  • As game worlds get larger, developers have had to come up with ways to let players get around them quickly. Some go the extra mile and give us fast travel systems that not only get us where we need to go, but do it in a way that is cool, stylish, or downright bizarre. Here are seven of our favourites. Enjoy, and subscribe for a video like this every Thursday!

    Just throwing this out there: using Fly in Pokémon. Sure, it seems like a reasonable way of getting around at first, but consider a lot of the Pokémon you can do it with. Plenty of them are tiny and should in no way be capable of carrying a 10-year old over great distances. One of them is an ancient ghost robot with rockets legs. My personal favorite is Doduo/Dodrio, who, according to the Pokédex, can’t actually fly.

      @MmeCShadow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      @@marhawkman303 The vending machines are specifically mentioned as being outfitted with all of the custom components of a YoRHa unit (and only a YoRHa unit; other types of androids can't make use of the fast travel machines). When you fast travel it just straight-up disassembles the body at one end and reassembles it at the other.
      The question, of course, raised right out the gate by 9S having to be restored from backup after the prologue mission, is whether the unit created at the other side is a 'transfer' of consciousness or a copy where the original consciousness is destroyed in the process in order to prevent simultaneous activation of a single consciousness. Is any YoRHa unit actually the same one as when they were initially activated, or is the 2B you end the game on actually a third or fourth clone (assuming minimal use of the fast travel system; otherwise you may have iterated and consequently killed dozens of 2Bs through the course of your first playthrough)? Does it matter to anybody except the last iteration, being disassembled and decompiled (eg: killed) in order to allow another variant of consciousness to pass on?
      It's NieR: Automata. You don't fast travel by popping out of a vending machine, you fast travel by having an existential crisis.

    The Secret World MMO subscribes to the 'hollow Earth' theory. One of the mysterious ancient powers built a train network through it that the current factions use as a fast-travel system.
    Fallen Earth, another MMO, had a particularly disturbing fast-travel system. You play a clone warmed up in a high-tech bomb shelter after an apocalypse. When you want to fast travel, you step into a scanning chamber that uploads your memories and skills into a fresh clone at the destination - and straight-up murders the old one.
    ...Not sure that system actually beats walking.

    • @bilateralrope8643

      Eve Online has jumping between clones as the fast travel and the respawn systems. When you die, you wake up in a fresh clone where you installed that clone. Or you could put your current clone in storage at one station to wake up in a clone you stored elsewhere.
      Both methods are used for fast travel by players.

    At the conclusion of The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, the darkening of the Dragonfires and the Oblivion Crisis should have left that world in a state where passage to and from the various planes of Oblivion was easy. Rather than the contrived _"Martin's sacrifice somehow closed the gates forever"_ ending we got, I'd hoped they do something bold and go the opposite way...
    ...where in the sequel game that is Skyrim, you fast-traveled by summoning an Oblivion gate. Not necessarily the hellish blood-red portals of the previous game, but a door to whatever Daedric Prince was relevant to your character, setting, or situation. You could open an Oblivion gate to Meridia's realm, for example, and step through benign white light and end up at your intended destination where the Oblivion gate then closes upon arrival.

    • @leeman27534
      @leeman27534 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that would be cool to maybe to as a thing in 6: if you're really chummy with a daedric prince you can utilize their realm as shortcuts (and maybe it'd relegate normal fast travel to more like skyrim's carts and not just 'anywhere you've ever been to')
      hell i'd kinda like the idea of exploring more of the daedric realms in general really

    • @BogeyTheBear
      @BogeyTheBear 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The conceit would be that you can only create a portal to a destination you visualize in your mind, which limits you to places you have seen.
      Perhaps an Oblivion Gate can only be formed at a summoning circle composed of same material as a Sigil Stone, something that is activated only if you touch or inscribe it. That solves the game mechanic of having to visit a location and activate its fast travel option in order to use it as a destination later.

    Siris and Isa, the playable characters, are deathless. When they die, their souls are able to go into new bodies. In their case, they have a Rebirth Chamber maintained by an alchemist that brings them back to life in a new body after the end of each mission.

Majora's Mask had owl statues. The oracle games had Gale seeds. Wind Waker gave link a tornado to warp to places. Twilight Princess had shadow beast portals. A Link Between Worlds had a bell to summon a broom ride.
    Earthbound's PSI teleport had you run a short distance with PSI teleport alpha, but you could change the direction with the d-pad in mid sprint. Omega version had you run around in an enlarging circle.
    Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse had you call people to teleport to them through Max's brain in chapters 1, 3 and 4; chapters 2 and 5 and a projector you used instead, but seeing as there's no interactive driving sections and it's not a huge walk to the car, does it even count?

    The shadow nexus system in sudeki was always pretty cool and the fact you can travel around the fast travel world it not just a standalone place.

      Haven’t died in death stranding yet outside of the scripted one at the start but I think giving birth to yourself probably counts as weird

      That is weird to say the least. Also sunset overdrive would work for this since there is like a million respawning types

    Pokemon, using Fly.
    For some of these, it's not a big problem as the bird at least looks like it can carry you. For the most part, though, these critters have virtually no business carrying a young human trainer whose head is bigger than the entire pokemon. How exactly is a level 2 Pidgey supposed to legitimately carry a trainer across the region?
    This was fixed starting in Sun/Moon by using a special Charizard, but the problem remains.

      @@ethanmcdowell1164 I wasn't trying to be mean, nor did I disagree in any way (didn't agree either though). I was just clarifying that my comment was for the purposes of "this is a bizarre fast travel method".
      As for Gyardos learning Fly? From what I've seen, Gyarados (despite being a flying type) never really leaves the water. I don't know why they gave it the flying type given its portrayals in the anime. So to that end, I don't think it should have even had the flying type in the first place. In turn, it shouldn't be able to learn Fly either.

    How about the Zergs in Starcraft 1&2?
    You enter a giant worm, travel through it's body and then emerge out of the other "end". I'm really happy Blizzard decided not to animate that part...

    The Shiekah Slate also has more weird things about it, through the "Runes" (which I think of like those Gadgets you can install on an Android mobile device), you can: grab magnetic metal objects and move them how you see fit, freeze and move water into a giant climbable block, freeze time on specific objects (and enemies too if upgraded), generate one of two different shapes of remote bombs out of nothing basically, and (with DLC completed) spawn a horse-shaped motorcycle out of nowhere. That somehow can get fuel for it from any item you give it.

    I really like Wind Waker's, because you had to basically find it entirely by yourself- by shooting a big hovering frog god with lots of arrows, until it surrendered and taught you the right way to wave your magical conductor's baton to summon small tornados. Those tornados would carry you to various islands! While violently spinning you and your sentient boat.

    Not gonna mention Darksiders? An alternate realm filled with hidden items and secrets.
    I platinumed Death Stranding - there's a shit-ton more to it than just walking.
    The walking part is about overcoming the terrain, crossing rivers with ladders, scaling down mountains, making the route as easy to travel as possible, all whilst just exploring, taking in some awesome views, ramming bandits with trucks and bikes, or blasting the shit out of giant tar ghosts with blood grenades, blood assault rifles and blood missile launchers.
    You can skip the walking entirely if you build ziplines along the way the first time, and just glide up mountains and across chasms.
