- We see authentic game over screens aplenty, but we've gotten it wrong on several occasions when we've been fooled by some convincing fake game overs. There was the fake funeral for fake-dead Agent 47 in Hitman Blood Money, for one, in which the credits roll over his alleged corpse. And who can forget the pretend game over screen in Metal Gear Solid 3 when you are fake-dead Big Boss thanks to a fake death pill?
But then Metal Gear Solid is the daddy of meta-narrative mind screws. Remember how it tried to mess with you with that 'Fission Mailed' trick game over? Good times.

I think a lot of people right now forget how revolutionary and how much of a mindfuck that was at the time. Killing off the protagonist of the was something that just wasn't done until CoD4. Of course now we lose three player characters per game, but the time it was new and totally unexpected.

Kid Icarus Uprising had a beautiful game over fake-out. You kill Medusa, whom you thought was the main antagonist again (she had been in the last two games). Instead, Hades destroys the credits, and tells you to come kiss his butt.

MGS4. It has a lengthy credits sequence, makes you think Snake is dead, then fakes you out in the last line of the credits with Big Boss and spends another hour wrapping up stuff you had forgot about.

I would have thought they'd use the Sorrow. Considering I genuinely fell for that one, having not used the Fake Death pill during gameplay. Took me way to many attempts to figure out how you kill someone with no health lmao.

I remember the ending to Blood Money. My brothers and I were really confused and didn't find out that something was up until the casket lowered and it actually became game over. Turns out we were supposed to play around with the controls to revive him.

@@scottlundy8295 No, nuclear bombs detonate through nuclear fission due to the fact that they detonate through the splitting of the atom and the definition of fission is the act of dividing something into 2 or more parts. Fusion is when 2 atoms merge together making a larger, heavier atom.

metal gear solid 3's sorrow boss is a more convincing game over screen than any other. I couldn't figure out how to beat him without dying until I looked up that he doesn't really kill you and you have to revive yourself.

The MGS3 one got me in the worst way, I didn't wait for the real death to happen but I didn't realise that the fake game over menu actually worked like the real one and accidentally clicked "Continue" instead of using the revival pill sending me back to the start of the area.

Didn't it happen in like, the first ten minutes of the game? And all the promotional stuff had Juliette with her boyfriend's head attached to her hip all over it, like a "Look how kooky this game is, the girl carries her boyfriend's head around the whole game with her! LOL!" sort of thing. Pretty sure literally no one thought this was the actual end of the game.

Not sure if this happened with anyone else. But in Red Dead Redemption I thought the story just ended with you dying. I didn't know there was a final mission with you playing as Johns son to kill the marshals.
Same with Killzone Shadow Fall. You die, last level is played as another character avenging you.

I actually figured out the hitman game over screen on my first go. I was just fiddling with my controller and realized that:
1. it was vibrating
2. hitman's health was coming back up
so, I had a VERY satisfying hitman experience in that game.

Basically at the end of it, you will "die" no matter what. However, instead of hitting "Continue" to restart the battle only for it to happen again, you have to access your inventory and use the revival pill in order to actually continue with the game.
In World of Warcraft your whole raid gets wiped when you bring the Lich King down to 10% of his total health, but after a brief cutscene you get rezzed by the ghost of his father... Unless you release your spirit, in which case it really was kind of a game over.
Well, in retrospect...WoW doesn't really have a game over.....I mean your character can die, but the game never ends tbh

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Darkness, I beat Primal Dialga. There were credits and an emotional scene where I thought the game was over so I decided to replay it. Little did I know that was only halfway through the game.

umm... what about from Metal Gear Solid 3 when you “die” after defeating the sorrow?

Wise was stuck there for months, though maybe it was some bad end and that i had to not kill as many enemies to get through so restarted, this clearly did not work. eventually just mashed buttons and somehow got through with no clue how i did. replayed the game years later and once again got stuck there for weeks before finally realizing. i was so pissed.

@@brentlewissaulon4517 that was rather hard to understand, but i think i got what your saying. your claiming it was the first thing that came to mind, yet also claiming you pressed all buttons during the game over screen and noticed the inventory pop up like it does for fake death pill. (these do contradict so one is a lie)
you go on to say you used the fake death pill for stealth, so you were familiar with the mechanics. now keep in mind you have a very limited number so many players naturally saved it for a pinch and in the end many never used it before, or even ever in many cases. i was one such case, i had not used it before so did not know the revival pill was used on the game over screen.
it seems like your flexing that you found it right away with little trouble, but the fact that you contradicted yourself while bragging makes it just sad. if it was the first thing you though of why would you button mash to get something to happen. the only reason you would need to do that is if you didn't know what button opened the menu, in which case how you made it too there is beyond me.
@Qosparta Animations still bs, when given a game over screen your first though is never "i bet this is what i was aiming for" no you first though is "oh shoot i messed up" claiming he instantly knew it was a fake game over just doesn't make sense. the ways it "kills" you to get you there are a bit odd, but still legit looking. as its also a odd point in the game your fist though will be, "well i wonder what i was supposed to do"

It is. The game Screencheat for example, when you die, it will actually say Fission Mailed at the screen. Theres also a bunch of posts on 9gag about failing or something has comments saying Fission Mailed. It was a meme for a month or so.

Thing is, if that surprised you, you are either new or very unobservant. The message on the hud is different, and there's no mission end countdown. Plus the mission would be way too short and easy.

I’ve been fooled by that many times on my first playthrough that I kept continuing over and over again till I just got frustrated and looked up how to beat The Sorrow.
….Turns out I just had to take the revival pill 🤦🏻♂️
dead space 2. you kill the boss in your head, Isaac sits down, resigned to his fate as the station blows up around him, the sad, ending-sounding music starts, a couple names pop up for credits, then Elle show up in the shuttle and you have to fly up around the center pillar to get to her!

I just finished tales from the borderlands where you almost have a game over until the guy says wait you can't kill Valerie that easy or you didn't actually do that to killing her
Don't forget Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame. In that, there's a puzzle where you need to steal the blue Sacred Flame from a fire alter in a monastery dedicated to a bird goddess. Naturally, jumping to the alter to get it results in you dying.
There is a plaque on the wall before that which says "He who would steal the flame must die". You then realise that it's an instruction on how to take the flame, not a threat. (though it could be both) However, deliberately getting killed by the conveniently placed monk in the flame chamber gives you the usual game over screen when you die. So you press a key to continue at the last checkpoint right by the aforementioned sign and may get caught in a loop until time runs out. (the game has a timer like the original prince of Persia, but it's 75 minutes instead of 60)
What you need to do is let yourself get killed but sit there and not press anything. Do this and the Dark Prince (the Shadow in the game's title) comes out of the Prince's body, jumps over to the flame and takes it by setting himself ablaze. He's technically the Prince's spirit so the fire doesn't harm him. Then he returns to his body and all the monks stop being hostile and you can then leave. Alternately if you have enough hit points (from getting life extending potions), you can transform into the Dark Prince on your own and pick up the flame yourself the same way as in the fake game over cutscene. A lot of players got burned by this puzzle.

Honourable mention for Eternal Darkness. Sanity bar was a great idea, one effect of low sanity was to show a screen as if the game had crashed and restarted, got me several times!
What about batman arkham asylum when batman is tied up and joker shoots him as u need to dodge the bullet but u don't then it says retry the mission to then go back to normal
technically when catwoman escaped with the money it was game over with credits and then they rewind back to you playing as catwoman, but you can't choose to do that again

Um, I'd like to give an honorable mention: The fake death screen in Quest for Glory 3: Wages of War, when you leave a campfire burning in the savanna.

real films Yeah, so that game may have been the weakest in the franchise--but it isn't bad. Heck, it was the game that introduced me to the Quest for Glory SERIES (because it was the first QfG game I played).
The reason it was kinda lackluster is because it was spur-of-the-moment... since Shadows of Darkness was intended to be the third game at first, but then the Coles decided it was too soon for that dark a theme, and wanted to build the hero up more--so they pushed Shadows of Darkness back to the fourth game, and Wages of War became the third game. But I guess due to the last minute change, there was little time to really plan out puzzles for it.

There was an enemy in Bloodborne that if you died to the first time it would shove you in a sack and drag you off to a new secret area. Though it wasn't that secret because everyone died to this thing anyway because you know From Software.
I found 2 fake death in dead rising that's pretty obvious where if you "DIE" to a cult member or the army. then you will be captured where you try to escape from a back door to the movie theatre (if captured by a cult member.) or being taken alive by the army on their helicopter.
I heard that you can still play Assassins Creed Syndicate after the credits, but I wouldn't know because I finished the game 2 months ago and they're still rolling.
In Bravely Second, the final boss pretends to DELETE YOUR SAVE FILE.
Not really game over, but Bayonetta had two fake-out credits at the end of the game. *TWO*

The Ending with the sorrow - the part where you actually 'die' , and you have to use a revive pill in order to continue the story. I would call that a much bigger death you fell for moment, since it took me a couple of re-tries in order to figure that one out. Just having a fake death pill doesn't exactly make it a death we fell for.
Half way through the video the screen went black for a commercial and I swear, I thought the video was being meta and giving me a fakeout game over screen.
Not quite a "game over" but in castle crashers when you think the final boss is over and a chest drops down, opening it just summons one of his hardest forms to beat

In WOW the Frozen Citadel raid, when you fight the lich king he will wipe your entire team instantly when you defeat him, you must be dead on the floor waiting for Tirion Fordring to....break the ice......and revive you by breaking frostmourne

Control from Remedy Entertainment had a very nice fake-out ending after a massive twist (that would've been for a gut-wrenching cliffhanger) where the credits start to roll. It doesn't take long though for names in the credits to be replaced by "Leave" and "Leave your insides by the door" and other rambling messages that cross margins like "Push your fingers through the surface into the wet"... and as the credits continue to roll, words just bleed together, become distorted, and eventually bleed out into a white screen... which then drops main character Jesse Faden into a nightmarish white collar desk job at the FBC.
I wouldn't even fall for some of these, but I still like them
