  • This was quite a popular suggestion and we had a lot of people say do the studio and a lot of others say to do the live. We haven't done as many studio versions and this was a fun one, so we're glad we did this, although we are sure the live was great also!

Originally written by Roger, as partially inspired by MLK Jrs I Have a Dream Speech. But when they got in the studio, it was changed a lot (as Roger said, “that rotter Freddie got ahold of it”! Lol). The live version from the ‘86 Wembley concert is great.

Please watch the documentary on the making of this song. Freddie wanted to get everyone in the studio to write a song together. It’s not a long video but very entertaining. I don’t think there is a band worth their salt that doesn’t argue. You can’t put 4 creative geniuses together and not have arguments. The important thing is it never affected their relationships. Freddie was the one that navigated these situations. Many assume he would have been the tough one to work with but he always diffused these situations.

Roger said it was usually him and Brian going head to head and it was Freddie who was the peacemaker. You can't put four creative geniuses in the same studio and not get some friction. That's how great creation works.

They did bicker, but they were family and extremely close for the 20 years that they were together. And devastated when Freddie got sick after which they did everything possible to make it possible for Freddie to keep recording..... even after he was too sick to record videos. John .... as the quiet introvert.... was particularly close to Freddie who encouraged him always when he had doubts and anxiety. John was so devastated by Freddie's death that he quit music completely. To John, Queen was no longer Queen without Freddie.... So... even though they had their spats, just like family they trusted, loved and supported each other..... always.

Part of the tension was that the person who brought the song to the band, received the credit as writer, and the commission on resulting sales. John shared credit with Freddie on one of the songs that Freddie had helped him develop, but the that was not the norm. They only shared credit as Queen after Freddie got ill and wanted it shared. That equalized their incomes and reduced that tension that pitted them against each other financially.

As a unit, I find Queen ,in their time, to have given posterity the best of creativity, musicianship and entertainment. There's no match I've visited from then, or since, even thru to these days in 2023. 'Fighting' seems to have been a marketing ploy used then . . . and now. Each musician was a thinker, confident and able to debate a point with words and attitude. . . while giving fans unique products.

Thank you so much for this reaction! You made me blush... 😊 FYI, I'm pronounced Gillie with a soft G - like Jillie...
I love the way you caught on to the way the lads had so much fun as they finalised the production of what originated as Roger's song about Martin Luther King Jr... before Freddie got his hands on it... over an extended period. You'll probably have noticed the number of different outfits the boys appeared in.
The fried chicken ending was left in as a bit of fun, and came from when they were rehearsing, and Freddie got hungry and started improvising and ad-libbing random words, including items from all the takeaway (takeout) menus that were lying around... among other things.
As I see others have already mentioned. It's a natural progression to move on to the 20 minute 'One vision Documentary', which gives a far more detailed explanation of how they went about finalising the sound - and lyrics - of the song, and includes brief interviews with the boys.
    Thanks again!

My 4 yr old grandson loves Queen. I went to see Queen and Adam this past fall because I wanted to see Brian and Roger live. When I got back home my grandson asked me if I saw them sing We Will Rock You. He's taught his whole preschool the song. His teacher has limited him to only singing it during lunch and recess. I loved seeing all the generations at the show. A very talented band of musicians, songwriters and singers.

My favorite version of "One Vision" is live from Wembley, 1986. - th-cam.com/video/lgwfMF5kSJ0/w-d-xo.html
There is also a documentary on the making of "One Vision" -th-cam.com/video/XssPitrqOXM/w-d-xo.html.
This video was taped in Queen Recording studio in Montreux, Switzerland. It shows the band working to actually create the song. (FYI- Roger admitted that since they knew they were on camera, they were on their best behavior. So it is not an accurate depiction of what happened in the studio. On a typical day in the studio, there might be more heated "discussions" as they fight to create the best version of the song. They were 4 men with 4 different opinions,)
You might notice that they recorded a lot of lyrics that never made it into the mix. That was very common. The mixing of the recorded tracks was just as important as composing the song.
Other things you might notice in this video are:
    1. Brian's Clog shoes. According to his wife Anita, Brian loves wearing his clogs (she says he even has Blue Suede Clogs.). Apparently, Brian always wears clogs except on stage when he wears his Addidas trainers.
    2. If you look quick, you can see Brian's pick in action. He always uses an old sixpence coin as his pick. Sixpence coins are no longer used in Britain but Brian has been able to find bags of them at aniique stores so has has plenty. Originally, he used bendy picks because he thought it was good for speed but later discovered he preferred a hard, rigid pick so he could feel the strings. Apparently, the British sixpence was the perfect pick for him.
    3. The man sitting in front of the control table is Mack (Reinhold Mack), their producer/engineer. He is German. Mack and the band were very close. Freddie and John were godfathers to Mack's 3rd son, Freddie Mack. (Mack was referenced in the song "Dragon Arrack" - "gonna use my stack/it's gotta be Mack".]
    4. The other man sitting at the table was Freddie's partner, Jim Hutton.
    *************************
Also, I want to add a video to your long list to review. I know that you have already reacted to the Montreal live version of "Somebody To Love" but you really need to also watch the official studio video of "Somebody to Love". - th-cam.com/video/kijpcUv-b8M/w-d-xo.html
The arrangement they used for the studio recording showcases much more of the Queen's classic backup vocals combining Roger, Brian, and Freddie, which is an amazingly beautiful blend. The combination of their three voices together produced the unique Queen sound. It is still an amazing song whether you listen to the studio version or the group performing it live (each live performance was different from the other live performances).
They had to alter the arrangement of the song from the recorded and released version to perform it live. Freddie was an exceptional vocalist but even he could not sing both lead and backup vocals simultaneously.

The fried chicken was a nod to their work in the studio writing it, many hours together disagreeing and changes to make the lyrics fit. At one point Freddie was just throwing out random words from a Chinese takeout menu laying around. I've seen several people comment about the making of this song that's a good suggestion and the live at Wembley version shows you all the work that goes into bringing a Queen concert to life, it's a hopping crowd as it was the opening song you can actually feel the excitement of the crowd. Amazing crowd, Amazing Queen 👑

This song was used for the movie Iron Eagle and was released as a single in 1985 before being put out on the A Kind Of Magic album in 1986. Another great song from that album is Gimme The Prize (Kurgan's Theme) in which Freddie's vocals are pushed to their limit which was due to Brian wanting Freddie to hit a higher note which caused a bit of friction as Freddie said that he can only go so high. Hi folks! Back in '88, Queen put out a 3 part VHS series called "The Magic Years." Part 3 of the series was largely the recording of this song. They were famous for fretting over one note, and boy, it showed in that video. But to watch it, it's like they just came in, laid it down and had tea. You just never knew what to expect from them. And in that vein, I eagerly await you advancing to the "Jazz" album and the opener, a Hebrew banger called "Mustapha". Yep, I love that band. Love you guys!

Classic Rock guy here. Queen is my favorite band, and I enjoy watching others experience Queen. The greatness of Freddie, Roger, Brian, and John. The band is finally getting the recognition they deserve. Believe it or not, Queen did not get very good reviews back in the 70's and 80's. People did not get. Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Kiss, Rainbow ruled the rock music world. These guys had a huge sense of humor. Check out "I want to Break free" Hilarious!! Also Behind The Rhapsody or possibly Inside, both Sir Brian and Roger talk you through how Freddie came up with the concept of the song, how it was recorded etc, it almost had a different name. As at least one other person has said there is a "Making of" for One Vision (the longer one please...more short interviews in that one) It's not that long and it shows them working and writing together in the studio. Quite interesting and a lot silly fun....if you don't mind Freddie dropping an F bomb or two it's really a fun watch!
As for John singing. In an interview with Brain he said that when it shows John singing either in videos or live his mic is turned way down per his request. Also the song is about MLK and his vision.
May I vent a bit? You aren't the only ones who do this but it makes me crazy. We just watched an epic video with Brian being amazing on guitar and Roger being his usual wonderful on drums (OK we didn't see John play a lot) but your commentary was "Freddie, Freddie" Yes the extended was more Brian and Roger playing and playing very well. No hype for them after the video?

Hi Coach,, Freddie, John, Roger and Brian are so cute and funny. It's nice to see them - the Queen with Freddie and John. We missed them both. They're like family,, have arguments but at the end of the day they still love each other. They treat each other as brothers. And even Freddie is gone,, they still miss and love him. Thank you for your great reaction. You make me smile Mr & Mrs Coach as always especially when you do Queen reaction. Just love it♥️!! Hope you do Barcelona and How can I go on. Love the opera singing of Freddie♥️♥️

Otherwise know as a tanner in the UK.
      Which old sixpences are valuable?
Valuable coins to look out for.
Sixpences minted between 1920 and 1946 were struck in 50% silver. Those struck before 1920 are made of 92.5% silver, so accordingly are worth almost double. Rare coins, such as a 1893 sixpence with the Victoria jubilee head, could be worth thousands of pounds.

@@CoachCastTVFreddie and John are godfathers to Mack's son John Frederick Mack. Freddie lived in Munich, Germany in the early 80-ies and he spent a lot of time with Mack's family. When Queen recorded in Munich, it was John who often babysat Mack's children 😮 (our dear family man John who has 6 children).
Queen recorded a lot of songs with Mack as their sound engineer or producer in Musicland Studios, Munich, Germany. Mack worked with ELO, Extreme and Black Sabbath, but he is mainly known for his work with Queen (a lot of 👑 songs including One Vision).
Remember your first Queen song Dragon Attack and lyrics ... "It's gotta be Mack..."?

    HI Guys....
THANK YOU for starting my day out right with Freddie!
    P.S. There's a GREAT mini-documentary on the in-studio making of this song.
FYI, tho: There are THREE different versions of the documentary...
One is only 10 minutes long (it basically cuts out all the interesting stuff, the interviews/interactions between the guys). You would want to look for the one that's 20 some-odd minutes.
Of the 20-minute documentary, there are TWO different versions. The BEST/most interesting one, has been edited by CHIEF MOUSE (so it says Chief Mouse Edit right on the opening screen). It's just a bit more interesting than the original on the official channel, because some add'l interesting interview segments have been edited in. This Chief Mouse Edit of the documentary is posted on:
queen danka channel,.and is just over 21 minutes long.
