    I am in love! I want one - with the redesigned ocean coast interior. I'm not sure we can justify having both the R1T and the R1S besides just the pleasure of driving them and marital equity. The Rivian Hub is cool too!

      @@RivianDad - Great review, Scott! I'm getting the spare tire but I haven't really seen much on it's storage area. Nice to see there is still a usable storage below the deck but above the tire storage area. And thanks so much taking those measurements! I'm familiar with most measurements but you brought a really good point regarding the antenna fin on the roof. It shouldn't be a problem as the vehicle can be put into kneel mode but I still want to double check that.
      Spoke to Rivian CS last night as they were getting back to me about some questions I had. One thing he confirmed with the Guide Team was that my Apr 2019 pre-order puts me into the 1H 2023 delivery window (which I already knew, but wanted confirmation since I changed interior from OC to BM). I did have a May/June 2022, in addition to the many before that, so it's a little disappointing I have to wait until next year. Hoping there are some R1S cancellations (especially since Explore pkg got dropped) and Rivian can start populated the R1 Store with those cancellations and I get an invite to virtually check it out if there is one I like.

    Thanks for the nice vid with measurements. This is also the first vid I’ve seen where you showed how the middle seat in the 2nd row folds down independently so you could slide long items such as skis - which is super useful while still having rear passengers in the 2nd row. The one measurement that you didn’t get though was the interior distance between the front windshield or monitor to the back with all seats folded down. Would be nice to know whether we can fit long fishing poles or surfboards (common longboard length is 9’6” or 114”) through the middle seat opening.

    Thanks Scott and Robin for the awesome walk-through! One question - when you were sitting in the third row and manually tilted the second-row seat back, you mentioned it was a shame you had to awkwardly try and reach forward to restore the prior recline position. Is it possible that if you slid the second row back toward you before tilting the backrest toward upright that might have solved the issue? That is, sliding the second row bench backward may then unlock the backrest to return to the previously-set recline level. I have been around VW and Audis for years and they often handle it this way (slide and then tilt gets you back to where you started). Just a thought. Thanks again!

    Thanks for the "one last measurement." It answered my question perfectly. It's pretty hard to fit car seats in the R1T behind my seat (I'm 6'3"), but maybe it would be easier in the R1S.

    • @RivianDad

    Hello Scott and Robin, thanks very much for the walk-through and walk-around and all the measurements! This helps a lot. I have grandchildren I will occasionally need to accommodate (plus their parents!) and this looks like a good compromise (as you say) between the need to haul a bunch of people and the need to maneuver through traffic, parking lots, etc. on a daily basis, whether alone or with others. Very helpful. One question, though: How easy is it to get in an out of for short adults? Thanks for your help.

    • @RivianDad
      @RivianDad  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd say "medium." It's easier than a lot of taller vehicles and harder than shorter ones. I do wish there was a better handle system on the dashboard or the A pillar to make it easier, but on the other hand, the truck and the seats can be lowered. As of now, there isn't a "Kneel Mode" for parking but it's a request that I will make to Rivian (to have the truck and seats lower down upon parking). It can be done, just needs to be done by software.

    • @williamelkington5430
      @williamelkington5430 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RivianDad The kneel mode was advertised prominently by RJ early on, but I don't recall hearing anything about it recently. I wonder if there is a mechanical limitation that would preclude it? In any event, I'm very much looking forward to it, if it is possible. Thanks again, for your help.

    • @chuckm260
      @chuckm260 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@williamelkington5430 - Not sure what you mean by "mechanical limitation" but it is strange Rivian has not made the kneel height option available right out of the gate. I suspect there may be some concerns of when to allow the vehicle to go in that mode, meaning, only up to certain speeds. I was told by the Rivian rep who brought an R1T to me for my First Mile Drive back in July that Kneel mode is coming soon via an OTA update. What I'm curious about, can you shift/select kneel mode while the vehicle is moving. E.g. as my vehicle approaches, say, a low clearance entrance I frequent (e.g. my garage, work parking garage, drive thru, etc), will I be able to geo tag those locations so the vehicle will automatically lower itself. (I know at least the Tesla Model X will do this.) Perhaps there's some concern or design issue on how, if at all, the vehicle would warn you if you had gear on the roof? Whatever the case, I can see kneel mode being very useful especially since Rivian does not provide any running boards to assist with vehicle entry/exit and when accessing the roof.

    • @williamelkington5430
      @williamelkington5430 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @RivianDad
      @RivianDad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the S, the glass roof is split in two sections (front/back). I can say that in the truck the roof is a really nice feature. On a hot, sunny day there is some noticeable heat emanating from the roof but not too much. Otherwise it’s fine and nice to see through. Note also that it’s really a back seat feature. You don’t notice it when you’re sitting in the front row as it is out of your field of view.

      @@RivianDad I’ll let you know when we take possession of it. If we have to choose between the R1T and the R1S, I think the R1S will win because we have 2 large Labrador type dogs and on long trips we, and so do they, prefer having a flat bigger space to lay down, accommodated better in the rear of the S with the 3rd row down. Very interesting comparison of rear seat legroom between R1S and R1T. I had suspected this was the case, but Rivian gives the same rear seat dimensions. My guess is they didn't account for the rear seat sliding back.

      @@RivianDad thanks, that makes sense. The video was good to get these details. Rivian should have provided interior dimensions already, but like the T they have been slow to do so

    I would like to see how this car will work during cold winters Ohio state. How fast it can defrost windshield, heat up interior. With regular gas engine I know exactly how to manage during snow and cold northern winds. Will see what happens in real life testing

    Deceptive 7-seats SUV
    The third row is too narrow to the children also feel uncomfortable, I don’t know they how to design it and Why not make it bigger ?

  • @GA-wq8xq
    @GA-wq8xq ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The second and third row combined are compromised. When I look at the new Blazer EV the second row space is fantastic. Rivian made the hood too long and wasted space there that could have been used for legroom.

    • @RivianDad
      @RivianDad  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do like the hood size (and frunk space) so I think the design is good, although a couple more inches in the 3rd row would be nice but they’d also have to lower the floor in the 3rd row which probably has some hardware that can’t be moved. Thx for the comment.

      I think there’s room for an extended-wheelbase R1S. The R1T has a 14 inch longer wheelbase. It would be relatively easy to do a 6-8 inch stretch in the R1S and give each of the 2nd and 3rd rows ample legroom.

    Really wish the 3rd row fold/unfold was electric, would have made it more premium given the price tag, but i can live without it.

      That would be nice… but it is really quite easy to manually flip them from the back!

      Flipping down is easy, up, not so much. Our 2010 Ford Explorer has electric folding, would be nice if it was standard on a vehicle 12 years never and twice the price.

    Too bad they didn't make this a few inches longer to allow the back seats to be useable. That is an expensive waste of seats and space since it is small-kid-only seats.

    • @RivianDad
      @RivianDad  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, they're pretty tight. But, if you slide the 2nd row up for a semi-comfortable position, the 3rd row is doable for an adult. However, I do think it's a good compromise of interior and exterior size. I don't think I'd want a bigger SUV. Still not sure of that until I have used one for a while (fingers crossed.). Thanks for watching!

    • @curtisbme
      @curtisbme ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RivianDad Agreed, don't want it too long but it is 17" shorter than the R1T you're already use to dealing with the size of. So it could add 5-7" for legroom which would make a huge difference and still be roughly a foot shorter than the R1T.

      But I only want seating for 5 anyway, they eliminated the 5 seat option for simplicity of manufacturing one interior type, hope that changes by the time my order arrives in 2023 !

    • @chuckm260
      @chuckm260 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@2Greenlid - I hear ya, the 5-seater was my original choice also. I wouldn't hold your breath on a 5-seater option, at least in the R1 line. You would more than likely have to wait for the R2 line as it's my understanding they will be smaller versions of the R1 EAVs, but who knows, stranger things have and probably will happen.

    • @RivianDad
      @RivianDad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One of the issues with the third row is the depth of the floor. Even if the truck were longer, the floor would need to be lowered for optimum comfort.
      As for the 5 seat option, I’d like to get more info about how those seats are actually bolted in. They may be able to be removed (although not easily, and not with Rivian’s blessing).

    Rivian did the old bait and switch by removing the R1s Explorer version so they could raise the price and offer the Adventure version with the low range battery. Don't be fooled yall, this company is doing fraudulent practices and should be ashamed of themselves. I cancelled my order.

    • @RivianDad
      @RivianDad  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard that the main reason for the change was to focus on the Adventure package which is the largest group of orders. I think there were very few Explorer orders. I don't see how removing an offering is fraudulent (so long as you're refunded your deposit). But of course cancelling your order is entirely up to you. Thanks for watching!
