  • This was a great suggestion by the Queen fans, it's a fun Rock and Roll Medley from London in 1977. We recognized most of these songs, but we're sure our viewers will fill us in on the missed details. Queen fans are good like that.

Chief Mouse does great restorations! Queen viewers are on the ball. The disco ball in this case. yeah, "Lucille" is a Little Richard song. From memory, I want to say that Elton John WAS actually sidestage when Freddie launched into "Saturday Night". It almost looks like Freddie is discussing it with Roger & John via nods, points, and smiles. For sure, "Stupid Cupid" was an add-on as he clearly is telling them he wants to do it. Love this group so much. Ending on "God Save The Queen" - Brian version.

That ending was a recording of Brian May playing God Save The Queen, the British National Anthem., which they started playing at the end of their concerts. Sometimes, Freddie would wear a crown and a long cape and parade around in front of the crowd.
He played it on the roof of Buckingham Palace in London, on Queen Elisabeth II's Golden Jubilee.

If I recall well, Brian and Roger say that Freddie didn't remember all the lyrics so the singer used to change the song when he forgot the lyrics. It was a fun game for the rest of the band to follow Mercury's song changes.

I love this medley, it is just so much fun and the whole band seems to be having a great time doing it. These of course were all the early rockers and those who influenced them so it is kind of like a party or a fun jam session with friends. Lucille was a song cowritten and sung by Little Richard. Queen always ends their shows with God Save The Queen (Britain's National Anthem) In the USA the lyrics were changed to be My Country 'Tis Of Thee.

Hi folks! This was the first tour I saw them on. (It was a double-edged sword. I was 12, my Pop was a huge fan. We never missed a show, but, it was my Pop.) I'd never seen anything like that and still haven't. He wore a succession of those catsuits, and that disco ball suit shone like the midday sun. A thousand laser beams lit up the Richfield Coliseum and my grades promptly plummeted. (I blamed my parents' divorce. Let's be real, after all.) I think the strangest thing I heard them do was the old Ricky Nelson chestnut, "Garden Party." I had to look that one up. Sorry my posts aren't terribly informative, but your channel gives me a great opportunity to reminisce about the greatest band that ever was. Love you guys!

Though they were obviously professionals who rehearsed a lot and clearly loved music and took it seriously, they were clever enough to make room for spontaneity. Several on-stage decisions (such as when to change from one song to another, when to end and so on) would take place via visual cues between them, such as 7:53 when he looks at Roger and points at the piano, letting him know they'll include 'Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting' (because that particular concert took place on a Saturday); sometimes they'd do it verbally (e.g. 10:21, when he softly tells Brian they'll do 'Stupid Cupid', repeats it louder a couple more times until they finally do it).
Speaking of Elton John: they were close friends and were actually borrowing one of his (Elton's) pianos for that particular tour. A few months later, Mercury bought his own and would use it for every single live performance from November 1977 onwards. It was a beautiful Steinway concert grand made in New York. After his death, Steinway (the company) offered to restore it as it'd been through loads of touring and travelling, wear and tear, and it's now in Brian's lounge.
Elvis was still alive when they did this performance (and they'd done the medley a few months prior in the States, a lot of times!), I wonder if he ever knew they were such big fans of his. It's a shame they never got to meet.

P.S. The really sad thing is, they ended every show with "God Save the Queen" and those blurry blinking lights in the background are part of The Crown-the greatest stage set they ever had. Before the show, it just looked like black fabric in a crown shape with disco balls for ornamentation at the top. But when it was lit up and the show was on, there was nothing like it, and there's woefully little footage of it. They filmed everything else after to the rafters, but not that crown. It was something to behold.

Hi Coach and Mrs Coach, I loved your reaction to Queen's awesome rock n roll medley, they really are the GOAT'S, whether playing their own music or somebody else's, they just rock like nobody else! This medley closed out their concert at London's Earl's Court arena in June '77 and the instrumental piece after the band said their farewell's was the English national anthem, Queen style :) It ended every Queen show right up until Knebworth in August '86. Either one of these tunes in this medley were rockers and another 'rocker' I highly recommend you both react to is Keep Yourself Alive from Montreal '81. A-Quee-ciate, I love it, is that a word? Thank you for that link - I had never seen that one. So funny when Freddie says "I forgot the words" and Brian immediately fills in the next bit. They covered each others back all the time. Great guys!

Yes, they said in the comments it was, although we saw Chuck Berry (and lots of others) did cover it.

Coach, I found this video of Howard Stern showing Brian May's response to being named the Greatest Guitarist by Guitar World - th-cam.com/video/Ca2I4rHesdU/w-d-xo.html. I thought that you might enjoy it.
And you might enjoy this video of when Brian met Roger and Freddie - th-cam.com/video/_N2JSiNMfjI/w-d-xo.html

I like you two but man, not being able to identify the national anthem of America's closest ally really does show what an insular country it is.
