She got so much hate for that friday song (like I see why I hear that every fucking Friday at my school and I HATE it) but she’s actually a really good artist and she got so screwed over by her producers.
I genuinely don't understand how and why and where the hatred came from? It was a dumb song, sure, but to HATE her for it? That's outrageous. And she was so young when it came out, and her producers basically threw her to the wolves with ZERO protection. Looking back, as a 26 year old, that's so mind-boggling to me, and people KEEP doing it to kids now. Like Lil Tay? She's like 9 years old, and people keep dogging on her. Sometimes, social media can be such bullshit, with how quickly people can just dog on undeserving people.
I think anything young girls did or young girls liked was automatically dogpiled on, same thing with Justin Bieber, super talented kid but because he was marketed for girls he was hated into oblivion. And then "not like other girls" would join to prove their status. But once underage girl celebrities hit 15+ men would start these countdowns until they will turn 18. Guys like that haven't changed, but I feel like there's a lot less "not like other girls" women out there thanks to Katy Perry etc who stood their ground during times like Rebecca's abuse.
Controversial take, but back then you either could be hot cool girl or hot dumb girl and praised for that, being anything outside that as a celebrity would get you targeted. Eg, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Kristen Stewart and everyone who starred in Twilight to name a few
I remember people framed it as, her parents are rich and “paid for her to be famous” which clearly isn’t the case, but people took that and ran with it as an excuse to treat a child like garbage.
I think it’s a thing of it’s time, I remember this “era” it was around the same time that people hated Justin Bieber and things like twilight. I remember people also made fun of hipsters a lot too, it was a counterculture or contrarian thing that got out of hand imo. It’s similar to what happened with emos back in the day. It was the “cool” thing to dislike these mainstream things that were cringe and ridicule them. That’s what I think ,and remember anyway. It also didn’t help that it was being said that her parents paid for it. It’s a strange phenomenon that I can compare to those sweet 16 bratty girls that would act ridiculous and entitled on tv, I think some people didn’t vibe with the possibility of her being wealthy and releasing that cringey song. Why? Idk 🤷♀️
I had to stop going to school sophomore year because of bullying, and I turned to content creation. I wasn’t a big influencer by any means, but when I moved across the state to a tiny rural school with a following, everyone stalked my accounts and thought they knew exactly what I would be like. The bullying started before I even got there. It was so bad, I left school as soon as the dance drill season was over. It’s been two years, and they still talk about me and make fun of me. The internet opened up a whole new way to bully people, and it’s horrific.
I'm really glad Ark came up. I've had people in my life duped by music "factories" like this. They churn out bad content and destroy lives. Never EVER pay money for a record deal.
I think friday was cringe, but hearing the true story behind it and how it wasn't meant to go viral it makes sense. And just because someone made a cringey song does not mean they deserve the hate and relentless bullying she got. People were truly vile towards her. I am so glad she didn't give up on singing though because she really has an amazing voice.
I never understood why so many people bullied her so much the song wasn’t even that bad and it was completely unwarranted even as a kid I thought it was unwarranted
i love this song! i have distinct memories of when i was in elementary school in 2012, my dad would drive me to school and i would go on youtube his phone and rewatch this music video over and over again! i NEVER got tired of it, i remember being little and thinking she was so cool and so pretty! and i still love this song.. so nostalgic for me🥹❤️❤️❤️
Her Chained To The Rhythm cover was the first song, I've put on my very first iPhone's playlist 6 years ago (had dumb phones and androids before) and it is still there, and I still love it. I was so shocked how good she actually was. So glad she was able to recover from all that nonsense and bullying. I was a grown adult when Friday came out (23 y.o.), so I was absolutely disgusted by all the bullying that little girl had for that little song with a silly catchy lyric. Thank you, Adam, for making a nice video about her!
Bullying is not okay. Offending/Hurting someone is not okay. But of course when you say that your called overly sensitive. Like nah y’all are literally traumatizing other human beings!? Why is society so desensitized to the concept of feelings. I swear these people with that mentality are like the new woke or something 💀💀
For me, those types of people are the most sensitive, literally, wishing death on a girl just because you didn't like her song? they overreact to things that are not even directed at them. She wasn't even saying a bad thing in her song
I’m not sure “woke” means what you think it means, at least not in this context and I say that with no shade directed at you. The right wing has co-opted the word to mean “anything I personally don’t like, especially when it comes to compassion for people” that it’s completely lost it’s original meaning. “Woke” or “stay woke” was originally a warning amongst Black Americans to stay aware of systemic racial injustice because it’s inherently dangerous and life threatening to us
I found her on TH-cam in like 2018 and didn’t even realize her notoriety at first. She is VERY talented. And talented or not, the way she was bullied as a CHILD was disgusting.
I'm ashamed to admit I was one of the haters. I think i was 10 when this came out. This video blew up at my school and everyone made fun of it. I never realized how much hatred was actually being spread. When she made Saturday, I was actually excited to hear it and I loved it. I feel horrid for being one of the many who made fun of her. I'm proud that she stayed strong and continued her career
She was a teenage girl who made a fun song with her friends and people used it as an excuse to socially torture a child. And as much as everyone claimed they “hated” it. It was everyone ringtone, everyone knew every word, every student sung it every Friday, and when it came on at the school dance everyone went crazy jumping and singing along.
Friday came out when I was in high school and people were def talking so much shit about her and seeing this now, I'm tearing up. Like I was annoyed by the song but why tf would people be so passionate about hating her? What's worse is that she was YOUNGER than most of the kids in school at the time, but also watching grown ass adults join in? Just gross.
I was not that active online during that time, so I never knew who she is or what "Friday" is. I saw people referencing it but didn't understand the context. This is another level of eye-opening to me, and it is commendable that she is still pursuing music after all this.
Barely even started the video, but I just wanna say that I listen to “Friday” every Friday morning on my way to work. It actually gets me ready to face the day lol. No regrets
I just saw her as a judge on a Netflix show called Is It Cake. When they said Rebecca Black I could hardly believe it was her, and they were talking about her music. The amount of hate she faced as a little kid was miserable.
Heartbreaking. So many adults set her up, let her fall, and even helped her fail. Her parents were used too, hey must have been as devastated as she was. Nothing that happened was her or her parents fault. I hope she is healing and is doing well now.
There is a beautiful podcast episode of Terrible, Thanks For Asking where she talks about being bullied at 13 years old for that song. She comes off super mature and intelligent and really cool.
Poor kid! I didn’t remember she was that young. I was thinking she was 16 or 17. So that makes it even worse. And the old man who had a stream of cusses at her in her video. How could he do that to a kid. He’s a old man he should know better than that. I’m so glad Rebecca had the support of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. At least they were looking at it. As the fact she was a child. And she did her best. I’m sure after she grew up some and had a chance to learn and improve she is still singing now. So obviously she has made a career for herself. Good luck Miss Black I hope you all the happiness and success.
@@personincognito3989 Me either! Kids are mean anyway. And you kind of expect it. But grown adults acting like she was a grown adult and insulting her like they were Simon Cowell on American Idol is sad. She was a little girl just barely a teenager and people put her through the ringer. I blame the 2 jerks who “MADE” the song for her and released it without her input. And I blame people like Daniel Tosh for making it the huge reason to bully that poor kid who was just trying to make something for her Grandma and something she could put on her college applications under extracurricular activities she had done. I can’t imagine how bad her parents felt since they paid and allowed her to make the song.
That old man seemed very mentally disturbed. I couldn't imagine living my whole life, through all the good experiences and hardships and come out of it so hateful and disgusting. Screaming at a screen cussing at a little girl?? Who's "crime" was creating a music video and singing a silly song. So hateful, did he never have kids? Or grandkids who danced and sung silly songs. I do remember the hate around the song back in the day but what was this trend of people calling her ugly? A literal child. So awful.
I remember when those production companies were coming around (I had a teenage niece at the time). They came to my town (small town in WV, less than 50,000 population). I remember they got her all excited about "auditioning", as she was an aspiring dancer at the time. She was so upset that her mom wouldn't pay the exorbitant fees for the "audition". I remember explaining to her that, with real auditions, you don't pay them money. The company bragged to have clients working for Disney and Nickelodeon. I dubbed those companies "Production Predators" at the time, and this only solidifies those feelings. I wonder how many little hearts were broken by these predatory companies with their false promises.
Yeah one of the family channels said I think 8 passengers those kids didn’t have any friends at school at all cause they already know their lives on line and they were to scared to be their friends cause they didn’t want to get involved with them. It’s so sad their lives are so messed up
sorry second comment but i love rebecca genuinely, been a fan since 'friday'. i have always thought that one of the reasons the song and its lyrics were SO hated is because to me, as an autistic person, it sounds like autistic speech. whether intentionally or not 'friday' sounds exactly like what i used to try NOT to sound like as a child to avoid being bullied myself! the song perfectly captures the awkwardness of constantly reminding yourself what day it is ('yesterday was thursday'), staying in the moment ('gotta eat cereal'), and trying to understand the feeling of 'weekend,' ('fun fun fun fun')
I was like 12 when this came out, and it was just a funny bad song to me at the time. About 5 years ago, I remembered her and did a ton of research into how she was treated. She deserves so much better than she got.
I was an internet kid back then and I fully remember the ‘Friday’ blow up & hate train. It was truly awful!! Everyone and I mean EVERYONE was hating on this girl. I’m so glad she’s persevered and risen above. She’s such a kind soul and her music is a vibe!! I love her song ‘Do You?’ 🖤
Adam, thank you so much for using your platform to bring awareness to this! I am a new subscriber and I NEVER knew about the aftermath of that era. I’m gonna stream the heck out of her music now. Her voice is BEAUTIFUL too! Thank you! ❤ Your content cracks me up and I love the serious stuff too.
Why does this feel like it circles back to the creeps who were wanting to hurt the toddlers from toddler's in tiaras. It don't matter what age you are, creepers gonna creep
This makes me think of what Courtney Stodden went through... she was bullied for being a child bride pretty much... she was slut shamed and everything for something she had zero control over as well... I hate this side of the internet
Rebecca shouldn't have to go through that over a silly song. Was the song ridiculous? Yes, but to send death threats, to call her every single name under the sun, and all of this for what, a song that a 13-year-old didn't even write?
she didnt desever the hate that she got, and knowing she is the same as me is crazy to even think about mainly thinking of how i felt with just being bullied my heart gose out to her for still being strong and doing what she loves
I was 13 too when this song came out. And I'm realising now this was such a bad time for the internet hating things teenage girls were into. Like this was the same time as Justin Bieber, One Direction, Twilight being popular and hated on.
The thing with Ethan happened like 6 years after Friday came out tho. Idk why that wasn’t talked about. Like that guy was still doing that 6 years later.
It's also worth noting that while at that time music was popular on TH-cam, it was over artists or parody music. And it was NOT easy to garner a lot of views from one video. The TH-cam algorithm wasn't as streamlined back then.
I remember this time so vividly. It's sad now to look back and realize how poorly she was treated. She never deserved that. To this day, anytime I think "it's Friday," my brain immediately starts playing her song. And honestly? That's longevity. I'm so proud of the incredible person she's become and how she's persevered. She's still talented, she's funny, she's successful, and she deserves all the flowers for that. Thanks Adam for covering this! Love your videos.
Oh my god I has just dawned on me that Rebecca Black is actually the persona that the Miranda character makes fun of to this day! Imagine. "Talentless young girl having the audacity to sing and put it on TH-cam and feel good about herself". Isn't that the entire gig with Miranda? Colleen is the personification of the Internet mob of the early 2010's.
I was 12 when Friday got released everyone was talking about it in school, had no idea about the hate since I was not allowed to go on the internet which I’m so GLAD about because being 12 I definitely wouldve jumped on the bandwagon and hate on her for no reason
i think the bright side is that friday is on her channel, 100M views and ark is nowhere to be found so she's monetized her song and i HOPE she's making bank over it and i hope she's happy and thriving cos friday is LEGIT a bop
I didn’t even get through 20 minutes of this video and immediately looked up Rebecca Blacks music and literally couldn’t move for an hour because of how amazing it was. Thank you Adam for In lightning me about her because she’s now one of my top 5 for sure. Ahhhhhhhhhh
I remember this song coming out in middle school (Im the same age as her) and I had suuch a crush on her. I used to argue w my friends abt making fun of her (very cringe) but tbh I never noticed how horrible the situation was for her. The song wasn’t great but I thought her smile was awesome and she was literally our age, I couldn’t imagine why ppl would bully her. I’m glad she’s in a better place now
God I was a teenager when all this went down and felt so bad for her. Same thing happened to Justin Bieber when Baby dropped. People used the scene where he got pretend shot up in CSI to celebrate it happpening in real life. Very few people stopped to think "Hey these are children just having fun being creative. It may not sound good but what are they actually doing wrong?" The anti-cringe witch hunt stopped me from doing many fun things as a teen.
The way the internet went after her is beyond horrible. She didn't deserve anything that came her way. She is a force to be reckoned with, so strong, so incredible. Love katy perry and what she did for her.
So as someone who grew during this shitstorm and remembers it vividly, let me explain. This was a particularly vicious time of the Internet when being an asshole was considered peak comedy. You know all the edgelord memes? That's what everyone aspired to be at that time. It was a time of cringe culture and violent shaming of anything considered strange, weird, or just not done. Rebecca Black didn't deserve any of the shit that she got and believe you me that I'm thankful that the Internet's a much kinder place than it once was. (Which should tell you just how hostile it used to be)
Thinking about when Petty Paige went on a little crusade to save the reputation of Patrice Wilson, acting like he’s some giant victim because Ethan called him names. I meaannn, Patrice got like 1/10th of the harassment that Rebecca got, and he’s a grown adult who is just getting pushback for HIS OWN ACTIONS. Just saying.
Looking back now, also being 13 I feel horrible for being one of those people that definitely mocked the song 😕 I was definitely not aware of this outlook and didn't realize just how bad it really got. Damn I feel terrible knowing all of this and wish I could take it back, I would in a second. But you grow and learn and this just shined a whole new light at me and from the bottom of my heart I am so sorry to her that I was mean and mocked her 😓 I'd also like to add that I never ever disliked her or anything about her, just that song in particular, and I never was one to comment or post anything mean, mostly just spoke about it to my friends and stuff.
Part of me wonders if they didn't realize how big the song would get and when it got as big as it did wether for good reasons or not, they weren't prepared to pay her what they owed her so they just ghosted her and her family. Which is just awful that it led to so much more issues for her, I'm glad to see now that she's come out on top and slammed the haters
I thought it was cringe but I was 17 with a baby so I didn't really have a leg to stand on. My daughter is 13 and I can't imagine my daughter being treated that way.
what’s so upsetting is that i vividly remember my fourth grade teacher pulling up this video to show the class and mock her. everyone was making jokes about her- it was really upsetting, especially as a kid who had dreams of doing something similar to Rebecca.
I'm also a fan of Rebecca Black! I was super young when "Friday" came out and I discovered her singing covers on TH-cam. At that very moment, I realized she got majorly fucked over. They lied to her.
I’m pretty sure I remember a rumor going around saying that Rebecca killed her self and this is when I was like in middle school or high school and this was way before her new music came out
What a great redemption story.. damn, I couldn't imagine being just 13 receiving all the hate she did. I'm glad she was able to show the world she is amazing.
when 'friday' came out i was a college radio dj (showing my age!!!) and i played the 5x slowed version of 'friday' on the radio. it was like an hour long and when the hosts of the next show came in they thought it was sigur rós. the slowed version remained my favourite until the dorian electra/big freedia remix came out.... The sick part about it is most of the people that were hating on her. We’re grown ass men and women.
She got so much hate for that friday song (like I see why I hear that every fucking Friday at my school and I HATE it) but she’s actually a really good artist and she got so screwed over by her producers.
no but genuinely like ok she made a song you dont like why the outrage?? the hate she got was still incredulously mal proportionate to the crime
@@orteney.Exactly! She was literally a kid and the internet just wanted to destroy her
Watch her interview on THE FOUR she says she picked the song she had 2 options
@@knockofftasty96932options? Are you saying she deliberately brought this on herself? Shut up
I genuinely don't understand how and why and where the hatred came from?
Eg, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Kristen Stewart and everyone who starred in Twilight to name a few
they will rly threaten the life of a child bc they're mildly annoyed
Why? Idk 🤷♀️
So sad to see such a young child get hurt, but damn she fought through the pain and became a QUEEN!
Will NEVER forgive people for how they treated her. It was just a corny song and they wished DEATH apon her.
Yes, support for Rebecca black
Love to see it fr. she didn’t deserve any of what she went through
i love this song! i have distinct memories of when i was in elementary school in 2012, my dad would drive me to school and i would go on youtube his phone and rewatch this music video over and over again! i NEVER got tired of it, i remember being little and thinking she was so cool and so pretty! and i still love this song.. so nostalgic for me🥹❤️❤️❤️
Her Chained To The Rhythm cover was the first song, I've put on my very first iPhone's playlist 6 years ago (had dumb phones and androids before) and it is still there, and I still love it.
Me too. I was 11 and I made fun of it too🥺
Oh my goodness !!! Thank you so much for reacting to our Rebecca black doc💜 Clicked on this not even knowing what you were reacting to😌
i love you both❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
She was a teenage girl who made a fun song with her friends and people used it as an excuse to socially torture a child.
Tosh.0 was a television show on Comedy Central. Tosh made fun of Rebecca Black for Friday and it opened up the bullying floodgates. So crazy.
Barely even started the video, but I just wanna say that I listen to “Friday” every Friday morning on my way to work. It actually gets me ready to face the day lol. No regrets
Why was I honestly wondering what she was doing RN Adam McIntyre predicts my mind telephatically!!she's also.doing new songs and she's iconic
I just saw her as a judge on a Netflix show called Is It Cake. When they said Rebecca Black I could hardly believe it was her, and they were talking about her music. The amount of hate she faced as a little kid was miserable.
Glad to be early for once.
“Oh my God which ones Ellen?” My high ass laughed out loud😂
Heartbreaking. So many adults set her up, let her fall, and even helped her fail. Her parents were used too, hey must have been as devastated as she was. Nothing that happened was her or her parents fault. I hope she is healing and is doing well now.
There is a beautiful podcast episode of Terrible, Thanks For Asking where she talks about being bullied at 13 years old for that song. She comes off super mature and intelligent and really cool.
YESSSSS IVE LITERALLY BEEN PREACHING THE REBECCA BLACK POP ICON AGENDA FOR LIKE 2 YEARS
I had no idea she was that young. I knew people kind of made fun of it but I had no idea that this all happened.
@@personincognito3989
Me either!
So awful.
omg thank you for making this cause i forgot how much i loved her youtube back then😫 gonna go binge her videos again brb
It’s so sad their lives are so messed up
Great video Adam, I missed all this!
sorry second comment but i love rebecca genuinely, been a fan since 'friday'. i have always thought that one of the reasons the song and its lyrics were SO hated is because to me, as an autistic person, it sounds like autistic speech. whether intentionally or not 'friday' sounds exactly like what i used to try NOT to sound like as a child to avoid being bullied myself! the song perfectly captures the awkwardness of constantly reminding yourself what day it is ('yesterday was thursday'), staying in the moment ('gotta eat cereal'), and trying to understand the feeling of 'weekend,' ('fun fun fun fun')
I was like 12 when this came out, and it was just a funny bad song to me at the time. About 5 years ago, I remembered her and did a ton of research into how she was treated. She deserves so much better than she got.
Thank you for that video. I haven't seen anything about the video in yeeeaars. I had no idea it escalated this much back then! Poor Rebecca wow..
Adam it’s sooo good to see you this happy and animated! I know I’m a random stranger on the internet but I’m very proud of you!! Keep smiling ❤
I was an internet kid back then and I fully remember the ‘Friday’ blow up & hate train. It was truly awful!! Everyone and I mean EVERYONE was hating on this girl.
I’m so glad she’s persevered and risen above. She’s such a kind soul and her music is a vibe!!
I love her song ‘Do You?’ 🖤
Great coverage, Adam. Keep up the good work.
Love your content and your personality 😻
I had lit just got done watching ur vid with the podcast she did with h3 n just now saw this an hour later lmAo but yesss so glad ur covering this
Rebecca shouldn't have to go through that over a silly song. Was the song ridiculous? Yes, but to send death threats, to call her every single name under the sun, and all of this for what, a song that a 13-year-old didn't even write?
Great video, Adam! 💜💙❤🧡
I unironically sang that song every Friday for a year.
I don’t understand how people could be so cruel to a child like this.
"If she has zero fans, I'm no longer alive"
she didnt desever the hate that she got, and knowing she is the same as me is crazy to even think about mainly thinking of how i felt with just being bullied my heart gose out to her for still being strong and doing what she loves
I was 13 too when this song came out. And I'm realising now this was such a bad time for the internet hating things teenage girls were into. Like this was the same time as Justin Bieber, One Direction, Twilight being popular and hated on.
hi Adam!!!!!^_^ abt to watch this video💯🔥🗣️
I literally woke up with Crumbs stuck in my head, and this is the first video in my suggested. Wtf, algorithm?
The upload speed is magnificent
The thing with Ethan happened like 6 years after Friday came out tho. Idk why that wasn’t talked about. Like that guy was still doing that 6 years later.
It's also worth noting that while at that time music was popular on TH-cam, it was over artists or parody music. And it was NOT easy to garner a lot of views from one video. The TH-cam algorithm wasn't as streamlined back then.
Rebecca Black is a true legend. To have overcome so much, yet handle herself with such grace and poise is truly incredible.
I gotta go check out her new music! ❤😃
I was in 4th grade when Friday came out. I had just gotten my own laptop with unsupervised internet access 😂
i think the bright side is that friday is on her channel, 100M views and ark is nowhere to be found so she's monetized her song and i HOPE she's making bank over it and i hope she's happy and thriving cos friday is LEGIT a bop
I didn’t even get through 20 minutes of this video and immediately looked up Rebecca Blacks music and literally couldn’t move for an hour because of how amazing it was. Thank you Adam for In lightning me about her because she’s now one of my top 5 for sure. Ahhhhhhhhhh
Her song "Girlfriend" is incredible. Seriously, go listen to it.
Edit: Posted this before I watched the video. Great taste, Adam!
I’m glad she’s in a better place now
I remember being in like 11th grade when it came out, and I remember thinking the internet was gonna make this poor girl kill herself.
I love Rebecca Black!! Her song Girlfriend is amazing. I got to see her DJ at a virtual club on zoom in 2020 or 2021, it was amazing
'Friday' was on radio one yesterday and I was so confused!
Love katy perry and what she did for her.
i was so not on this side of youtube as a kiddd lmfao it’s so weird looking at this now at 21 cause i was watching like skits and animations and gmm
i know this is a serious video and everything , but when colleen appeared on the screen and adam goes “oof jumpscare” i almost pissed my pants 😭
But you grow and learn and this just shined a whole new light at me and from the bottom of my heart I am so sorry to her that I was mean and mocked her 😓
I'd also like to add that I never ever disliked her or anything about her, just that song in particular, and I never was one to comment or post anything mean, mostly just spoke about it to my friends and stuff.
Friday Friday Got to Get Down On Friday❤ one of my go to jams cause it was hilarious but such fun.
She has such a good name for a singer. Short and rhytmical, easy to remember and say. It isn't an artist's alias, right? It's so good it could be.
I'm also a fan of Rebecca Black! I was super young when "Friday" came out and I discovered her singing covers on TH-cam. At that very moment, I realized she got majorly fucked over. They lied to her.
I’m pretty sure I remember a rumor going around saying that Rebecca killed her self and this is when I was like in middle school or high school and this was way before her new music came out
I didnt realize she is 1 year older than me!!! Thats CRAZY. I cannot even IMAGINE what she went through
i just love the sound of adams voice, it’s a very comforting tone. very cute. ☺️
I was 16 when Rebecca was 13 in 2011. The bullying she experienced was horrendous
She went soooo viral and I cannot even imagine what she went through!!
SLAY, REBECCA.
Girl is so so so strong to deal with all of that and come out okay on the other end. I have sm respect for her
So not only is Daniel Tosh responsible for Onision’s fame, but for starting the Rebecca Black hate? Shocker.
