    I think the reason Porsche keeps the twisting "key" to the left of the steering wheel is because it's a callback to classic Porsche race-cars. In LeMans, for example, the driver would jump in the driver seat and then be able to turn the car on with one hand, while using the other hand to put it into gear. TL;DR - racing tradition.

      It's the whole "Made in Germany" marketing. Every German car manufacturer has their own number plate series from their home town, S from Stuttgart in the case of Porsche. 8 is considered to be a lucky number in China, it makes sense the car has at least one 8 on its number plate. So the plate says "Made in Stuttgart, Germany, good fortunes for the owner".

    6:04 it is a reference to about 40 years ago when porsche was participating in the Le Mans. The start of the race was outside of the car. The second the race began the drivers had to get in, start the car, put it in first gear and go. Porsche had the ignition on the left side so the driver could start the car with the left hand and put it in gear with the right hand

      He was referencing why there was a key fob stuck in the ignition; not the fact that the key fob was on the left. And it’s a common misconception that Porsche put the key on the left for Le Mans starts, they put the key on the left because when they were building early 356s during the war putting the ignition on the left used less materials, and they continued on the tradition once the figured out that it made it a little easier for Le Mans starts.

    1. Offroad button raised the vehicle 40mm, splits AWD bias to 50/50 split (instead of 20/80 split in Sport Mode) it also changes the shift points for the transmission, expecting you're driving at slower speeds and steeper angles
    2. The blank key can be removed, and you can use the key fob instead to start the car, but it's a convenient thing not needing to put your key fob in and out.
    3. Cargo area: there's a hidden air pump behind left panel, the huge battery is under the floor panel, along with the spare, tools, jack, and subwoofer for those Bose/Burm equipped

    That 'lever' you talking about is an ignition key from a long Porsche racing heritage. Back in the day, racing driver didn't start from inside their car. They have to run from outside, get in their car, and start their own car. Putting the key slot on the left will give Porsche driver advantage so they can put it into gear with the other hand. Instead of installing an engine start-stop button they kept it that way to honor that history.

    I agree, this main selling point for the Macan is the performance and handling, infotainment gizmos isn’t its focus. I’m pretty much the same, just give me a GPS, an aux port, and a good sound system. I’m all for build quality and driving dynamics. I keep bouncing back and forth on wether I prefer the first gen over the face lifted version though. I am more partial to the exhaust note of the 1st gen V6 but an exhaust system could help with that. Hearing you refer to it as a lifted hot hatch (which is true) makes me really interested in seeing what one of these would look like lowered.

    I have a 2018 Macan S and love it! The reason Porsches have the key on the left side of the steering wheel is tradition. Think about the Porsches and even corvettes of the 50s and 60s. The ignition key was on the left. That’s because in those days race car drivers had to run across the paddock and start their cars. Turn the key on the left and use one’s right hand to shift into 1st.

    • @canyonaro
      @canyonaro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      As a current 2015 Macan Turbo owner & longtime BMW owner, I'll let you know that the benefit of lower depreciation is swallowed up by truly insane service costs. Porsche service is at least double BMW & Mercedes prices.
      Examples: $150 to fix one of the strings on the cargo cover. The dealer called me & asked if I wanted them to just leave it broken because they knew how insane the number was. Stock Turbo brake job? That'll be $3k.
      That (non-trivial) quibble aside, I absolutely love my Macan. If you only have one garage space and aren't single, there's no better all-around vehicle on the market. The GTS is the sweet spot and can be had for only a couple grand more than this review car.

    That "lever" looks the way it looks for the same reason it's on the left of the steering wheel - heritage. It's an hommage to the old race-car Porsches dating back as far as the 50s, where the ignition was on the left side of the steering wheel, so you could start up the engine while jumping into it - given that these races started with a sprint to the car and getting into it. That split second advantage meant you were off the line ever so slightly faster. - stupid, I know, yet a nice Quirk :)

    Great video as always-Doug really sold me-I don't think Porsche should put turbo exclusive details across the board, save the visual distinction for the actual turbo vehicles which should go back to being something special. MINI (BMW owned) also uses that big hood/fender combined panel. It is really cool that the sportier Macan comes with a smaller, more precise steering wheel-those fasteners Doug was alluding to are called Allen head bolts-I think the reason that Porsche always got a pass for their SUV roofs is because they were less severe then BMW or Mercedes' although, I liked it on the GLE and not the X6/4. It's cool that Porsche has a twist lever on the left side in keeping with their LeMans heritage.

    I asked my local dealer about the left ignition lever and she told me that back in the day they would start races by running to their cars, starting the car, and then driving off. Apparently, they would start the car by inserting the key with the left hand and shift with right hand, which is why the ignition switch is on the left side.
