  • Queen's 'Breakthru" has been requested numerous times and we finally got to it. This one hit home for one of us, and the other was lukewarm on it. This is not surprising given our differences in musical tastes. And Coach reminisces about the game "Breakout" on Atari.

    I just love the part when Freddie turns to Brian singing "your smile speaks books to me" and throws a beautiful smile 😅🥰 .. At first they were all a bit unsure to perform on a train moving 50miles per hour but when they realised that they have a master steemtrain driver they became more comfortable and started really enjoying it. Brian said that at that point his life was in sh*ts (his marriage was ending, Freddie was ill and end was inevitable) but those two filming days were pure joy.

    • @iris67si
      @iris67si หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Rudi Dolezal who was their video director said that Queens manager Jim Beach tried to take out accident insurance but it was impossible because the band couldn't be strapped with safety vires 😅 so they were really relying their lives on the wisdom of a conductor who had to maintain speed (if he would suddenly cut speed they would all fly off the flat wagon they were on 😢).
      The train was moving 40-50 miles per hour. There were about seven miles of rail track, train conductors used this line to learn how to drive big, old steam-powered locomotive engines. They tracked down a black locomotive and the art director wrote The Miracle Express on 🚂.

    Queen is the group with the most records I know after the Beatles. I started listening to them when I was 16, and now I'm 60. Each album, each better with such diverse songs in which Freddie and his boys can change style and nail it. An example that I'm sure people don't know well is on the third album: Bring back that leroy brown. (a rag-time), sensational, or musical theater like seaside reandevous, or a great blues like My melancholy blues. They are examples that make it a unique group. Thank you.

    I was starting to panic as I was one of those people who suggested this could be a song that Coach would like, and first impressions were not all that until the song started to wind itself up a bit, with the Deaky bassline and Doctor May's fantastic guitar playing and his solo. This is definitely one of my top 10 Queen songs, and you have to remember that Freddie's health was starting to deteriorate, but his vocals are still great. Also, you can't forget Roger's drumming or the harmonies of this song, plus a preview of the future Mrs Taylor.
    You mentioned the video game Breakout; you should try listening to the song, The Invisible Man. I'm not sure if it is one you will like, as it is nothing like we have heard before by Queen, but the official video is loosely based around some random 80s video game. Queen in the 80s were a different band than in the 70s, but then almost all the big 70s bands changed their sound for the 1980s. I have one serious question for Mr Coach. I suppose you're from USA. Can you give your opinion why Queen aren't so massive popular in USA comparing with everywhere else in the world (Europe, Australia, Japan, Latin America and so on) ??? What happened to their popularity, which increased during the 70's and reached it's peak in 1980 with the No 1 album The Game, two No 1 singles - massive Crazy little thing called love and super massive Another one bites the dust, but after that their popularity has declined significantly and following studio albums didn't make even TOP 20 in the charts??? What happened??? I always thought that Queen music is too much diverse and too much unique and complex to understand for Americans.... One and almost the same AC/DC riff is what Americans understand and appreciate (by the way - I like AC/DC very much :)

    • @vinniedixon1140

      They lost popularity after the I Want To Break Free Video. The USA didn't get the British humour behind it

    • @Lawyeris
      @Lawyeris 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vinniedixon1140 I'm not sure about that, because their popularity was declining before that, even in 1982 - their concert tour in USA wasnt sold out, they even had to cancel some venues, Under Pressure wasn't a hit at all (while it was huge hit everywhere else), in the begining of 1984 new single Radio Ga Ga wasnt a hit in USA, nor the new album - the Works (album), although they were massive in other countries, and only after that I want to break free came in. Another argument - if MTV banned it in USA, there werent much people who saw it (remember there were times without internet and social media). As a song - it's pure classic. So, I dont believe I want to break free video is the reason.

    • @Lawyeris
      @Lawyeris 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vinniedixon1140 And another argument - Queen weren't the first group who did this - it's a well known fact - The Rolling Stones officially released 1966 music video showing band members in drag. Did they lost America??? NO! “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?” was a top 10 U.S. hit in 1966....

      I honestly don't know the answer. They were simply not popular in our social circles and we have only heard their big radio hits prior to starting this channel.
      Perhaps the variety of sound they produce is off-putting to some. If you like a certain sound, you probably want a lot of that sound. I have read but cannot confirm that radio stations didn't like to play their stuff here, except for the same few songs. Literally we had no idea their catalog was so big...and are sure there are many others who also don't know that.

      Innuendo is something above everything - pure super gem !!! Was it all worth it - it had to be their Swan song, because nobody knew how much time left to Freddie at that time, The Hitman - it's pure heavy metal, in my opinion - one of the two most heavy Queen songs (the other one - Gimme the prize (Kurgan's theme)), I think it would be too heavy even for Mr. Coach (unless he is really super tough guy)!!!

    Hi folks! Coach: "Well, this is an interesting song." No, it's not. And for proof I refer you to your "train of thought" taking you to a 40 year old video game. (Breakout. I have it on my phone. Still excellent.) When I was a kid, not liking *anything* Queen put out was heresy. And I held the line until the "Jazz" album came out. FBG-I loathe that song. It's insipid and silly and sold millions. So, I skipped past it and "Bicycle Race" and learned that even Queen aren't perfect. In later years, when Rog and the Doc suddenly approved of synthesisers (I know, leaps and bounds) I always felt it was a step down for them. By the time this came out, they were all over the shop. To me, they sound out of place next to such virtuosity of strings, and this tune in particular seemed pretty meh. Maybe I was rebelling against the schoolmaster look or just hating on the keyboards (after all, Freddie turned his nose up at a gifted electric piano-gave it to John who promptly wrote "You're My Best Friend" on it. Go figure.) this one just never rang the bell for me. They did some great stuff for "The Highlander", and even the "Flash Gordon" soundtrack wasn't bad, but this. They just sound...neutered. Thankfully, their clunkers are few and far between. Love you guys!
