Great reaction. Freddie and Montserrat adored each other. Montserrat was one of the few people Freddie told that he was dying of aids. During this performance Montserrat noticed that there were tears in his eyes, so she moved closer and held his hand. If you want more listen to them singing Golden Boy.

He didn't need to tell her. She knew what the mark on his face meant. He was openly walking around with it on show in early 1987, and she told him he needed to cover it up.

I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong; however, I think I remember an interview with Montserrat in which she says that Freddie's eyes were welling up so she reached out her hand to offer support. He may have been overcome by her amazing talent (he adored her), or that fact that he knew this would be his last time on stage. Great reaction!

I am sitting here sobbing. I have listened to the song four times, and I just can't stop crying. That beautiful, soaring voice, silenced forever. What would Freddie be producing now? How can I miss an artist so deeply? I am not the fan girl type, and Queen was big when I was in high school (graduated 45 years ago) so his voice isn't new. Knowing he wrote those gut-wrenching lyrics, and then sang them so touchingly with the great Montserrat Caballé . . . tear wrenching. Beautiful, astoundingly majestic, and a beautiful reaction. Thank you.

Montsy was “captivated.” The opera star said Freddie’s work was .. “magnificent. It is something very special, it is created from the heart.” She even tried to persuade him to record some pure opera with her. Gotta do THE GOLDEN BOY, music by Freddie & lyrics by Sir Tim Rice. 🌙⭐️💫✨

👏👏👏Montserrat remembered to that night this way: "While he was singing, I noticed that his eyes were shiny with tears. I gave him my hand. He clasped it and kissed it. It was clear he was suddenly aware of his own fate. They were tears of farewell. It was his goodbye, at least to the stage."
In terms of Freddie we don't have to talk about his vocals only, but his manners, passion and emotions delivered to the audience and of course his unforgettable stage presence. The Golden Boy from the same event is amazing, a bit more theatrical and dramatic.

Freddie was an Opera fan and she was his favorite. I believe he said on Spanish radio that she had the best voice he ever heard. In 1986, he mentioned on Spanish television that he would like to meet her, and they met for the first time in Barcelona in February 1987. She had already been asked to do the Olympics and once they had a "love at first meeting" moment she asked Freddie to do a song with her for them. In an interview somewhere here on YT Freddie said he thought the one song would be it. Ended up she wanted to do more so they did 2 others together. For the actual Olympics she went on stage alone but they dubbed in Freddie's voice to sing along with her.
Bottom line is they became close and fast friends and cared about each other deeply.

Beautiful performance by both of them. Simply outstanding. Montserrat was Freddie's favorite opera singer, he admired her for years. He said something in an interview how he would love for her to sing one of his songs. Somehow the message got to her and she set up a time for them to meet. Honestly, Freddie just wanted her voice on a personal recording singing one of his songs. They met in Barcelona which is where Montserrat lived and they became fast friends. It seems that she also admired Freddie. Freddie intended to do one song with her but she then asked him how many songs are usually on one of his albums, he told her around 12. She said, okay, let's make an album. Freddie had to scramble and write a bunch of new songs because you just don't say no to opera's number 1 Diva. Yes, they became very dear friends. The first time I heard this I was just stunned but I had heard Exercises In Free Love beforehand where Freddie sings Montserrat's part of a song he was writing to send to her to see if she likes it. To hear Freddie singing soprano was mind boggling.

I love this performance and at-the-same-time it makes me sad because this particular song is actually quite autobiographical for Freddie: At this time, he was keeping his terminal AIDS diagnosis a secret from almost everybody (including his bandmates; he didn't tell them until 1989). He had confided his secret to Montserrat, though... She had been excited about the prospect of the two of them performing "Barcelona" live together at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, so he told her that he wouldn't be able to perform with her because he would be gone by then.

The brilliant pairing of Freddie Mercury with Montserrat Caballe was legendary, never equaled before or after, Freddie already knew that he had AIDS, but performed with her more powerfully than even he had ever dons. They have both passed away, (the great Montserrat in recent years) but their magic will live on forever. Thank you for presenting this and your excellent reactions. I am proud to subscribe. Well done.

There are many lives that you will say it’s the best you have heard Freddie. He was truly a one of a kind. They did love each other. Freddie loved opera and heard her voice and said she was the best in the world. She agreed to meet him. They met in Spain and Freddie brought along a song he wrote for her and sang it showing he was serious. That song is EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE (check it out). They got along beautifully and Monserrat suggested they do an album together. At that time a Rock star never did a collab with an opera star. It was a first.
I really want you to react to White Queen live at Hammersmith Oden 1975. It will not only have incredible vocals, but Brian Mays guitar will blow your mind!!!
BTW, I watched Live Aid live on my TV on that amazing July 1985 day. When Queen ran out at 6:41pm and began their history making performance my jaw dropped. I had watched several groups since noon time and they did truly blow all of them out of the water. 1.9 billion people joined me in watching that day. It was truly an incredible memory. I still enjoy watching it on TH-cam to this day. I have been a huge fan since I first heard Killer Queen on the radio in 1974 here in the USA.

Freddie teared up during this song - you’ll notice they held hands through the end.. as Freddie didn’t let go. They were both giants in their ‘lane’ of music. I always feel this is about Freddie. How can i go on. He found out he had AIDS in March 87. I also say that The Golden Boy is also Freddie. Read the lyrics. They really respected, admired and loved each other. Freddie was astounded with Montserrat and was actually quite frightened at the thought of writing songs for this most famous Soprano. She also admired Freddie too.....they became great friends. She was in the unveiling ceremony of Freddie's statue too in Montreux, Switzerland in 1996. She has akso passed away now.

If you want to.know how much Freddie loved Montserrat read the words to the song Barcelona. It's not about the city, it's about Freddie meeting Montsy for the first time in Barcelona
    "I had this perfect dream.
This dream was me and you.
I want all the World to.hear you.
Miracle sensation, my guide and inspiration"
Freddie heard Montsy at Convent Garden and said she was the most beautiful thing he'd ever heard and that the whole World deserved to hear her, so he made it happen. But it was years later. Off stsge Freddie was actually very shy, and he thought this famous opera diva would never want to sing with him.
Fortunately, her kids were Queen fans and in a Spainish radio interview Freddie was asked what he liked most about Spain and he answered Montserrat Caballe, and the rest is history.
They actually became very close friends and you only have to see how Montsy looks at Freddie when they sing together, to see how much she loved him.

Virtuosity. Melody. Outstanding vocal talent. This is what I find missing in a lot of music today where the emphasis has shifted to the production side of things and more synthesized and techno aspects of the music. I’m not arguing that the new productions do not require talent, it’s just a different type of talent. I am too old school. I just really miss THIS. Thank you Freddie.

Oh man.... Your words around 4,30 give me chills! Music unites people, that's one thing for sure!
Freddie and Queen have been a part of my life for 45 years! And there isn't a day that goes by when I don't listen to Queen or something related like solo albums.
But this song... this makes me cry. This is the song that I held on to in the worst days of my life. Everytime I hear this song it feels like he is using my words and it still hurts.
I just LOVE watching Queen/Freddie reactions; there are still so much people just now becoming real fans cause they never really listened to Queen/Freddie!
    Thank you, just thank you!
-PS: If you want to listen to the next thing; this is a demo of Freddie for a song for the Barcelona album. He hasn't got the lyrics yet, but he's playing on the paino that is now up for auction at Sotheby's.
Freddie is actually singing opera notes, and for me it's one of the most beautiful things Freddie created.

Freddie of course is singing from the heart as he always does, he’s a man dying of a disease that, at the time, was a death sentence, knowing that, ‘how can you go on, this song captures his deep, emotional feelings, his struggles, his vulnerability, his feelings of helplessness- hopelessness, his desires, hopes, dreams that now, are no longer attainable, he is at the mercy of something he can not control, he shows that he is filled with anxiety along with fear of judgement, he is looking for someone to take care of him, to comfort him, and the feelings that he needs divine intervention, It is a cry for help, guidance, he is desperately searching for meaning, in the middle of his overwhelming sadness that he is faced with regarding his existence. He is scared, lonely, sad, he is looking for and needs true love to take him thru this, which of course, I think he received at the end, with a few very loyal, supportive, real true friends, that truly cared and loved him, they stood by his side until he took his last breath ❤ (Mary, Roger, Brian,John and his personal assistant, Peter Freestone) I also think that most of the love songs he sings - are for Mary and what could have been.

Montserrat admired Freddie. Freddie loved Montserrat. Their friendship began in 1987 and they remained close friends. At Freddie's public funeral, Montserrat sang Freddie's favorite aria. Touching for Freddie was Montserrat's holding his hands during their 1988 performance (Freddie already having told her he had AIDs). That was something never done in that era to AIDs patients.

It's plainly about a lost love that seemed so perfect and now is gone. lyrically SO driven home by the music accented so well by these 2vocalists who are the tops in their fields yet they blend in driving the emotion of the song. Makes a grown man, like myself, cry.

. . .and tho' this is a solo project of Freddie, he has Queen brother, John Deacon on Bass. That is mesmerising to me...Deaky so perfectly perfect with Freddie. Tears. BTW where are your headphones???? To me, Freddie's lyrics invite us to him contemplating how he will be able to make it through to what befalls him - his passing...he now knows he has Aids, in fact has discussed with Montserrat cause she wanted him to sing Barcelona with her in 1992's Olympic opening. He, of course, made her supposedly one of the very 1st persons he confided his condition to...and didn't tell others till years later. Told her he wouldn't be around to be with us in '92..

Totally agree, he wrote as much as he could before he died , l still can't listen to those are the days of our lives without crying , the video just does it when he looks and winks at the end. We have lost the most precious person in our lifetime who had an unique ability to perform in the way he does, l still say the best concert after live aid was his last one at Knebworth Park, August 1986 , l was there . Sheer magic , there will be no long like Freddie Mercury

I love love your reaction. Yes, they became friends, after Freddie sought her out. I agree: this is getting to be my favorite of all videos of Freddie's singing. Like you, I feel both sad, and grateful that he was here, left too soon, but left us all this beauty. I also agree: this is mystical, almost a religious feeling, as if we are touched by something other-worldly.

Montserrat Caballé was from Barcelona and is, by some, considered the last of the great soprano divas in opera. She had a mastery of breath control and volume. When Freddie was asked about singing with her, his response was "I love music, and she is music". They became such friends and loved each other through their short time together. You should watch the story of their meeting. She not only attended his funeral, but also the dedication of a statue to him in Switzerland. There is also a street named for her in Barcelona.

Freddie ofcourse has a voice of his own, unique, but never forget the operatic singing from Montserrat. It was so sad ofcourse poor Freddie died so young aged 45, 1991. Also Montserrat died sadly in 2018. Such beautiful voices from the two of them, & also very different. 💖💖

The man was dying and he still managed to keep is voice strong. He was fantastic live, i had the pleasure to see Queen live at the end of the Magic Tour, his very last live performance with Queen. He would have been feeling the effects of his condition but there were no clues. He was the same performer he had always been, full of energy. He really is a legend, sadly missed, always remembered 💙

This is my favorite . The whole album is fantastic. She encouraged him to use his natural baritone instead of his usual tenor. He has a 4 octave range to work with. They did become close, it started as mutual admiration & grew. There's a great interview of them together & videos where she talks about him.

When Freddie found out he was HIV+, back then they had no treatment or anything. It was 100% fatal and he knew it. He didn't tell ANYONE, including his Queen band members. From biographies I have seen, including interviews with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, he had SO many things he wanted to do and when he got the diagnosis, he set out to achieve everything he could. Writing and singing an actual opera was one of them and this is it. He had already done a 7+ minute "opera" with Bohemian Rhapsody, from my understanding he simply started writing and recording everything he could. I COMPLETELY AGREE that with more people like Freddie who just wanted to make music, make people happy and bring joy with his music, forget record labels and whatever is "trending" now, this world would be a better place. You saw Queen perform at Live Aid, arguably the greatest performance of the ENTIRE WEEKEND was Queen. Considering your love for Freddie, I strongly suggest you watch, even if it's for yourself, No One But You/ Only The Good Die Young written by guitarist Brian May. Grab a tissue!

They shared a love and respect that transcends orientation. He saw her perform and was transfixed. The two of them, along with the magnificence of both of them, is beyond magic. The pairing of two of the most gifted performers is beyond description. They bring tears of amazement and emotion.
