful tone that I thought it was going to be fake. But, no, if you do not do it, it is an instant game over.
Got got that by accident because I just skipped through the options. Boy, was I surprised...
I always found the alternate Game Over in the first Golden Sun to be pretty dumb but hilarious too. You are asked by the Wise One if you want to take on the journey, If you say no the game ends but its funny to me what that means cuz Issac's party is literally always just behind the bad guys every time. The Mercury Lighthouse is lit before you get to the top, the Venus Lighthouse is lit after an intrusive battle with Issac and his team, and you as Felix see to the Jupiter Lighthouse's lighting but each lighthouse must be lit with a Elemental Star and Issac holds the Mars Star which means the game(and thus the world) literally ends cuz 2 young boys said"Nuhhuhhh" to a grand adventure and literally just bogard the Mars Star the whole time and no one thought to return and grab the dang thing :P

I'm surprised you didn't mention the final boss fight in Donut County. If you try hard enough to die, which takes some serious work, you get an amazing game over cutscene, and an achievement!

The hilarious thing about Police Quest was that it didn't remove your ability to type commands even during the ending cutscene, so the hero cop could suddenly rip off all of his clothes during a big parade being held in his honor and still lose.
